Study on establishment of emission cell test method for liquid phase building materials

The aim of this study was to evaluate and establish of emission test method for liquid phase building materials such as paint, adhesive, sealant by emission cell. A small-scale emission chamber and emission cell were used to evaluate emission of TVOC from paint, adhesive, sealant. The quantity of TVOC emission were measured by a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Background concentration of TVOC was below
in the emission chamber and cell. Air tightness and recovery in chamber and cell showed good results. The recovery of thermal desorber for toluene and n-dodecane were about 120%. The repeatability of response factor and retention time in GC/MS below 30%. The method detection limit of VOCs ranged 0.04~8.82 ng. The concentration of TVOC emission using emission cell was 1.35~1.41 times higher than emission chamber. The correlation of TVOC emission using chamber and cell method was significantly high (r=0.91~0.97).
Monitoring of some heavy metals in oriental animality medicines

Four heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As, and Hg) in 38 species (total 325 samples) of oriental animality medicines were monitored by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and automatic mercury analyzer (AMA). The detected concentration range of Pb, Cd, As was presented as
, respectively. In case of Hg, it the concentration range was
except one sample which exceeded detection limit. In all samples of Amydae Carapax and Gallnut, it was not detected over the maximum residue limits of metals. Pb is in charge of the greatest portion of contamination in 22 species of animality medicines, and in case of Hg, 54.46% of total samples were over the maximum residue limits. Therefore, environmental levels of Pb and Hg are needed to continue the researches and the studies for tracking pollution source are required.
Simultaneous determination of amphetamine derivatives and norketamine in hair by GC-MS/MS

A gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for simultaneous determination of amphetamine derivatives and norketamine in human hair. Preparation of hair involves external decontamination, mechanical pulverization, incubation and extraction prior to instrumental analysis. The samples were derivatized using heptafluorobutyric anhydride, and analyzed by GC-MS/MS. The linear ranges were 0.05-20.0 ng/mg for the analytes except for 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine, with good coefficients of determination (
>0.998). The intra-day and inter-day precisions were within 10.7% and 8.5%, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day accuracies were between -1.6 and 17.0% and -2.6 and 10.5%, respectively. The limits of detections for each analyte were lower than 0.007 ng/mg, while recoveries were 75.9-100.9%. When the method was applied to hair samples obtained from suspected drug abusers, the concentrations in hair samples were 0.97-19.30 ng/mg for methamphetamine and 0.14-2.56 ng/mg for amphetamine.
Primary study of sterols composition of Rhodiola sachalinensis by using GC/MS

The steroid compounds in Rhodiola sachalinensis were determined with adsorption column chromatographic purification and GC/MS. Sterols were extracted by sonication and Soxhlet with ethanol and dichloromethane, respectively. The extract was partitioned with chloroform and water using liquid-liquid extraction, and purified with a silica column after the sterols had been converted to the corresponding silyl derivatives with BSTFA. Eighteen free sterols, including
-sitosterol, stigmasterol and cycloartenol, and nine sterol conjugates were found from Rhodiola sachalinensis by GC/MS. Among them, cholest-5-ene-3-ol, cholesterol, stigmasterol,
-sitosterol were confirmed and quantified with sterol standards. Most sterols were presented in the chloroform part, with
being the most abundant group in this sterol group.
-sitosterol was the most abundant compound with a relative content of 45.94% followed by ergost-7-ene-3-ol (11.33%), 4,14-dimethyl-ergosta-8,24(28)-diene-3-ol (7.07%), stigmasterol (6.09%), cycloartenol (5.43%) and 4-methyl-cholest-5-ene-3-ol (5.39%).
Analysis on the substrate specificity and inhibition effect of Brassica oleracea glutathione S-Transferase

To gain further insight into herbicide detoxification of plant, we purified a glutathione S-transferase from Brassica oleracea (BoGST) and studied its substrate specificity towards several xenobiotic compounds. The BoGST was purified to electrophoretic homogeneity with approximately 10% activity yield by DEAE-Sephacel and GSHSepharose column chromatography. The molecular weight of the BoGST was determined to be approximately 23,000 by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and 48,000 by gel chromatography, indicating a homodimeric structure. The activity of the BoGST was significantly inhibited by S-hexyl-GSH and S-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)GSH. The substrate specificity of the BoGST displayed high activities towards CDNB, a general GST substrate and ethacrynic acid. It also exhibited GSH peroxidase activity toward cumene hydroperoxide.
Trace element analysis of korean car windshield using LA-ICP-MS

