Kim, So-Youn ; Baek, Seung-Hee ; Kim, Dong-Cheol ;
The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 15, issue 4, 2002, Pages 1~16
This work examines the effect of treatment with Gyukhachukeotang on the growth of uterine myomal cells. Comparisons of cell growth, MAP kinase activity and expression of bcl-2 (apoptosis-related gene) were made between the control and experimental samples. The results as fallows; 1. Any concentration of Gyukhachukeotang above 0.01% yielded growth inhibition. Concentrations of 5% and 10% stopped all cell growth, demonstrating the effectiveness of Gyukhachukeotang as a growth inhibitor on uterine myomal cells. 2. The MAP kinase activity in uterine myomal cells treated with Gyukhachukeotang was decreased to a high degree at the concentration of 10%, and some inhibition of activity was detected at a concentration of 5%. 3. The expression of bcl-2, a Cell Apoptosis-related gene, in uterine myoma cells treated with Gyukhachukeotang was gradually increased with increasing concentration of Gyukhachukeotang. These results indicate the ability of Gyukhachukeotang to control uterine myomal cell growth, with concurrent reduction of MAP kinase activity. Treatment with Gyukhachukeotang appears to trigger a normal apoptosis response, as indicated by increased bcl-2 expression. This observed increase in apoptosis indicates that Gyukhachukeotang is an appropriate prescription to treat uterine myomal cells.

Objective : This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the hormones and cytokines associated with bone metabolism in ovariectomized rats. Method : Twenty-four Female-Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into sham operated(normal) group, ovariectomized(control)group, ovariectomized and treated with extract Caraganae Sinicae Radix(treated) group. Each group was investigated the changes of body weight at 3,5,7weeks after treatment, and femur weight, femur/body weight, thickness of compact bone of body of femur, area of cancellous bone of distal epiphysis of femur, serum estrogen, serum calcitonin, serum parathormone, serum Tumor Necrosis
at 7weeks after treatment. The results were summerized as follows; 1. The treated group showed significant change in body weight compared with the control group at 5,7weeks after treatment. 2. The treated group revealed significant increases in femur/body weight compared with the control group. 3. The treated group showed a little thicker compact bone of body of femur than the control group. 4. The area of cancellous bone of distal epiphysis of femur in treated group was increased significantly compared with control group. 5. The level of serum estrogen showed no change compared with control group. 6. The level of serum calcitonin showed no change compared with control group. 7. The level of serum parathormone was decreased in treated group significantly compared with control group. 8. The level of serum
was decreased in treated group significantly compared with control group. 9. The level of serum
showed no change compared with control group. The results indicate that Caraganae Sinicae Radix inhibits bones resorption in ovariectomized rats by it's lowering effects on serum parathormone and

Onsinhwan(OSH : 溫腎丸) is used in female infertility, especially due to lack of kidney yang or Sinyanghe(腎陽虛). An attempt was made to evaluate the influences of OSH on the serum concentrations of FSH and LH, Estrogen, Progesterone and the histological and optical changes of ovary, ovary weight of rats. The results of the study were as follows : 1. Blood FSH level increased in experimental group as compared with control group on 7th day and 14th day, which showed no efficacy. 2. Blood LH level decreased in experimental group as compared with control group on 14th day, which showed no efficacy. 3. Blood Estrogen level increased in experimental group as compared with control group on 7th day and 14th day, which showed no efficacy. 4. Blood Progesterone level decreased in experimental group as compared with control group on 7th day and 14th day, which showed no efficacy. 5. In histological observations of ovary, ovulation increased in experimental group as compared control group on 7th and on 14th day, which showed no efficacy. 6. In optically observations of ovary, size and weight of ovary increased in experimental group on 7th day and on 14th day, which showed no efficacy. According to these results, OSH did not influence on the ovulation of ovary in rats.

Mouse calvarial osteoblast cells were isolated and cultured. To examine whether the cells produce active gelatinases in culture medium or not,the cells were analyzed using by zymograsphic analysis on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). We show that mouse calvarial osteoblasts in culture constitutively synthesize progelatinase- A. Then, mouse osteoblasts, which were stimulated by PTH,
, mononuclear cell conditioned medium (MCM) and IL-1 as bone resorption agent's, showed increased collagenolysis by producing the active gelatinase. However, treatment of indomethacin and dexamethasone significantly decreased those effects of collagenolysis in mouse osteoblastic cells. On the other hand, IL-1 in stimulating bone resorption was examined using fetal mouse long bone organ culture. IL-1 stimulated bone resorption and produced marked resorption when present simultaneously. Furthermore, when it was examined the effects of indomethacin and dexamethasone on the dose dependent responses of
, indomethacin and dexametasone produced a rightward shift in the IL-1 dose response curve. The results of in vitro cytotoxicities showed that Taeyoungjon-Jahage water extracts(T.Y.J-J.H.G extracts) have no any cytotoxicities in concentrations of
and furthermore there is no any cytotoxicity even in concentration of
on mouse calvarial bone cells. T.Y.J.-J.H.G. extracts had protective activity against PTH (2 units/mI), or MCM (5%, v/v), or

