Detecting Rectangular Image Regions in a Window Image for 3D Conversion

In recent years, 2D-to-3D conversion techniques have gained much attraction. Most of conventional methods focused on natural images such as movie, animation and so forth. However, it is difficult to apply these techniques to window images mixed with text, image, logo, and icon. Also, different depth values of text pixels will cause distortion and a proper 3D image can not be delivered in some situations. To solve this problem, we propose a method to classify a given image into either a window or a natural image. For the window image, only rectangular image regions (RIR) are detected and converted in 3D. Other text and background are displayed in 2D. The proposed method was performed on more than 10,000 test images. In the experimental results, the detection ratio of window image reaches 97% and RIR detection ratio is 87%.
A Fast and Low-complexity Motion Estimation for UHD HEVC

In this paper, we propose a novel fast and low-complexity Motion Estimation (ME) algorithm for Ultra High Definition (UHD) High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Motion estimation occupies 77~81% of the amount of computation in HEVC. After all, the main key of video codec implementation is to find a fast and low-complexity motion estimation algorithm and architecture. We analyze the previous motion estimation algorithms and propose three optimal algorithm to reduce the computation proportion for HEVC. The proposed algorithm uses only 0.36% of the amount of operations compared to full search algorithm while maintaining compression performance with slight loss of 1.1%.
CPU Parallel Processing and GPU-accelerated Processing of UHD Video Sequence using HEVC

The latest video coding standard HEVC was developed by the joint work of JCT-VC(Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding) from ITU-T VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG. The HEVC standard reduces the BD-Bitrate of about 50% compared with the H.264/AVC standard. However, using the various methods for obtaining the coding gains has increased complexity problems. The proposed method reduces the complexity of HEVC by using both CPU parallel processing and GPU-accelerated processing. The experiment result for UHD(
) video sequences achieves 15fps encoding/decoding performance by applying the proposed method. Sooner or later, we expect that the H/W speedup of data transfer rates between CPU and GPU will result in reducing the encoding/decoding times much more.
Detection Method for Digital Radio Mondiale Signal in FM-band

In this paper, we propose a detection method for Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Plus suitable for hybrid mode broadcasting which services both DRM Plus and analog FM within the same frequency band. The guard-interval correlation method of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is good for DRM Plus signal detection, but the possibility for false alarm increases when FM signal is received. The proposed method includes a reference block in the guard-interval correlation which increases the identification rate of weak DRM Plus signals and decreases the possibility of false alarm when analog FM is received. The performance of the proposed method is verified through simulations.
Study of Parallelization Methods for Software based Real-time HEVC Encoder Implementation

Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC), which have founded ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG, has standardized High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Standardization of HEVC has started with purpose of twice or more coding performance compared to H.264/AVC. However, flexible and hierarchical coding block and recursive coding structure are problems to overcome of HEVC standard. Many fast encoding algorithms for reducing computational complexity of HEVC encoder have been proposed. However, it is hard to implement a real-time HEVC encoder only with those fast encoding algorithms. In this paper, for implementation of software-based real-time HEVC encoder, data-level parallelism using SIMD instructions and CPU/GPU multi-threading methods are proposed. And we also proposed appropriate operations and functional modules to apply the proposed methods on HM 10.0 software. A Method of Frame Synchronization for Stereoscopic 3D Video

In this paper, we propose a method of frame synchronization for stereoscopic 3D video to solve the viewing problem caused by synchronization errors between a left video and a right video using the temporal frame difference image depending on the movement of objects. Firstly, we compute two temporal frame difference images from the left video and the right video which are corrected the vertical parallax between two videos using rectification, and calculate two horizontal projection profiles of two temporal frame difference images. Then, we find a pair of synchronized frames of the two videos by measuring the mean of absolute difference (MAD) of two horizontal projection profiles. Experimental results show that the proposed method can be used for stereoscopic 3D video, and is robust against Gaussian noise and video compression by H.264/AVC.
Multi-view Image Generation using Grid-mesh based Image Domain Warping and Occlusion Region Information

In this paper, we propose an algorithm that generates multi-view images by grid-mesh based image domain warping using occlusion mask and various image features obtained from the stereoscopic images. In the proposed algorithm, we first extract image saliency map, line segments and disparity saliency map from stereo images and then get them through a process that improves the quality of extracted features. This process is accomplished in two steps. In the first step, reliability of disparity saliency map on object boundary regions is enhanced by using occlusion information. And in the second step, we enhance the quality of image features in terms of temporal consistency by using temporal consistency information for stereo images. With these enhanced features, multi-view images are generated by grid-mesh based image domain warping technique. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than existing algorithms in terms of visual quality.
Design and Performance Analysis of Exclusive-OR Based FEC Coding System for Error Resilient SVC Video Transmission

