A Development Study on the Evaporation Type Large Fresh Water Generator
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 1~12
Most merchant ships are supplied with the only essential fresh water from a port for economical cargo transportation and the reduction of a nevigation expense. And the deficient fresh water for a voyage is produced by fresh water generator with the various exhaust energy generated in the engine room on a voyage. At present, an evaporation type fresh water generator are extensively used on ship because the operating cost of it is lower than that of a reverse osmosis pressure type. This study introduce a development results on the large evaporation type fresh water generator enable to be used for large merchant ships. It is accomplished the performance test using the developed large fresh water generator.
A Study on the Vacuum System for High Efficiency Marine Steam Turbine System
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 13~24
The demand of clean energy, like liquefied gas(LNG), increase suddenly because it generates few polluting substances when burned and from the point of view with caloric value it generates ralatively less
gas than the other energy sources. LNG transpotion method of our country is marine transportion by ships because the LNG producing district is far away from Korea. Main engines for most LNG ships are steam turbines, and the efficiency of steam turbine is influenced by the degree of vacuum of main steam condenser. This paper introduce the design method of the vacuum system for high efficiency marine steam turbine. Especially, it is developed the CAD program for the large steam condenser and steam ejector. Also, it is designed the pilot plant including high pressure boiler for the performance test and maked a part of this plant.
Sliding Mode Control of a Robot Manipulator by the Impedance Approach
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 25~32
This paper presents a robust impedance controller design to coordinate a robot manipulator under system uncertainties while regulating external forces. By an impedance approach, the relationship between the motion and external forces is defined. Due to the system uncertainties, two kind of sliding mode control schemes based on the impedance approach are derived to ensure that the manipulator end-effector follows a desired trajectory and the force applied to end effector is regulated according to a target impendance. A stability condition is shown according to a sliding condition. To evaluate the devised control scheme, a numerical example is shown.
A Study on the Radiative Heat Transfer Characteristics in the Fluidized Particles Layer
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 33~42
The radiative heat transfer analysis in the fluidized particles layer has important application in many technological areas such as combustion chambers at high pressure and temperature, plasma generators for nuclear fusion, MHD generator using pulverized coal and the liquid droplet radiator used to reject wasted heat from a power plant operating in space. To accurately model the radiation properties of the fluidized particles layer, it is necessary to know the radiation interchange factors of particles in each layer. But the solutions are usually not possible for the equations of radiative heat transfer because it has an inherent difficulty in treating the governing intergo- differential equations, which are derived from the remote effects of radiative heat transfer. In this study, the analysis uses the Monte Carlo simulation method with optical depth model to calculate the radiation interchange factors of particles in each layer with wall and with each other.
Spray Characteristics on Shape of Twin Fluid atomizer by Internal Mixing Chamber Type
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 43~52
I investigated experomentally the spray characteristics to the operating conditions and the shapes of internal mixing twin fluid atomizer. The wide variations of air per liquid ratio are conducted to predit the influences of the Sauter mean diameter(SMD), spray angle, distribution of drop size, the flowing condition of gas and length, flowing, area of gas and liquid, and diameter, number and place of the orifice. In this experiment, air per liquid raio, mixing chamber length per diameter, orifice diameter, and the flowing area ratio of gas and fluid influences greatly on SMD, spray angle, distribution of drop size and intermittent fluctuation region.
Performance of the Cooling and Heating of Heat Pump Using Non-azeotropic Refrigerant Mixtures
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 53~61
An experimental study on heat pump cycle systematizing characteristics for non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures of R-22+R-114 was reported. Data were obtained under steady state condition at the ranges of parameters, 550- 2, 170kcal/h, 670-2, 990kcal/h, 24-71kg/h, and 0-1, for as cooling capacity, heating capacity, mass 25, 50, 75, and 100 per cent of R-22 by weight fraction for R-22+R-114 mixtures. The results shown that the C.O.P of the 50wt% of R-22 mixture was considerably larger than for pure R-22 and other weight fraction of R-22 mixtures, but the compression power of the 25wt% of R-22 was lower than that of the pure R-22 and the other weight fraction of R-22 mixtures. The hightest value of cooling capacity was obtained at the conditions of evaporating temperature 5.deg.C and R-22 50wt% mixture. In general, with an increase in the R-22 weight fraction for fixed values of the other parameter, the cooling capacity increased at first, obtained a maximum, and then decreasd. This verified the importance of accurate weight fractions od refrigerant mixtures in the heat pump cycle.
