Journal of Korean Public Health Nursing, volume 14, issue 1, 2000, Pages 1~11
The purpose of this study was to examine self-esteem and toothbrushing behavior in college students. The research was conducted from August 26 to September 16. 1999. Totally 1003 students consisted of whom 875 in college and 128 in university were surveyed. Questionnaires including period. frequency. method. and time of toothbrushing and self-esteem were obtained. The data were analysed by descriptive statistics. t-test, Pearson Correlation Coefficient and ANOVA. A significant level of statistical difference was 5 percent. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The average score of self-esteem was
. 2. The average score of toothbrushing behavior
. 3. 54.8 percent of the students who were surveyed reported that they brushed their teeth after breakfast and after dinner. 42.9 percent did so twice a day. and 50.2 percent did Rolling method. 4. The Pearson Correlation Coefficient between the self esteem and toothbrushing behavior showed a positive correlation(p=.005), 3. The level of self-esteem was significantly varied with toothbrushing period (p=.000), toothbrushing frequency (p=.020)' and toothbrushing time (p=.003). From the above findings. we found out self-esteem might play a significant role in mediating changes in oral health behavior.

Journal of Korean Public Health Nursing, volume 14, issue 1, 2000, Pages 12~25
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of aerobic rhythmical exercise program on
max, leg strength, grip strength, flexibility, exercise self-efficacy and quality of life in elderly. This quai-experimental study was designed as a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest study. 36 subjects, aged between 65 and 73 years who have normal cognition. sensory function and cerebellum function participated in this study. 19 experimental group subjects participated aerobic rhythmical exercise program. Aerobic rhythmical exercise program was developed on the basis of calisthenics, stretching, aerobic exercise, Korean traditional dance and music by the author. The program consisted of approximately 1 hours of exercise, 3 times a week for 9 weeks. During 1 hours workout, there were 15 minutes of warm-up dancing, 35 minutes of conditioning dance and 10 minutes of cool-down dancing. The intensity for the conditioning phase was between
of age adiusted maximum heart rates. The
max, grip strength, leg strength, flexibility, exercise self-efficacy and quality of life were measured prior to and following the experimental treatment. Data were analyzed with
, t-test, mean, standard deviation. percentage of change and ANCOVA test using SAS program. Results were obtained as follows. 1. The
max of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group following the aerobic rhythmical exercise program(F=7.76, p=0.008). 2. The grip strength of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group following the aerobic rhythmical exercise program(F=4.61, p=0.039). 3. The leg strength of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group following the aerobic rhythmical exercise program(F=9.29, p=0.000). 4. The was no significantly difference of flexibility between experimental and control group 5. The self-efficacy of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group following the aerobic rhythmical exercise program(F=43.40, p=0.000). 6. The quality of life of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group following the aerobic rhythmical exercise program(F=8.91. p=0.005). The results suggest that aerobic rhythmical exercise program can improve
max, grip strength. leg strength. exercise self-efficacy and quality of life elderly. Thus. aerobic rhythmical exercise program was a useful nursing intervention for elderly.

