A Real-time Augmented Video System using Chroma-Pattern Tracking
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 1, 2002, Pages 2~9
Recently. VR( Virtual Reality) applications such as virtual studio and virtual character are wifely used In TV programs. and AR( Augmented Reality) applications are also belong taken an interest increasingly. This paper introduces a virtual screen system. which Is a new AR application for broadcasting. The virtual screen system is a real-time video augmentation system by tracking a chroma-patterned moving panel. We haute recently developed a virtual screen system.'K-vision'. Our system enables the user to hold and morse a simple panel on which live video, pictures of 3D graphics images can appear. All the Images seen on the panel change In the correct perspective, according to movements of the camera and the user holding the panel, in real-time. For the purpose of tracking janet. we use some computer vision techniques such as blob analysis and feature tracking. K-vision can work well with any type of camera. requiring no special add-ons. And no need for sensor attachments to the panel. no calibration procedures required. We are using K-vision in some TV programs such as election. documentary and entertainment.
Analysis of Field Test Results of Digital TV On-Channel Repeaters
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 1, 2002, Pages 10~20
In order to fill the gaps in DTV coverage, KBS Technical Research Institute has researched on DTV on-channel repeating systems as well as DTV translators. The on-channel repeater can reuse frequency resources for expanding service coverage. but it has also many restricts in applications for ATSC DTV system. Thiss Paper compares two kinds of DTV on-channel repealer systems and also presents field test results of both systems. From these results, we Infer their characteristics and summarize the conditions and possibilities of the application for our broadcasting networks.
Development of A News Event Reenactment System
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 1, 2002, Pages 21~27
This paper presents a mews event reenactment system (NERS), which generates virtual character animations in a quick and convenient manner. Thus, NERS can be used to produce computer graphics(CG) scenes of news events that are hard to photograph, such as fire, traffic accident, cases of murder, and so on. By using plenty of captured motion data and CG model data this system produces an appropriate animation of virtual characters straightforwardly without any motion capturing device and actors in the authoring stage. NERS is designed to be capable of making virtual characters move along user-defined paths, stitching motions smoothly and modifyingthe positions and of the articulations of a virtual character in a specific frame. Therefore a virtual character can be controlled precisely so as to interact with the virtual environments and other characters. NERS provides both an interactive and script-based (MEL: Maya Embedded Language) interface so that user can this system in a convenient way. This system has been implemented as a plug-in of commercial CG tool, Maya (Alias/wavefront), in order to make use of its advanced functions
Interactive Broadcasting System based on MPEG-4
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 1, 2002, Pages 28~36
In this paper. we propose an interactive broadcasting system based on MPEG-4 to provide Interactive services in digital TV broadcast. The proposed system is designed to support various functionalities such as authoringof MPEG-4. encapsulation of MPEG-4 Into MPEG-2 TS (Transport Stream) protocol, synchronization of MPEG-4 with MPEG-2 program. demultiplexing of MPEG-4 from MPEG-2 TS. decoding/rendering of MPEG-4 and interactivity through IP network on ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) platform. The interactive broadcasting system based on MPEG-4 Is used to provide interactive functionality In full for user. and it has a particular advantage of substitution for the ATSC or DVB platform. as well.
Wavelet-based Video Coding Scheme using Multi-resolution Motion Compensation
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 1, 2002, Pages 37~44
In this paper. we propose a new video coding scheme with multi-resolution motion compensation and residual quantization. The main functional blocks of the proposed scheme include multi-level wavelet decomposition. motion estimation and motion compensation. raster scanning within each subband. formation of block trees and blocking partitioning. and adaptive arithmetic coding. Although the proposed ceding scheme is simple and requires low computational complexity, it produces bitstreams tilth good features. such as the embedded structure and SNR scalability. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed coding scheme is quote competitive to and often outperforms other wavelet-based video coding schemes in the literature.
Video Compression using Characteristics of Wavelet Coefficients
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 1, 2002, Pages 45~54
This paper proposes a video compression algorithm using characteristics of wavelet coefficients. The proposed algorithm can provide lowed bit rate and faster running time while guaranteeing the reconstructed image qualify by the human virtual system. In this approach, each video sequence is decomposed into a pyramid structure of subimages with various resolution to use multiresolution capability of discrete wavelet transform. Then similarities between two neighboring frames are obtained from a low-frequency subband which Includes an important information of an image and motion informations are extracted from the similarity criteria. Four legion selection filters are designed according to the similarity criteria and compression processes are carried out by encoding the coefficients In preservation legions and replacement regions of high-frequency subbands. Region selection filters classily the high-frequency subbands Into preservation regions and replacement regions based on the similarity criteria and the coefficients In replacement regions are replaced by that of a reference frame or reduced to zero according to block-based similarities between a reference frame and successive frames. Encoding is carried out by quantizing and arithmetic encoding the wavelet coefficients in preservation regions and replacement regions separately. A reference frame is updated at the bottom point If the curve of similarity rates looks like concave pattern. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides high compression ratio with proper Image quality. It also outperforms the previous Milton's algorithm in an Image quality, compression ratio and running time, leading to compression ratio less than 0.2bpp. PSNR of 32 dB and running tome of 10ms for a standard video image of size 352
A Fast Multiresolution Motion Estimation Algorithm in the Adaptive Wavelet Transform Domain
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 1, 2002, Pages 55~65
Wavelet transform has recently emerged as a promising technique for video processing applications due to its flexibility in representing non-stationary video signals. Motion estimation which uses wavelet transform of octave band division method is applied In many places but if motion estimation error happens in the lowest frequency band. motion estimation error is accumulated by next time strep and there has the Problem that time and the data amount that are cost In calculation at each steps are increased. On the other hand. wavelet packet that achieved the best image quality in a given bit rate from a rate-distortion sense is suggested. But, this method has the disadvantage of time costs on designing wavelet packet. In order to solve this problem we solved this problem by introducing Top_down method. But we did not find the optimum solution in a given butt rate. That image variance can represent image complexity is considered in this paper. In this paper. we propose a fast multiresolution motion estimation scheme based on the adaptive wavelet transform for video compression.

Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 1, 2002, Pages 66~75
In this paper, a new wireless internet service for TV is proposed using the detection of a mobile agent of each mobile company Especially. new broadcasting programs like as music charts. quiz games can be serried by a mobile internet phone. In this proposed system, all mobile protocols( WAP, ME. W3C) are supported by one server based on the mobile agent detection of URL over the existed wire and wireless internees.
