The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 16, issue 1, 2003, Pages 18~18
Purpose : This study was designed to examine the inhibitory effect of Doinseunggi-tang on the growth of human uterine myomal cells. Methods : Human uterine myomal cells were collected from a consented of a 39-aged-female patient with myoma of uterus. The cells were induced to grow by being cultured in a Dulbecco's modified eagle medium (DMEM) culture solution containing 10
fetal bovine serum (FBS). For the direct inhibitory effects of Doinseunggi-tang, the uterine myomal cells or monolayered formed uterine myomal cells were cultured in the DMEM medium containing different concentration of Doinseunggi-tang. Afterwards, We executed the analysis of the effect of Doinseunggi-tang on cell growth inhibition using molecular biological method through MAP kinase activity and a expression of bcl-2 in uterine myomal cells. Results : The growth of the human uterine myomal cells were increased in a culture solution containing with FBS whereas cell growth inhibition was observed in cell cultures treated with Doinseunggi-tang. MAP kinase activity in uterine myomal cells cultured with Doinseunggi-tang appeared to decrease in a concentration proportional fashion. The expression of bcl-2 for Doinseunggi-tang appeared to increase in a concentration proportional fashion in human uterine myomal cells. Conclusion : Doinseunggi-tang took effects on the inhibition of human uterine myomal cells growth, decreased the MAP kinase activity, and increased the expression of bcl-2. These results showed that Doinseunggi-tang contributes to the chemical inhibitor and treatment of human uterine myoma.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 16, issue 1, 2003, Pages 118~118
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of Gami-tonggyung-tang (GMTGT) on anti thrombotic, antiinflamm-atory and analgesic action. The results were as follows. GMTGT inhibited platelet aggregation induced by collagen significantly as compared with the control group and pulmonary embolism induced by collagen and epinephrine significantly as compared with the control group. GMTGT increased number of platelet significantly and decreased PT and shortened APTT significantly as compared with the control group in thrombus model induced by dextran. GMTGT just increased number of platelet significantly as compared with the control group in thrombus model induced by hydrocortisone acetate. GMTGT decreased the amount of IL-
and IL-6 significantly as compared with the control group. GMTGT showed analgesic action significantly as compared with the control group on the writhing syndrome induced by acetic acid. These results suggest that GMTGT can be used treating a lot of women diseases caused by the inflammation, blood aggregation and bad blood circulation.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 16, issue 1, 2003, Pages 136~136
Objective : This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Cuscutae Semen(토사자) on the reproductive competence in male mice. Materials and Methods : We administered the decoction of Cuscutae Semen to 8-week-old and 18-week-old male mice once a day for 8 days. And we observed the count, the motility and the morphology of epididymal sperm from the male mice and the result of in vitro fertilization and embryonic development of oocytes. We examined the pregnancy rate and the delivery rate from the mice. Results : It was effective to be treated with Cuscutae Semen on the increase of the count and the motility of epididymal sperm in 8-week old mice but not effective on the change of the morphology of that. It was effective to be treated with Cuscutae Semen on the increase of the motility of epididymal sperm in 18-week old mice but not effective on the increase of the count and the change of the morphology of that. There was no signigicant effectiveness in the rate of in vitro fertilization and embryonic development of oocytes of the Cuscutae Semen treated group and that of control group in 8-week and 18-week old mice. There was no signigicant effectiveness in the rate of pergnancy and delivery of in vitro cultured blastocyst from mice of the Cuscutae Semen treated group and that of control group in 8-week and 18-week old mice. Conclusion : This study shows that Cuscutae Semen has no significant effects on the morphology of epididymal sperm from the male mice and in vitro fertilization and embryonic development of oocytes but has significant effects on the count and motility. We can suggest that Cuscutae Semen has an effect on the improvement of reproductive competence in mail mice.
