Thermal conductivity characteristics of commercial heat exchange fluids applying diamond nano-powder

Nanofluids, suspending nano-particles of various materials, have a good heat transfer characteristics compared with pure base fluids. For the reason, nanofluids have been considered as one of the measure to improve energy efficiency, and studied to apply on a working fluid of a high performance heat exchanger. This study tested thermal conductivities of nanofluids applying diamond nano-powder on DI water, ethylene glycol, and ethyl alcohol. Nanofluids are fabricated by matrix synthetic method, and the volume percent of diamond nano-powder contained in the base fluid are 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 1vol%. As a result, thermal conductivities are enhanced with applying diamond nano-power. Especially, the conductivity is highly increased up to 23% at 1vol% nanofluid applying diamond nano-powder on DI water.
An analysis on the characteristics of superheater organization of ORC system for marine waste heat recovery system(WHRS)

This research designed Waste Heat Recovery System(WHRS) generation system of 250kW whose working fluid is R-245fa and studied on cycle characteristics by superheater organization. It simulated two conditions; series connection and parallel connection between superheater and evaporator. In simulation of series connection of superheater and evaporator, output of 4.7% could be improved because of the increase of enthalpy by overheating of working fluid. When setting 250kW for target output, cycle flux could be reduced by 4.1%. When setting 250kW as a target output of cycle In parallel connection simulation of superheater and evaporator, cycle flux was reduced as flux of heat source fluid for superheater was increased. So, the maximum 7.9% of working fluid pump's electric power was reduced and there was no big change in cycle efficiency and net efficiency by flux ratio.
The effect of exit opening rate on exhaust gas pressure, temperature, and engine performance

Multiple devices have been installed to reduce exhaust emissions and to increase thermal efficiency. Those devices reduce the exhaust pipe opening area and increase the exhaust gas pressure. The pressure increase disturbs a gas flow and has a bad effect on the engine performance. However there is some study that NOx can be reduced with exhaust gas pressure increase. In this study an engine performance is tested with various opening ratios. The result shows that the fuel consumption rate is reduced in case of little amount of the pressure increase, and NOx is reduced with the pressure increase, while the concentration of the toxic exhaust gases are increased in the case of high back-pressure.
A study on power improvement emission characteristics of marine diesel engine with response power 200HP turbocharger

To improve efficiency of diesel engine which requests high output recently and is used all kinds of industrial areas, this thesis experimented dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas characteristics of diesel engine installed by supercharger of correspondent output 200HP and natural inhalation diesel engine through the dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer in same condition. As the result of experiment with natural inhalation diesel engine and diesel engine installed by supercharger, there were a few differences of output, but dynamic characteristics at high speed showed increased output and efficiency of the engine installed by supercharger. On the contrary, in exhaust gas characteristics, the model installed by supercharger showed increased exhaust gas such as
, etc, but added value of exhaust gas is low if considering
reduction and efficiency of dynamic characteristic's increase. Based on the results, diesel engine installed by supercharger is expected to show higher economic feasibility than natural inhalation diesel than natural inhalation engine from an angle of efficiency. The evaluation of performance and flow characteristics due to the length of throat and diffuser for ship's ejector

Ejector is a simple device which can transport a low-pressure secondary flow by using a high-pressure primary flow. The efficiency of the ejector system is relatively very low, compared to other fluid transport devices driven mainly by the forces acting on the normal direction. However, its major advantage is a simple structure with no moving parts, and it transports a large amount of fluid with a small driving energy. In this study, the performance of side-type liquid ejector commonly used in ships; is analyzed by using experimental and CFD methods under steady and incompressible flow condition by varying the length of the throat and diffuser, the flow pattern and suction phenomenon were studied in detail.

In this study, 2 degree of freedom PID controller is added to the conventional feed-forward controller for the purpose of improving its limitations such as set-point of tracking performance and disturbance suppression performance in the conventional PID controller. And the controller parameters optimization as a Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) is used. Simulation and experiments verify the performance of the controller.

These Xenon flashlamp power supply for Ultra Violet has converter with high voltage conversion ratio. General model is composed of transformer with high voltage conversion ratio and voltage doubler rectifier circuit. Purpose of power supply leads dielectric breakdown of Xenon flashlamp and passes current rapidly. When passing current, it has to limit current to avoid over-heat, damage of electrode and acceleration of gas oxidation which are cause of performance degradation of lamps. Generally, inductors and resistors, which are called as "Ballast," are used to limit currents. Generally, Transformer has high turn ratio to make high voltages. But we can get high voltages using the transformer with low turn ratio which is driven with self resonance. Also, an advantage of self resonance is to make a circuit simply through impedance of transformer in resonance frequency which filters output voltage. As using an unique impedance of transformer, the circuit does not need other impedance elements like the ballast. So the power supply assures high efficiency of the arc discharge.
A development of video-complex remote monitoring system for offshore plant

