Effect of Kamiinsamyangyoungtang on Immune Response and Blood Formationin
Park, Kyung-Mi ; Yoo, Dong-Youl ;
The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 17, issue 4, 2004, Pages 1~1
Purpose : The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of Kamiinsamyangyoungtang (KIT) on the immune response and blood formation in C57 BL/6 mice.Method : we study effect of the administration of Kamiinsamyangyoungtang water extract(KIT) on the cell viability of Concanavalin A treated-thymocytes and lipopolysaccharide treated-splenocytes in C57BL/6 mice. Also we study effect of KIT on the subpopulation of murine thymocytes and murine splenocytes, the production of -Interferon, interleukin-4 and nterleukin-2 in murine splenocytes and on the change of RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit in anemic rats induced by phenylhydrazine
HClResult : KIT decreased the cell viability of thymocytes in vivo and in vitro system, but did not affect the cell viability of splenocytes. Also, KIT did not affect the population of helper T (Th) cells and cytotoxic T (Tc) cells in thymocytes, but decreased the population of B-lymphocytes and the population of Th cells in splenocytes. In addition, KIT decreased the production of
-interferon, but did not affect the production of interleukin-2 and interleukin-4 in splenocytes. KIT increased the production of nitric oxide in vivo and in vitro system. Furthermore, KIT enhanced the phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages in vivo, but decreased the phagocytic activity in vitro system. KIT partly recovered the number of RBC, the volume of hemoglobin and the value of hemacrit decreased by phenylhydrazine at 10 days. Conclusion : These results suggest that KIT inhibits the specific immune response via decrease of the viability of thymocytes and the population of B-lymphocytes in splenocytes and stimulates the non-specific immunity via enhancement of phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages and recover the level of RBC and hemoglobin.

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 17, issue 4, 2004, Pages 46~46
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of Chokyungjongoktang water extract(CJT) on immune system by immobilization stress in C57BL/6J mice. CJT decreased the serum level of histamine and corticosterone increased by immobilization stress. In addition, CJT did not affect the viability of thymocytes and enhanced the viability of splenocytes decreased by immobilization. Also, CJT increased the viability of thymocytes and decreased the viability of splenocytes in vitro. CJT did not affect DNA fragmentation of thymocytes and splenocytes increased by immobilization stress. CJT increased the population of thymic CD4
cells increased by immobolization stress, and decreased the population of Thy1
cells increased by immobilization stress and increased the population of splenic CD8
cells increased by immobilization stress. CJT enhenced the production of -interferon and IL-2 decreased by immobilization stress. Also, CJT decreased the phagocytic activity decreased by immobilization stress and decreased the level of nitric oxide decreased by immobilization stress. These results indicate that CJT may be useful for the prevention and treatment of stress via suppression of serum histamine and corticosterone level, and enhancement of viability of splenocytes and cytokines production from Th1 cells in splenocytes.

Albizzia julibrissin have long been used for clinical therapy associated especially with menopausal symptoms in Korea. To provide a scientific rationale for such use, we have investigated the antioxidant and vasorelaxant effects of Albizzia julibrissin. Antioxidant activity was measured using the
-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and superoxide anion radical scavenging methods. The water extracts of Albizzia julibrissin (AJ-Ex) produced a dose-dependent radical scavenging activity against DPPH and superoxide anion radical. The vasorelaxant effects of Albizzia julibrissin and its possible mechanism of action were investigated on the vasomotor tone of the rat thoracic aorta rings in an organ bath. The extracts produced a dose-dependent transient relaxation in the endothelium-intact rat aorta precontracted with norepinephrine (NE). This relaxant effect was significantly attenuated by removal of the endothelium and also by treatment with such nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor L-NNA (10
M). Neither a prostacycline synthase inhibitor, indomethacin (10
M), nor a muscarinic receptor antagonist, atropine (10
M), altered the AJ-Ex induced endothelium-dependent relaxation. In conclusion, these antioxidant and vasorelaxant effects of the extracts may contribute to the beneficial effects in postmenopausal women.

