Numerical analysis for heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of

In numbers of kinds of heat exchanger, the shell-tube heat exchanger is the most commonly used type of heat exchanger in the industry field. In order to improve the thermal performance of the heat exchanger, this study was analyzed heat transfer characteristics according to arrangement of baffle and direction of baffle and bump phase of baffle about shell-tube heat exchanger using appropriate SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model for flow separation and boundary layer analysis. As the boundary condition for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, the inlet temperature of shell side was constantly 344 K and the variation of the water flow rate was 6, 12, 18 and 24 l/min. As the result of analysis, zigzag baffle arrangement enhances heat transfer rate and pressure drop. Furthermore, in the direction of the baffle, heat transfer rate is more improved with vertical type and angle
type than existing type, and pressure drop was little difference. Also, the bump shape of baffle surface contributes to heat transfer rate and pressure drop improvement due to the increased heat transfer area. Through analysis results, we knew that the increase of the heat transfer was influenced by flow separation, fluid residual time, contact area with the tube, flow rate, swirl and so on.
Analysis on condensation heat transfer and pressure drop to develop design program for plate heat exchangers

The purpose of this study is to get the formulas of condensation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop about the water to develop design program for plate type heat exchangers. The single phase flow of cold side was calculated with the correlation of Ko. Condensation heat transfer coefficient model proposed by Annaiev was used and Lockhart model was used to analyze the pressure drop. The calculation algorithm was proposed to calculate heat transfer rate and pressure drop simultaneously. The prediction errors remained within 20% compared to the commercial code in the working range of the plate heat exchangers.
Hazard analysis by fire simulation in an apartment fire

This study predicts damaging risk factors in apartment fire situation by using CFAST. The software was developed by Building and Fire Research Lab, that is government affiliated organization of the National Institute of Standards Technology. This analysis scenarios werec well verified by experimental results. Situation of the living room and the second room as well as the bedroom tends to be qualitatively the same with the experimental data. In case of apartment fire, it is predicted that they have been got into trouble with dizziness, badly vomiting and paralysis symptoms due to short oxygen and excessive carbon dioxide when persons were left out in the living room or second room.
A study on lightweight design for wind turbine rotor shaft

In this study, we discussed the weight reducing of 2 MW class of wind turbine rotor shaft by optimizing design method. The optimal design was applied to obtain get an optimized structure and parameters for the base structure using FEA and DOE. The results were verified by comparing the maximum von Mises stresses and maximum volume in the case of the existing design with those in the case of the optimized design. It was shown that the weight of a base structure can be reduced by about 23 %.
Study on the estimation of uncertainty for the air-borne noise measurements in a naval ship

The measurement of air-borne noise in a naval ship is a crucial element. Because the noise in a naval ship interferes with a communication between crews and finally it causes to reduce the combat power. Thus, most of newly built ships have to satisfy the criteria of air-borne noise in the stage of delivery of a naval ship. In order to evaluate success or failure of criteria, uncertainty of the measurement should be considered. This study introduces the test method for the measurement of the air-borne noise in a naval ship and is concerned with the evaluation of uncertainty. The uncertainty results which was from the measurement of air-borne noise in 7 naval ships newly built satisfy the error tolerance(2dB). Therefore, it is need to reduce the error tolerance for the reliable measurement result.
A study on the electric power recovery in generator load test

Lots of electric power has been wasted through the load bank usually in the container boxes during the generator load test of the ship and offshore plant in the new ship building. Therefore in this research, the quantity of wasted electric power through generator load test under construction was investigated on big shipbuilding yard and quantity of electric power that can be recovered is analyzed when produced electric power during the generator load test is connected to KEPCO Grid, according to laboratory's experiment result where recovers electric power produced from small generator connected to KEPCO Grid.
Evaluation of the corrosion property on the welded zone of forged steel piston crown with types of filler metals

Since the oil price has been significantly jumped for recent some years, the diesel engine of the merchant ship has been mainly used the heavy oil of low quality. Thus, it has been often exposed to severely corrosive environment more and more because temperature of the exhaust gas in a combustion chamber is getting higher and higher with increasing of using the heavy oil of low quality. As a result, wear and corrosion of most parts surrounded with combustion chamber is more serious compared to the other parts of the engine. Therefore, an optimum weldment for these parts is very important to prolong their lifetime in a economical point of view. In this study, four types of filler metals such as Inconel 625, 718, 1.25Cr-0.5Mo and 0.5Mo were welded with SMAW and GTAW methods in the forged steel which would be generally used with piston crown material. And the corrosion properties of weld metal, heat affected zone and base metal were investigated using electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and impedance etc. in 35% H2SO4 solution. The weld metal and base metal exhibited the best and worst corrosion resistance in all cases of filler metals. In particular, the weld metal welded with filler metals of Inconel 718 revealed the best corrosion resistance among the filler metals, and Inconel 625 followed the Inconel 718. Hardness relatively indicated higher value in the weld metal compared to the base metal. Furthermore, Inconel 625 and 718 indicated higher values of hardness compared to 1.25cr-0.5Mo and 0,5Mo filler metals in the weld metal.
Effect of air inflow on the performance of a 50kW-class cross-flow turbine