An offshore plant needs costly maintenance and has difficulty coping with various accidents coming from the exposure to the environmental threats such as typhoons, tidal waves and etc., in addition to the artificial ones such as fire, collision of ships and etc. In this paper, we develop the video-complex remote monitoring system for an offshore plant, using AtoN AIS and multi-stage database to monitor an offshore plant and solve those problems. The system handles real time video cameras to collect and monitor images on an offshore plant. So, users can be exactly and quickly aware of the information on various situations with the monitoring application based on ENC.
A study on the THD reduction of single phase 2 level inverter for grid connection for ship

There are 440V and 220V electric source in ship. A 440V source is used to drive the power system such as crane and winch on deck and pump in engine room, and a 220V source is used to drive the power source for residential zones, control devices in engine room. In this paper, we made single phase inverter system for grid connection with 220V source for ship, and analyzed THD(Total harmonic distortion) by variation of parameters of L-C low pass filter and deadtime of inverter switching.
A study on basic characteristics of transmission lines employing various periodic strip structures on silicon substrate for a miniaturization of RF components

In this work, we studied basic characteristics of transmission lines employing various PSS (periodic strip structure) on silicon substrate for application to a miniaturization of RF components. According to the results, the transmission lines employing various PSS showed wavelength shorter than conventional coplanar waveguide due to their strong wave characteristics. Especially, with-contact structure was most effective for a miniaturization of RF component. Concretely, the size of the transmission line employing with-contact was only 4.39 % of the conventional coplanar waveguide, According to the bandwidth extraction result, the bandwidth of the transmission lines employing various PSS structures were wider than 384 GHz. Above results indicate that the transmission lines employing various PSS can be effectively used for application to a broadband and miniature RF component, and especially, with-contact is most effective for a miniaturization of RF components.
A study on the receiving rate of the data of the hybrid communication system using data transfer methods for controller system of navigational aids

The Mu-communication board supported by hybrid communication is designed with Cortex M3, which is a low power energy consumption 32-bit microcontroller. The Cortex M3 microcontroller has UART(Universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter) ports which can set appropriately using the command line interpreter (CLI) program with each port. URAT ports are used for hybrid communication modems, GPS modules, etc. When the socket type was compared with the short message service type, the socket type was proven to be better. By improving the receiving performance in the control and management system of the AtoN, data loss was minimized. During the testing of the socket and SMS, data was collected from each buoy for 12 hours every 1 minute and the receiving rate of the data was found to be more than 98.58 % and 99.42 % respectively.

In the field of shipbuilding and marine, electrical power system is that each of the distributed bus bars is connected electrically. In this way, it would be appropriate to recognize as grid-connecting rather than the redundant bus. Short-circuit capacity of the electric power system will be increased proportionally which is due to the addition of the bus. The increase of short-circuit capacity needs high initial cost associated with equipment and can generate the blackout when the equipment with a physically connected to the bus occurs the electric failure. In order to solve these problems, marine electrical power system in which current limiting reactor has been applied is classified according to the network topology, bus network, star network and ring network. And short circuit analysis for each network is performed by the fault types. The results are presented pros and cons compared to each other.
An indoor localization approach using RSSI and LQI based on IEEE 802.15.4

Recently, Fingerprint approach using RSSI based on WLAN has been many studied in order to construct low-cost indoor localization systems. Because this technique is relatively evaluated non-precise positioning technique compared with the positioning of Ultra-Wide-Band(UWB), the performance of the Fingerprint based on WLAN should be continuously improved to implement various indoor location. Therefore, this paper presents a Fingerprint approach which can improve the performance of localization by using RSSI and LQI contained IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The advantages of these techniques are that the characteristics of each location is created more clearly by utilizing RSSI and LQI and Fingerprint technique is improved by using the modified Euclidean distance method. The experimental results which are applied in NLOS indoor environment with various obstacles show that the accuracy of localization is improved to 22% compared to conventional Fingerprint.
An experimental study on the fireproof performance of fire damper according to change of the insulation conditions on the exposed side and unexposed side of the coaming

In this paper, Fire resistance test was carried out in accordance with the change of the insulation conditions on the exposed side and unexposed side of the coaming to obtain optimal insulation conditions for class H-120 insulation in connection with specimen-1 of the preceding paper for the evaluation of fireproof performance for fire dampers according to hydrocarbon fire conditions. As a test result, specimen-2(88 mm,
) was satisfied class H-120 insulation, but specimen-3(76 mm,
) was exceeded thermal insulation acceptance criteria at 110 minutes, therefor, specimen-2(88 mm) is optimal insulation conditions as possible lightweight than specimen-1. Test result comparison, we concluded that temperature rising of the coaming insulation surface was influenced by conductive heat from the bulkhead, and coaming surface was influenced by radiant heat from blade & coaming.
