Analysis of a Cryogenic System for Cord Blood Banking

The application of a cryogenic storage system is growing fast in different kinds of fields including to keep umbilical cord blood. Umbilical cord blood stem plays an important role in the treatment of a blood and immune system related genetic diseases, cancers and blood disorders. This study gives the optimal cryogenic system for cord blood banking. Three-dimensional models are employed and finite element method is used to do structure analyses of all designed models. The results shows model 3 have a good structure properties, and model 4 shows the best structure property as its maximum is 92.9 MPa. The other is too dangerous or infeasible to support load condition that allowed by STS 304. The results can be used in the design of these kinds of systems to obtain good predictions of trends over a wide range of design alternatives and operating conditions.
An Experimental Investigation of Unsteady Mixed Convection in a Horizontal Channel with Cavity Using Thermo-Sensitive Liquid Crystals

An experimental study is performed to investigate unsteady mixed convection in a horizontal channel with a heat source. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) with thermo-sensitive liquid crystal (TLC) tracers is used for visualization and analysis. This method allows simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature fields at a given instant of time. Quantitative data of the temperature and velocity are obtained by applying the color-image processing to a visualized image, and neural network is applied to the color-to-temperature calibration. It is found that the periodic flow of mixed convection in a cavity appears at very low Reynolds numbers (Re<0.4), and the period decreases with increasing Reynolds numbers and increases with increasing aspect ratio.
Effect of Air Gap Thickness on Top Heat Loss of a Closed-loop Oscillating Heat Pipe Solar Collector

In this paper, effect of air gap thickness between absorber plate and glass cover on top heat loss of a closed loop oscillating heat pipe (CLOHP) solar collector was investigated. The CLOHP, which is made of copper with outer diameter of 3.2mm and inner diameter of 2.0mm, comprises 8 turns with heating, adiabatic and cooling section. The heating section of the heat pipe was attached to absorber plate which heated by solar simulator simulated by halogen lamps. The cooling section of the heat pipe was inserted into collector's cooling section that made of transparent acrylic. Temperatures of absorber plate, glass cover, and ambient air measured by K-type thermocouple and were recorded by MV2000-Yokogawa recorder. Top heat loss coefficients and top heat loss of the collector corresponding to some cases of air gap thickness were determined. The result of experiment shows the optimal air gap thickness for minimum top heat loss of this solar collector.
A Study on High Precision Temperature Control of an Oil Cooler for Machine Tools Using Hot-gas Bypass Method

This study aims at precise control of oil outlet temperature in the oil cooler system of machine tools for enhancement of working speed and processing accuracy. PID control logic is adopted to obtain desired oil outlet temperature of the oil cooler system with hot-gas bypass method. We showed that the gains of PID controller could be easily determined by using gain tuning methods to get the gain of PID controller without any mathematical model. We also investigated various gain tuning methods to design the gains of PID and compared each control performance for selecting the optimal tuning method on the hot gas bypass method through experiments. Moreover, we confirmed excellent control performance with proposed PI controller gain even though disturbances were abruptly added to the experimental system.
The Study of Overtopping Wave Energy Converter Control and Monitoring System

This paper describes the control and monitoring system for OWEC (Overtopping Wave Energy Converter) which shows the characteristic of power stabilization in overtopping wave energy converter system. Overtopping waves generates different water pressure and the turbine is rotated by this pressure. As a result, overtopping wave energy converter is able to convert wave energy into electricity. Small size of overtopping wave energy converter is developed to simulate the control monitoring system which is able to control power generation and also monitor the system condition. The result shows the reduction of fluctuation from the overtopping wave energy system by the developed control monitoring system. In addition, the DB(Data Base) of test results are contributed to the research and development for OWEC.
A Study on the Composite Blade Performance Variation by Attaching Erosion Shield for Hovercraft

This study intends to study about the blade performance loss occurred due to the variation in the shape of airfoil from the attachment/non-attachment of blade erosion shield for hovercraft. This study model has used NACA 4412, has designed NACA 4412 by using Auto CAD and designed the shape that has attached an erosion shield to this model according to the thickness and length. By using these models, we have generated a grid by using GAMBIT and calculated the lift coefficient (Cl) and drag coefficient (Cd) by using the FLUENT code for flow analysis. Through this, we have calculated and compared the lift-to-drag ratio that is an indicator of airfoil performance according to the shape and attachment/non-attachment of erosion shield.
A Study on the Microstructural, Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Silicon Nitride Ceramic

