Real-Time HD Watermarking System in DTV environment

High-quality digital broadcasting contents are susceptible to illegal copy and unauthorized redistribution, which makes broadcasters difficult to protect valuable media assets. So, broadcasters and content providers need the technology for copyright protection of professional digital content. Digital watermarking technology is one of the most actively developed solutions for the copyright protection. This paper suggests the requirements of watermarking technology in DTV(Digital TV) environment for copyright protection and shows the developed real-time watermark embedding/detecting system for HD(High Definition)/SD(Standard Definition) video and experimental results of the system against watermark attack tests. Our watermarking system meets the watermarking requirements of invisibility, robustness and security of DTV environment.
Implementation of MPEG-21 DIA Utility Software for Stereoscopic Video Adaptation

This paper presents recent works of the development of MPEG-21 DIA utility software as one of MPEG-21 activities. The main purpose of this work is to make integrated utility software for DIA C/C++ modules in a Java framework. To do this, JNI plays a role of the interface of a main module with C/C++ DIA adaptation modules. Furthermore, DIA and DID parsers are integrated to the utility software. Our software is designed such that all DIA modules are easily integrated. A variety of adaptation modules have been adopted in MPEG-21 standard. Among them, stereoscopic video conversion that is one of DIA adaptation modules is chosen and we show that our utility software is correctly implemented based on experiments.
A Comparison of PSNR, WSNR and ESNR Evaluation Methods for The Two Value Modulated Images

We have proposed an objective evaluation method using ESNR as the measure of approximation by the visual model, which coincides with MOS, a subjective evaluation method. For two-value images, we have used five kinds of modulation methods: 1) ordered dither, 2) least mean error, 3) pulse density low division, 4) simple two-value, and 5) random dither methods. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the validity of ESNR, by comparing the proposed method together with the existing representative methods such as PSNR and WSNR, with the subjective method MOS. The results of a series of experiments show that the ranking by MOS coincides with ESNR, though does not coincides with PSNR and WSNR.
Adaptive Background Subtraction Algorithm with Auto Brightness Control for Consumer-type Cameras

This paper presents a new auto brighoess control algorithm fur adaptive background subtraction. The algorithm is designed to cope with the problem of auto-brightness adjustment feature of consumer-type cameras. The experimental results show the proposed method improves performance of the classification. This will be beneficial to many computer vision applications in term of reducing the cost of implementation and making them more available to the mass consumer market.
Channel estimation of OFDM System using Matching Pursuit method

In this paper, we propose a mobile channel estimation algorithm using matching pursuit algorithm for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Least square (LS) algorithm, which is used as a conventional channel estimation algorithm for OFDM systems, has error probability of channel estimation affected by effects of noise. By estimating the channel of sparse type, the proposed algorithm reduces effects of noise during time intervals that multi-path signal doesn't exist. The proposed algorithm estimates a mobile receivingchannel using pilot information transmitted consequently. We compare performance of the proposed algorithm with the LS algorithm by measuring symbol error rate with 64QAM under a mobile multi-path fading channel model.
Studies on Synchronization Techniques for Power Saving of DVB-H Terminal

In this paper, we proposed new fast scattered pilot synchronization techniques to reduce the burst synchronization time for the DVB-H receiving system with robustness. DVB-H terminals employ a TDM system called 'Time-Slicing' to reduce power consumption. In order to fully exploit the potential power reduction, the synchronization time for the DVB-H receiver must be very short. A typical DVB-T system uses the TPS Synchronization to determine the position of scattered pilots which are used for channel estimation, and it takes 68 OFDM symbol time. In this paper, several new fast scattered pilot synchronization techniques are proposed.
An asymmetric WDM-EPON structure for the convergence of broadcast and communication

