Measurement of Flickering Artifact for H.264 with Periodic I-Frame Structure

Most of multimedia video coding algorithms are lossy schemes and several kinds of spatial and temporal artifacts are inevitable. Flickering, which is the most typical coding artifact in time domain, is mainly due to fact that the quality of coded sequence fluctuates as the quantization parameter is adjusted for rate control. In this paper, we analyzed the effect of quality variation according to the characteristics of video sequence when the I-frames are periodically inserted. And we proposed the FR(Full Reference)-based assessment algorithm to measure the amount of flickering artifacts in the coded video. It is discovered that the flickering becomes critical when the level of quality is intermediate and is affected by the amount of detail or movement, the size of object, and camera parameters. The proposed measurement algorithm shows is well consistent with HVS(Human Visual System).
An Image Enhancement Algorithm based on Color Constancy and Histogram Equalization using Edge Region

A unified image enhancement method is proposed for high-resolution image which based on color constancy and histogram equalization using edge region. To speed up the method, smaller image is used when parameters of color constancy and histogram equalization are determined. In the color constancy process, nth-derivative of gaussian is applied to x and y axis separately in order to estimate the color of the illumination rapidly. In the histogram equalization process, the histogram obtained from near-edge region is used for the histogram equalization. In the experiments, high-resolution images taken by digital camcorder are used for verifying the performance of the proposed method.
Control Method of BIFS Contents for Mobile Devices with Restricted Input Key

T-DMB is using MPEG-4 BIFS standard format for broadcasting interactive data service. BIFS enables us to represent contents as a scene which consists of various objects such as AV, image, graphic, and text. It also enables us to control objects by using user interaction. BIFS was designed to be adapted to multimedia systems with various input devices. Today, however, we are in lack of considering about mobile device with restricted input unit. The problem is that a consistent user control of interactive data contents is not possible due to the limitations of input units in T-DMB terminals. To solve the problem, we defined KeyNavigator node that provides a means to select or navigate objects (like menu) in BIFS contents by arrow keys and enter key of mobile terminal. By using KeyNavigater node, not only BIFS contents providers can make BIFS contents as they want, but also users can get a way to control BIFS contents consistently and easily.
Modified One-Bit Transform Motion Estimation Algorithm based on the Wavelet Transform

Video Compression is the key technology for the transmission of multi-media data. Because the Motion Estimation is the most complex module in the video compression, fast motion estimation algorithm is essential for the real-time application. In this paper, we propose an enhanced binary motion estimation algorithm based on the wavelet transform. Proposed algorithm improve the quality of coded video.
An Adaptive Cubic Interpolation considering Neighbor Pixel Values

As the resolution of the image display devices has been diversified, the image interpolation methods has played a more important role. The cubic convolution interpolation method has been widely used because it is simple but it has no limitation of using and a good performance. This paper suggests an adaptive method to the cubic convolution interpolation. Considering the difference of the neighbored pixels values to a prediction pixel, a parameter value in the cubic convolution interpolation kernel is chosen.
High-definition Video Enhancement Using Color Constancy Based on Scene Unit and Modified Histogram Equalization

As high-definition video is broadly used in various system such as broadcast system and digital camcorder the proper method in order to improve the quality of high-definition video is needed. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to improve color and contrast of high-definition video. In order to apply the image enhancement method to high-definition video, scale-down video of high-definition video is used and the parameter for image enhancement method is computed from small size video. To enhance the color of high-definition video, we apply color constancy method. First, we separate the video into several scenes by cut detection method. Then, we apply color constancy to each scene with same parameter. To improve the contrast of high-definition video, we use union of original image and histogram equalized image, and weight is calculated based on sorting of histogram bins. Finally, the performance of proposed method is demonstrated in experiment section.
Fast Intra Prediction Mode Decision using Most Probable Mode for H.264/AVC

The most recent standard video codec, H.264/AVC achieves significant coding efficiency by using a rate-distortion optimization(RDO). The RDO is a measurement for selecting the best mode which minimizes the Lagrangian cost among several modes. As a result, the computational complexity is increased drastically in encoder. In this paper, a method for fast intra prediction mode decision is proposed to reduce the RDO complexity. To speed up Intra
and Chroma Intra encoding, the proposed method decides the case that MPM (Most Probable Mode) is the best prediction mode. In this case, the RDO process is skipped, and only MPM is used for encoding the block in Intra
. And the proposed method is also applied to the chroma Intra prediction mode in a similar way to the Intra
. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves an average encoding time saving of about 63% with negligible loss of PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio).
Stereoscopic Contents Production Workflow Based on Nonlinear Editing