Effect of Buthanol and Methanol Extracts from Euonymus Alatus on Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 in cervical epithelial carcinoma cells
Kim, Cheorl-Ho ;
The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 16, issue 1, 2003, Pages 143~143
The risk for cervical cancer is related to sexual intercourse. One factor associated with tumor invasion and metastases is the production of matrix metalloproteinases, which degrade the extracellular matrix. The ability of human semen to influence inhibition for matrix metalloproteinase associated with cervical cancer, MMP-9, was examined. The plant Euonymus alatus (Euonymus alata) is often included as an ingredient in various herbal remedies recommended for cancer theraphies in Korea. Various extracts prepared from stems of Euonymus alatus were tested for cytotoxic activity on the human cervical carcinoma cell line HeLa S3 cells using the XTT assay method. Also, the extracts were investigated the inhibitory effects on matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 activity using gelatin zymography. The methanol extract (
of 〉80 g/ml), hexane (
of 〉80 g/ml) and ethyl acetate (
of 〉80 g/ml) fraction exhibited weak cytotoxic activity. However, butanol (
of 〉55 g/ml) and chlor-oroform (
of 〉75 g/ml) fraction exhibited strongly cytotoxic activity. Gelatin zymography showed that the HeLa S3 cells secreted matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), probably including MMP-9, which may be involved in cervical tumor cell invasion and metastasis. The butanol fraction showed stronger inhibitory effect of proteolytic activity than other fractions. Also, the butanol extract was able to decrease the proteolytic activity of MMP-9 in a concentration-dependent manner on zymography. This result suggests that the butanol fraction from Euonymus alatus has highly inhibitory effect on MMP-9 in comparatively low cytotoxicity.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 16, issue 1, 2003, Pages 151~151
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of Bogi-Haehun-Tang (BHT) on immune response and anemia. In the immunologic experiments, the administration of BHT (500 mg/kg, p.o.) for 7 days increased the cell viability of murine thymocytes, but decreased the cell viability of splenocytes. In vitro system, BHT increased the cell viability of thymocytes, but decreased the cell viability of splenocytes at the concentration of
. The administration of BHT enhanced the population of
cells. Also, BHT increased the population of
cells and the population of
cells in splenocytes. In addition, BHT increased the secretion of
-interferon. BHT increased the production of nitric oxide and phagocytic activity in peritoneal macrophages. In the anemic experiments, BHT recovered the level of RBC, hematocrit and hemoglobin decreaed by phenylhydrazine at 10 days. These results suggest that BHT increase an Immune response via activation of Th1 cells and macrophages and recover an anemia induced by phenylhydrazine.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 16, issue 1, 2003, Pages 164~164
Uterine leiomyoma are the most common gynecologic neoplasm in women. They can be found in 20
of reproductive age women. The most common presenting symptom associated with fibroids is menorrhagia, chronic pelvic pain, and infertility. Western medicinal treatment options for uterine leiomyoma is well established, such as hysterectomy, myomectomy, and/or the use of GnRH agonists. But in eastern medicine, we can not find the name of uterine leiomyoma. Nevertheless there is similar conceptional 징가, which is a sort of pelvic mass. It is currently try to treat uterine leiomyoma in eastern medicine. So it was reviewed how to approach uterine leiomyoma of concept, symptom, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in eastern medicine.