To address the ability of Shi-Ho-So-Gan-San-Ga-Mi-Bang(SHSGSGMB) to induce cell death, we investigated the effect of SHSGSGMB on cell viability. Twenty-four hours later, loss of viability occurred following SHSGSGMB exposure in a dose dependent manner. The treatment of SHSGSGMB, a commonly used herb formulation in Korea, Japan and China, Decreased cell viability. Our immunoblotting data show that PARP, a well known caspase-3 and -6 substrate, is cleaved by SHSGSGMB. We show that a pro-apoptotic protein, Bax is increaed in the presence of SHSGSGMB but that the amount of BC1-XL is not changed. Bag-1 was originally identified as a binding partner of anti-apoptotic factor Bcl-2. We have shown SHSGSGMB-induced down-regulation of Bag-1 levels in HeLa cells. Our results show that, SHSGSGMB induces mitochondria membrane potential collapse. We suggest that Bax, a critical protein which can regulate channel of mitochondria to release cytochrome c and Bag-1, of which exogenous was reported to confer cells resistance to several stresses, may be key proteins in SHSGSGMB- induced apoptosis of HeLa human cervical carcinoma cells

The Journal of Oriental Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 17, issue 4, 2004, Pages 166~166
Objectives : Osteoporosis is the lose of bone mass due to the malabsorption of calcium into the bone. Bone fragility results in increased risk of bone fracture in many parts of the body, including the hips, spinal vertebrae, and ribs. Social and economic impact of osteoporosis is growing. Prevention deserves more attention than at present. One of the best ways to get adequate vitamin
is moderate exposure to the sun. The present study investigates whether UV-B can increase the level of calcium and vitamin
in serum. Methods : In total, 50 postmenopausal women were included in this study. The first group, 25 patients were irradiated with UV-B alone, 12 times over a period of 2 weeks. The second group, 25 patients were irradiated with UV-B, 12 times over a period of 2 weeks and a daily allowance of 1,500 mg calcium. The serum concentrations of calcium, T-cholesterol and Vitamin
were measured 2 days before the first, and after the last, dose of radiation. Statistical significance (P<0.01) was determined using the Wisconsin Signed Ranks test. Results : After 2 week therapy the significant increase of the vitamin
and calcium levels of all groups were obvious and the significant decrease of total cholesterol of all groups was obvious. No noteworthy side effects from treatment were observed. Conclusion : The results demonstrated the necessity of UV-B radiation, in case of the prevention of osteoporosis caused by Calcium or Vitamin D deficiency.

Purpose : The postmenopose symptoms can be related to a mental and physical disorder. So there are many Hwa-byeong signs in the climacteric period. Hwa- byeong, the syndrome usually found in Korean society, is more frequent to women than to men. The symptom and mechanism of Hwa-byeong are similar to those of menopausal symptoms, so that it is manifested or deepened in the postmenopose and severe case. The important thing in treating its patient is that the patient has Hwa-byeong. I will demonstrate how this point will bring efficacious results. Methods : In this case, the patient, 52 years-old female was in Daejeon University Oriental Medical Hospital for 25 days(14th/Dec/2002-8th/Jan/2003). When she was admitted in hospital, her chief complaints were flushed face with fever, chest discomfort, palpitation, insomnia, headache, carpopedal anaphrodisia, chiropodalgia, back pain, and facial numbness. These were caused by climacteric changes and became worse by mental shock. So, we would like to report that it is effective to cure the climacteric case by giving her the therapies with herb medicine, acupuncture, auriculoacupuncture, moxa, aroma therapy and negative. After that, her symptoms got almost disappeared and her condition was even better. Results & Conclusion : The oriental medical treatments for the climacteric symptoms with Hwa-byeong have showed its excellent effectiveness through many experiments and above the methods. Its clinical practices are actively taken as well. The superior efficacy will follows the active effort.
