A Study on the Microstrip Patch Antenna Using FDTD Method
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 2, issue 1, 1997, Pages 1~7
In this paper, a microstrip patch antenna was analyzed by using FDTD method. Firstly, the electric field in the microstrip patch antenna was obtained by approximating a Maxwell's equation to a finite difference equation by means of Yee's algorithm. In this case, Mur's 1st approximation and dispersive boundary condition(BBC) were applied to an absorbing boundary condition. We also analyzed a single microstrip patch antenna by using the FDTD method, then calculating the propagative process in the wave of a return loss. Also, as the result that FDTD was applied to 2-array antenna designed to increase the gain of antenna, the measured results was in relatively good accordance with the values calculated by the FDTD method. The calculated impedance, return loss and VSWR were comparatively good. And these results were In relatively good accordance with the measured values.
A Design and Implementation of the Real-Time MPEG-1 Audio Encoder
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 2, issue 1, 1997, Pages 8~15
In this paper, a real-time operating Motion Picture Experts Group-1 (MPEG-1) audio encoder system is implemented using a TMS320C31 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) chip. The basic operation of the MPEG-1 audio encoder algorithm based on audio layer-2 and psychoacoustic model-1 is first verified by C-language. It is then realized using the Texas Instruments (Tl) assembly in order to reduce the overall execution time. Finally, the actual BSP circuit board for the encoder system is designed and implemented. In the system, the side-modules such as the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) control, the input/output (I/O) control, the bit-stream transmission from the DSP board to the PC and so on, are utilized with a field programmable gate array (FPGA) using very high speed hardware description language (VHDL) codes. The complete encoder system is able to process the stereo audio signal in real-time at the sampling frequency 48 kHz, and produces the encoded bit-stream with the bit-rate 192 kbps. The real-time operation capability of the encoder system and the good quality of the decoded sound are also confirmed using various types of actual stereo audio signals.
Multi-Viewpoint Stereo Image Synthesis Using Multi-Resolution EPI Method
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 2, issue 1, 1997, Pages 16~23
Among the main technologies to implement 3D TV succeeding HDTV, multi-viewpoint image display technique is rising as an important issue, which can display the viewpoint-dependent images corresponding to viewer's position. This paper presents a novel method that solves too much computational overload that is main drawback of previous methods. Using down sampling technique, multiresolution EPIs are made from multi-viewpoint image set and trace lines are detected in the lowest resolution EPI. The parameters of detected trace lines are transferred to higher resolution EPIs and revised by utilizing the information of the previous resolution EPI. This procedure is iterated until orignal resolution EPI. Using the proposed method, we have achieved the reduction of computational time and the robustness to noise in comparison to previous method.
The Subjective Assessment Testing of Basic and Transmission Video Quality for Digital Broadcasting Satellite
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 2, issue 1, 1997, Pages 24~35
Basic and transmission video quality testing was performed in real-time mode using hardware video codec based on MPEG-2 MP@ML standard including subsequent transmitting and receiving satellite simulator unit. The double-stimulus Impairment scale method and the double-stimulus continous quality scale method based on CCIR 500-5 were used as an evaluation method. The whole digital broadcasting satellite system consisting of MPEG-2 codec, system mux/demux, channel codec, channel, modem, antenna, etc. was put into the overall video quality testbed and the basic and transmission error quality assessment was performed at various bitrates and BER for an integrated system performance evaluation. In transmission error video quality testing, transmission error video quality maintained on average above 3.9 point on the 5-point scale. The low-bit rate quality such as film mode(@2Mbps) highly depended on the statitical characteristics of video source and maintained on average around 2.7 point.
A Study on Perspective Display Using 3D Elevation Data with 2D Information Overlay
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 2, issue 1, 1997, Pages 36~44
We propose 3D perspective display using elevation matrix data with 2D information overlay. This algorithm is based on ID scan-line method and we used color index of the newly developed raster map, VRRG(Vector Restored Raster Graphics). The proposed method allows the fast generation of perspective view of 3D data with 2D overlay and the fast selective display of the features of 2D overlay.
A Fast Algorithm with Adaptive Thresholding for Wavelet Transform Based Blocking Artifact Reduction
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 2, issue 1, 1997, Pages 45~55
In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm with adaptive thresholding for the wavelet transform (WT) based blocking artifact reduction. In the fast algorithm, all processings that are equivalent to the processing in WT domain of the first and second scale are performed in spatial domain. In the adaptive thresholding, the threshold values used to classify the block boundary are selected adaptively according to each input image by using the statistical properties of the WT of the coded signal at block boundary and at block center, which can be obtained in spatial domain. Experimental results showed that the proposed fast algorithm is about 10 times faster than the WT-based algorithm. It also was found that the postprocessing with proposed adaptive thresholding yields some PSNR improvement and better subjective quality over that with nonadaptive thresholding which has best performance at high compression ratios of a certain .image, even at low compression ratios.
Study of an Adaptive Multichannel Rate Control Scheme for HDTV Encoder
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 2, issue 1, 1997, Pages 56~64
An HDTV frame has 4~6 times more pixels than a DTV frame. In order to encode the HDTV image in real time, parallel processing architectures have been widely used in many HDTV codec developments. That is, an HDTV Image is divided into several subbands and each subband is encoded in parallel using some DTV level encoders. In this paper, we adopt an HDTV codec architecture which divides an HDTV frame into 4 subbands and propose a new scene change detection algorithm using local variance. In addition, a new adaptive multichannel rate control scheme which allocate target bits adaptively to each subband of the HDTV image based on the activities of subband images is suggested in this paper. The activities of subband images are calculated at scene change detection part and reused at the adaptive rate control part. The simulation results show that the proposed scene change detection algorithm detects the scene change of HDTV video very accurately. Also the suggested adaptive multichannel rate control scheme shows better performance than the rate control method which allocates target bits equally to each subbands of the HDTV image.
Fast Triangular Mesh Approximation for Terrain Data Using Wavelet Coefficients
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 2, issue 1, 1997, Pages 65~73
This paper propose a new triangular mesh approximation method using wavelet coefficients for large terrain data. Using spatio-freguency localization characteristics of wavelet coefficients, we determine the complexity of terrain data and approximate the data according to the complexity. This proposed algorithm is simple and requires low computational cost due to its top-down approach. Because of the similarity between the mesh approximation and data compression procedures based on wavelet transform, we combine the mesh approximation scheme with the Embedded Zerotree Wavelet (EZW) coding scheme for the effective management of large terrain data. Computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is very prospective for the 3-D visualization of terrain data.
A Robust Content-Based Image Retrieval Technique for Distorted Query Image
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 2, issue 1, 1997, Pages 74~83
We have proposed a composite feature measure which combines the color and shape features of an image for image retrieval. We improved the performance of retrieval based on the efficient color quantization using the Lloyd-Max quanizer and on the Histogram matrix matching method which considers the spatial correlation of quantized color group. We also supplemented the color information using shape information with the Improved Moment Invarlants. We have tested our technique on Image database consisting of 200 actual trademark images. Our experimental results showed that our approach improved the performance compared to the previous method under the various situations such as rotation images, translation images, noise added images, gamma corrected images and so on. The efficiency of retrieval is found to be very high and experimental results are
