Image based Shading Techniques for Surfaces with Irregular and Complex Textures Formed by Heterogeneous Materials
Lee, Joo-Rim ; Nam, Yang-Hee ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 1~9
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.001
In this paper we present a shading technique for realistic rendering of the surfaces with irregular and complex textures using a single photograph. So far, most works have been using many photographs or special photographing equipment to render the surfaces with irregular and complex textures as well as dividing texture regions manually. We present an automatic selection method of the region segmentation techniques according to properties of materials. As our technique produces a reflectance model and the approximated Bidirectional Reflection Distribution Function(BRDF) parameters, it allows the recovery of the photometric properties of diffuse, specular, isotropic or anisotropic textured objects. Also it make it possible to present several synthetic images with novel lighting conditions and views.
Printed Hangul Recognition with Adaptive Hierarchical Structures Depending on 6-Types
Ham, Dae-Sung ; Lee, Duk-Ryong ; Choi, Kyung-Ung ; Oh, Il-Seok ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 10~18
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.010
Due to a large number of classes in Hangul character recognition, it is usual to use the six-type preclassification stage. After the preclassification, the first consonent, vowel, and last consonent can be classified separately. Though each of three components has a few of classes, classification errors occurs often due to shape similarity such as `ㅔ` and `ㅖ`. So this paper proposes a hierarchical recognition method which adopts multi-stage tree structures for each of 6-types. In addition, to reduce the interference among three components, the method uses the recognition results of first consonents and vowel as features of vowel classifier. The recognition accuracy for the test set of PHD08 database was 98.96%.

Kim, Jong-Min ; Kang, Myung-A ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 19~26
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.019
This paper proposes a classifier based on rectangular feature to detect face in real time. The goal is to realize a strong detection algorithm which satisfies both efficiency in calculation and detection performance. The proposed algorithm consists of the following three stages: Feature creation, classifier study and real time facial domain detection. Feature creation organizes a feature set with the proposed five rectangular features and calculates the feature values efficiently by using SAT (Summed-Area Tables). Classifier learning creates classifiers hierarchically by using the AdaBoost algorithm. In addition, it gets excellent detection performance by applying important face patterns repeatedly at the next level. Real time facial domain detection finds facial domains rapidly and efficiently through the classifier based on the rectangular feature that was created. Also, the recognition rate was improved by using the domain which detected a face domain as the input image and by using PCA and KNN algorithms and a Class to Class rather than the existing Point to Point technique.

DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.027
In wireless networks environment, there are attempts for constructing systems through which we can monitor and control various electronic devices used in large buildings at remoteness by using Zigbee protocol. Since address assignment method of DAA in Zigbee has a depth restriction, we cannot construct a network in large buildings. And also communication failures are frequent in a large network since broadcast storm can be occurred due to frequent broadcasts among a lot of nodes at AODV routing used in Zigbee. In order to solve these problems, in this paper, we propose a novel protocol which has improved the restriction of depth by using a fixed address assignment method, and has enhanced the broadcast occurrence by devising a static routing method to a packet movement between floors. Regardless of entire network, additionally, this was to enable internal communication reliably by composing an independent PAN. Specially, in this paper, we implemented the proposed wireless protocol and proved stability and practicality through experiment appliances of control of devices established in a large building.

Choi, Eun-Suk ; Chung, Seung-Ho ; Kim, Dea-Yong ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 37~45
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.037
WEB or Internet has given mankind an unprecedented experience in indefinite sharing of online content by original means of digitalized information, but it comes to face an empirical issue of unreasonable informational superfluity as well as a practical issue of collapsed dot.com bubble economy in 2001. Instead, a latest networking concept called `WEB 2.0` or `Semantic WEB` becomes embodied as a new approach to entities such as end users and content. The concept of WEB 2.0 for creating a platform on the basis of openness and collaboration has made such a technological setting that we can effectively resolve and manage unreasonable data maintenance and interface inherent in Creative Group Thinking System (CGTS), a WEB-based computer-aided idea generation system developed in 2003. Concerning decreased usability and difficulties with data maintenance due to certain issues of CGTS as a part of WEB R&D platform, such as complex display composition and inefficient data processing system, this study seeks to simplify and streamline data structure by means of AJAX and DOM as WEB2.0-based technologies, and integrate interface structure of WEB platform to focus on end users, so that it can improve interface of conventional CGTS for the purpose of realizing end user`s participation through improving usability.