In this paper, an asymmetric WDM-EPON transmission scheme is proposed to be used in a high speed access network system, which is required to implement the convergence of broadcast and communication. WDM is used for downstream transmission from OLT to access nodes, satisfying wide bandwidth requirement for broadcasting and various multimedia services. And an EPON scheme, which is cheaper than WDM, is applied to upstream transmission where less bandwidth is required. A transmission test in physical layer was performed successfully and the results are provided. If ONUs are to be used in a home gateway, its protocol should be appropriate to its traffic pattern. Voice is sensitive to a time delay while data is not. A new dynamic bandwidth assignment protocol for PON system, which can cope with various types of data in access network is proposed and its performance is analysed. A maximum cycle time is specified to achieve the QoS of signals sensitive to time delay. And a minimum window is specified to prevent the downstream control signals from uprising. It is shown by simulation that the proposed EPON protocol can provide a better performance than previous ones.
Study on Event Reporting Service for Digital Contents on the Convergence Network of Broadcasting and Communication

MPEG-21 has identified the need fur Event Reporting in its vision for an interoperable multimedia framework. Event Reporting is required within the MPEG-21 multimedia framework in order to provide a standardized means for sharing information about Events amongst Peers and Users. Such Events relate to Digital Items and/or Peers that interact with them. Arising from an each Event, there is the opportunity to describe what occurred. However, there are a number of difficulties in providing an accurate report about an Event. Different observers of the Event may have vastly different perspectives, needs, and focuses. They may emphasize certain elements to the detriment of others, or they may describe an Event in a way that others may find confusing. In this paper, we design how to express Event Reporting message structure and system architecture in compliance with ISO/IEC 21000-15. And we implement the system for MPEG-21 Event Reporting service.
An XML-based Metadata Engine Design for Effective Retrieval in Video Recording System

In this paper, we propose a design of the metadata engine of the video recording system to minimize the retrieval time. For this purpose, the proposed metadata engine stores the XML metadata as a separated fragment and construct a hierarchical indexing scheme based on the contextual and structural properties of metadata. The hierarchical indexing scheme is consisted of a node index for basic searching and a group index for advanced searching. In this way our approach can minimize the number of indexes and thus the retrieval time. Our simulation results show that the response time of our proposed system is shorter than that of the previous works.
Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater Part 1 : Laboratory Test Results

This paper presents and analyzes laboratory test results of Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater (EDOCR) using ATSC(Advanced Television Systems Committee) terrestrial digital TV broadcasting system. The EDOCR laboratory test, which is done at CRC(Communications Research Centre) Canada, is classified to receiver test, transmitter test, and synchronization test between transmission and reception frequencies. The receiver part includes feedback signal, random noise, single echo, multi-path ensemble, and NTSC/DTV interference test. The transmitter part includes out-of channel emission, quality of transmitting signal, and phase noise test. By the field test results, the receiver part of the EDOCR eliminates average 5.5 dB of feedback or single echo signal in range of 0 to 11
and has average 18.6 dB at TOV(Threshold of Visibility) under random noise environment. Also, the transmitter part of the EDOCR satisfies the specification of US FCC(Federal Communications Commission), and frequency difference between transmitter and receiver is zero.
Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater Part 2 : Field Test Results

This paper presents and analyzes field test results of Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater (EDOCR) using ATSC(Advanced Television Systems Committee) terrestrial digital TV broadcasting system. In the field test, according to EDOCR On/Off, types of antennas and receivers we measured reception possibility, C/N(Carrier to Noise Ratio), reception power, noise and input margin at each test point. By the field test results, the reception rate of the receiver manufactured in 2004 was
when EDOCR is off and directional antenna is used. However, the reception rate was
when EDOCR is on. In addition, the noise margin, which determines reception quality was increased at least 6 dB, so that it is capable of constructing SFN(Single Frequency Network) using the EDOCR.
High-resolution image restoration based on image fusion

This paper proposes an iterative high-resolution image interpolation algorithm using spatially adaptive constraints and regularization functional. The proposed algorithm adapts adaptive constraints according to the direction of..edges in an image, and can restore high-resolution image by optimizing regularization functional at each iteration, which is suitable for edge directional regularization. The proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional adaptive interpolation methods as well as non-adaptive ones, which not only can restore high frequency components, but also effectively reduce undesirable effects such as noise. Finally, in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, various experiments are performed so that the proposed algorithm can provide good results in the sense of subjective and objective views.