Small hydropower has been considered as a solution to resolve the problem of exhaustion of fossil fuel and industrial pollution. In this study, we developed and tested a Cross-Flow Turbine with two guide vanes to optimize the small hydropower for the site condition with large fluctuation of head and flow rate. Furthermore, in the condition of constant inlet head, CFD analysis was carried out to analyze the effect of air suction and valve position on the performance characteristics. The results showed that the air suction can minimize the hydraulic loss caused by the Recirculation flow in the runner passage and flow impact on main shaft so that it can increase the turbine efficiency and output power.
Synchronization of the pehlivan chaos system using GA-based sliding mode control

This paper investigates the problem of synchronization of the Pehlivan chaotic system based on sliding mode control and GA. For this, a brief overview of the Pehlivan chaotic system is given. Then, the conventional sliding mode control technique is described and a synchronization method using GA strategy is proposed. The proposed method is that the GA searched the parameters including sliding plane and control gains) selected by the designer in the sliding mode control are searched optimally through the GA. The GA in the MATLAB Toolbox was used and simulation work is shown to illustrate the effectiveness of the synchronization schemes for the chaotic system.
A study on the street security light management system using Zigbee network

This paper relates to the study about the street security light management system. The purpose of the wireless remote management system is to manage street security lights efficiently. The system is composed of three components like light controller, CDMA gateway and web based remote management server. The zigbee solution is adopted to make local wireless network between street security lights. The CDMA network is used for the wireless communication between street security light controller and the remote control center. The gateway to interconnect zigbee network and CDMA was designed with low power 32 bits Cortex M3 micro-controller. For the data communication between the management server and the gateway, SMS and socket based TCP streaming is used. The management server sends SMS to the gateway to deliver light control and management requests, and the gateway replies with the light controllers report via TCP streaming. By using both SMS and TCP streaming communication, it was verified that simple cost effective management is possible for street security lights. We tried real test for 95 street security lights in real environment during two months and analyzed the practical possibility for mass supply.
Service analysis and propagation measurement for DGPS land-based reference station in Korea

Based on the radio wave propagation measurement of DGPS land-based reference stations, the DGPS service coverage and signal quality in the receiving points are analyzed in this paper. The DGPS signal strength and SNR in the receiving point are measured in the winter and summer season, respectively. In case of DGPS reference station that can not provide the designed service coverage, the solution to improve the service coverage is presented in this paper. Almost all DGPS reference station except reference station with low ground conductivity or mountainous terrain provide the DGPS service coverages of 80% or more of the designed service area. The service coverages of DGPS reference stations can be improved to pre-designed service area in case of installation management of DGPS site on the plain terrain and good ground conductivity. It is necessary to get the high efficiency of transmitting antenna to improve the service area.
Word sense disambiguation using dynamic sized context and distance weighting

Most researches on word sense disambiguation have used static sized context regardless of sentence patterns. This paper proposes to use dynamic sized context considering sentence patterns and distance between words for word sense disambiguation. We evaluated our system 12 words in 32,735sentences with Sejong POS and sense tagged corpus, and dynamic sized context showed 92.2% average accuracy for predicates, which is better than accuracy of static sized context.
Performance evaluation of LTE/LTE-A closed subscriber group femto-cell discovery

In LTE (Long Term Evolution)/LTE-A (Long Term Evolution-Advanced) networks, hierarchical macro/femto-cell structure is adopted to enhance system capacity. Such a femto-cell is deployed as a Closed Subscriber Group (CSG) eNB. However, the inbound handover to CSG cell experiences longer delay than normal handover because it spends more time detecting the associated CSG cells due to its sparse deployment. Most of all the legacy UEs (User Equipments) have been implemented without considering the inbound CSG handover. Accordingly, they may not meet the performance requirements on the cell discovery described in the LTE/LTE-A standards. Therefore, in this paper, the performance of the CSG femto-cell detection is evaluated using computer simulation. The evaluation results will provide a basis to tackle the latency problem of inbound CSG handover.
A development of facility management system providing alarm function for fault effect and replacement of each component

In this paper, we develop a facility management system which provides fault effect and replacement alarm function of each component for supporting effective maintenance of facility. To do this, we use weighting method to each component, calculate importance of each component, and make them to hierarchy structure using bill of materials of facility. Also, we draw fault cause and fault effect of components based on failure modes effects and criticality analysis, and define criteria of severity, occurrence and detection to get risk priority number. To apply these concepts, we develop and test the facility management system to verify its practicality. In the future, we expect the developed system to apply many domains such as maintenance of ship and offshore plant.
Interworking architecture between Smart-TV and Smart-phone using NFC and QR technology