(10 ng/ml) ,
collagenolysis in the mouse calvarial cells. Pretreatment of the T.Y.J.-J.H.G.extracts for 1 h, which by itself had little effect on cell survival, did not enhance the collagenolysis, nor significantly reduced the collagenolysis by pretreatment. Furthermore. the medicinal extracts were shown to have the protective effects against collagenolysis induced by
. Pretreatment of the extracts for 1 h significantly reduced the collagenolysis. Interestingly, the T.Y.J.-J.H.G. extracts were shown to have the inhibiting effects against gelatinase enzyme and processing activity induced by the bone resortion agents of PTH,
, with strong protective effect in pretreatment with the extracts. T.Y.J.-J.H.G. extracts were shown to have the inhibiting effects against
bone resorption and the effect of the pretreatment with a various concentrations of the medicinal extracts were significant. The inhibition extent and phenomena of IL-1 stimulated bone resorption by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents of indomethacin and dexamethasone were similar to those obtained by T.Y.J.-J.H.G. extracts treatment in the mouse calvarial tissue culture system. These results indicated that the T.Y.J.-J.H.G.-water extracts are highly stable and applicable to clinical uses in osteoporosis.

. Pretreatment of the T.Y.J.-J.H.G. extracts for 1 h did not enhance the plasminogen dependent fibrinolysis. Finally, calcitonin showed the inhibitory activity the
bone resorption in the mouse calvarial bone cells having both of the osteoblast and osteoclast cells. Seemingly, pretreatment of the T.Y.J.-J.H.G. extracts for 1 h reduced the bone resorption. These results clearly indicated that calcitonin and T.Y.J.-J.H.G. extracts play key roles in inhibition of the osteoclast-mediated bone resorption.

Buin-daejeon-yangbang is one of the special book on the traditional eastern medicine(T.E.M) Ob&Gy in Song dynasty. It remains very important book of the department of the Ob&Gy in today's T.E.M. There are a good deal of the useful theories and prescriptions about clinical Ob&Gy in it. Chen-zi-ming(陳子明) was a very famous Ob&Gy doctor and professor on T.E.M who came from Lincuan Jingxi(江西 臨川) province China in the South-Song dynasty. He was born in AD 1190, was died in AD 1270. Buin-daejeon-yangbang was written by him in AD 1237 and remained several kinds of edition now. It takes form total 8 volumes, 24 chapters. There are more than 260 medical references and 1500 prescriptions in it. And the formation of the book which the arrangement of theories and prescriptions is to keep in order. But it has some unreasonable and superstitious contents too. It performed as a bridge which link the results of pre-Song dynasty about clinical T.E.M Ob&Gy and after-Song dynasty about that. So it is a grandfather of a book for about clinical T.E.M Ob&Gy as following books like Gyoju-Buin-daejeon-yangbang, Yeougwa-Jeungchi-Junsung and Jeieum-Gangmock.

Objectives : Every year tens of treatises have been published on the journal of oriental gynecology. But until now there were no papers on the analysis of those treatises and no efforts to evaluate them. Method : To analyze the treatises of journal of oriental gynecology, we examined 19 journals published from 1987 to 2001. There were no rules to analyze treatises, we followed the way of Seo, classifying treatises into bibliographic, experimental and clinical categories. Results and conclusions : 1. Until 1994 most of treatises were bibliographic but from 1995 experimental treatises were increased. 2. Many(29.5%) of them were studied about the diseases in pregnancy, Many(25.4%) of experimental treatises were reserched about the diseases on leukorrhea. 3. In the clinical treatises most of them were case reports. 4. In the bibliographic treatises 90% of them were studied about the classic contents categories. 5. In the clinical treatises the way of treatment showed about same percentage between single herb medication and acupuncture-herb medication complex.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 15, issue 4, 2002, Pages 136~148
This study was performed to investigate the relation between Iridological constitution and Gynecological disease. Iris is one of the most complicated part of our bodies. It reflects perfectly organ's status, toxic accumulation, person's characteristics and healing effects. Many signs of Iridology were closely researched to examine the relation between Iridology and disease. After studying these matters, we could find that lacuna and auto-nerve wreath are intimately related. Especially the portions of auto-nerve wreath loss are accorded with the organ's present illness. Most of patients have scurf ring and vessel congestion sign. Large Intestine's structure also shows us the meaningful result that ballooned is the most common, spasticity and stricture are next. Connective tissue weakness constitution is 39.22%, complex 35.29% and blood-originated 25.49%. According to the three-step constitution by the Genetic facter, average type is 52.94%, weak type 35.29% and strong type 11.76%. Above these results, we can reach a conclusion that Iridological constitution are intimately related with Gynecological disease. And further study are requested to get a objectivity in a Gynecological diagnose. Iridology is a bright prospective study and interesting diagnostic method. If we deeply investigate this science, before long we can have a great outcome and more objective diagnostic skill.

