UCI Embedder: A Real-time Broadcast-Content-Identifier Watermarking System for Broadcast Content Distribution Services

We introduce the standard content identifier Universal Content Identifier (UCI) and a watermarking system that embeds UCI for the broadcast content distribution services. Our proposed UCI embedder is designed in consideration of integrating with the previously established broadcast system and protecting the illegal distribution of broadcast contents. Our goal is that when broadcast content is transmitted, 28 byte UCI is embedded imperceptibly in the content itself in real-time and the embedded UCI is successfully extracted not only in the typical format used in the broadcast content distribution service but also in the illegally distributed broadcast contents. Usually the illegally distributed contents are modified from the original by changing resolutions, frame rates, or adjusting colors. In this paper, we present a watermarking scheme that embeds 28 byte UCI in broadcast content in real-time while keeping the visual quality high and the embedded watermark robust enough to survive through the various modification. The experimental results show that the embedded UCI remains in the various modified versions of content and that the visual degradation by embedding is not noticeable.
A New Architecture of High-Performance Digital Hologram Generator based on Independent Calculation of a Holographic Pixel

In this paper, we proposed a hardware architecture to generate digital holograms at high speed. It used the modified computer-generated hologram (CGH) algorithm and adapted the pipeline-based hardware to be able to remove memory bottleneck problem. It uses not the method which generates a hologram by accumulating intermittent holograms but the one which independently generates a pixel of a final hologram and uses the appropriate CGH algorithm for the selected method. Based on the CGH algorithm we proposed the architecture of the digital hologram generator which consists of input interface part, calculating part, and normalizing part. The hardware can decrease memory usage because it repeatedly use object light sources which is stored in the internal buffer. It is also operationally parallelized by vertically adding unit cells. It can generate 86 frames of HD digital hologram per 1 second for 1K light sources.
Method for signaling intra prediction mode with merging MPM

In this paper, we proposed an intra coding method with merging intra prediction mode to achieve intra coding gain. The proposed method uses signaling of prediction mode with merging prediction modes, which is different from the conventional method. If the number of blocks that has the same prediction mode compared to that to be predicted from neighboring blocks exceeds the predefined threshold, then the proposed method is used in order to reduce bits of intra prediction mode for coding efficiency. Otherwise the conventional method is used. Experimental results show the proposed method achieves the PSNR gain of about 0.05 dB in RD curve and reduces the bit rates about 1 % compared with H.264/AVC. In particular, the PSNR gain of about 0.1 dB in RD curve and reduces the bit rates about 1.7 % compared with H.264/AVC at low bit-rates. we can know that the proposed method is efficient tool at low bit-rates.
A Content Retrieval Method Using Pictures Taken from a Display Robust to Partial Luminance Change

In this paper, we propose a content retrieval system using pictures taken from a display for more intelligent mobile services. We focus on the search robustness by minimizing the influence of photographing conditions such as changes in the illumination intensity. For an efficient search and precise detection, as well as robustness, we use a two-step comparison method based on indexing features and a binary map based on luminance and chrominance difference with the adjacent blocks. We also evaluate the proposed algorithm by comparing with the existing algorithms, and we show the content retrieval system that we`ve implemented using the proposed algorithm.
Efficient Film Post Production Process using Metadata on the eXtensible Markup Language

In this paper, we present a novel method to use metadata based on the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) for efficient data transfer between visual effects (VFX) and film editing. For transferring data to the VFX process, image sequences such as Cineon DPX or TGA are currently used in Korean post productions. The use of image sequences tends to increase rendering time and the amount of data for repetitive file format conversions, and as a result causes inefficiency in the entire production process. On the other hand, the use of metadata on the XML can reduce time and data because the repetitive rendering processes are not needed. This method can also be used at a variety of editing and VFX programs, and provides content information for combining online contents. The development of XML-base methods on the web enables flexible combination with other types of media.
New Intra Coding Scheme for Improving Video Coding Efficiency

H.264/AVC significantly outperforms the previous video coding standards with many new coding tools. Among these tools, several intra-block coding tools can particularly improve coding efficiency. For intra prediction, H.264/AVC supports most probable mode in the entropy coding process to reduce syntax elements indicating intra prediction modes and most probable mode selection ratio is very high. Also, in general, natural images and videos have many homogeneous regions whose high correlation with neighbouring blocks. In this paper, we propose intra prediction mode SKIP mode using decoder-side prediction to improve the coding efficiency. The proposed method is determined the optimal prediction mode using only neighbouring block`s information and coded on the basis of the conventional prediction/transform coding. And the prediction modes are not send to decoder at all. Skipped intra prediction mode is determined by decoder. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves coding gains of 1.40% for common intermediate format(CIF), 3.24% for 720p sequences against the H.264/AVC JM 17.0 reference software.
Real Time Abandoned and Removed Objects Detection System

