In Korea nearly all the subjects teach environmental education in the secondary school. In addition we have a separate environmental education subject (environmental subject). This could be a very strong point in the Korean environmental education. The environmental subject and the other subjects, however, overlap in teaching materials and methods in almost all aspects. Because of this, the environmental subject has not done its job effectively, and is sometimes considered as an unnecessary surplus. To effectively play its own role in environmental education, the subject should focus on environmental issues rather than on contamination, which it is focusing on now. The contamination-focused environmental subject simply teaches nearly the same contents that the other subjects teach. In addition, it makes students visit actual sites related to pollution in order to encourage them to be aware of the severity of pollution. However, it has difficulty in teaching how environmental problems occur in a society and how the social decisions are made to resolve the problems. To overcome this difficulty the environmental subject should employ discussion classes more substantially, which let students investigate social aspects as well as scientific aspects of environmental problems and make integrated decisions through interdisciplinary approaches, to make students understand social mechanisms of environmental problems. The subject should focus on teaching what factors influence producers' and consumers' behavior and what factors they should consider when they have to make decisions on environmental issues. It should leave teaching technical knowledge and skill to the other subjects, and train students by the integrated approach which makes them see technology through a sociologist's eye. Although such integrated approach is emphasized in the environmental subject, environmental teachers should be trained to understand technological knowledge and skill in profound depth.
This research is carried out to investigate what factors affect high school students' environmental friendly activities iii Kwangyang and Suncheon. Questionnaire Survey was conducted with second-year students each three high schools in Kwangyang and Suncheon areas. Major research results were as follows; 1. High school students' environmental friendly activities were strongly affected by those behaviors of their parents. 2. High school students' environmental friendly activities were strongly affected by school environmental educations. 3. High school students' environmental friendly activities were affected by environmental factors of home, society and school. According to the above result I'd like to suggest inter-related environmental education between home and school and society, some devices which could strengthen the parents' environmental friendly activities, and systematic school environmental education should be conducted.
Environmental problems became bigger and widely known among all parts of the society in the last decade. The broad and sustainable study of the environment is the most basic and primary solution to the problems. For this reason, International Environmental Project Olympiad (INEPO) was organized in 1993. Many countries have participated in this organization. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to revitalize the environmental education and to realize the value of environmental education by making students aware of the environmental problems through the INEPO and Korean Environmental Olympiad (KEO). To achieve these goals, we conducted as follows First, we introduced aims, major contents and rules of the INEPO and grasped problems related to the applying method of students who want to participate in the INEPO in Korea. In addition, we introduced both results of domestic contest for participating in the 14th INEPO and of the 14th INEPO itself opened in 2006. Second, we analysed participants' themes according to project types such as environment-biology, environment-chemistry, environment-physics, environment-health and environment-social sciences from Previous INEPOs. Third, we had interviews with several participants to gather their thoughts on motivation and impression of participation, the reason of theme selection, and the method of environmental education in school, by visiting each booth of INEPO. Finally, we suggested sustainable methods of the KEO to revitalize environmental education, and proposed various methods to revitalize the environmental education through the KEO and INEPO in the primary and secondary schools.
This study is designed to develop a certification system for non-formal environmental education educators as part of efforts to nurture non-formal environmental education educators, increase public trust in non-formal environmental education educators and secure structure and sustainability of non-formal environmental education. The job of non-formal environmental education educators-distant from technical expertise functions that are dealt with by existing certification system - belongs to education and service industry, And the certification system I try to develop is different from existing exclusive certification system based on written tests. It is rather an authentication system based on capability development. So its components are somewhat different from those of existing certification system. However, I also tried to ensure that the system should include components which were supposed to be part of basic certification system. The certification system for non-formal environmental education educators in the study is focused on developing a framework for basic certification system. Therefore, I believe that follow up studies may be needed to address execution, i.e., specific evaluation criteria to select organizations in charge of certification system and education course/program respectively, criteria to select instructors who will lead training course/program and decision on whether experiences as eco-guide or nature experience guide should be recognized as experiences for non-formal environmental education educator etc.
A 'Resource recycling society' is the common goal to reduce environmental impact from human activities and to conserve natural resources. The Resource-Recycling Waste Management is necessary to explicitly show objectives, and to evaluate the achievement level gained by school administration. In this paper, focusing on resource-recycling school waste management, three indicators are designed to evaluate the present conditions of school waste management, which include evaluation of school policy, waste management and education for waste management by school administration. Each indicator is made up of three or four questions that are supposed to be answered by school managers, teachers and students. Questionnaire surveys, which is based on the resource-recycling school waste management indicators, were carried out in elementary school, middle school and high school in the National Capital region. The resulting of indicators well describe the situation of school waste management among these schools. Influential strategies towards resource-recycling school waste management have been found in analysis.
School is an excellent place for children to loam environment-conscious behavior and for teachers to bring up environmental education. School has a plenty of teaching materials such as school building, pond, school forest, waste and school supplies. Especially, the environmental education for and with school supplies can be very effective, as it is mostly the first products for children to learn the buying and consumption in their daily life. In this study we conducted a survey on the environmental attitude of two groups of 5th graders towards environmentally friendly school supplies. The experimental group received environmental education on school supplies and the control group did not. The survey results showed that almost 50% of the children did not consider the environmental impact, but rather the price, design and function when buying the school supplies. However, more than 70% of children were willing to use the recycled school products, implying that they are aware of environmental Issues and want to contribute to the preservation and improvement of the environment. The children recognized paper/notebooks and paints/crayons as the major environmental problems. Writing appliances such as pens, pencils, highlighters and markers were also considered as environmental concerns, since most of them are made of plastics and they are not easily biodegradable nor refillable. We also exemplify a lesson-plan for environmental education program on school supplies and make suggestions to encourage the use of those eco-friendly school materials.
