Effective Exemplar-Based Image Inpainting Using Patch Extrapolation
Kim, Jin-Ju ; Lee, Si-Woong ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 1~9
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.001
Image inpainting is the widely used technique to restore a damaged region or to fill a hole in an image. The exemplar-based technique effectively generates new texture by copying colour values of the most correlated patch in the source into the empty region of the current patch. In traditional exemplar-based synthesis, the patch correlation is computed using only the already filled pixels of the current patch. Thus, by ignoring the correlation between the hole regions of the two patches, an undesirable patch which is highly correlated with the current patch in the already filled area but considerably dissimilar in the area to be filled can be selected, which results in bad texture propagation. To avoid such problems, a new exemplar-based inpainting method using patch extrapolation is proposed. The empty part of the current patch is extrapolated beforehand, and then the complete patch is used for finding its exemplar. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides more natural synthesis results than the conventional ones.

As the standard of living and leisure time of contemporary people is increasing, people who have interest not only in physical health activities but also in mental health activities are increasing. Also, people who have interest in sports activities, which include entertaining factors are gradually increasing. SporTainment is a compound of the words `Sports` and `Entertainment` and it possesses the meaning of doing sports and entertainment simultaneously. In addition, in the immersive media technology field, researches, which increase the feeling of existence and immersion through the stimulation of the consumer`s emotional feedback technology, have been actively conducted. Such, emotional feedback technologies are based on fun and excitement and are activities, in which learning effects are included such as games, education, national defense etc. In addition, the emotional feedback technology is expanding in applied services, which maximize the feeling of existence and immersion of the consumers by adding reality effects in the virtual environment. In this research, the presence of the user was increased by developing a realistic bike simulation for the use of SporTainment, which combine emotional effects and reappearance devices in the bike simulation.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 19~27
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.019
The amount of personal information has increased dramatically due to the prevalent use of smartphones and the rapid growth of social networking services. Under these circumstances, there has been a lot of efforts to obtain new information based on the overflowing personal data. The conventional character analysis method, which heavily relies on personal surveys, had some limitations in that it was difficult for psychologist to have a complete access to the surveyed results. When it comes to celebrities, however, it is relatively easy to access to their information through various media. Therefore there has been various researches that examined celebrities` personalities. On the contrary, not many studies have focused on analyzing the characteristics of the general public whose information is not so accessible. In this research, we suggest a method to analyze ordinary people`s characteristics based on information available via their social networking services. This research focuses on developing a Facebook-native application, which examines the user`s character type based on the posts shared in the user`s Facebook page.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 28~38
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.028
For western music there has been a volume of researches on music information analysis for automatic transcription or content-based music retrieval. But it is hard to find the similar research on Korean traditional music. In this paper we propose several algorithms to automatically analyze the structure of Korean traditional music `Pansori`. The proposed algorithm automatically distinguishes between the `sound` part and `speech` part which are named `sori` and `aniri`, respectively, using the ratio of phonetic and pause time intervals. For rhythm called `jangdan` classification the algorithm makes the robust decision using the majority voting process based on template matching. Also an algorithm is suggested to detect the bar positions in the `sori` part based on Kalman filter. Every proposed algorithm in the paper works so well enough for the sample music sources of `Pansori` that the results may be used to automatically transcribe the `Pansori`.

DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.039
Fast advancement and dynamic diffusion of Smart device make big change to personal user. They have been extended from consumer only watching video to prosumer recording and sharing User Created Video(UCV). With this reason, as a platform for various kind of content service. Especially, UCVs for the purpose of sharing experience are recorded from same event on limited time and space by some people. These are also produced by various cameras that has each angle similar like broadcasting videos. In this paper, we present multi-view characteristic of UCV and propose Multi-view UCV service that is watching UCVs from same event through adjusting camera angle. Through user satisfaction survey, we knew that adjusting camera angle is preferred for watching UCV including overlapping part more than linear watching.

