A Constitutive Equation with Impulse-Momentum Theory for the Expanded Polypropylene

In this paper, impulse-momentum theory was coupled to a constitutive equation both for implementing quasi-static and impact characteristics of EPP (Expanded polypropylene). Also, parameters which have physical meanings were expressed as functions of relative density. Simultaneous nonlinear Newton-Raphson method was applied to find the proper values for parameters in the constitutive equation along with quasi-static test data. Results from the impulse-momentum theory coupled constitutive equation showed good agreement with experimental data and the potential to be applied to different material type polymeric foam.
Microwave Absorbing Structure Using Semiconductive Fiber Reinforced Composite

This paper deals with the fabrication and verification of the microwave absorbing structure using semiconductive fiber reinforced composite. Two kinds of fiber were used to fabricate composites. Electromagnetic properties of the composites were measured by freespace measurement system over X-band. Two single slab absorbers and a double slab absorber were designed by thickness optimization method. Single slab absorbers did not show good microwave absorption performance because the permittivity is away from non-reflection curve. Double slab absorber complemented the limitations on single slab absorber and it showed good microwave absorption performance. Double slab absorber showed -43.9 dB loss near 10 GHz.
Simultaneous Exfoliation and Dispersion of Graphene/Carbon Nanotube via Intercalation Reaction and Its Application as Conductive Composite Film

This paper reports a novel method for simultaneous exfoliation of graphene and dispersion of carbon nanotube by using intercalation method. In common, graphene flake and carbon nanotubes can be produced through individual exfoliation or debundling process, but the process require significant amount of time. Here, potassium sodium tartrate was thermally intercalated into graphite and carbon nanotube bundle for simultaneous exfoliation and dispersion of graphene and carbon nanotubes. We confirmed expansion of interlayer distance via XRD, and also found that oxidation level of the exfoliated materials were significantly low (below 8.3 at%). The produced materials are fabricated in to conductive composite film via vacuum filtration and spray deposition to show enhancement of conductive properties.
Study on the Durability of Composite Tilting Pad Journal Bearing for Turbo Compressor System under Oil-cut Situation

The tilting pad journal bearing for the turbo compressor application has a role to support high speed and heavy loading rotor. White metal has been widely used for the bearing material but the conventional bearing is immediately suspended and induces serious serious damage to the rotor under the unexpected oil cut situation or the insufficient oil film formation. The carbon fiber reinforced composite having high specific stiffness, specific strength and excellent tribological characteristics can solve these seizure problems. In this work, the study on the durability of high thermal resistance carbon fiber/epoxy composite tilting pad journal bearing under oil cut situation was conducted. The material properties of the composite materials including tensile, compressive and interlaminar properties were measured at room and high temperature of oil cut situation. To investigate the possibility of failure of composite tilting pad journal bearing under oil cut situation, the stress distribution of the composite bearing was analyzed via finite element analysis and the Tsai-Wu Failure index was calculated. To verify the failure analysis results, the oil cut tests for the composite tilting pad journal bearing were conducted using industrial test bench.
Failure Characteristics of Scarf Patch-repaired Composite Single-lap Joints

The failure strength of composite single-lap joint repaired using scarf patch was investigated by test and finite element method. A total of 45 specimens were tested changing scarf ratio, stacking pattern, and defect size to study the failure strength and mode. Except for one case, all repaired specimens showed the equal or higher strength than the sound specimens and the effect of considered repair parameters was not remarkable. It was found through the failure mode inspection that the surface treatment for bonding was not enough in the case which failed at the lower load than the sound specimen. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to verify the test results. It was confirmed that the considered repair parameters do not significantly affect the stress distribution of the specimens. It was also observed that the applied tensile load is relieved passing through the overlapped region thickness of which is almost double. From this study, it is concluded that if the bonding procedure for adherends and patch including surface treatment for fabric layer is thoroughly followed, the strength of repaired single-lap joint can be restored up to the strength of sound one.
