The purposes of this study are 1) to develop optimum FRW technique of SNCM220, SCM435, SACM645 and SCM415 bar-to-bar similar friction welding, 2) to develop in-process real-time weld quality nondestructive evaluation technique by acoustic emission method, and 3) to certify of weld quality by inspection of tensile fracture surface on friction welded joints.
Development of Adaptive AE Signal Pattern Recognition Program and Application to Classification of Defects in Metal Contact Regions of Rotating Component

In this study, the artificial defects in rotary compressor are classified using pattern recognition of acoustic emission signal. For this purpose the computer program is developed. The neural network classifier is compared with the statistical classifier such as the linear discriminant function classifier and empirical Bayesian classifier. It is concluded that the former is better. It is possible to acquire the recognition rate of above 99% by neural network classifier.
Intelligence Package Development for UT Signal Pattern Recognition and Application to Classification of Defects in Austenitic Stainless Steel Weld

The research for the classification of the artificial defects in welding parts is performed using the pattern recognition technology of ultrasonic signal. The signal pattern recognition package including the user defined function is developed to perform the digital signal processing, feature extraction, feature selection and classifier selection. The neural network classifier and the statistical classifiers such as the linear discriminant function classifier and the empirical Bayesian classifier are compared and discussed. The pattern recognition technique is applied to the classification of artificial defects such as notchs and a hole. If appropriately learned, the neural network classifier is concluded to be better than the statistical classifiers in the classification of the artificial defects.
A Study on the Bonding Residual Thermal Stress Analysis of Dissimilar Materials Using Boundary Element Method

In general residual stress is measured by X-ray diffraction method but in case of bonding residual thermal stress it is inadequate technique to examine the stress singularity. Therefore Two-dimensional elastic boundary element analyses were carried out to investigate the residual thermal stress and stress singularity of bonding interface in Al/Epoxy. This boundary element results were compared with the strain gauge measurements. The effects of different interface models, sub-element and adherend thickness are presented and discussed. On the basis of the obtained results, interface delamination causing by normal stress is expected and stress singularity is observed more intensively increasing with adherend thickness. It is concluded that the bonding strength of Al/Epoxy interface can be estimated correctly by taking into account the stress singularity at the edge of the interface.
A Study on the Small Punch Test for Fracture Strength Evaluation of CANDU Pressure Tube Embrittled by Hydrogen

The purpose of this study is to investigate the usefulness of small punch(SP) test using miniaturized specimens as a method for fracture strength evaluation of CANDU pressure tube embrittled by hydrogen. According to the test results, the fracture strength evaluation as a function of hydrogen concentration at
was much better than that at room temperature, as the difference of SP fracture energy(Esp) with hydrogen concentration was more significant at
than at room temperature for the hydrogen concentration up to 300ppm-H. It was also observed that the peak of average AE energy, the cumulative average AE energy and the cumulative average AE energy per equivalent fracture, strain increased with the increase of hydrogen concentration. From the results of load-displacement behaviors, Esp behaviors, macro- and micro-SEM fractographs and AE test it has been concluded that the SP test method using miniaturized specimen(
) will be a useful test method to evaluate the fracture strength for CANDU pressure tube embrittled by hydrogen.
A Study on the Gamma Scanning Test Used for Nondestructive Test Radiation Shielding Material

As nuclear industry in Korea is being expended, the number of user for radioisotope and radiation generators has being remarkably increased. As a result, radiation shielding problem for radiation safety has rasied as a question of great interest nowaday. In this report, gamma scanning test (GST), one of the nondestructive test methods of radiation shielding material was introduced and the review of the test method and its application were described. In addition for accurate evaluation of the test result, necessary basic equipments for the test and for improvement of the equipment were suggested. If the effective test method described above were widely and properly applied by GST related companies, the technology would be used effectively, as one of the safe nondestructive test for radiation shielding material in future.
