A Study on the Performance Comparison of Energy Saving Devices for Handy-size Bulk Carrier

The environmental regulations for CO2 emissions from the ship have been established recently, and fuel oil price has been increased continuously. In order to overcome these circumstances, Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) have been developed continuously to reduce the fuel oil consumption and improve the propulsive efficiency. This paper describes the trial performance of PBCF (Propeller Boss Cap Fins), SCHNEEKLUTH duct, Asymmetric rudder bulb and Mewis duct applied to handy-size bulk carriers. As a result, SCHNEEKLUTH duct is more effective than other energy saving devices at the reducing the fuel oil consumption and the improvement of the propulsive efficiency. In addition, it is confirmed that SCHNEEKLUTH duct is really effective in the vibration of the deck house. And the fuel oil consumption can also be reduced through main engine de-rating.
Selection of Factors for Performance Optimization on Non-esterified Bio-diesel Fuel Using Fractional Factorial Design

Non-esterified bio-diesel fuel saves cost by no esterified process and its performance was more similar to diesel oil than esterified bio-diesel fuel when the fuel blended 95% diesel oil and 5% it was used on diesel engine with electronic control system. A performance optimization is necessary for application of non-esterified bio-diesel fuel blended with diesel oil 95% on the latest diesel engine. In this study, test using fractional factorial design was accomplished at 25% and 50% partial load in order to evaluate influence of controllable 6 factors on responses such as specific fuel consumption, nitrogen oxides and coefficiency of variation of indicated mean effective pressure as basic experiment for performance optimization of this fuel. It is cleared that the injection timing and common rail pressure of 6 factors are mainly effective and its effect level is different according to load.

As the recent regulation of Internaional Maritime Organization (IMO) is enforced, the advanced technology of Ballast water treatment system (BWTS) is needed to meet its requirements. Until now, there are two kinds of the BWTS technologies such as physical methods (Membrane and UV) and chemical methods (Chlorin and Ozone). However, these conventional methods have some limitations of auxiliary power, low productivity, residual treatment and etc. In order to overcome these problems, this paper introduces the new kind of BWTS based on mechanical principle and investigates the effect of rotating disc shapes on flow characteristics between rotating and stationary discs by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Planar and Step types can make the local cavitation generated along radius, and Circular type can increase the intensity of shear stress.
A Study on Characteristic Analysis of Shaft Electromotive Force in SAEYUDAL

Electromotive forces (EMF) are generated by electrical equipment and engine shafting with a number of reasons. The shaft and bearing which is insulated by lubricating oil acts as a condenser, being able to store this EMFs. The electromotive force on the hull and shaft, with very few exceptions, has anode voltage on it. Electrical spark of the anode voltage on the shaft may lead to corrosion. Hence, in order to prevent ship's shaft and propeller corrosion, shaft grounding system are installed and operated. The shaft EMF voltage measurement methods was measured using 24bit 2 channels A/D converter of NI company and Labview software. 1 channel was propeller shaft's voltage and the other was M/E engine rpm gauge. In this paper, the generated electromotive force was analyzed and modeled with result of the analysis. As a result, the main shaft's electromotive force was in direct proportion to the main engine's revolution. However, over the specific R.P.M., it was reduced gradually. In addition, higher electromotive force on the shaft was identified during engine's ahead direction than the astern direction. The generated electromotive force is only minor compared to the shaft grounding system.
A Study on Translational Motion Control in Integrated Control System for Ship Steering Motion

In general, a series of ship steering motion is represented by the combination of translational motion and rotational motion of the ship. Especially, special-functioned ships such as large-scale cruises, ships for installing underwater optical cable, and diver ships must be able to reveal only a translational motion without the change of orientation. In this paper, a method to comprise an integrated control system based on the joystick as a command instrument for translational motion control is suggested. In order to realize the translational motion control system, several algorithms are suggested including the velocity command generation, the selection of motional variables, and the generation and tracking of reference inputs for the selected motional variables. A simulation bench is composed to execute simulations for several translational motion commands. At last, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by analyzing the simulation results.
Study on Equivalent Circuit and Bandwidth of Short Wavelength Thin-film Transmission Line Employing ML/CPW composite structure for Miniaturization of wireless Communication System on RFIC