Journal of Korean Public Health Nursing, volume 14, issue 1, 2000, Pages 26~40
This study was conducted to find out residential environment, mood states, ADL(Activity Daily Living) and nursing need of the elderly who live alone. The questionnaire survey was conducted on 154 single household elderly over 65years who live n D-city, Kangwon Province. The data were collected between September 1. 1999 and October 17, 1999 and analyzed by means of SPSS package. The results were as follows; 1. The percentage of the subjects who owned their house was no were than
., which showed that they still belonged to the economically vulnerable class. As for their residential environment, the average indoor temperature and humidity level were
respectively during the daytime between September and October, which proved to range within the standard scope. The average indoor illumination level was, however, 43.61 Lux, which showed that their illumination environment was very poor. 2. The average score of their mood states was 3.31. which turned out to be rather low. 3. The mean score of ADL was 1.69, which showed that they didn't have any serious inconveniences in their ordinary lives. 4. The mean score of their nursing need was 275, which proved to be close to the normal level. 5. The higher the room humidity was, the higher their nursing need increased. The higher the degree of illumination level was, the lower the degree of their nursing need was and the higher the level of ADL was. 6. The major factors influencing their moon status were the frequency of their contact with children and room humidity. These two factors could account for
of the total mood status. These results suggest that the residential environment should be necessarily considered in the psychological nursing intervention for the elderly who live alone and they should be urgently supported in terms of health policy so that they can maintain the optimum level of illumination during the daytime.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of supportive nursing intervention on patient's response of anxiety in emergency room as the suspected experimental research sequentially designed for the unequal control group. This study collected the data from 100 patients including 50 patients of experimental group and 50 patients of control group in emergency room of the only one university hospital from July 12. to September 30, 1999. This study used questionnaires that Kim, Jung Taek and Shin. Dong Kyun revised the measurement of STAI(State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) of Spielberger(1972) to measure their anxiety with using physical. spiritual. and informative support of the supportive nursing intervention, and measured blood pressure. pulse and respiration by physiological response of anxiety. After then. this study analyzed the frequency and percentage by using SPSS 7.5 program,
, t-test and ANCOVA. The results are as follows: First hypothesis : the point of STAI of experimental group who received the supportive nursing intervention during emergency room staying will be lower than that of control group without the supportive nursing intervention(F=22.943, p=.000). Second hypothesis : the sistolic blood pressure of experimental group who received the supportive nursing intervention during emergency room staying will be lower than that of control group without the supportive nursing intervention(F=42.603. p=.000). Third hypothesis. the diastolic blood pressure of experimental group who received the supportive nursing intervention during emergency room staying will be lower than that of control group without the supportive nursing intervention(F= 18.482, p=.000). Fourth hypothesis: the pulse of experimental group who received the supportive nursing intervention during emergency room staying will be lower than that of control group without the supportive nursing intervention. Fifth hypothesis : The respiration of experimental group who received the supportive nursing intervention during emergency room staying will be lower than that of control group without the supportive nursing intervention. In the above-mentioned result. the supportive nursing intervention was considered to be useful intervention that raised the effect on patient's response of anxiety during emergency room staying.

Journal of Korean Public Health Nursing, volume 14, issue 1, 2000, Pages 122~130
This study was designed to investigate the effects of an aquatic exercise program on the physical function and depression among the community elderly. The subjects were 41 cases of aged over 65 who went to elderly college in Hawsung-Kun, Kyeongkee province. Seventeen of them were assigned to control group, while twenty four subjects to the experimental group. The period of data collection was from June., 1999 to November., 1999. The aquatic exercise program was developed by the author with the assistance of rehabilitation medicine doctor and physical therapist in the public health center. The program was carried out once a week for 6 months in regular swimming pool. Data were analyzed with t-test,
test, ANCOVA. paired t-test using SAS 6.12. Results were obtained as follows: 1. The increments in the range of motion of the shoulder and knee joints in experimental group after exercise was significantly greater than those in the control group. 2. The physical pain score decreases significantly after the exercise in the experimental group only. 3. The experimental group revealed lower level of depression after exercise than the level before the exercise, whereas control group showed no significant changes in this level. These findings may indicate that the aquatic exercise program is effective in increasing the range of motion of shoulder and knee joints and also effective in decreasing pain, the level of depression. Accordingly. the aquatic exercise program can be adopted as an health promotion program for community elderly.
Relationship between the Patients' Activities Daily Living and Family Burden, Social Support under
Ju Sung Ja ;
Journal of Korean Public Health Nursing, volume 14, issue 1, 2000, Pages 131~146
The purpose of this study is to clarify the correlation between the degree of patients daily activities and that of a sense and social support of families. This study covers families of 252 patients under home health nursing care at 6 University Hospitals during the period of March to May. 1999. The data were collected by using three different questionnaires. Data were analysed by utilizing SAS program such as frequency. average. percentage. t-test. ANOVA. Scheffe test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results were as follows: 1. The average score of patients' daily living activity was
patients turned out to be. in part. dependent on their family's care.
of the patients were still dependent on their families in walking:
In bathing: and
in using toilet. 2. The average score burdened family caregivers had felt was 2.25 in 4 full point which can be interpreted as average. Among the six burden dimensions. time was said to be the No. 1 burden-yielding factor. When it comes to the characteristics of patients. there were tendencies for patients with lower incomes residing in communal housing. with cerebrovasculal diseases and with higher score of daily living activity to show a higher burden scores. 3. The average score of social support was 2.49 in 5 point. which represents a average score. Among other items. the opportunity of social integration was 2.66. topping the list whereas a chance of upbringing was starkly low at 2.42. The higher scores of social support were shown in cases where the caregiver was male spouse. total care giving duration exceeded 25 months and malignant patients daily living activity scores were low. 4. The score of patients daily activity was positively correlated to the degree of the family burden (r=0.1942). Data indicates there was direct correlation between daily living activity and burden of time consuming, self-improving and physical impairment. 5. The score of the patients daily living was negatively correlated to the social support (r=0.3414), As a whole. there was negative correlation between social support and the formation of intimacy and self-confidence.

