Camera and Receiver Development for 3D HDTV Broadcasting
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 3, 2002, Pages 211~218
This paper introduces the HD 3DTV camera and 3DTV receiver that are compatible with the ATSC HDTV broadcasting system. The developed 3DTV camera is based on stereoscopic techniques, and it has control function to control both left and right zoom lens simultaneously and to control the vergence. Moreover, in order to control the vergence manually and to eliminate the synchronization problem of the both images, the 3DTV camera has the 3DTV video multiplexing function to combine the left and right images into the single image. The developed 3DTV signal, and it has the various analog/digital interfaces. The performance of the developed system is confirmed by shooting the selected soccer game in 2002 FIFA KOREA/JAPANTM World Cup and by broadcasting the match. The HD 3DTV camera and receiver will be applied to the 3DTV industries such as 3D movie, 3D game, 3D image processing, 3DTV broadcasting system, and so on.
Stereoscopic Conversion based on Key Frames
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 3, 2002, Pages 219~228
In this paper, we propose a new method of converting 2D video into 3D stereoscopic video, called stereoscopic conversion. In general, stereoscopic images are produced using the motion informations. However unreliable motion informations obtained especially from block-based motion estimation cause the wrong generation of stereoscopic images. To solve for this problem, we propose a stereoscopic conversion method based upon the utilization of key frame that has the better accuracy of estimated motion informations. As well, as generation scheme of stereoscopic images associated with the motion type of each key frame is proposed. For the performance evaluation of our proposed method, we apply it to five test images and measure the accuracy of key frame-based stereoscopic conversion. Experimental results show that our proposed method has the accuracy more than about 90 percent in terms of the detection ratio of key frames.
Hierarchical Disparity Estimation for Image Synthesis in Stereo Mixed Reality
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 3, 2002, Pages 229~237
Natural synthesis of real and virtual images is a key technology in mixed reality. For this purpose, we propose an efficient dense disparity estimation algorithm and a synthesis algorithm considering features of stereo images. Dense disparities are estimated hierarchically from the low to high resolution images. In the process, the region-dividing-bidirectional-matching algorithm makes matching process efficient and keeps the reliability of the estimated disparities, and dense disparities are assigned considering edge information. finally, mixed reality stereo images are synthesized by comparing depth data of real and virtual Images. Computer simulation shows that the proposed algorithms estimate very stable disparity vectors with sharp edge and synthesize natural stereo mixed reality images.
Object-based Stereo Sequence Coding using Disparity and Motion Vector Relationship
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 3, 2002, Pages 238~247
In this paper, we propose an object-based stereo sequence compression technique using disparity-motion vector relationship. The proposed method uses the coherence of motion vectors and disparity vectors in the left and right Image sequences. After two motion vectors and one disparity vector ate computed using FBMA(Fixed Block Matching Algorithm), the disparity vector of the current stereoscopic pall is computed by disparity-motion vector relationship with vectors which are previously estimated. Moreover, a vector regularization technique is applied in order to obtain reliable vectors. For an object-based coding. the object is defined and coded in terms of layers of VOP such as in MPEG-4. we present a method using disparity and motion vector relationship for extending two-frame compensation into three-frame compensation method for prediction coding of B-VOP. The proposed algorithm shows a high performance when comparing with a conventional method.
3-D Object Tracking using 3-D Information and Optical Correlator in the Stereo Vision System
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 3, 2002, Pages 248~261
In this paper, we proposed a new 3-dimensional(3-D) object-tracking algorithm that can control a stereo camera using a variable window mask supported by which uses ,B-D information and an optical BPEJTC. Hence, three-dimensional information characteristics of a stereo vision system, distance information from the stereo camera to the tracking object. can be easily acquired through the elements of a stereo vision system. and with this information, we can extract an area of the tracking object by varying window masks. This extractive area of the tracking object is used as the next updated reference image. furthermore, by carrying out an optical BPEJTC between a reference image and a stereo input image the coordinates of the tracking objects location can be acquired, and with this value a 3-D object tracking can be accomplished through manipulation of the convergence angie and a pan/tilt of a stereo camera. From the experimental results, the proposed algorithm was found to be able to the execute 3-D object tracking by extracting the area of the target object from an input image that is independent of the background noise in the stereo input image. Moreover a possible implementation of a 3-D tele-working or an adaptive 3-D object tracker, using the proposed algorithm is suggested.
A Region-based Image Retrieval System using Salient Point Extraction and Image Segmentation
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 3, 2002, Pages 262~270
Although most image indexing schemes ate based on global image features, they have limited discrimination capability because they cannot capture local variations of the image. In this paper, we propose a new region-based image retrieval system that can extract important regions in the image using salient point extraction and image segmentation techniques. Our experimental results show that color and texture information in the region provide a significantly improved retrieval performances compared to the global feature extraction methods.
Measurement and Analysis of Terrestrial DTV Bitstreams in Korea
Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 3, 2002, Pages 271~276
It is very important to find errors in broadcasted streams because it can help us to find where errors occur. Broadcasted streams may have errors in the RF(radio frequency) or baseband domain. It is very important to fix these errors because it can help to stabilize set-top boxes, provide stable receiving, and give comfortable environments to watch TV. Since 2001, major terrestrial broadcasters in Korea started the DTV broadcasting in Kwan-Ak over Seoul area. In this paper, we provide some analysis on errors in MPEG-based TS streams, PSIP packets, and RF area which may occur in DTV systems and compare this result with that of USA.

Journal of Broadcast Engineering, volume 7, issue 3, 2002, Pages 277~284
In recent years, data broadcasting kas been drawing muck attention with glowing importance. In this paper, we implement a DASE middleware which is crucial for the data-ready DTV settop box. The software has been ported to a prototype system and tested with real time broadcasting streams.