Meaning of Reality on Television -Focused on ＜THE WORLD AS PHANTOM AND AS MATRIX＞, of Guünter Anders-
Shin, Shang-Ki ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 60~71
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.060
Images of TV that crossed the reality & the virtual reality have been discussed for a long time, Then, With what feature can TV make messages of the reality & the virtual reality maintain to achieve such a target, and in which situation will the feature be exposed? One who answered first about these questions is a German critic, G
nter Anders. Anders called the reality confused with the reality and the confused world of the virtual reality Phantom, and thought human beings would live in the reproduced world created by media machine in the long run as a world that the Phantom created would be gloomy and confusing. The media, themselves, become images, and an image creates another image. Through this process, human beings became unaware of which image the reality was indeed. As TV often created these situations, we have been already seduced into the deep Phantom world before discussing right or wrong of the situation. Of course, the media reality & the reality can`t be strictly distinguished. Because the means that help to form judgement of viewers is the media. The subject of practical judgement is the media reality not human beings.
Comparative study on Focalization in Film from a Narratological Perspective
Kim, Jong-Wan ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 72~83
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.072
Film is a visual art. A process of film totally depends on our sense of sight. It indicates that a way of delivering narrative in the film is "showing", not "telling". There has already been established theories about "who sees" and "who tells" in narratology. It explains who the narrator is and how the narrator delivers in literary works which is represented in terms of "Point-of View". Therefore the study contents construct internal formal elements of the narrator and point of view into 2 individual researches, and the result can be summed up as below. From a narratological perspective, the narrator has roles and deeds as a narrative mediator who mediates the story and leads the story as presenting the origin with images and voices in the text extra and intra world through the process of producing the narrative inferred. To eliminate ambiguousness the term `point-of view`, this article applies `focalization` theory to analyze narrative structure of film. The result of analysis shows that there are three focalizers in film; director, protagonist-character and camera. And aspects of film can be varied by distance of each focalizer. These distances between focalizers limit amount of visual information.

DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.084
Comics uses words to convey its content and meaning, while the comic image conveys the content as a narrative function to represent how language is combined with the text. This paper makes a comparison and analysis of the comics
of Japan and South Korea, in terms of words and image expression, narrative techniques, and the way of communication, to study the characteristics of image narrative. The comic image of Jing ke is the other as a flow of narrative and getting rid of the current screen, to resonate with the readers. Go U-yeong`s comics and Sumeragi Natsuki`s set up a virtual narrative time and space through the line, surface, space and shade, to realize the reproduction of unhistorical facts and the significance of narrative with the artist`s imagination. Sumeragi Natsuki`s comics uses historical facts to represent exquisite narrative like still-life paintings. She focuses on the description of the objective facts of history, to seek the sensitive comic image beyond reality. The image narration of Go U-yeong`s comics is a clash between his historical narrative among the subjective romantic image and the readers` awareness narrative flow that they insist inside. Therefore, he tries to keep balance. The instant image in his comics is not a reproduction of the historical real moment, but a reproduction image of the reality reconstructed by his own pursuit of narrative.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 122~130
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.122
The purpose of this study is to explore the mediation effects of deficiency on executive function for male adolescents` game addiction and aggression. For this study, 120 male high school students in Chungnam areas were included in the analysis. The results showed that game addiction showed significant correlations with both deficiency on executive function and aggression. Adolescents addicted to games tended to exhibit higher aggression and more deficiency on executive function than adolescents without game addiction. Deficiency on executive function (mediator) partially mediated the influence of the adolescents` game addiction (independent variable) on aggression (dependent variable). Based on these results, it was suggested that self-instructional training would be helpful for game-addicted adolescents to enhance self-control. Finally, limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 131~145
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.131
This study is an empirical analysis on the relationship between social presence and online community users` continuance intention. Based on Bhattacherjee(2001)`s expectation-confirmation model (ECM) of IT continuance model, we test the influence of social presence on one`s intention to continue using online communities. This study sampled 132 online community users. Research hypotheses are tested using the structural equation modelling(SEM) approach. The results of this study demonstrate that user satisfaction is influenced by perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment. But, the confirmation of expectation did not affect user satisfaction. And, social presence has direct effects on perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment. Further, social presence has a positive effect on users` continuance intention through mediating effect of perceived usefulness. This study suggests that perceived usefulness should be taken into account when carrying out the operating strategy of online communities.