The analyses of minor and trace elements in glass debris were performed using LA-ICP-MS in order to identify manufacturers using real commercial samples. At first, a calibration curve was made using standard glass samples of NIST 610, 612, 614 and 616.
was used as an internal standard, and the ratios of metal/Si for each metal were compared with their concentrations. Based on elements in each sample and standard materials, 24 metals were quantified and the LOD in analysis, according to the blank sample, was in the range of 0.11 mg/kg (Ti)-4.91 mg/kg (Ca). Eleven samples from two manufacturers were collected and five sub-samples were taken from each sample for analysis. 15 elements (Co, Ce, Ca, Mn, Sr, Ba, Li, Rb, U, La, Th, Na, Al, Zr and Hf) were selected to identify manufacturers because some elements (Cu, Cr, Cd and Ni) were below the detection limit and some elements (Ti, Pr, Mg, Nb, Nd) were absent in the analysis of standards and others (Pb and Sn) had a problem of homogeneity. The attempts to identify manufacturers and the manufacturing period were performed through a triangular diagram. In the manufacturer discrimination by discriminant analysis, a canonical discriminant function was made based on Mn, Ce and Rb, and each sample could be identified.
The development of encoded porous silicon nanoparticles and application to forensic purpose

Porous silicon films are electrochemically etched from crystalline silicon wafers in an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid(HF). Careful control of etching conditions (current density, etch time, HF concentration) provides films with precise, reproducible physical parameters (morphology, porosity and thickness). The etched pattern could be varied due to (1) current density controls pore size (2) etching time determines depth and (3) complex layered structures can be made using different current profiles (square wave, triangle, sinusoidal etc.). The optical interference spectrum from Fabry-Perot layer has been used for forensic applications, where changes in the optical reflectivity spectrum confirm the identity. We will explore a method of identifying the specific pattern code and can be used for identities of individual code with porous silicon based encoded nanosized smart particles.
Fabrication of Fe-ACF/TiO
composites and their photonic activity for organic dye

Activated carbon fiber treated with iron compound (Fe-ACF) was employed for preparation of Feactivated carbon fiber/
) composite catalysts. Then, the prepared Fe-ACF/
composite catalysts were characterized by employing BET, SEM, XRD and EDX instruments. It showed that BET surface area was related to adsorption capacity for each composite. The SEM results showed that ferric compound and titanium dioxide were distributed on the surfaces of ACF. The XRD results showed that Fe-ACF/
composite mostly contained an anatase structure with a Fe mediated compound. EDX results showed the presence of C, O, and Ti with Fe peaks in Fe-ACF/
composites. From photocataytic degradation effect, it was observed in the organic dye (Methylene blue, MB) degradation by these composites. Different degradation effect can be attributed to the synergetic effects of photo-Fenton reaction of Fe. It was considered that the combined reactions of Fe-ACF/
produce powerful photo-Fenton process in the MB degradation.
A comparative study on consolidants for bronze objects conservation

The purpose of metal artifacts conservation is recovering the original state of objects and preventing it from further corrosion. Four different consolidants are selected that are widely used for bronze objects conservation. This study found out the characteristics of thin film by various experiments and analysis for the bronze plates coated using each solutions. After a series of analysis, resin B and V showed good coating properties. However, the evaluation point suited to this purpose are adhesive strength, stability against yellowing and corrosion resistance. Therefore, resin B of four different consolidants could expect to get the most suitable consolidation effect for consolidation purpose.
Generation characteristics of disinfection by-products (DBPs) by chlorination in sewage effluent

This study was performed to investigate the disinfection efficiency and the generation characteristics of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the sewage effluent. In the case of total coliforms, disinfection efficiency higher than 99%, the required contact time was 30 min at chlorine dose of 0.5 mg/L, 20 min at 1.0 mg/L, and 10 min at 1.5 mg/L, respectively. When the sewage effluent was disinfected with chlorine dose of 0.5 mg/L for 10 min, the maximum generation concentration of trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetonitriles (HANs) and haloacetic acid (HAAs) were
, respectively. The concentration of chloroform was
corresponding to 88.1% of the THMs. The concentration of HANs and HAAs were found to be inconsiderable. The average residual chlorine concentration of sewage effluent was 0.4 mg/L, the generation concentration of THMs was maximum
. HANs and HAAs were under the detection limit by GC/MSD.