Choi Hyun-Ju ;
Journal of Korean Public Health Nursing, volume 14, issue 1, 2000, Pages 147~160
This study was carried out to investigate awareness and attitude of monitors in 206 small sized industries in Seoul and Kyeonggi area toward the occupational health programs using a specially prepared questionnaire. The industries had been running Government-Funded Subsidiary Program since 1998. The questionnaire was designed to be self-administered by respondents. Data were collected for two months from November to December, 1998. Major results are as follows: 1. Between two groups of industries, there were no significant differences in classification, scale, methods of production, existence of trade union, but in type of working pattern and facility ownership there were significant differences. 2. Between two groups of monitors, there were no significant differences in gender, age, marital status, rank, years of education, but in duration of working there was a significant difference. 3. In awareness and attitude of monitors toward their activities and occupational health programs, there was no significant difference by groups of industries, but a significant difference by type and scale of industry, gender, age, years of education 4. It was found that newly subsidized industries were more necessary to provide education programs on occupational health than old industries, and there was a significant difference between two groups of industries in the contents of education needed. In conclusion, it is desirable that the government should develop specific training programs for monitors on occupational health to provide them practical knowledge and specific skills which monitors can apply to their specific situation, and implement the training programs and continue Government-Funded Subsidiary Program for years until small scale industries would have been able to develop and keep their own health management system spontaneously.

Journal of Korean Public Health Nursing, volume 14, issue 1, 2000, Pages 161~171
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing health promoting behavior and quality of life in the nursing students, to provide the basic data for health promoting intervention in order to improve quality of life. The subjects of this study were 199 nursing students, living in M city, during the period from May 18 to 25, 1999. The instruments for this study were the health promoting behavior scale developed by Walker et al.(1987), the quality of life scale by Ro(1988), the self efficacy scale by Sherer(1982), the health locus of control scale by Wallston et al. (1978) and the self esteem scale by Rogenberg(1965). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, stepwise multiple regression, t-test, ANOVA. The results of this study are as follows; 1. The health promoting behavior showed significant positive correlation with self efficacy, self esteem, internal health locus of control and quality of life. 2. The quality of life showed significant positive correlation with self efficacy, self esteem, internal health locus of control. 3. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of health promoting behavior was self efficacy. A combination of self efficacy, self esteem, health locus of control and quality of life accounted for
of the variance in health promoting behavior. 4. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of quality of life was self esteem. A combination of self esteem, self efficacy and health promoting behavior accounted for
of the variance in quality of life. Based on the above findings, it is suggested to develop nursing intervention to improve Self Efficacy, Self Esteem of nursing students enhance health promoting lifestyle.

Journal of Korean Public Health Nursing, volume 14, issue 1, 2000, Pages 172~181
This study was designed to evaluate the degree of the anxiety and discomfort experienced by first-time donors in platelet donation. The subject of this study was 309 first-time platelet donors visiting apheresis unit of St. Mary hospital in Seoul. The data was collected from Questionnaire during period of 28 April to 10 September 1999. The statistical methods used were t-test. ANOVA and stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows. 1. The most common group were 21-30 years of age and soldier of job. 2. The mean scores of the platelet donor's anxiety was
. 3. The mean scores of platelet donor's discomfort was
. 4. The variables influencing anxiety were the physical condition. the level of education and donation experience. 5. The variables influencing discomfort were the job. diet before donation and physical condition. As the result above. the student group of the first time platelet donor experienced highest anxiety. It is important to assess the physical condition and diet before donation for more comfortable platelet donation. Furthermore. the developments of nursing interventions are required to reduce anxiety and discomfort of platelet donors.