In this paper, we design and analyze performance of Exclusive-OR based FEC (Forward error correction) system to deploy SVC video transmission service over packet-loss prone IP network. In the designed system, we adopt standard compliant Exclusive-OR based FEC scheme and apply it to be appropriate to the hierarchical layer structure of SVC video. To verify the performance of the designed Exclusive-OR based FEC system for SVC video transmission, we employ NIST-NET based transport simulator. By the SVC video transmission using the NIST-NET based simulator, we confirm the error resilient transmission performance of the designed Exclusive-OR based FEC system.
Characteristics of Power Amplifier for Energy Efficient Broadcasting Services

In this paper, we investigate the characteristics of power amplifiers and simplified memoryless non-linear power amplifier models for energy efficient communication system. First, we present the transfer function of GaAs FET (Gallium Arsenide Field Effect Transistor) that is widely used for high power amplifier. From those investigations, we introduce the instantaneous efficiencies and methods of amplification by assuming that the saturated current is constant, while perfect linearity is exploited under knee voltage. Then, we discuss four non-linear power amplifier models in a baseband signal processing. Finally, we explain the specified total power consumption model in a base station to achieve the resonable analysis for energy efficient communication.
The Method of Multi-screen Service using Scene Composition Technology based on HTML5

Multi-screen service is a service that consumes more than one media in a number of terminals simultaneously or discriminately. This multi-screen service has become useful due to distribute of smart TV and terminals. Also, in case of hybrid broadcasting environment that is convergence of broadcasting and communication environment, it is able to provide various user experience through contents consumed by multiple screens. In hybrid broadcasting environment, scene composition technology can be used as an element technology for multi-screen service. Using scene composition technology, multiple media can be consumed complexly through the specified presentation time and space. Thus, multi-screen service based on the scene composition technology can provide spatial and temporal control and consumption of multiple media by linkage between the terminals. However, existing scene composition technologies are not able to use easily in hybrid broadcasting because of applicable environmental constraints, the difficulty in applying the various terminal and complexity. For this problems, HTML5 can be considered. HTML5 is expected to be applied in various smart terminals commonly, and provides consumption of diverse media. So, in this paper, it proposes the scene composition and multi-screen service technology based on HTML5 that is expected be used in various smart terminals providing hybrid broadcasting environment. For this, it includes the introduction in terms of HTML5 and multi-screen service, the method of providing information related with scene composition and multi-screen service through the extention of elements and attributes in HTML5, media signaling between terminals and the method of synchronization. In addition, the proposed scene composition and multi-screen service technology based on HTML5 was verified through the implementation and experiment.
The Characteristics Analysis of Ultra Wideband Printed Antenna using FDTD Method

The proposed print antenna using Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) method is analyzed in this paper. A low radiation resistance and an ultra-wide band of this antenna are also presented. The propagation process of the reflected wave and the electric field distribution in the time domain are calculated in respectively. The antenna parameters are optimized for the maximum band width, return loss, input impedance, and radiation pattern in the frequency domain using Fourier transforming. The experimental bandwidth of the antenna is 1.85GHz~6.35GHz for the VSWR less than or equal to 2.0. The measured results are relatively in good agreement with the FDTD results. The proposed antenna can be applied to various applications such as UWB, broadcasting-network system.
Speech Quality Estimation Algorithm using a Harmonic Modeling of Reverberant Signals

The acoustic signal from a distance sound source in an enclosed space often produces reverberant sound that varies depending on room impulse response. The estimation of the level of reverberation or the quality of the observed signal is important because it provides valuable information on the condition of system operating environment. It is also useful for designing a dereverberation system. This paper proposes a speech quality estimation method based on the harmonicity of received signal, a unique characteristic of voiced speech. At first, we show that the harmonic signal modeling to a reverberant signal is reasonable. Then, the ratio between the harmonically modeled signal and the estimated non-harmonic signal is used as a measure of standard room acoustical parameter, which is related to speech clarity. Experimental results show that the proposed method successfully estimates speech quality when the reverberation time varies from 0.2s to 1.0s. Finally, we confirm the superiority of the proposed method in both background noise and reverberant environments.
Implementation of SNR Estimator for ISDB-T Systems

This paper aims to realize a Signal to Noise Ratio Estimator which constitutes a critical index of the broadcasting system in OFDM system with a synchronized type based on ISDB-T system. Of the elements which are comprising OFDM segments of ISDB-T system using the MSE algorithm suitable for ASIC design owing to its low complexity among a diverse SNR estimation methods, SNR estimation method using the broadcasting information data and the SNR estimation method using scattered pilot signal were realized by RTL. These two methods were compared in terms of their performance through simulation test not only in the AWGN channel which is an ideal channel, but also in SFN channel and frequency selective fading channel, which are distorted channels. Complexity of two methods were also compared through RTL realization. As a result of this comparison analysis, it was concluded that the SNR estimation method using scattered pilot signal shows more excellent performance and easiness in realization.
Color Image Compression based on Inverse Colorization with Meanshift Subdivision Calculation

In this letter, we propose a method for colorization based coding, which divides the colorization matrix into smaller sub-matrices using the meanshift segmentation. Using the proposed method the computation speed becomes more than 30 times faster. Furthermore, the smearing artifact, which appears in conventional colorization based compression method, is greatly reduced.
