A Study on Records Filing Systems
Yoo, Jae-Ok ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 16, issue 2, 2005, Pages 5~24
This study reviews various kinds of records filing systems, which function as a basic fundamental to effective records management. The purposes, methods and characteristics of Alphabetic, geographic, numeric, subject, and combined filing systems are examined. The alphabetic filing method uses letters of the alphabet to determine the order of names of people and companies. In subject filing the subjects are filed in alphabetic order. In numeric filing, numbers representing names or subjects are used. When records are requested by place or location rather than by individual or business name, geographic filing is advantageous.

Based on the analysis. it suggested to develop the communication channels between libraries and archives; to further the education of competent professionals; to establish necessary standards. to get legal and financial support from the central and local authorities.
Management of Electronic Records to Ensure the Authenticity
Song, Byoung-Ho ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 16, issue 2, 2005, Pages 43~59
Traditional paper records have to be preserved in the original form to ensure the authenticity. On the other hand. electronic records have to be continuously changed in content itself or metadata to be preserved in long-term period, so the proof of the legality of each change made so far and the proof of the protection against all the illegal changes are the essential. to ensure these requirements. We need some functions including the authentication of original captured records. the protection of records against the loss or forgery, the authentication of preserved records, and the treatment of authentication-failed records. This paper explains the fragility of authenticity for electronic records, identifies the functions needed, suggests the implementation idea, and describes the overall management polity for electronic records to ensure the authenticity.
Establishing and Exchanging Contextual Information Based on the Authority Control of Creators of Archives
Kim, Sung-Hee ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 16, issue 2, 2005, Pages 61~82
It is essential to describe information on a person, family or corporate body that is responsible for creation of archives in providing archival contextual information. This paper discusses the establishment of contextual information based on the authority control of creators of archives by using international standards such as ISAAR (CPF) : International Standard Archival Authority Record for Corporate Bodies, Persons, and Families, Second edition and EAC(Encoded Archival Context). It introduces the LEAF(Linking and Exploring Authority Files) Project in Europe, which presents the model for exchanging and sharing of authority data between libraries, archives and museums by employing EAC. The concluding remarks stress limitations associated with establishing and exchanging of authority files and requirements for the establishment of archival contextual information nationally.
How the Disabled Suffer from Information Alienation: An Ethnogrsphy
Chang, Duk-Hyun ; Lim, Shin-Young ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 16, issue 2, 2005, Pages 89~108
The signs of the information society are everywhere, as they became the essentials in ordinary citizen's everyday life. This change requires the modern man to have proper information literacy in order to maintain their lives, and the digital divide between the established and the marginalized in the society is being widened. The gap between the two classes is the single most significant factor in reproducing the socially marginalized such as the urban poor, the disabled, the aged and migrate foreign laborers, core information poor. This study attempts to scrutinize the social problem of information barriers as viewed through the everyday lives of five disabled people. Through various ethnographic positioning and research methods, information needs and information related behaviors, along with general recognitions and reality control strategies are investigated.

Hong, Jae-Hyun ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 16, issue 2, 2005, Pages 109~138
The concept of ubiquitous is being applied already in Korean public libraries, and ubiquitous technologies are becoming intensively in RFID system and mobile service. This research is a survey study to analyze RFID system and mobile service in Korean public libraries which sees ubiquitous age. The RFID system investigation executed manager group of 15 public libraries where the RFID system is constructed and the 259 person user groups which are the experience which uses the RFID system. It analyzed the construction and management, the percieved system benefits, the use satisfaction, and the technical and ethical problems of the RFID system. And mobile service investigation executed 20 public libraries which provide a mobile service. It analyzed the current condition of construction and the problems on management of the mobile service. At the analysis result, the study suggested the concrete plan to activate the RFID system and mobile service in Korean public libraries.
A Study on the Advanced Electronic Book System Based in Web
Nam, Young-Joon ; Jeong, Eui-Seob ; Yoo, Jae-Young ; Cho, Hyun-Yang ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 16, issue 2, 2005, Pages 139~156
In this paper, we design and implement electronic book system providing web-based interface for the ebook. The aim of this study is to optimize the effective reading and management of electronic text for its users(readers and librarians). Advanced functions of the electronic book system are the following: 1) Electronic book system is not dependent to specific software and tool. 2) Electronic book system is able to. minimize images(table, image, icon etc) to improve the meaning and readability of information. 3) Electronic book system is able to reduce the effort for indexing extraction and constructing the table of content. 4) The system is able to collect the user log files that are created during the process of reading ebook from various points of view. 5) When reading, the system uses the DRM through decoding and encoding the ebook.
The Analysis of Visual Descriptors for Content-based Video Retrieval
Kim, Seong-Hee ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 16, issue 2, 2005, Pages 157~175
The main purpose of this paper is to explain and analyze visual descriptors of MPEG-7 for representing multimedia content. This study describes MPEG-7 visual descriptors that are made of color, shape, texture, and motion using some examples and application areas in detail. As a result, those visual descriptors can represent the rich and deep features in multimedia contents domain. Also, the use of those descriptors will increase the retrieval effectiveness as well as the interoperability among systems through the consistency of the content representation.
Some Trends and Issues of Qualitative Research Method in Library and Information Science
Lee, Myeong-Hee ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 16, issue 2, 2005, Pages 177~201
The purpose of this research is to study the meanings and characteristics of qualitative research method in LIS. As the philosophy and epistemology of qualitative research are widely different from those of quantitative research, the meaning of validity and reliability must be interpreted in its ow9 structure and dimension. Essentially qualitative researchers seek to understand and interpret the world of others from their own viewpoints which basically tend to be subjective. Accordingly, qualitative researchers‘ understandings and interpretations are met with readers' subjectivity. By carefully analyzing the nature of qualitative research in LIS, I tried to point out some problems in terms of validity and reliability and practical strategies. Six problems issued in the qualitative research method are presented.