We proposed a realtime object tracking system that detects the abandoned or disappeared objects. Because these events are caused by human, we used the tracking based algorithm. After the background subtraction by Gaussian mixture model, the shadow removal is applied for accurate object detection. The static object is classified as either of abandoned objects or disappeared object. We assigned monitoring time to the static object to overcome a situation that it is being overlapped by other object. We obtained more accurate detection by using region growing method. We implemented our algorithm by DSP processor and obtained an excellent result throughout the experiment.
Development of High-definition 3DTV Experimental System based on Dual Stream Method

This paper introduces an development of high-definition(HD) 3DTV experimental broadcasting system and its experimental service that has been launched via three broadcasting network including terrestrial, cable and satellite in the late of 2010. This 3DTV experimental broadcasting service employs an innovative 3DTV broadcasting mechanism, called as dual stream method in which left and right images are encoded by using each video encoder and multiplexed using MPEG-2 system technology for guaranteeing backward-compatibility with legacy DTV. This paper specifically describes the developed experimental broadcasting system, concentrating on 3DTV re-multiplexer and 3DTV receiver. Finally, implementation and terrestrial 3DTV experimental broadcasting service results will be introduced from the point of objective and subjective evaluation.
Design and Development of Antenna with Stabilization of Radiation Pattern and Wide-Band Characteristics for MIMO/LAN/Broadcast Operations

In this paper, we propose a new antenna, which has wide bandwidth, good radiation patterns, and high-gain characteristics. We analysis the antenna using FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain) method. And the antenna parameters are optimized to get maximum bandwidth. From the measured results, the bandwidth of the antenna is 0.839 octave, for the S11
-10 dB. And the measured cross polarization level of the proposed antenna is less than -25 dB at the center frequency. Experimental data of the return loss and the radiation pattern of the proposed antenna are also presented, and the experimental bandwidth characteristics are relatively in good agreement with the FDTD results. The proposed antenna can be applied to MIMO, LAN, biomedical instruments, broadcasting-network system.
Securing Method for Available Frequency by Changing Adaptive Protection Ratio in Adjacent Station Interference Environment of FM Broadcast

The channels of domestic FM broadcast are needed to provide various kinds of new broadcasting services. However, available channels are limited and saturated. The channel interval of FM broadcast is changed from 200 kHz to 100 kHz to maximize utilization efficiency of scarce broadcast spectrum at all over the world. Also, there are many researches such as IBOC(In Band On Channel) and DRM+(Digital Radio Mondial+) that is to allocate the digital signal beside analog bandwidth. But output power is decrease to avoid interference between adjacent radio stations. In this paper, we analyzes the problems of the protection ratio which is decided in 1986 and we propose method to improve about 7~10dB significantly the protection ratio according to the recent DSP(Digital Signal Processing) techniques without loss of both transmission power and broadcast quality. In addition, we examined the possibility of securing two times available channels by reducing minimum frequency interval from 800 kHz to 400 kHz or 600 kHz in the equal site.
An Edge Profile Adaptive Bi-directional Diffusion Interpolation

In this paper, we propose an edge profile adaptive bi-directional diffusion interpolation method which consists of shock filter and level set. In recent years many interpolation methods have been proposed but all methods have some degrees of artifacts such as blurring and jaggies. To solve these problems, we adaptively apply shock filter and level set method where shock filter enhances edge along the normal direction and level set method removes jaggies artifact along the tangent direction. After the initial interpolation, weights of shock filter and level set are locally adjusted according to the edge profile. By adaptive coupling shock filter with level set method, the proposed method can remove jaggies artifact and enhance the edge. Experimental results show that the average PSNR and MSSIM of our method are increased, and contour smoothness and edge sharpness are also improved.
A Frame-based Coding Mode Decision for Temporally Active Video Sequence in Distributed Video Coding

