Fundamental study on development of latent heat storage material for waste heat recovery of biomass gasification

Recently, latent heat thermal energy storage system (LHTES) has gained attention in order to utilize middle temperature (373~573 K) waste heat from biomass gasification. This paper has investigated thermo-physical properties of erythritol [
], mannitol [
] and their compounds as phase change materials (PCMs). The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was applied to measure the melting point and latent heat of these PCMs. Also the melting and solidification characteristics of these PCMs were observed in a glass tube with a digital camera. In the DSC measurement, when the amount of mannitol content was more than 40 mass%, the melting point of these compounds show two melting points. The experimental results showed that the velocity of melting and solidification were different for every mixture ratio of compounds. These compounds had the super-cooling phenomenon during the solidification process.
Performance comparison of 10kW scale horizontal axis tidal turbines

Horizontal axis tidal turbines are machinery inherited from the principle of wind turbines to enable the application of utilizing ocean's current energy. Its function does not differ from that of wind case, which is to convert fluid's kinetics energy to mechanical torque, therefore generates electricity. Since the ocean has been an enormous source of untapped power, tidal turbines have been being investigated recently to meet human's demand of energy with respect to environment friendly approach. This paper introduces a couple of turbine designs which are anticipated to have high performance. A comparison among recent works on the same topic is also made for validation.
Level control of single water tank systems using Fuzzy-PID technique

In this study, for the control of a single water tank system, a fuzzy-PID controller design technique based on a fuzzy model is investigated. For this purpose, a water tank system is linearized as a number of submodels depending on the operating point, and a fuzzy model is obtained by fuzzy combining. Each submodel is approximated as a first order time delay model, and a PID controller is designed using several existing tuning techniques. Then, through the fuzzy combination of this controller using the same method as that of the fuzzy model, a fuzzy-PID controller is designed. For the proposed technique, a simulation is performed using the fuzzy model of a water tank system, and the validity is examined by comparing its performance with that of a PID controller.
Extended pivot-based approach for bilingual lexicon extraction

This paper describes the extended pivot-based approach for bilingual lexicon extraction. The basic features of the approach can be described as follows: First, the approach builds context vectors between a source (or target) language and a pivot language like English, respectively. This is the same as the standard pivot-based approach which is useful for extracting bilingual lexicons between low-resource languages such as Korean-French. Second, unlike the standard pivot-based approach, the approach looks for similar context vectors in a source language. This is helpful to extract translation candidates for polysemous words as well as lets the translations be more confident. Third, the approach extracts translation candidates from target context vectors through the similarity between source and target context vectors. Based on these features, this paper describes the extended pivot-based approach and does various experiments in a language pair, Korean-French (KR-FR). We have observed that the approach is useful for extracting the most proper translation candidate as well as for a low-resource language pair.
Self-positioning fusion system based on estimation of relative coordinates

Recently, indoor navigation has been applied in large convention centers by using wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which provide not only a user's path to be traveled but also orientation and shopping information to increase user's convenience. This paper presents the localization system for estimating relative coordinates without pre-deployment of the reference node based on ultra wide band (UWB) ranging system, which is relatively suitable for indoor localization compared to other wireless communications, and azimuth sensor. The proposed localization system which consists of an azimuth sensor and a mobile node composed of three nodes estimates relative coordinates of the reference node without applying any recursive and time consumption algorithms. Also, in the process of estimating relative coordinates of the reference node, ranging errors are minimized through the proposed technique and the number of nodes can be reduced. Experimental results show the feasibility and validity of the proposed system.
Electric power system design and analysis for FLNG vessel

The electrical reliability of the power generation and distribution system of Floating Liquefied Natural Gas vessels has been analyzed according to the operating modes using Electrical Transient Analysis Program in this paper. Electricity is used for the topside processes, cargo pumps for off-loading, thrusters for heading control and marine equipment. It is very important to improve the safety, efficiency, and stability of the electrical power system for successful operation. The voltage variation of the high and the low voltage bus shall be within the primitive limitation range at normal operation loads both in steady state and in the transient state. The power system was simulated and compared with class rule for design verification.
Boiling CHF phenomena in water and FC-72

Extensive researches toward pool boiling characteristics have been widely investigated. However, the correct understanding of its boiling crisis by Critical Heat Flux (CHF) phenomenon during steady and transient heat transfer as a fundamental database for designing heat generation systems is still need to be clarified. The pool boiling CHFs were investigated to clarify the generalized phenomena of transition to film boiling at transient condition. The CHFs were measured on 1.0 mm diameter horizontal cylinder of platinum for exponential heat generation rates with various periods for saturated liquids at atmospheric pressure. The incipience of boiling processes was completely different depending on pre-pressurization. Also, the dependence of pre-pressure in transient CHFs changed due to the wettability of boiling liquids. The trend of typical CHFs were clearly divided into the first, second and third groups for long, short and intermediate periods, respectively. By the effect of pre-pressurization, the boiling incipience mechanism was replaced from that by active cavities entraining vapor to that by the HSN in originally flooded cavies.
Recent advances in natural gas hydrate carriers for gas transportation - A review and conceptual design

Natural gas hydrate (NGH) is emerging as a new eco-friendly source of energy to replace fossil fuels in the 21st century. It is well known that the Natural Gas Hydrate contains large amount of natural gas about 170 times as much as its volume and it is easy to be stored and transported safely at about
under atmospheric pressure due to so called "self-preservation effect". The option of gas transport by gas hydrate pellets carrier has been investigated and developed in various industry and academy. The natural gas hydrate pellet carrier is on major link in a potential gas hydrate process chain, starting with the extraction of natural gas from the reservoir, followed by the production of hydrate pellets and the transportation to an onshore terminal for further processing or marketing. In recent years, Korean project team supported by Korean Government has been working on the development of NGH total systems including novel NGH carrier since 2011. In order to increase the knowledge on the NGH pellet carrier developed and to understand the major hazards that could have significant impact on the safety of the vessel, this paper presents and evaluates the pros and cons of cargo holds, loading and unloading systems through the analysis of current patent technology. Based on the proven and well-known technologies as well as potential measures to mitigate sintering and minimize mechanical stress on the hydrate pellet in the self-preservation state, this study presents the conceptual and basic design for NGH carrier.