Purpose : Oriental medical doctor used to treat the uterus benign tumer by differentiation of symptoms and signs. In other words, we could think that those patients may be showed the concerning symptoms. I have carried out this study to know how many symptoms they have. Methods : I have carried out this study from May 2001 to September 2002, for eighty one patients who were diagnosed as uterus myoma, ovarian cyst, endometriotic cyst, adenomyosis and visited Dong-Eui university korean medical center. They wrote out the OB&GY questionaires of Dong- Eui university korean medical center. Then I managed the outcome of questionaires and compared it with the benign tumer related symptoms statistically Results : As a result, many patients have coldness. In many case, coldness accompany with other symptoms such as indigestion, phlegm(痰), emotional stress(七情), some deficiency(虛症). Conclusion : Since there aren't the enough subjects of this study, I can make a significant conclusion in coldness only. In the future, I want to get better results by studing for a good many patients. And I want oriental medical doctor to treat the uterus benign tumer by objective symptom signs in the basis of my study.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 16, issue 1, 2003, Pages 186~186
Chronic Cervicitis is a disease causing leukorrhea, which we can frequently find in gynecological clinic. It is often reoccurring in spite of antibiotic treatment. When it is severe, it can be the cause of infertility, hetero-epithelioma, cervical cancer etc. Chronic Cervicitis can also be caused by the sequela of gonorrheal infect. However its main cause is infection with staphylococcus and streptococcus in injured cervical tissue. The erosion by damage from obstetrical treatment or inherited deficit can make cervical mucous gland exposed to the germ easily and finally it can cause Cervicitis. Therefore, In order to cure the Cervitis and protect the re-occurrence from inflammation, there should be accompanied with the treatment for cervical erosion as well as the one for the inflammation. The treatment for cervical erosion relies on the treatment for Cervicitis, which removes the origin and protects the re-occurrence of Cervicitis. However even in the case of cervical erosion without any pathological infection, cervical mucous gland can be exposed to the bacteria and it always implies the possibility to be developed as Cervicitis. So the fundamental treatment for erosion should be made imperatively. In Western Medical World, there are several treating methods for cervical erosion, using anti-biotic, cryo-therapy, electro-cautery, conization, laser beam irradiation etc. But the anti-biotic treatment is just for inflammation not for cervical erosion. Its surgical treatment can cause any side effect after treatment like bleeding from surface of cut, destruction of cervical mucous gland, cervical stenosis, jnfertility etc. It is very important to cure the cervical erosion to intercept the origin and chronic re-occurrence of cervical Cervicitis. However, the treatment for cervical erosion has limited effect and limitation due to limit of anti-biotic treatment and the side effect of surgical operation. We are reporting our experimental treatment, which we have treated a patient of cervical erosion accompanied with chronic Cervicitis, using cervical-acupuncture and gobakban-spread at Gynecology dept. in Dongguk Univ. Gangnam Oriental Hospital.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 16, issue 1, 2003, Pages 205~205
Purpose : In postpartum period, women are liable to vanous diseases. Postpartum apoplexy is mainly caused by the weakness of 'ki-hyul' and it belongs under the classification of postpartum disease. The main causation of it is different from general cerebral infarction though symptoms are similar to the general one. The important point in treating its patient is that the patient is in the postpartum period. I suggest that treating with this point will bring a efficacious result. Methods : The patient in this case, 21 years-old female was in Daejeon University oriental medical hospital for 29days(5th/Jan/2002 - 2th/Feb/2002). Her chief complaints when she was admitted in the hospital were general body weakness, vomiting, nausea, and headache. Dysarthria, tremor and weakness of left. limbs, and voiding sense dysfunction occurred while she was in the hospital. These symptoms were caused by cerebral infarction. After giving her the therapies with herb medicine, moxa, and negative, her symptoms got almost disappeared and her condition got better. And she got discharged with self walking. Results & Conclusion : The oriental medical treatment cerebral infarction have showed its excellent efficacy through many experiments and theses. Its clinical practices are actively taken as well. Not many postpartum apoplexy patients have been in clinical practices yet. But, the superior efficacy will follows the active effort.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 16, issue 1, 2003, Pages 224~224
We researched one patient of Bartholin's gland cyst clinically who was hospitalized in Dongseo Oriental Hospital from 2002.4.9 to 2002.5.6. Bartholin's gland cyst is a common disease of the vulva. This desease corresponds to vaginal diseases including erosion of vulva, vulva swelling in oriental medicine. The cause of this case is sinking due to ganulsangbi(肝鬱傷脾). In medical therapy, it was suggested that gamiguibitang(加味歸脾湯加味方) was effective. In acupuncture therapy, ganjungkyuk(肝正格), mokhyuI(木穴), mokbuhyuI(木婦穴) Were used and BU(態膽+紅花) were also effective for Bartholin's gland cyst.
