The Problems and countermasure about entry of headings in Japanese book cataloging
Kim, Chi-Woo ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 4, issue 1, 1980, Pages 1~22
It was analysed and considered about entry methods of headings in Japanese book cataloging which using methods of major universities and public libraries in our nation at present. I was suggested and clarified one's position that authors heading must make an entry to our pronunciation after translating from sound of chines letters, title headings must make an entry translation from Japanese title or Chinese title, to Korean. On the cataloging of authors heading or title heading, if cataloging make an entry to Japanese pronunciation it have many faults as follow. (1) In the title and authors heading of Japanese books, if it make an entry as Kana letter, not only non skilled librarian at Japanese language will have many faults but also non skilled users to Japanese language or pronunciation will very difficult to reference in title and authors catalog card. (2) If it Romanize the catalog card of title and authors heading in the Japanese books, librarian of the catalog part will make efforts and take pains to the catalog work. In addition, catalog users which is skilled in Japanese language but can not understand or unknown to the Romanized entry, and which if not understand to the, methods of entry will very difficult to card investigation or can not refer to catalog card. (3) If it make an entry to Korean in the authors and title heading from Japanese sound or pronunciation, librairans and library users which is unskilful as Japanese language will be inconvenience to works and investigation of library materials.
A Study on Information Networks for Libraries
Kwon, Kie-Won ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 4, issue 1, 1980, Pages 23~48
Libraries are social apparatuses made by social needs and functions, each class of services and technology in them were changed and developed variously adapting to chronological conditions. There is reaching the interest about development in the information system to deal with it's all materials effectively, but most of libraries are interfacing from the limit of materials and manpower. Some obstacle factors restrained in the attainment of purposes and is made Sufficiently services by librarians through the information networks for libraries, they devise the utilization of materials widely in libraries and information centers. As the pre-condition of library networks, the mathematical model of organization and it's formular, 29 universities and 7 public libraries in seoul are to make the non-directed and the directed networks, and then the former has 5 groups, the latter has 1 group by the switching center. I studied for the switching centers from 6 groups experimentally. Organization, finances, cataloging and Situation that are some obstacle factors of the information networks for libraries were studied the alternatives of them. When we can have supports of the nation actively for the making networks in geographical and various libraries and get grants of it, many agencies and industries, we can achieve the purpose by social apparatuses in the information society.
A Study on Work Measurement for Libraries
Park, In-Ung ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 4, issue 1, 1980, Pages 49~83
Rapid expansion has taken place in development of cooperative arrangements among libraries, in computerization, mechanization, and centralization of library services; in sizes of collections; and in the variety of services offered by libraries. These increasing complexities of library organizational arrangements and expansions in activities and services make it all the more important for libraries to define their objectives clearly and to have methods for measuring the level of attainment of these objectives. Libraries, as all other institutions and organizations, are faced with the economic problem of allocating their limited resources in such a manner as to generate maximum benefits and calculating the costs of a library. Furthermore, they should be able to measure their performance or degree of achievement of objectives. In order to it, it is essential to set a standard and review the time and motion study. This study is an attempt to build a general standard applicable to Korean university libraries to provide a persuasive basis to university library administrators in their work management: The usefulness of this study are given below. (1) It helps to balance available resources with estimated workload. (2) It helps in managing a library more efficiency and more economically (3) It helps in objective evaluation of individual employee performance and in evaluation of the organization as a whole. (4) It helps the librarian plan for financial and personnel needs on the basis of sound production figures.
