An Examination of the Current Health of University Students and a Systematic Approach to a Healthy Campus

Objectives: A healthy campus enables students to pursue their academic goals. This study examines the health in a broad spectrum of university students and suggests a systematic approach to building a healthy university campus. Methods: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1998-2009) results and the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (2000-2011) report were used as bases for this study. Results: The most common health problems were allergies, sinusitis, ear infections, anemia, depression, and stress among both American students and Korean young people in the 19-29 age group. American students were more likely to be overweight, while Korean young people were to become underweight. College students were also less likely to practice healthy behavior(i.e. vaccinations, physical activity, and not smoking). To build a healthy university campus, six areas of health services are suggested: medical care, health education, counseling, immunization, heath promotion, and employee assistance programs (EAP). In addition, universities should develop effective strategies to improve health on campus, such as community partnerships. Conclusions: To make the most of the limited resources requires a systematic approach that focuses on continuous monitoring of health on campus, health surveys, and collaboration between universities and their communities.
Development of Comprehensive Health Promotion Policies for University Students

Objectives: The purposes of this study were to describe comprehensive health promotion policies for university students in Korea and to discuss the implications based on the socio-ecological approaches. Methods: A web-based search was performed to identify empirical programs and literature to develop health promotion policies and strategies in university settings. Results: Five domains for policy development are suggested for comprehensive health promotion policies in universities: evidence-based policy development; establishment of supportive policy through network and partnership; infrastructure of university; systems approach with education, environment, enforcement and policy tailored for universities; and sustainability for policy implementation. Conclusions: For healthy universities and students, government, community, health professionals, organizations and universities are all responsible as main agents for the five domains suggested in this study. Multi-level approaches with political, organizational and environmental changes should be sustained as an ongoing process.
A Review of Cigarette Smoking-related Behaviors and Health Problems among University Students

Objectives: This article reviewed research on smoking behaviors and smoking-related health problems among university students to suggest evidences for developing smoking control strategies for them. Methods: Domestic research papers were screened through Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), Koreanstudies Information Service System (KISS), Medical Library Information System (MEDLIS), Korean Medical Database (KMbase), and digital national assembly library. International papers were searched mainly via PubMed. Results: Smoking prevalence among male college students were found to be over 50% in majority of Korean studies. While studies on smoking-related health problems were scant in Korea, several recent studies overseas showed possible effects of smoking on health among young adults, including decreased lung function, respiratory symptoms, cardiovascular problems, glucose intolerance, buccal disease, depressive symptoms, and so forth. Besides, smoking behaviors were closely related with other risk behaviors including drinking, and several psychosocial factors. Conclusions: To explore the smoking problem among college students, the first step should be a national representative survey with scientific methods. More research should be focused on the smoking-related problems among college students. To prevent smoking among college students, smoking prevention education, and smoking cessation counseling, and the initiatives of smoke free campus are needed.
Status of and Challenges for Physical Activity in Korean University Students

Objectives: This article intends to describe the status of and challenges for physical activity in Korean university students. Methods: National level secondary data and related articles were reviewed including KNHANES(Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) and Online Youth Health Behavior Survey. Four tables and two figures were generated from original data and related articles. Results: The proportion of Korean university students practicing regular physical activity appear to be about half of that in American students. Gender difference in physical activity practicing rate seems to be maintained in university years. The main reason for physical inactivity was that physical activity was bothersome. The trends of physical activity practice in Korean students since middle school years needs further research. Conclusions: To increase the rate of physical activity in Korean university students, evidence-based comprehensive approaches are needed including campaign and informational approaches, behavioral and social approaches and policy and environmental approaches adapted to Korean university students.
Gender Differences in Problem Gambling of University Students and their Relationship with Health Risk Behaviors

Objectives: This study aims to identify differences in problem gambling among Korean university students by gender and to analyze the relationship between problem gambling and health risk behaviors. Methods: With a sample of 2,026 4-year university students, a questionnaire included CPGI (Canadian Problem Gambling Index) scale and health risk behavior items was administered. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA were performed on the data. Results: The prevalence of gambling addiction of male students(14.6%) was two times higher than that of female students(6.6%). The severity of problem gambling was higher in: smokers, those with drug use experience, heavy drinkers, and those with frequently recurring suicidal thoughts, respectively. Conclusions: This study suggests that the problem gambling of university students is a complicated and comprehensive public health problem that is related with health risk behaviors such as alcohol drinking, smoking, drug use, and suicidal thoughts. Prevention strategies and policies are suggested based on the study results.
Characteristics of Suicides among University Students in Korea: An Analysis of News Reports

Objectives: This study is to gain an understanding of the characteristics of suicides committed by university students in Korea by assessing news reports. Methods: A total of 97 news reports on university student suicides on daily newspapers and TV newscasts from 2000 to 2011 are included in this study. Analyses were performed on sociodemographic characteristics of suicided university students and temporal and other characteristics of the suicides. Results: Suicide rate was higher among males than females. The most frequently used method of suicide was jumping off while the most common place was the students’ residence. Issues related to academic and financial problems topped as the reasons for suicide. There were no differences in the reasons for committing suicide by school year and enrollment, but the location and season of committing suicide differed by reasons for suicide. Conclusions: Implication of this study, discussion on the results and suggestions for suicide prevention are discussed.
Immunization, Knowledge, and Preventive Health Behaviors to Hepatitis A in University Students

Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the immunization, knowledge, and preventive health behaviors for hepatitis A in college students. Methods: Structured questionnaire survey data were collected from a convenient sample of 266 students at two universities in urban areas. Data were analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: Only 10.5 percent of the students reported having had hepatitis A vaccination. The levels of knowledge and compliance of preventive health behavior were moderate with the mean scores of 15.56(
), and 26.78(
), respectively. A significant correlation was found between knowledge and preventive health behaviors. The compliance to preventive health behaviors differed by education on hepatitis A in the past. Conclusions: Vaccination rate of hepatitis A found to be low and the knowledge and health behaviors for hepatitis A prevention among university students are limited. Provision of vaccination, education and strategies to enhance preventive health behaviors are warranted to prevent hepatitis A.
The Effects of Smoking on Aerobic Physical Fitness Factors among Physical Education Major Male University Students Participating in Regular Exercise

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of smoking on aerobic physical fitness among physical education major male university students participating in regular exercise. Methods: A group of 42 healthy male students majoring physical education were divided into two groups: non-smokers (n=
yrs) and smokers (n=16,
yrs). Graded exercise testing for maximal oxygen consumption (
) was measured by Bruce protocol. Results:
was not different between non-smokers and smokers, however, exercise duration time in non-smokers was more longer than smokers'. In non-smokers, ventilatory threshold (VT) time was delayed longer than smokers (p<0.01). %VT/VEmax was significantly different between non-smokers and smokers (p<0.01). Resting heart rate (p<0.01) and recovery heart rate at 80 seconds (p<0.01) in non-smokers were significantly lower than those of smokers. The decrease in heart rate recovery in non smokers was greater than in smokers at 40(p<0.05), 60(p<0.05) and 80(p<0.01) seconds. Conclusions: These results suggest that smoking has negative effects on aerobic fitness of male university students in physical education major.
The Influence of Learning?Social Integration and Self-doubt on the Suicidal Ideation of University Freshmen - Focusing on Moderating Effect of Drinking -

Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the influence of learning social integration and self-doubt on the suicidal ideation, and to test the mediating effect of self-doubt and the moderating effect of drinking on suicidal ideation. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to a convenience sample of 1,000 freshmen in a university in S city. A total of 803 questionnaires were included in the statistical analysis. To analysed the data, Pearson correlation and structural equation modeling were performed. Results: In this study, self-doubt had a mediating effects in the path way from learning social integration to suicidal ideation. Drinking had a moderating effect between self-doubt and suicidal ideation. Conclusions: The results suggest that the low level of learning social integration increases the level of self-doubt and leads to suicidal ideation. Drinking was a significant moderator of suicidal ideation. Therefore, interventions on various strategies to enhance academic performance and social interaction skill, and to help to stop or not to initiate drinking habit are needed in the early part of the freshman year.
Parental Abuse, Parental Alcoholism, and Suicidal Ideation of University Students: The Mediation Effects of Depression

Objectives: This paper examines the mediation effect of depression in the relationship between parental abuse, parental alcoholism, and suicidal ideation in university students. Methods: A survey on abusive experience from parents, parental alcoholism, depression, and suicidal ideation was conducted with 415 students from six universities. Structural equation analysis was performed using the AMOS program. Results: The result demonstrates that depression has some mediation effects between parental abuse and suicidal ideation in university students. Meanwhile, depression has an entire mediation effect between parental alcoholism and suicidal ideation. Conclusions: This study shows that the parental alcoholism by itself did not affect suicidal ideation in university students, but depression did. Experience of parental abuse is a significant risk factor which may cause suicidal ideation, and depression may cause suicidal ideation indirectly. It calls for efforts to prevent parental abuse and emphasizes the necessity of paying primary attention to the mediation effect of depression in preventing suicidal ideation.
Development and Efficacy Evaluation of a Web-based Prevention Programs of Alcohol-related Problems for University Students

Objectives: This study is to develop a web-based prevention program of alcohol-related problem among university students and to examine its efficacy in changing drinking behaviors and reducing harms associated with alcohol use. Methods: An hour-length program was developed containing news paper articles, pictures, stories and questionnaires in a multimedia format such as flash, animation, and text. Survey data were analyzed to examine program efficacy from a convenient sample of 1,080 freshmen enrolled in a participating university. Results: Participation in the program has resulted in statistically significant changes in drinking behavior between pretest and follow-up, including reduction of frequency of drinking, heavy drinking, and intoxication, typical amount of drinking per occasion, and subjective norm of heavy drinking. Repeated ANOVA revealed significant increases in knowledge on alcohol related facts, including recommended drinking unit by WHO with substantial level of effect size and in making negative alcohol expectancy with very low effect size. Further studies are guaranteed with randomized controlled trial for the program effectiveness. Conclusions: A web-based prevention program of alcohol-related problems in this study was efficacious in changing drinking behavior, knowledge on alcohol-related fact, alcohol expectancy and subjective drinking norm.
Development of "Drink Smart" Alcohol Education Program for University Students: Application of the Intervention Mapping and Transtheoretical Model

Objectives: This study attempted to apply the Intervention mapping and Transtheoretical models to develop a program to promote moderate alcohol drinking in university students. Methods: Surveyed data from 1,137 university students were analyzed to identify personal and environmental determinants for alcohol drinking. Based on these determinants, program objectives were established. Crossing the objectives with related important determinants resulted in matrices of learning objectives for which educational strategies were developed. Subsequently, an intervention program were designed to achieve those objectives. Results: Identified personal determinants included awareness, attitudes, self-efficacy and behavioral skills. Environmental determinants were binge drinking behaviors of family members and peers, and social pressure for drinking. Program, impact and learning objectives were developed to change the identified determinants. Program activities included provision of information on positive and negative consequences of binge drinking, opportunities for assessing one's drinking pattern, increasing outcome expectancies of and skill building for monitoring drinking, resisting peer pressure and managing stress. To facilitate adoption and maintenance of the program, an intervention diffusion plan was suggested. An evaluation plan was developed by utilizing RE-AIM framework. Conclusions: In order to expand evidence bases for effective theory-based programs, the developed program should be tested in diverse university settings.