The fetus is greatly influenced by mother's health condition and her environment. So in our traditional society, the prenatal care is regarded as important for generations to birth of sound baby in mind and boy. Purpose : We aimed to reserch what kind of mother's conditions can be more influential to infant allergic disease among traditional prenatal care. Method : We investigated 91 patients who answered by a questionnaire at Dept. of Pediatrics, Oriental Hospital of Dae-jeon University. We divided patients into two groups, A(normal group;43) and B(allergic disease group;48) and analyzed those. Results : The pregnant women in the group B, generally have worse health conditions and are under the stress mentally and cannot get enough nutrition because of morning sickness and digestive trouble, but take more pungent and powdered food than the group A. Specially, the result is significant in anger and worry among other mental stresses and in digestive trouble and threatened abortion among other health conditions(according to order: p<0.001, p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001). We can see that pregnant woman's peaceful mentality and enough nutrition intake are most important to birth of sound baby in mind and also we can see that pregnant woman's regimen has influence on not only infant disease but also character and the infant allergic diseases are related to inheritable factor.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 15, issue 4, 2002, Pages 208~217
We had treated one melasma patient occurred by pregnancy with oriental medicine's method and got a good result. Melasma is often occured in pregnancy and dysmenorrhea. Most common pathology of melasma in oriental medicine is Yin deficiency with Fire and Blood Stasis. The Fire and Blood Stasis are made by Qi stagnation which is occurred by depression and stress. So we used the methods of promoting Qi and Blood, increasing Yin with clearing heat, and the result is very successful. We found out that Oriental Gynecologic therapy is most appropriate for treating woman's melasma, and could provide the treatment model.

Seo, Ji-Young ; Kim, Yoon-Sang ; Lim, Eun-Mee ;
The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 15, issue 4, 2002, Pages 218~227
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease(PID) is a spectrum of inflammatory disorders of the female genital tract involving at least the endrometrium and may include the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and pelvic cavity. Women with PID acutely experience pain and are at risk for sepsis; however, the long-term complications such as chronic pelvic pain, organic changes like chronic salpingitis, adhesions, etc., and the significant increases in ectopic pregnancy and infertility are more important and hard to control. This study is about one patient who has chronic PID with inflammatory pelvic mass. The patient was treated with retention enema therapy which use herbs effective for reducing inflammation, resolution abdominal mass, promoting blood circulation. Also, treated with herbal medication of Danchisoyosan(丹梔逍遙散) and Moxibution at Zhongwan(中脘), Guanyuan(關元). After total treatment for three months, the patient's symptoms are improved and the size of inflammatory pelvic mass is reduced. This results indicates that the combination treatment, especially the retention enema therapy is effective on reducing symptoms of PID and the size of secondary inflammatory organic changes.

days, After the treatment, numerical index for the pain was obviously reduced in both primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Numerical index reduced
(MVRS) in primary dysmenorrhea, and
(MVRS) in secondary dysmenorrhea and there is no difference in effect between primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. But prescribed period was not correration with treatment effects and Pain-reduced period. Conclusion Hyunburikyungtang-gagam has good efficacy on primary and secondary dysmenorrhea, but some more studies are needed on the relationship between treatment effects and Pain-reduced period.
A case of enlarged uterine myoma on postmenopausal women those who taking H.R.T
Lee, Tae-Kyun ; Kim, Dong-Il ;
The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 15, issue 4, 2002, Pages 238~246
Recently we observed and treated a 49-year-old postmenopausal female with enlarged uterine myoma who taking through the hormone replacement therapy(H.R.T). We regard the cause of this case as insufficiency of kidney-yin(腎陰虛), stagnation or the phlegm and pathologic blood(痰瘀阻滯) and H.R.T. ln general cases, myomas grow in size if estrogen and progesterone is present and do not increase in size if estrogen and progesterone levels are low. So if a woman can get to menopause without having symptoms from the myomas, then it is likely that she will never have problems from the growths that require treatment. But Taking postmenopausal estrogen and progestin replacement therapy can cause myomas to grow. So we recommended her to stop the H.R.T. gave herbal-medicine and acupuncture therapy. Thus we could get a good result as follows. The uterine myomas were significantly declined but no change on it's characters. Hot flush and general conditions were also significantly improved And body weight was lessened for about 4.7kg. But vaginal dryness was appeared, So we planed another therapy for that symptom.
