Fatigue Resistance of Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Concrete in Flexible Pavement

The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the possibility of improvement in fatigue resistance of asphalt concrete mixture using the industrial waste material of K fiber. In this research, as an experimental equipment, the MTS with Closed-Loop Servohydraulic System was used and it was designed according to the U.S. standard testing procedure of ASTM D 4123. According to the test results, the optimum content of fiber with the length of 8mm was about 0.2 percent of total mixture weight. The optimum asphalt content for the fiber-reinforced asphalt concrete was about 5.5 percent of total mixture weight. Fatigue resistance of fiber-reinforced asphalt concrete was noticeable compared to the conventional dense-graded 20 asphalt concrete. In addition, the resilient moduli of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture were
times higher than those of conventional asphalt concrete.
Drought Evaluation by A Drought Frequency Formula

Drought is a very difficult natural disaster to overcome because its beginning and end are not clear to define, and it is widely distributed in space and has long term persistence. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the drought at Mokpo using drought frequency formula suggested by Sharma(1997). The precipitation records for the period 1906-1999 at Mokpo meteorological station are used for drought analysis. The most severe drought year is found to be that of 1995, which is of the 30-year frequency, and 18 drought years are selected based on the 5-year drought frequency.
Longitudinal Stress Distributions around Construction Joints of PSC Bridge Girders

There exist many construction joints in segmentally constructed bridge girders. It is required coupling of tendons or overlapping of tendons to introduce continuous prestress through several spans of bridges. Even though tendon coupling method is easier to use in practice, some cracking problems around construction joints have been reported and complicated stress states around construction joints in PSC girders is not clearly investigated. The purpose of this paper is to investigate in detail the complicated longitudinal stress distributions around the construction joints in prestressed concrete girders with tendon couplers. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and a series of specimens have been tested to identify the effects of tendon coupling and segmental construction of bridge sections. The present study indicates that the longitudinal stress distributions of PSC girders with tendon couplers are quite different from those of PSC girders without tendon couplers. The longitudinal compressive stresses introduced by prestressing are greatly reduced around coupled joints according to tendon coupling ratios.
Comparative Study on the Distribution of Sediment Deposits Along the Soyang-gang Dam by Measurement Data

An analysis to allocate storage space for sediment accumulation during the economic life of the reservoir is required in the planning or design of a reservoir. This analysis has been the most difficult and tedious aspect to deal with reservoir sedimentation because of the interaction between the various parameters related to the hydraulics of flow, reservoir operating policy, inflowing sediment load. The approach to analyzing spatial distribution of deposits has relied on empirical methods, all of which required a great deal of simplification from the actual physical phenomena. For the purpose of this study, reservoir sedimentation rate computed by Empirical Area Reduction Method is compared with measuring rate along the Soyang-gang Dam. As a conclusion, reservoir sedimentation rate can be estimated exactly by Empirical Area Reduction Method.
A Study on the Support Conditions of Cable-stayed Bridge System

The objective of this study is to evaluate elastic modulus of bridge-axis direction for optimum structure system in the cable-stayed bridge design. In numerical example of this study, a slight change in axis direction elastic modulus causes major modifications of the bridge characteristics when it is
tonf/m/bearing or less. Therefore, the elastic modulus was set at this lower limit of
tonf/m/bearing where the strength of the entire bridge system is still determined by girder strength and the entire system is insensitive to variations in elastic modulus. Besides, cable-stayed bridge with freely supported girders have slightly longer vibration periods in the horizontal direction for earthquake forces.
