The Crevice Corrosion Behavior of AISI 304 & 316L Stainless Steel Welded by TIG, MIG, CO2 and SMA

The crevice corrosion behavior on austenitic AISI 304 and 316L stainless steel welded by TIG, MIG,
and SMA was studied. The results are as follows : In 10%
solution and natural sea water sampled near Mokpo port, the base metal of 304 stainless steel showed small amount corrosion, whereas 316L stainless steel did not showed any corrosion in the test periods. The weight loss caused by crevice corrosion increased with increasing weld heat input and residual .delta. ferrite formed in welded part. The corrosion resistance of the welded part was in the order of TIG, MIG,
and SMA. From this tendency, it is proved that the smaller heat input gives the better corrosion resistance.
A Study on the Development of Ship's Stern Tube Sealing System(I) -Based on Lip Seals-

Lip type stern tube sealing systems have used in almost all the middle or large ships which are being constructed in these days. It seems that the pressure fluctuation of the seal ring interspace, the cross-section profile and the materials quality of the seal rings have great effects on the sealing fuction of this sealing system. In this paper, the mechanical movement of lip seal ring which plays the most important role in stern tube sealing system and the possibility of leakage caused by pressure fluctuation are studied by theory and experiment. Using the finite element method for the axi-symetric object which receives the torsional load, the displacement and stress analysis of the seal rings, and also the possibility of crack occurance is checked by theoretical analysis. If the force which seal ring lip periphery receives is too small, there will be the possibility of leakage caused by the pressure fluctuation of the seal ring interspace, and if this force is too large, the frictional force between the seal ring and the liner will become problematical. The possibility of leakage caused by hardening of seal ring materials and creep phenomena of tested seal rings are also examined. The trial seal rings were designed and manufactured using the program of displacement and stress analysis developed in this study and the experimental apparatus to test the trial seal rings was also designed and manufactured. This trial seal rings were fitted in the experimental apparatus which was made in the same form as an actual stern tube. The one side of this apparatus was filled with sea water and the other side of it was filled with the lubricating oil. The leakage of oil and sea water was checked and the temperature was measured, rotating the propeller shaft at the constant velocity by D.C. motor. It was proved that the trial seal rings made in Viton rubber functioned excellenty but the trial seal rings made in N.B.R. rubber had problem in its durability.
Analysis of Flow Field in Cavity Using Finite Analytic Method

In the present study, Navier-Stokes equation is numerically solved by use of a Finite analytic method to obtain the 2-dimensional flow field in the square cavity. The basic idea of F.A.M. is the incorporation of local analytic solutions in the numerical solution of linear or non-linear partial differential equations. In the F.A.M., the total problem is subdivided into a number of all elements. The local analytic solution is obtained for the small element in which the governing equation, if non-linear, to be linearized. The local analytic solutions are then expressed in algebraic form and are overlapped to cover the entire region of the problem. The assembly of these local analytic solutions, which still preserve the overall nonlinearity of the governing equations, results in a system of linear algebraic equations. The system of algebraic equations is then solved to provide the numerical solutions of the total problem. The computed flow field shows the same characteristics to physical concept of flow phenomena.
Position Control of a Hydraulic Cylinder by a Differential PWM Method

This study deals with the position control of a hydraulic cylinder system operated by two port 3-way high speed solenoid valve in Pulse-Width-Modulation mode, instead of using conventional electro-hydraulic servovalve. Due to the complexity and the relatively poor reliability of the servovalve, an actuator using simpler and more study high speed solenoid valve will be presented. The high speed solenoid valve acts as converters of electronic pulse signal to hydraulic ones. It has been pointed out that there are practical problems to be solved in the PWM system, that is (1) accuracy of positioning control becomes considerably insufficient because the system is affected by on/off action of the solenoid valves, and (2) serious nonlinerality appears in the valve characteristics as a result of the switching behavior of the valves. As a method to overcome these defects, the differential PWM driving method of a hydraulic cylinder that improved the steady-state-error, flow rate nonlinearity in simple PWM, and the hydraulic hunting of dead time compensated-PWM driving is proposed in this study.
