A Study on Self Concept of Nursing Students.

This study was conducted to provide information of affective area in developing a nursing curriculum. The sample consisted of 38 sophomores and 43 seniors in Department of Nursing, College of Medicine, Han Yang University. Data were collected by using a structured questionnaire, which consisted of social, home and self control aspects in self concept. The results are summarized as follows; 1. CD In sophomore, as father's academic career were higher, the self concept In social aspects became higher. The students whose father's job was profesion and a white-collar job and who applied for nursing by force and were satisfied with their educational expenses had more positive self concept in social aspects. In senior, as their age were higher, the self concept in social aspects became higher. The students who had religion, recognized the visions of nursing, and were satisfied with their major, had more positive self concept in social aspects. In self concept in social aspects, home environment explained the major variable in sophomore. On the other side, the variable related to major was important in senior. (2) In sophomore, the students who were satisfied with educational expenses and their major had more positive self concept in home aspects. In senior, the students who counseled of their problems with their parents and recognized the visions of nursing had more positive self concept in home aspects. Counsel of their personal problem with their parents explained the most affective variable
for self concept in home aspects in senior. But, it explained only
of the variance for self concept in home aspects in sophomore. (3) In senior, the students who were unsatisfied with their educational expenses had more negative self concept in self control aspects. 2. There was no significant difference accord ing to the academic year m social, home and self control aspects. 3. The aspects with the highest positive perception of the self concept was home aspects. Self concept in social aspects was more positive perception than in self control aspects. Self concept in self control aspects was lower than in other aspects. 4. Significant relationship a revealed between social aspects and home aspects in sophomore. In senior, the positive correlation were found between social aspects and home aspects and between social aspects and self control aspects. In conclusion, the self concept m home aspects was more positive perception than in other aspects. It resulted from the fact that the nursing uniqueness was based on the spirit of humanity and service. But, when we consider social and self control aspects, good relationship between subjects and nurse is important in nursing, so it is desirable that nursing curriculum include human relationship program. Therefore. in order to strengthen positive self concept, professors and parents must pay attention to student's problems and counsel with then is required.
An Analysis on Contents of Health-Concerned Editorials of Five Leading Daily Newspapers in Korea

This study was carried out to analyze the social interests and demands in health-concerned editorials and to help formulate the public opinions in proper ways. The analysis covered the editorials of five leading news papers such as Chosun Ilbo, Han Kook Ilbo. Han Kyu Re, Joongang Ilbo, Donga Ilbo for the past three years from. June 1, 1987 to May 31, 1990. The major findings are as follows. 1. The total number of health-concerned editorials in the five daily newspapers for the period was 414. occupying

A study on perception of stress and coping patterns of family members of the hospitalized in patients

The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of stress and patterns of coping for that Stressful events on family members because of the hospitalization of the patients. Stress and coping were measured with a tool on the basis of Volicer and Bell's questionnaire. In data collection, the modified 38 items of Volicer's stress scale and Bell's 18 item coping scale were administered. The subjects consisted of 259 family members of general ward-patients in Seoul National University Hospital during April in 1990. They were randomly selected on the basis of relationship of patients; patient's spouse, patient's daughters or sons. The stressors of the family members were ranked as follows; The first rank Stressful events was related to the patient's diseases and pain, the second ones was related ·to caring of their patients and family's psychosocial life. Families used long term coping method significantly more than short term ones. The results indicated that there was no difference in use of coping method between pre and post hospitalization. Finding out more about situation and optimism were the most common coping methods, and the least frequent coping method was the use of drugs. In conclusion, the identification of perceived stress and coping patterns of family members provides useful information for family nursing and aimes at better nursing care for the hospitalized in patients.

Long-term Policy Development for the Aged on Medical and Health Care Security

The ageing problem of the population has been emerging in Korea since 1970's so that it is expecting the elderly 65 years and over among the total population from

This study was conducted to provide secure policy development in coming years for the aged on medical and health care aspects based on the examining current status of the aged problems and health care policies and systems. The study divided into four parts; The first part examined the medical insurance program and public assistance program of the health services in relation to the aged. The second part emphasized on reduction of medical care cost for the aged. The third part studied the regular health check-up program and health education for the aged. The fourth part examined the chronic disease management programs for the aged and strategies of the health care service quality improvement and specialized programs. The following recommendations made as the results of the study. 1. At present, the medical insurance program and public assistance program for the medically indigent is not appropriate to the elderly because it is a part of general medical insurance program so that Health Security Law for the Aged is proposed. 2. Medical cost will be increased due to the high occupancy rate of hospital beds and long stay of the elderly so that it is recommended to develop an early discharge program, home health care program, Health hospice and an althernative programs. 3. At present, a regular health check-ups for the elderly is not included in medical insurance program so that it is recommended to be included in the insurance program and at the same time health education program thoroughly developed for the aged. 4. To make proper medical and nursing services on chronic diseases for the elderly, it is recommended manpower development, specialized clinics or hospitals, nursing homes and an equivalent long term care facilitices should be established on the community based and a research institutions also to be related to supper the care programs.