Yun, Ha-Na ; Lee, Hyung-Woo ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 46~58
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.046
The user valence of VoIP services with SIP protocol is increasing rapidly because of cheap communication cost and its conveniency. But attacker can easily modify the packet contents of SIP protocol as SIP header is transmitted by using UDP methods in text form. The reason is that SIP protocols does not provide an authentication function on the transmission session. Therefore, existing SIP protocol is very weak on SIP Packet Flooding attack etc. In order to solve like this kinds of SIP vulnerabilities, we used SIP status codes under the monitoring module for detecting SIP Flooding attacks and additionally proposed an advanced protocol where the authentication and security function is strengthened about SIP packet. We managed SIP session spontaneously in order to strengthen security with SIP authentication function and to solve the vulnerability of SIP protocol. The proposed mechanism can securely send SIP packet to solves the security vulnerability with minimum traffic transmission. Also service delay in SIP proxy servers will be minimized to solve the overload problem on SIP proxy server.

DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.059
Laboratory works for embedded system courses are usually performed with hardware based experimental kits that equipped with an embedded board and software development tools. Hardware-based kits have demerits such as high initial setup cost, burdensome maintenance, inadaptability to industry evolution, and restricted educational outcomes. This paper proposes using virtual experimental environments to overcome the demerits of hardware-based kits and describes the design and implementation of a simulation-based virtual experimental kit. With ARM`s ARMulator, we developed the kit by adding hardware IPs and user interface modules for peripherals. The developed kit is verified with an experimental program that uses all the augmented software modules. We also ported MicroC/OS-II on the virtual experimental kit for real-time OS experiments.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 68~77
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.068
In this paper, we propose a new log buffer management scheme considering the accessibility of the data. Our proposed scheme evaluates the worth of the merge of log blocks. It conducts the merge operations between infrequently updated data and the data blocks and postpones as much as possible the merge operations between frequently updated data and the data blocks. As a result, the proposed method prevents the unnecessary merge operations, reduces the number of the erase operations, and improves the utilization of the flash memory storage. In order to show the superiority of the proposed scheme, we compare it with BAST and FAST. It is shown through performance evaluation that the proposed method achieves about 25% and 65% performance improvements over BAST and FAST on average in terms of the number of the erase operations.

Cho, Moon-Haeng ; Lim, Jae-Seok ; Lee, Jin-Wook ; Kim, Joo-Man ; Lee, Cheol-Hoon ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 94~102
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.094
In recent years, embedded systems such as cellular phones, Portable Multimedia Player, intelligent appliance, automobile engine control are reshaping the way people live, work, and play. Thereby, services application to guarantee various requirements of users become increasingly sophisticated and complicated, such embedded computing platforms use real-time operating systems (RTOSs) with time determinism. These RTOSs must not only provide predictable services but must also be efficient and small in size. Kernel services should also be deterministic by specifying how long each service call will take to execute. Having this information allows the application designers to better plan their real-time application software so as not to miss the deadline of each task. In this paper, we present the complete generalized real-time scheduling algorithm using multi-dimensional methodology to determine the highest priority in the ready list with 2r levels of priorities in a constant time without additional memory overhead.

Kim, Nam-Jin ; Kim, In-Guk ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 103~113
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.103
The basic real-time scheduling algorithms based on RM or EDF approaches assume that the tasks are preemptive, but the tasks may contain nonpreemptive sections in many cases. Also the existing scheduling algorithm for reducing the power consumption of the processor is based on the task utilizations and determines the processor speed
according to the existence of the blocking intervals. In this algorithm, the
interval that operates in high speed is the interval during which the priority inversion by blocking occurs, and the length of this interval is set to the task deadline that includes the blocking intervals. In this paper, we propose an improved algorithm that can reduce the power consumption ratio by shortening the length of the
interval. The simulation shows that the power consumption ratio of the proposed algorithm is reduced as much as 13% compared to the existing one.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 147~159
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.147
The touch screen phone launched domestically in Korea, unlike the existing plane UI, it applied a cubic shape of 3D UI which provides three dimensional solid graphic. This study proposes to examine the correlation between the users` experience of 3D GUI, which were made by two different companies, and the brand. From this point of view, this study sets up a hypothesis about intimate correlation between individual differentiated brand and the user experience. Base on that, a model was designed. This study measured the satisfaction of user experience through the disclosure and non-disclosure of brand, focusing on 3D GUI cases which were launched so far, and it demonstrated that there was a clear difference in the degree of satisfaction. Through this examine, a brand was confirmed as one of the important element of user experience in using the 3D GUI that was launched competitively by companies. Therefore, the result of this study suggest that the designers need to establish strategies that make the brand as the core subject of design during the process of manufacturing product and service.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 192~201
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.192
This research deals with expressive definition of visual contents by using the distance between a subject and a screen resolution, and what changes affect the emotion of those looking at the expressive definition. A visual image captured from a HDTV screen was shown to the 61 students attending a university in the Busan area and SAM evaluation method was used to measure 3 different emotions such as pleasant, arousal, and dominance. While comparing different resolution, looking at high resolution contents rather than low resolution resulted in a direction of pleasant, arousal, and dominance. Also showing a different resolution than consistently showing the same resolution had a more volatile emotional effect. Aftermath multiple comparison resulted in a tendency for emotions to become unpleasant and un-arousal when high resolution contents were shown and then switched to a low resolution contents. There was no result of any significance in the control variables. Also on the aftermath multiple comparison on short, medium and long distance between the subject and the screen resolution, short distance had a bigger pleasant, arousal, and dominance emotional numbers than the rest. In a multiple variable verification result, a resolution and the distance of happiness and excitement showed a positive correlation.

DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.202
The purpose of this study is at clarifying what the genre oriented characteristics of virtual reality programs are. For this, the tests of `We Are Married` being broadcasted in `Sunday, Sunday Night` Part 1 of MBC from episode 1 to 8. As a result of analysis, this program was mixing together virtuality and reality by placing the image of virtual couple`s life and presentness of entertainers existing in reality appearing at the studio. Also, it was forming sympathy with users as it satisfies fantasy and sense of reality toward marriage by the entertainer couples showing love and conflict that may happen between real couples after setting various categories of couple types. Also, through the device for the public space to confess private feelings through television, it shows the boundary between public domain and private domain breaking up. Along with this, it has implemented amusement characteristics by inspiring enjoyment of users by a substituted satisfaction through various forms of impressions presented to spouse such as materials, effort, gesture or language, etc. Accordingly, the virtual reality program shows authenticity, fiction and amusement by being mixed together and we can see that such genre oriented characteristics act as important strategy appealing to users based on breakup of boundary and genre oriented ambiguity.

Adaptation and Deviation in the Films about Women Born in the Year of Horse
Seo, Kok-Suk ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 222~229
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.222
I study how the deviation of strong women clashes with patriarchism and the clash is represented in the films. Women of Spirit`s in 1960`s narrative deals with the generational conflicts and the older`s defeat, and that reflects the changes of the times. The narrative of Horse-year Bride in 1960`s deals with changes of housewives` status, deviation and return of the strong-willed women, and becoming `a wise mother and good wife`. The Daughter-in-Law Born in the Year of Horse in 1970`s has two meanings - rejecting the active women and reinforcing patriarchism. The narratives of these films mean the obedience to patriarchism and the punishment women for their activity. But, these films also show the pleasure of resistance by revealing the gap and the contradiction of patriarchism.

Lee, Ja-Hye ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 230~238
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.230
Since 1960, there has been growing recognition that the moving images reveal the `realistic illusion(L`illusion r
aliste)` rather than the reality itself and many theorists and film directors have tried to suggest the methodology to solve the problem of verisimilitude of the moving images. In this paper, we describe through the case analysis of the practical use of `off-screen space` as a methodology which actualize the reality in documentaries, by minimizing the `suture` effect which occurs the problem of verisimilitude, based on the theories of Bazin and Burch. We, consequently, believe that the application of the `off-screen space` could be one of the appropriate possibility for the successful representation of reality in documentaries.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 239~246
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.239
This research sees that even interactivities have differences by the types of internet shopping malls and compared and analyzed the interactivities by classifying them into open market and special malls. The research survey was conducted aiming at those who purchased products in Internet shopping malls within the latest 6 months, and, then, a statistical analysis was carried out. The analysis result showed the interactivity in internet shopping malls was deduced as 2 perspectives while it was confirmed that there are differences according to shopping mall types. For open markets, interactivities of both `between company and customers` and `between customers and customers` have significant influences on the satisfaction degree. Especially, the interactivity of `between company and customers` have higher influences on the satisfaction degree. However, for the specialty malls, it was shown that only the interactivity of `between company and customers` have significant influences on the customer satisfaction degree. Additionally, it was confirmed that the satisfaction degree toward a shopping mall has positive influence even on future recommendation intentions. Such research results confirmed that distinctive strategies which consider the patterns of shopping malls should be applied in order for a company to effectively utilize the interactivity in internet shopping mall markets.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 10, issue 1, 2010, Pages 267~274
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.267
A new awareness on design in economy and business domain has shifted the focus of design education from the description and presentation to the creativity. This contextual change raises new awareness on the importance of the design management training program. The goal of this research is to suggest a program of design management training program in Korean context. For the purpose, the history of design management activity is briefly reviewed. And then the curriculum between Korean design schools and design management schools abroad is reviewed. The result shows that the design management schools abroad emphasize leadership based on practicality and the program is also ran by School of Business Management. The curriculum consists of leadership program and creativity program. The leadership comprises individual, personal, and collaborative. The leadership takes the role of catalyst in the organization to draw a creativity and raise it. So both leadership and creativity are inseparable. The result of creativity, however, differ from one another based on individual`s capacity, procedure, and social context. Thus, it is important to develop a design management program which considers individual, social context, as well as economy and business domain.

DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.275
This research examines the relation of dissatisfaction about own real conditions, deviant labeling, self-esteem, abuse from parent, victimization and juvenile delinquency(smoking, drinking, run-away, assault, taking away stuffs or money, larceny). The evidence of a strong relation of these factors and girls` delinquency is well known through empirical researches by feminist criminologists. Feminist criminology had attention to the gender-specific factors that could explain girls` delinquency. Most of conventional delinquency theories, such as social bond theory, differential association theory, focused on bad boys` deviant behaviors. These theories has not been designed to apply to girls` troubles. According to the conclusion of the research, there seems to support researches of feministic perspectives.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome(CRPS) is a chronic neruopathic pain syndrome, most frequently encountered after trauma, nerve injury, fracture, cerebral vascular accident(CVA), spinal injury, and surgery to a limb, and affected by diverse factors such as disease process, intervention method, and other biopsychosocial components. Occupational therapy as a multidisciplinary treatment approach may be potentially useful when simultaneously targeting such biological, psychological, and social components. Biological treatment can focus on increasing functional use of extremity for promoting independence. Psychological intervention can include relaxation/biofeedback training and cognitive-behavioral treatments, and social approach can focus on recreational therapy and vocational rehabilitation. Occupational therapy will encourage functional restoration, pain management, and regaining of psychological components with collaboration between different disciplines.

As a result of comparing and analyzing the related legislation of each nation, more superior legislative systems should be made to cope with a number of terrors effectively. And also it is required to devise some concrete regulations such as the following in superior legislative systems. First, because it is hard to collect information on terrorism and watch over suspects according to Communication Privacy Protection Law. More in-depth discussion into the issue of surveillance is needed for the protection of lives and property, although public concerns of privacy are a valid point of contention. Second, it is necessary to take complementary measures on immigration as surveillance, since the current Immigration Control Law has restrictions in many ways to hinder efforts to root out terrorists. Third, under the current law on financial activities, it is impossible to block influx of terror financing. Therefore it is necessary to come up with ways of making the punishment procedures. Fourth, considering that convicted terrorists get punished under the standard procedures and precedents, it is required to clearly differentiate between what the terror acts are and what terrorist groups are. Fifth, it is necessary to make use of the private security system to enhance the security system of national facilities.

In this study, we consider a mid-and-long term technological forecasting method based on simulation technique. We, first, gather information about a point of appearance time of new technologies which will be developed in the future and influence relationship among those technologies by Delphi survey. And then we propose a simulation-based heuristic approach searching for the key technology among new technologies which will be developed to attain a normative objective using the Delphi data. We also provide the range of occurrence time for individual technology and define key technologies in this study in contrast that a expert`s estimate to occurrence time is only one point in traditional Delphi survey. The information for key technologies which are detected by this procedure gives priorities of R&D planning and aids the R&D planner or project manager in resource allocation.

DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2010.10.1.486
The purpose of this study is to investigate the research trends and the present conditions of real digital texts on "Visual Transformation." For the purpose of this study adopted two different methods: meta analysis and case study. The research trends on visual transformation of digital text were investigated through analyzing the total of 167 literature by means of synthetic meta analysis. Relevant literature was categorized into three types of research: functional, dynamic, and interactional transformation. The type of literature and research methods in each literature were analyzed. The present conditions of real digital texts on visual transformation were investigated by means of case study. The well designed 12 e-learning contents selected and analyzed in terms of the analysis framework which was drawn by the research trends. The results suggested problems as follows in designing e-learning contents. Firstly, there were some cases that did not follow the basic design principles related to typography. Secondly, the content was just provided in each learning steps without consideration of design to enhance text comprehension in many cases. Thirdly, web technology adequately was not applied to design e-learning contents.