In this paper, we study the RF characteristics of the short wavelength thin-film transmission line employing microstrip line (ML)/coplanar waveguide (CPW) composite structure on silicon substrate for application to RFIC (radio frequency integrated circuit). The thin-film transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure showed a wavelength shorter than conventional transmission lines. Concretely, at 10 GHz, the wavelength of the transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure was 6.26 mm, which was 60.5 % of the conventional coplanar waveguide. We also extracted the bandwidth characteristic of the transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure using equivalent circuit analysis. The S parameter of the equivalent circuit showed a good agreement with measured result. According to the bandwidth extraction result, the cut-off frequency of thin-film transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure was 377 GHz. Above results indicate that the transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure can be effectively used for application to broadband and compact RFIC.
A Study on RF Characteristics of Transmission Line Employing Inverted Periodically Arrayed Capacitive Devices for Application to Highly Miniaturized Wireless Communication system on MMIC

In this paper, we studies on the RF characteristics of the transmission line employing IPACD (inverted periodically arrayed capacitive devices) on MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuit) for application to wireless communication system. According to measured results, the novel transmission line employing IPACD showed a wavelength much shorter than conventional transmission lines. In addition, the IPACD structure showed an effective permittivity much higher than conventional ones. We also extracted the bandwidth characteristic of the IPACD structure using equivalent circuit analysis. According to the results, the cut-off frequency of the proposed structure was 129.2 GHz.
Automatic Classification of Blog Posts using Various Term Weighting

Most blog sites provide predefined classes based on contents or topics, but few bloggers choose classes for their posts because of its cumbersome manual process. This paper proposes an automatic blog post classification method that variously combines term frequency, document frequency and class frequency from each classes to find appropriate weighting scheme. In experiment, combination of term frequency, category term frequency and inversed (excepted category's) document frequency shows 77.02% classification precisions.
Performance Investigation of Visible Light Communication Using Super Bright White LED and Fresnel Lens

White light-emitting diode (WLED) is growing interest in using both illumination and communications. This paper reports visible light communication (VLC) composed of a super bright white light-emitting diode, low cost commercial photo-diode and a Fresnel lens. LED driver is consisted of the power MOSFET and MOSFET driver that switches the LED on and off. The modulation bandwidth of the LED used was determined to be 8 MHz. However, it was possible to communicate up to 1 Mbps under illumination of 500 lx because of the weak signal power and a low spectral sensitivity of the SHF213 as a PIN photodiode. In order to enhance the system bandwidth, the LED light was focused on the PIN photodiode by use of the Fresnel lens. As a result of that, visible light link was operated up to modulation bandwidth of the LED. The signal to noise ratio can be improved by 40 dB using an optical concentration at the receiver.
Efficiency Improvement of Switched Reluctance Generator According to Current Shape in the High Speed Region

This paper describes about the efficiency improvement of switched reluctance generator (SRG) over the rated speed region. Since the current shape has a great influence on the loss of the machine, so the system efficiency can be improved by optimizing the current shape. In case the wide speed range application such as wind power and medium size hydraulic power generation, a method of switching angle control is suggested to obtain the wanted current shapes. In order to verify the method, the experimental platform is set up. The feasibility of the theory is verified by simulation and experimental results.
A Study of Multi-channel AFS for Marine Traffic Facilities

After some period of time, the marine traffic facilities find problems caused by shellfish adhered to inside and inlet of the water column. Therefore, single-channel AFS(Anti-Fouling System) has been applied in order to minimize the deposition of shellfish. However, imbalance phenomenon of ionization of copper electrodes that are used for single-channel AFS appeared. This problem resulted in frequent replacement of anode. In this paper, multi-channel current control system has been developed, as well as the related hardware has been designed and fabricated. Further, experimental study has been undertaken to compare the application of single and multi- channel AFS. Through the sea experiments, it was possible to confirm that the copper electrode used for multi-channel AFS is uniformly ionized.
The Changes of Short Circuit Current Density according to the Post-annealing Temperature of Organic Materials in the Hybrid Photovoltaics