Digital cinema based on digital master distribution increases with stereoscopic film as the center. DCI specification V1.0 announced at 2004, it considerates stereoscopic film screening. And now, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is establishing a task force to define the standards of a stereoscopic contents viewed in the home. Today, most Hollywood commercial stereoscopic film features animation using computer graphic. However, considering film making characteristic, stereoscopic digital cinema is required shooting in real world and editing, screening. This paper presents possibility of stereoscopic examination at NLE in the stereoscopic workflow. And we will propose new stereoscopic digital cinema workflow to apply the stereoscopic examination. Based on experimental results, the 3D ready television using 120Hz has some obstacles for contents editing, but most domestic stereoscopic monitor using circular polarization is possible for successful editing.
A Group Search-based Distributed Dynamic Channel Allocation Algorithm in Uplink Cellular System

In DCA (Dynamic Channel Allocation) scheme of uplink cellular system appling a frequency reuse factor of one, when a new call requests a channel, the new call will be blocked if its SINR (Carrier to Noise and Interference Ratio) is less than the required SINR or there is no available channel. The additional channel allocation for the blocked new call can be performed with channel borrowing in the adjacent cells. The channel borrowing causes the CCI (Co-Channel Interference), thus the SINR of the existing calls is deteriorated and the channel reallocation for the existing calls is required. As a result, the channel borrowing leads to a complex calculation so that it is a NP-hard problem. Therefore, to overcome the problem, we propose a novel Group Search-based DCA scheme which decreases the number of the blocked new calls and then reduces the number of the channel reallocation by the channel borrowing for the blocked new calls. The proposed scheme searches the all channels in a group of the adjacent cells and home cell at the same time in order to minimizes the number of the blocked new calls. The simulation results show that proposed Group Search-based DCA scheme provides better new call blocking probability and system throughput than the existing Single Search-based DCA scheme which searches only the channels in home cell.
The Analysis of TxID Signal`s Effect to Legacy Receivers in ATSC DTV System

When we implement the single frequency network (SFN) in ATSC terrestrial DTV system, there is an interference problem to DTV receivers due to the use of same frequency channel among transmitters and repeaters. To resolve this problem, it is recommended to adopt the transmitter identification signals in transmitting equipments. In this paper, we analyzed the influence suffered by legacy DTV receivers when the TxID signal is added to the DTV transmitting signals and the results were further verified by computer simulation, laboratory test and field test. The above tests show that if the TxID signal is added to the level of -30dB compared to the original DTV signal, the TOV(Threshold Of Visibility) increment in legacy receivers is about 0.17 dB. It means that we can insert and transmit the TxID signal in ATSC terrestrial DTV system without making the negative effect to the legacy DTV receivers.
Efficient Coding of Motion Vector Predictor using Phased-in Code

The H.264/AVC video coding standard performs inter prediction using variable block sizes to improve coding efficiency. Since we predict not only the motion of homogeneous regions but also the motion of non-homogeneous regions accurately using variable block sizes, we can reduce residual information effectively. However, each motion vector should be transmitted to the decoder. In low bit rate environments, motion vector information takes approximately 40% of the total bitstream. Thus, motion vector competition was proposed to reduce the amount of motion vector information. Since the size of the motion vector difference is reduced by motion vector competition, it requires only a small number of bits for motion vector information. However, we need to send the corresponding index of the best motion vector predictor for decoding. In this paper, we propose a new codeword table based on the phased-in code to encode the index of motion vector predictor efficiently. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces the average bit rate by 7.24% for similar PSNR values, and it improves the average image quality by 0.36dB at similar bit rates.
The Efficient Coding Tools based 3-Dimensional Transform in H.264/AVC

In this paper, we propose 3DTE(3-Dimensional Transform Environment) that is based on 3DT(Dimensional Transform) that performs 2-dimensional integer DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) based on
block and 1-dimensional integer DCT based on
block after collecting same frequency coefficients in neighboring
block and supports it`s additional coding tools for high performance. The transform of 3DT can keep prediction error by using
block and reduce spatial redundancy additionally. The proposed 3DTE can provide coding tools to improve the coding efficiency with using 3DT. The performance of 3DTE compared to JM11.0 is average 3.58% and 5.40% bit savings for all test sequences and HD sequences, respectively, with keeping subjective video quality in High profile.