Fine ceramics have high strength, excellent wear resistance, chemical stability and high strength at high temperature and are receiving attention in various fields such as construction, engineering, aerospace and marine science. Finish machining process is required to obtain precise ceramics components because sintering process necessary for obtaining high strength and high quality ceramics reduces the dimensions of components and precision of shape. But high strength and brittleness of ceramics materials cause difficulty in processing. So a process for obtaining wanted dimensions is studying using high temperature which makes ceramics softened and thermal affected recently. Laser beam is a very useful optical device for these kinds of processes. Laser process such as laser cutting, laser machining, laser heat treatment and laser-assisted machining(LAM) is researching to manufacture practical ceramics components using intense laser source which can cause local softening and damage of workpiece. In this paper, microstructural and mechanical properties of silicon nitride heated are studied as a basic study for researching of ceramics process by laser beam. The surface variation of HIP and SSN-silicon nitride was analyzed with SEM and EDS. A processing at
or above causes N element to combine into
gas and the gas busts from surface. These phenomena make bloat, craters and heat defects on the surface of silicon nitride. Also, oxygen content is largely increased to oxidize the surface and it causes changing of phases and reducing of hardness of surface.
Effect of Snubber-Array on Variation of Pressure Characteristics in Reciprocating Hydrogen Compression

Hydrogen energy is becoming popular day by day due to its renewability and pollutaaant free natures. Hydrogen gas pressure which is after passing through reciprocating compressor part has high pulsation wave form. A unit, snubber is used as compressor components to reduce the harmful pulsation waveform and to remove the impurities in the hydrogen gas. An experiment has been conducted to investigate the pulsation reduction performance of different arrangement of snubber i.e. snubber array used in reciprocating compression system. Analyzing the snubber array experimental data, it is found that the pressure fluctuations are reduced from 90.1977% ~ 92.6336% with pressure loss 1.5013% ~ 4.9034% for compressor operation at different speed which ensure the good performance of snubber-array as pulsation damper in hydrogen compressing system.
Study on Quantitative Analysis of Wear Debris for Surface Modification Layers Ti(C,N) with Piston Ring on Diesel Engine Oil

During contact between surfaces, there is wear and the generation of wear. The particles contained in the lubricating oil carry detailed and important monitoring information about the condition of the machine. Therefore, this paper was undertaken for the Ferrography system of wear debris generated from a lubricated moving machine surface. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the Falex wear test of the Pin and V-Block types by Ti(C,N) coated. It was shown from the test results that wear particle concentration(WPC), wear severity index(Is) and size distribution have come out all higher with increases in sliding friction time. With the Ferrogram thin leaf wear debris as well as ball and plate type wear particles were observed.
A Study on the Performance Analysis of Francis Hydraulic Turbine

The effects of varying the inlet flow angle on the output power of a Francis hydraulic turbine were studied numerically and the result was compared to the experimental results conducted at Korea Institute of Energy Research to determine the brake power of the turbine for each set of operating conditions. The loss of mechanical power of the model turbine was determined by comparing the numerical and experimental results, and thus the turbine efficiency or energy conversion efficiency of the model turbine could be estimated. From the result, it was found that the maximum brake efficiency of the turbine is approximately 46% at an induced angle of 35 degrees. The maximum indicated mechanical efficiency of the turbine is approximately 93% at an induced angle of 25~30 degrees.
Fundamental Study of an Integrated Control Method for a Linear Motor Driven Container Crane System

The authors have proposed a linear motor driven container crane system, in which the linear motor to drive trolley chassis is also used to control swaying motion of a hanging container. To utilize the proposed system, it is needed to develop a power saving control system for the linear drive system. In this paper, an integrated control system to minimize required electric power to drive a trolley chassis with the suppressed swaying motion of a hanged container, is proposed. The validity of the proposed control system is investigated by the simulation using Simulink.
Design and Analysis of a Power Control and Monitoring System for Buoy

This paper describes a study for the buoy which should be operated by a stand-alone power system. The field of this study is related to a power system operated by two batteries which depends on the load power. The fluctuation of the voltages makes the life cycle of the battery shorten. The control algorithm has been proposed for reducing the voltage pulsation of the battery by operation strategy according to using purpose such as main or sub power supply system. The power system with battery is separated two parts and this has been proved through a simulation and a sea experiment. In order for the experiment to use a wireless monitoring system has been installed in buoy. This paper shows an excellent test result of wireless monitoring system for buoy.