The organic/inorganic hybrid photovoltaic devices have been studied using Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) : [6, 6]-Phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and GaN. We traced the effect of short circuit current density with different annealing method under the various concentration and ratio of P3HT:PCBM. During the pre-annealing course, the heat treatments were performed each time at low temperature after the organic layer coated and the samples were heated at high temperature through one or two steps under the post-annealing process. It revealed that the samples with post-annealing process had higher values of short circuit current density than the other samples upon pre-annealing. And the interesting high short circuit current density features were observed at 1:1 mixing ratio and 1wt% of P3HT:PCBM.
A Development of Simulation System based on Scenario for Evaluation of e-Navigation MSP

Recently, the development of Maritime Service Portfolios (MSPs) for the safe navigation of ship has been discussed internationally. For the successful service of the MSPs, first of all, studies for the standardization about the structure and data structure of MSPs should be preceded. Also, it is necessary to evaluate and assess whether the services are effective for safe navigation, and provided data and portrayal methods are proper. However, because great dangers will be accompanied when untested MSPs about their effectiveness and safety are applied in real ship navigation, it is necessary that effectiveness and safety of the MSPs should be proven under various navigational conditions and environments by simulation. In this paper, we propose a 3D navigation simulation system using desktop PC environment, which is proper for evaluating the effectiveness of MSPs. The system consists of three modules which are simulation scenario editor, 3D visualization of navigational environment and 2D navigational equipment. The scenario editor module provides an environment setting for simulation, such as properties, routes and positions of vessels and aids to navigations. It also provides functions to create a scenario for the simulation to operate. Additionally, the 3D visualization module provides 3D navigational environment which shows interplay between geographical and navigational environment based on the created scenario. The 2D navigational equipment module provides visualization functions of various navigational equipment, shows the interaction between ship's navigational equipment and ship's environment. The simulation scenario, in which various kinds of ships are routing in the port, is created by the developed simulation system, and experimented whether this developed system is appropriate to evaluate and assess the MSPs developed by the International Maritime Organization.
A study on implementation of background subtraction algorithm using LMS algorithm and performance comparative analysis

Recently, with the rapid advancement in information and computer vision technology, a CCTV system using object recognition and tracking has been studied in a variety of fields. However, it is difficult to recognize a precise object outdoors due to varying pixel values by moving background elements such as shadows, lighting change, and moving elements of the scene. In order to adapt the background outdoors, this paper presents to analyze a variety of background models and proposed background update algorithms based on the weight factor. The experimental results show that the accuracy of object detection is maintained, and the number of misrecognized objects are reduced compared to previous study by using the proposed algorithm.
Development of inflatable life raft for small vessel

Life rafts, which has been used for domestic vessel currently, are fabricated mostly for the ocean-going vessels in accordance with the SOLAS Resolution. Therefore, there is not any small-sized life raft which can be installed on small fishery boat, leisure boat and cargo vessel with those length shorter than 20 meters in our country. However, in many foreign countries, new standards or the small-sized life rafts applicable to those small vessel have been developed according to the standard of ISO 9650. Furthermore, they make their effort to contribute the safety for the life at sea by supply the superior product of life rafts, which have been adopted by light material (i.e. thermoplastic polyurethane, TPU) and economic production process (i.e. heat sealing, radio-frequency welding, RFW), etc. In this paper, the development results of the small-sized life raft, which has been used the lightening material TPU and fabricated by RF-welding method, will be introduced.
Comparative Study on Predictions of Passengers' Evacuation Performances Before and After the Remodelling of MV SEWOL

Even though the passengers' safety has priority on Passenger ship, there is no criterion on the evacuation performance related with human behavior. To uncover the potential problems of domestic criteria on safety of passenger ships, this study performed simulation ad analysis the evacuees safety before and after the Sewol's remodelling. It is clear that the assembly stations of both before and after Sewol remodelling have sufficient areas to satisfy the domestic criterion by simply human- body's-area, but those are failed to assemble all the passengers by the simulation tool that reflects the human behaviors' characteristics. For the healing angle as 0 degree, and the criteria of SOLAS, it was found out that all the passengers can safely evacuate from each cabins to the embarkation stations for both of the before-and-after the Sewol remodelling. But for the healing angle as 20 degree, both of the before-and-after Sewol remodelling are evaluated as possible to make all the passengers evacuate for day scenario and impossible for night scenario of SOLAS criteria. And because of the worse conditions after the remodelling, the probabilities of Sewol(before) are showed wide band comparing to Naminoue (after).