Intra mode decision is a useful coding tool in Distributed Video Coding (DVC) for improving DVC coding efficiency for video sequences having fast motion. A major limitation associated with the existing intra mode decision methods, however, is that its efficiency highly depends on user-specified thresholds or modeling parameters. This paper proposes an entropy-based method to address this problem. The probabilities of intra and Wyner?Ziv (WZ) modes are determined firstly by examining correlation of pixels in spatial and temporal directions. Based on these probabilities, entropy of the intra and the WZ modes are computed. A comparison based on the entropy values decides a coding mode between intra coding and WZ coding without relying on any user-specified thresholds or modeling parameters. Experimental results show its superior rate-distortion performance of improvements of PSNR up to 2 dB against a conventional Wyner?Ziv coding without intra mode decision. Furthermore, since the proposed method does not require any thresholds or modeling parameters from users, it is very attractive for real life applications.
MPEG-2 TS Header Extension for Efficient HTTP Adaptive Stream of SVC/MVC

In this paper, we propose the extension of the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) header for efficient adaptation of multi-layer coded video such as scalable video coding (SVC) and multiview video coding (MVC) in the HTTP streaming. First of all, the limit of the existing TS in terms of flexible adaptation of multi-layer video is investigated, and the signaling by extending TS header is proposed to provide efficient adaptation in a TS level. The proposed extension utilizes the private data field in the adaptation field of TS header to signal scalability and/or view information, which enable us to support diverse adaptation that suits underlying constraints of client capabilities, network conditions and user preferences. In short, the extension enables adaptation of scalable video with full scalability as well as view selection of multiview video in a TS level while keeping backward compatibility with the existing TS syntax/semantics. The performance of the proposed extension is compared with the existing adaptation using PID (packet ID) in terms of efficiency and complexity of adaptation. Furthermore, the increase of TS overhead caused by proposed extension is analyzed and an extension scheme to minimized the overhead is proposed.
Network Adaptive ARQ Error Control Scheme for Effective Video Transport over IP Networks

In this paper, we propose an effective network-adaptive ARQ based error control scheme to provide video streaming services through IP networks where packet error usually occurs. If time delay and feedback channel are allowed, client can request server to retransmit lost packets through IP networks. However, if retransmission is unconditionally requested without considering network condition and number of simultaneous feedback messages, retransmitted packets may not arrive in a timely manner so that decoding may not occur. In the proposed ARQ, a client conditionally requests retransmission based on assumed network condition, and it further determines valid retransmission time so that effective ARQ can be applied. In order to verify the performance of the proposed adaptive ARQ based error control, NIST-Net is used to emulate packet-loss network environment. It is shown by simulations that the proposed scheme provides noticeable error resilience with significantly reduced traffics required for ARQ.
A Development of DMB-AF Player Supporting 3D Video Contents

Recently an extension to DMB-AF (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting Application Format) standard was proposed in  without sufficient validation for industrial application due to incomplete implementation. The extended DMB-AF can include stereoscopic video and stereoscopic images for interactive service data, i.e., MPEG-4 BIFS data, in addition to the existing 2D video and 2D images for BIFS services. The contents in the extended DMB-AF can provide a temporal mixture of 2D/3D video presentations possibly with or without 2D/3D images for BIFS services. In this paper we developed DMB-AF player software that can play the extended DMB-AF files and authored several test files for its verification. As a result, we introduced a new method for indicating dependencies of 3D media tracks to improve the extension in  and validated the extended DMB-AF with the improvement.
Sharpness Measure Based on the Frequency Domain Information

In this paper, a new no-reference sharpness measure using frequency domain coefficients is proposed. Although most existing sharpness measures used pixel intensity to compute the blur degree, the proposed sharpness measure computes the sharpness using frequency coefficients. To assess the perceived sharpness of a given image, the image is re-blurred by a Gaussian low pass filter and a new quality measure function was defined using the frequency domain coefficients of the given image and the re-blurred image. To evaluate the proposed algorithms, TID2008 quality assessment database was used. Experimental results show that the proposed quality assessment method showed high correlation with the subjective scores.
Multi-spectral Imaging-based Color Image Reconstruction Using the Conventional Bayer CFA

This paper presents an imaging system for reconstruction of enhanced color images using the conventional Bayer CFA. By extracting various colors such as RGBCY from two sequential images which consist of a image by broadband G channel lens filter and the other image captured without one, the proposed color image reconstruction system can reduce the computational complexity for demosaicking and make high resolution color information without aliasing artifacts. Because the proposed system uses the common Bayer CFA image sensor, fabricating a new type of CFA is not necessary for obtaining a multi-spectral image, which can be easily extensible for applications of multi-spectral imaging. Finally, in order to verify the performance of the proposed system, experimental results are performed. By comparing with the existing demosaicking methods, the proposed camera system showed the significant improvements in the sense of color resolution.