Inquiry has great value in environmental education(EE). Being able to see the world environmentally through 'inquiry-based environmental education' can be an important value and goal of EE. In this study, we intended to develop an EE program of measuring activity of dissolved oxygen(DO), based on the theory of 'inquiry-based EE'. Especially, we recognized the potential that DO meter can be used in 'inquiry-based EE', and we tried to develop a model of inquiry-based EE using DO meter. As a result of this research, we present specific models of inquiry-based EE about how to perform measuring activity of DO and how to use the DO meter in laboratories and streams from the perspective of inquiry of water environment. In the process of program development, we considered organization of the inquiry process, use of concept and knowledge, scientific inquiry and insightful inquiry, integration, sustain-ability, content components of 'Environmental Studies for EE', developmental level and in-forest of students. The developed EE model is a scientific inquiry model, pursuing 'explanation' based on data collection. Through this model, we tried to make students see water environment more deeply. The developed program can be applied to various water environments, like laboratories, streams, ponds, etc. It can be more effective inquiry activity if we perform measuring activities simultaneously with PH, electrical conductivity, and turbidity meters.

This study designed for a teaching and teaming method and strategies using PBL based upon the theories and practices. This study will also develop an e-learning. As a result, it is indicated that the teaching and learning method using PBL has the positive effects on learning that the development of self-directed learning and collaboration teaming Is observed by reflect journal and presentation of students. e-PBL is a teaming model for learning-centered that adapted many school and subject. Therefore e-PBL makes full use of be 'Ecology & environment' class and environmental education.
This research compared the mechanism of the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere with retaining warmth in the actual greenhouse, analyzed the styles of explaining the greenhouse effect in current textbooks, and investigated teachers' and students' degrees of understanding the effect. The mechanisms of the actual greenhouse and the greenhouse effect are not the same. Nevertheless, in all the current textbooks, the radiation phenomenon by the atmosphere is described as the 'greenhouse effect'. Using the words of the 'greenhouse effect' to refer to the effect of air being kept warm by the heat absorbing gases, causes confusion of concepts. To make learners understand the greenhouse effect exactly, concrete principles such as radiating electromagnetic phenomenon should be explained. However, teachers and current textbooks explained the radiating electromagnetic phenomenon as actual greenhouse. Therefore, it is difficult for learners to understand the greenhouse effect, scientifically. Because of this, learners maybe confused about greenhouse effect concepts.
The purpose of this study was to examine how environmental education teachers think about environmental teaching materials of their use in primary and secondary schools. For this purpose, six primary and secondary school teachers were selected for focus group discussion on October 17th, 2005. The discussion of focus group was recorded both on video and audio tapes. Teachers' discussion could be analyzed in the perspectives of two big ideas, 'content selection' and 'content organization and presentation'. The big ideas were categorized into several areas: 1) The idea of 'content selection' was classified into 4 areas such as integration, difficulty level, locality, and timeliness, 2) The idea of 'content organization and presentation' was classified into 4 areas such as learning motivation, teaching and teaming strategy, evaluation method, application of teaching materials. This study provided meaningful ideas, which can be used in developing environmental education materials as well as effective teaching and teaming strategies for school environmental educators.
The purpose of this study is to closely examine the changes of food and drink waste amounts, and student's environmental literacy. By using creative methods, discretional activity classes, and programs to dispose of food and drink waste from students schoolmeals, and at the same time conduct and teach environmental education classes. To achieve this, students were given ten class lessons in creative discretional activities. Students were given flowerpots containing earthworms and were instructed to raise them, using food and drink waste from school meals. Four classes who were participating in project were examined for changes from March to July 2005. As a result the environmental education classes through creative discretional activities didn't have any significant influence on the students environmental literacy. However it did make a difference to the student's in-terms of their ecological knowledge. The project using earthworms to dispose of food and waste drink showed a decrease of 15% of the amount of waste food and drink from school meals. Moreover student's environmental literacy had been significantly influenced about environmental sensibility, value and causes. Through this study I found that the project using earthworms to dispose of waste food and drink, and creative discretional activities as a lesson decreased the amount of food and drink waste at the school, and the changes to students concerns and understanding about environmental sensibility, value and the various causes of waste food and drink.
A benefit-oriented socio-economic system causes environmental problems that become obvious and more serious on the earth. Therefore, every country in the world is making various efforts to solve serious environmental issues for making the sustainable society. And it is thought that environmental education should play a key role to make the efforts fruitful. Especially, enterprises should be given an important role on environmental education in the future society. This study inquires present activities done by enterprises on environmental education analyze their achievement and aims to clarify the role and prospects on environmental education in the future that the enterprise should carry out. The major results of this research are as follows; First, The approach form of the enterprise concerning environmental education can be classified into four stages, namely 'beginning stage', 'evolution stage', 'development stage' and 'partnership stage'. Present activities on environmental education have not been reached there though 'partnership stage' will be necessary for the sustainable society. Second, In the execution of environmental education, it independently works on environmental education in the enterprise that strongly recognizes the importance of environmental communication with citizens. In other words, it can be said a leading enterprise concerning environmental education, Third, Recognition of the enterprise concerning the importance of environmental education again and the establishment of the positive posture are important.