A Study on the Development and the Monitoring of Micro Hole Drilling Machine
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 62~68
Recently, the trends toward reduction in size and weight of industrial products increased the application of micro hole for manufacturing gadgets of high precision and gave rise to a great deal of interest for micro hole drilling M/C. Quite a few research work is performed on micro drilling on domestic basis compared with the tendency of analyzing cutting mechanism, adaptive control, monitoring of generally available drills of diameter greater than 1mm. This study adresses the design, manufacturing and controlling a micro hole drilling M/C with the overload detection instrument and the step feed mechanism. Controlling and monitoring of the drilling process are acomplished on PC basis for more user interfaces and effectiveness. The test machine of the results of this research shows a good foundation for extending further micro hole machining technique.
A Study on the Thermo-elasto-plastic Analysis of Upset Forming
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 69~76
Thermal elasto-plastic analysis of axi-symmetric body by the finite element method is presented in this paper for analyzing the process of upset forming of circular section extruded bar. The example of calculation for upset forming of Nimonic extruded bar is also presented. It is shown that remeshing of quadrilateral finite element is necessary because the very highly distorted element by plastic deformation disturbs the calculation. Calculated values for nodal points in new mesh are obtained from nodal points of old mesh by linear interpolation method. The experimental results are compared with calculated values. The appearance of upsetupset forming obtained by experimental method is very similar to that obtained by calculations. So, it is proved that the thermal elasto-plastic analysis of axi-symmetric body by the finite element method is very useful for finding the optimum upsetting condition.
Optimal Control of a First Order System
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 77~83
In this paper, an optimal control of first order systems is discussed. The control system comprises a main controller and an auxiliary controller. The main controller is designed based on the LQ control scheme including an integrator to remove the off-set. The non-linear auxiliary controller is added parallely to the main controller to obtain a finite time settling control. The control parameters under variation of the system and various coefficients of the performance indices are computed numerically, and the control responses for the system with the proposed controllers demonstrated the usefulness of the control method.
A Study on the Design and Development of Gas Burner for Gas Furnace
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 84~93
The purpose of this study is to modify the kerosene furnace, which is forced flue type with 15000kcal capacity, to gas furnace satisfying for CITY gas, LNG gas and LPG gas. The gas furnace, a kind of gas appliance, is mainly used for heating houses by combusion of gas. This paper describes briefly the design technology for gas burner which is most important in replacing kerosene fuel with gas fuel. Especially, the design for gas nozzle is constructed by theoretical and experimental method. It is found that the experimental results of the modified gas burner are good agreement with the theoretical results for calorific value and combustion efficiency. The result of this study will contribute in the design skill and of gas burner and similar gas appliance, and the pursuit for reduction of fuel cost as well as atmospheric pollution.

Robust Motion Control of Robotic Manipulators with Nonadaptive Model-based Compensation
You, S. S. ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Marine Engineering, volume 18, issue 4, 1994, Pages 102~111
This article deals with the problem of designing a robust algorithm for the motion control of robot manipulator whose nonlinear dynamics contain various uncertainties. To ensure high performance of control system, a model-based feedforward compensation with continuous robust control has been developed. The control structure based on the deterministic approach consists of two parts : the nominal control law is first introduced to stabilize the system without uncertainties, then a robust nonlinear control law is adopted to compensate for both the resulting errors(or structured uncertainties) and unstructured uncertainties. The uncertainties assumed in this study are bounded by polynomials in the Euclidean norms of system states with known bounding coefficients. The presented control scheme is relatively simple as well as computationally efficient. With a feasible class of desired trajectories, the proposed control law provides sufficient criteria which guarantee that all possible responses of the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded in the presence of uncertainties. Therefore, the control algorithm proposed is shown to be robust with respect to the involved uncertainties.