We propose an interworking architecture between a smart TV and a smart phone. This architecture provides control mechanism for the newly adopted App on Smart-TV with smart phone. The general method connecting between a smart phone and a mobile AP is very carefully complex and troublesome procedure. The mobile AP transfers data from a smart phone to a smart TV after getting the connection. Connecting procedure between a smart phone and a mobile AP is therefore necessary operation. We worked out the new procedure and control method that acquires some information from Near Field Communication or Quick Reference codes for connecting between a smart TV and a smart phone. Our proposed architecture was confirmed practical possibility as user-oriented automatic connection and simple manipulation for control a kiosk or various display equipment.
Unified app architecture for plug and play of smart phone accessary

Recently, smart phones are spread out as a universal mobile terminal equipment. Its provide USB interface to connect with various devices. Smart phones may be replaced with high priced monitoring equipments because of portability and mobility as its merit. In addition to that, the various sensor devices detecting surrounding environment of the radioactivity, sodium or electromagnetic waves have been announced. But the plug and play methods of sensor devices have some problem to connect smart phone with USB accessory device. We propose an integrated methodology that can connect smart phone with USB sensor devices and also, we realized USB accessory plug and play with one App that can collect measurement data through various sensor devices.
A fundamental study about maritime training for marine engineer using PBL(Problem Based Learning)

PBL is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of problem solving. Marine engineer is the expert which supports the safe navigation and solves the problems could happen in independent situation as a ship. This study executed the fundamental study on the maritime training education for marine engineers using PBL. In this study, we conducted the survey on 56 students for 6 months using PBL in H university. The result showed the improvement on ability to solve the problems, interpersonal relationship, communication skill, synthetic thinking faculty and practical use of data but some students answered the complaint of the insufficient information and unacquainted learning method of PBL. This suggested the development and improvement plans for the maritime training education using PBL based on this fundamental study.
A study on the method of adoption of Korean law for the electro-technical officer

IMO adopted comprehensive revisions to the International Convention and Code on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) at diplomatic conference in Manila, Philippine in June 2010. In Korea, the legal amendment of Korean Marine Officers Act has been proposed to apply revised STCW convention to The Korean Law. The Korean Marine Officers Enforcement Ordinance Act currently working on follow-up and this legislation was passed in Legislation and Judiciary Committee. This thesis would like to look into the current status of how to apply the Electro-Technical Officers standard and license system from the Korean Marine Officers Act to be revised. Also, This study aims to effectively improve for Korean Marine Officers Enforcement Ordinance of Electro-Technical Officers system and to provide the policy proposal.
Koreans' consciousness survey on the onboard safety of domestic passenger ship

Users of passenger ships and cruise ships are rapidly increasing year by year, and the needs of the floating architecture are newly come out. But the studies about the passengers' safety and the countermeasures against incidents on board the ships are rare, although the ships' incidents are occurred averagely 15 cases per year during last 10 years. For the purposes of the analysis of the safety consciousness and gathering the some of input data for evacuation simulation for Korean passengers on board ships, this study performed surveys targeting ordinary 394 passengers who are not specially trained and/or accustomed with onboard living conditions. The results are the followings. The reliability on ships' safety is surveyed as 32.3%. Only 14.6% of respondents are aware that there were safety education on board ship during sailing. And 42.2% and 40.9% of respondents answered that they saw the map of emergency routes and knew where the life boats are, respectively. And 73.3% select crews' direct or in-direct(like announcement by indoor broadcasting system) guidances as the most effective evacuation method.
Basic performance analysis of ocean thermal energy conversion using the refrigerant mixture R32/R152a

In this paper, performance characteristics of cycles were studied when mixed working fluid was used for ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). Among the various mixed refrigerants for industrial heat-pump, R32/R152a used in ocean thermal energy conversion system. For simulations, R32/R152a were used in existing closed cycle and Kalina cycle which is used only ammonia and water as mixed refrigerant. Temperature of the warm heat source was 26 and 29 celsius degree, temperature of the cold heat source was 5 celsius degree. In results of simulation, Gross power of the closed cycle on R32 was 22kW, and efficiency of the cycle was 2.02%. When the mixed refrigerant of R32/R152a, in the ratio of 90 to 10, gross power of the closed cycle was 29.93kW, and efficiency of the cycle was 2.78%. Gross power and cycle efficiency of R32/R152a increased by 36% and 37% than those of existing single refrigerant. Additionally, the same simulations were conducted in Kalina cycle with the same various composition ratio of mixed refrigerant.
Wide parametric study on the aerodynamic force of a rigid-body model for sailing yacht

In the design of sailing yachts, the analysis of aerodynamic forces exerted on sails is very important to predict the performance of propulsion of a ship. To understand the essential flow physics around the sail, a simplified rigid-body sail model is proposed in this study. Four parameters such as free stream velocity, angle of attack, maximum width of sail, and camber length are considered as the independent variables. Lift and drag coefficients are computed with CFD technique using ANSYS-CFX, and the results with the visualization of flow field are analyzed in the viewpoint of fluid dynamics.
