Design and Implementation of the Traffic and Travel Information Service for Terrestrial DMB System

DMB video/audio service was successfully launched. DMB data service is a matter of primary concern now. The TTI(Traffic and Travel Information) service is considered as a killer application of the data service. Tn this paper, we propose a method for design and implementation of the broadcasting system for TTI service. The proposed TTI service system consists of an authoring tool, the DB module, the Transmission module and Monitoring module. This system satisfies the national TTA standards of the Traffic and Travel Information data services for terrestrial DMB; TPEG(Transport Protocol Experts Group) platform. The system was designed to support real-time automatic transmission for CTT and CTT SUM, and non real-time authoring & automatic transmission for POI and SDI, and was focused on the capability to make high-quality contents efficiently and to send them to the data inserter reliably. The performance of the implemented system was proven through the conformance tests with the various commercial receivers. After the continuous upgrade, the system is being used in commercial service.
Development of Conformance Test Tools for Terrestrial DMB Broadcast Web Site Services

In this paper, we presents conformance test tools for the broadcast web site (BWS) service which is one of the data services for terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB). First, the methodology for the conformance test is established for both transmitters and receivers of T-DMB BWS services. The test tools consist of three parts: BWS bitstream analyzer, BWS reference decoder (software) module, and BWS test bitstreams. For testing transmitted BWS bitstreams, we developed the bitstream analyzer. For testing BWS receivers, we developed the reference Ifecoder module and created the test bitstreams. Actually the bitstream analyzer developed in this paper was used for the verification of the test bitstreams. The same test bitstreams are fed to a BWS decoder module under test and the reference decoder module and the results from the two are compared for verification. The test tools can be used for the test of all the protocol and textual/image specifications related to BWS including MOT protocol, HTML, PNG, MNG, JPEG, and Ecma Script.
Verification of the Multi-channel Audio Service over T-DMB

According to the advancement of multimedia compression technologies, high quality multi-media services are easily found in common life. Along with this situation, 5.1-channel audio service also has expanded the application area to home theater system and car theater system and consumer can easily take a chance to experience the feeling of 5.1-channel audio. On the other hand, terrestrial DMB service has been launched in Korea from Dec. 2005 as a handhold multi-media broadcasting service. However, multi-channel audio was not considered due to the insufficiency of bandwidth and the handhold usage. Lately, MPEG is standardizing high efficiency multi-channel audio compression technology for handheld broadcasting service, and several trial for application is introduced in Europe. In this paper, we would like to explain multi-channel audio compression technology, describe the implementation of the verification system for the multi-channel audio service over T-DMB and investigate the possibility of further realization of the service.
Design of T-DMB Automatic Emergency Alert Service Standard : Part 1 Requirements Analysis

This paper presents the requirements analysis for the Terrestrial DMB Automatic Emergency Alert Service (AEAS) Standard. First, the basic concepts in disaster management and the AEAS system structure are presented as a background. Next, other emergency alert systems and the related standards are analyzed. We propose taxonomy to categorize the emergency alert systems and analyze the characteristics of each system. Next, we analyze advantages of T-DMB for the delivery medium of emergency alert message and problems to resolve for the enhanced performance. Finally, we propose service requirements which will achieve general/special-purpose, non-interrupting, location-adaptive, automatic, message delivery service. The paper will contribute as a guideline to the development for emergency alert service standards for other broadcasting media.
Subjective video quality comparison on various display monitors

Recently, International Telecommunication Union approved several methods for objective video quality measurements to be included in international standards. These methods are mainly developed to measure quality of digital video on professional CRT monitors. In this paper, we performed subjective tests in order to examine the applicability of the standard quality assessment methods for different display monitors such as common CRT, PDP, and LCD TV monitors as well as professional CRT monitors. Subjective testing on different display monitors shows that there exist relatively high correlations between the various display monitors, which indicates the standard quality assessment methods can be used on the display monitors under the given conditions of subjective duality assessment.
Fast Intermode Decision for Scalable Video Coding using Statistical Hypothesis Testing

In this paper, a fast intermode decision scheme is introduced by efficiently performing the mode decision using statistical hypothesis testing for hierarchical B-picture coding of SVC, in which much computational power is expensed for combined variable block sizes and hierarchical B-pictures. The hypothesis testing in the proposed method is performed on
blocks to have early termination for RD computation of all possible modes. The early termination in intermode decision is performed by comparing the pixel values of current blocks and corresponding motion-compensated blocks. The proposed scheme exhibits effective early termination behavior in intermode decision and leads to a significant reduction up to 69% in computational complexity with slight increment in bit amounts. The degradation of visual quality turns out to be negligible in terms of PSNR values.
Efficient Digital Signal Processing of DTV TxID Based On Decimation Algorithm

Recently, Transmitter Identification(TxID) technology has been issued as a technology of ATSC DTV. ATSC DTV networks are comprised of a plurality of transmitters, broadcasting the same signal sing one frequency network(SFN) connected to EDOCR. In this single frequency network, TxID technology has been recognized as a technology in the ATSC DTV system since it enables the broadcast authorities and classify multiple transmitters. However, conventional TxID uses extremely long spreading sequence to identifying transmitters, so it increases H/W complexity and registers. Thus, to solve those hardware problems, we propose an efficient signal processing technology using decimation algorithm. Furthermore, we certified the availability of the proposed algorithm via various simulations.
Direction-Oriented Fast Full Search Algorithm at the Divided Search Range

We propose the fast full search algorithm that reduces the computational load of the block matching algorithm which is used for a motion estimation in the video coding. Since the conventional spiral search method starts searching at the center of the search window and then moves search point to estimate the motion vector pixel by pixel, it is good for the slow motion picture. However we proposed the efficient motion estimation method which is good for the fast and slow motion picture. Firstly, when finding the initial threshold value, we use the expanded predictor that can approximately calculate minimum threshold value. The proposed algorithm estimates the motion in the new search order after partitioning the search window and adapt the directional search order in the re-divided search window. At the result, we can check that the proposed algorithm reduces the computational load 94% in average compared to the conventional spiral full search algorithm without any loss of image quality.
Background Initialization by Spatiotemporal Similarity

A background initialization algorithm based on the spatiotemporal similarity measure in a motion tracking system is proposed. From the accumulated difference between the base frame and the other frames in a subinterval, the regions affected by moving objects are located. The median is applied over the subsequence in the subinterval in which co-located regions share the similarity. The outputs from each subinterval are filtered by second stage median filter. The proposed method showed good results even in the busy and crowded sequences where the real background does not exit.