System Analysis for the Automated Circulation
Kim, Kwang-Yeong ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 4, issue 1, 1980, Pages 85~102
Accepting the necessity for maintaining the objectives of the existing circulation system, the computer-based system could be designed by the system analyst and librarians to gain a variety of improvements in the maintenance, accessibility of circulation records and more meaningful statistical records. If the terminal can be operated on-line, then this circulation data is transmitted directly to the computer, where it may update to the circulation file immediately or alternatively be kept in direct access file for updating in batch mode. on-line system in the circulation operations is "data-collection system" and "Bar-coded label system" Bar-coded label system is simple, quick, and error-free input of data. Attached to CRT terminal is a "light pen" which is hand held and will read a bar-coded label as the pen is passed over the labels (one affixed to the book itself, other carried on the borrower cards). Instantaneously the data concerning transaction is stored in the central mini-computer. It is useful, economical for us to co-operate many libraries in Korea and design borrower's ID code, book no., classification code in the Bar-coded label system by the members of the computer center and the library staff at every stage. As for book loan, the borrowers ID code, book number and classification code are scanned by the bar-code scanner or light pen and the computer decides whether to loan and store the data. The visual display unit shows the present status of a borrowers borrowing and decides whether borrower can borrow.
A Study on Efficient Administration of Library Collections with Emphasis on Establishment of Weeding Criteria
Lee, Un-Chul ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 4, issue 1, 1980, Pages 103~127
Due to the rapid growth of publications, librarians have been facing the problems caused by the shortage of stack as well as the quality deterioration of library collections. This naturally disappointed the user communities and the present library activities are weak and inadequate. It seems to the author that one of the desirable actions in remedying this problems is to weed library collections properly and regulraly. The purpose of this study is to establish weeding criteria in library collections, particulary in the fields of polictical science, economics and law In order to establish weeding criteria, shelf-time period which is the length of time that a book remains on the shelf between the last two users of a volume, was measured by examining the book cards or date-due slips of circulating books and collections which remained in the stack. The results of this study are as follows: (1) In the fields of political science economics and law, the shelf-time periods of general materials in Korean for circulation was measured. (2) This study shows shelf-time periods that vary in different subject fields. (3) Combining the shelf-time periods of books in active circulation and the total collection including books which have never been circulated, the size of library holdings which may satisfy a certain percentage of the current circulation can be estimated.
To Promote Efficiency of a Information Circulation method
Lee, Jin-Young ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 4, issue 1, 1980, Pages 129~142
The present paper discusses some problem areas in supplying information. As the world advances in civilization, we need exact and rapid information exchange, it may be said in this connection that we also feel keenly the necessity of the industrialization of the information. In accordance with the industrialization of the information, we can find the following phenomena: 1. Increase of present potentiality users. 2. Demand of high level information in accordance with the improvement of education level, 3. Increase of demand in the information materials in accordance with growth of research and development. 4. Contraction of the existing knowhow and degeneration of special field technique, 5. Increase of information concerned person for policy making in the government and in the industry. In the meantime, the information problem occurs for efficient management of information materials, in addition to numerical increase of various kinds, increase of users crate control and standardization problem, so it is needed to improve a mode of expression, structure, file and methods of usage. The librarian, as a information processor, should recognize that the information is national resources and improve the marketability of information industry. We need an administrative system of national level for the development of library in accordance with increase of an administrator who is engaged in information activities.
About the Problems of Nonuse in School Libraries
Han, Yoon-Ok ;
Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science, volume 4, issue 1, 1980, Pages 143~169
The most good library's service will be accomplished for the system of user centralized and we can't expect the development of school library without student's use. This research has been designed for an attempt to know why students don't use the school library. The methods employed to achieve the purpose of this study are (1) To establish some tentative factors affecting the school library's use or nonuse (2) to get necessary data, a questionnaire was made according to the tentative factors. A questionnaire was sent to teacher and students in the 4 sample high schools in Seoul. The followings are the am lysed results. (1) School library's collection are poor. (2) The school library's equipment and position are bad. (3) The guide or use instruction of school library are not carried out. (4) Teacher librarian can not reach the demand of the society and the atmosphere of library are not good. (5) The books are not lent to students and the circulation procedure are complicated. (6) Our country's educational programme does not organize to promote using the school library. (7) Teachers' knowledge for using the library are poor. (8) Entrance examination of the university disturbed to use the school library. (9) The school administration are not enough to understand about the school library.