Yoon, Hong Keun ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 161~171
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.161
This research aims to analyze the characteristics of the channel brand components, identities in accordance with the organizational strategies of the programmes, and brand structures of the comprehensive programming channels. The channels promote themselves mobilizing a variety of channel brand components and, ecxept Channel A, JTBC, TV Chosun, and MBN coined its names which are reminiscent of their parents corporations. The organizational strategies of the programmes are related with the channel identities. TV Chosun, for instance, branded themselves as `conservative advocate` while focusing on news programs, and Channel A also takes conservative bias strategy focusing on the news programmes, especially after the 2012 presidential election. JTBC, however, organizes drama and entertainment programmes intensively being equivalent to that of terrestrial broadcasting programmes, and MBN positioned neutral and center with the news and cultural programmes. Referring to the brand architecture, which reveals the structural system of the brand, it is argued that TV Chosun and MBN take the integrated corporate brand strategy, while JTBC tries to mix and balance the brands of the parent corporation and its own independent one. Channel A, exceptionally, doesn`t take a name of its parent corporation `Dong-A`. In conclusion, it is argued that the comprehensive programming channels utilize and take the parent corporate brand, mixed brand, and independent brand in accordance with the brand power and circumstances of their own parent corporates.

Kim, Sang-Ki ; Kim, Yoo-Jin ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 181~191
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.181
In the past, making IR photography needed somewhat complicated process, so its application fields were limited. However, it has become easy to make IR photography with advanced digital technology, so it is expected that the fields of IR photography and existing limit due to difficult making process will be expanded. Therefore, in this study, it is decided that the need of IR standard chart which allows us to manage exposure and tone of IR photography for scientific purpose will increase. Two methods were used to make IR standard chart. First method is to use aluminum. When aluminum has oxide coating through anodic oxidation, it has high durability, corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Also, IR reflectance of aluminum can be controlled in some degree depending on the thickness of oxide coating. Second method is to use pigments. Yellow 10P150 pigment is used for the brightest patch. This pigment is appropriate in this study due to high heat resistance and IR reflectance. Carbon black is used for the darkest patch. Carbon black absorbs much IR, and its color is not faded by any source of light. IR reflectance is adjusted elaborately by mixing two pigments. Finally, 6 patches are selected with consideration for actual IR reflectance of patches. As a result, IR reflectance of random subjects can be known approximately and IR photographs can have appropriate contrast with the IR standard chart.

Gist-based message design is essential in the Internet in which a lot of health messages are created and shared constantly. This study intended to identify the characteristics of health messages in a webzine and explore a way to design gist-based health messages. A total of 72 webzine articles published in Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety were selected, and text and visual messages of the articles were analyzed in terms of content types, the frequency and position of gists, and intuitive expression. The articles were also categorized regarding the characteristics of health messages through cluster analyses. This study found that most texts of the health articles consisted of facts and methods, while most visual messages represented concepts. In addition, both text and visual messages had limitations in presenting a gist effectively. It was also necessary to explore an effective way to improve an intuitive understanding of jargon and quantitative information in health messages. Based on these findings, this study provided suggestions for the design of gist-based health messages in the Internet.

Yoon, Su-Kyung ; Kim, Myeong-Ji ; Choi, Jun-Ho ;
The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 205~222
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.205
This study analyzed the effects of interactivity on the learning attitude in the tablet PC-based digital textbook environment. Most of digital textbook studies focused on comparison of learning effect between digital textbook and paper textbook. This study, instead, focused on the interaction between students and digital textbook, and examined the hypothesis that, in the digital textbook-based learning environment, interactivity factors affect learning attitude. The results showed that active control, two-way communication, and synchronicity have significant effects on the learning attitude. Those findings indicate that it`s necessary to effectively realize interactivity in the process of developing digital textbooks. Also, important implication is not the fixed interactivity but how students perceive the digital textbook and make use of it. Therefore, for the interactive digital textbook, perceived user control, two-way communication, and synchronicity should be realized properly.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 294~307
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.294
The purpose of this study is to examine the trajectory of early adolescent aggression and to assess the effects of perceived family factors on it. This study investigated the changes in aggression over time and the effects of three family factors, parental attachment, parental monitoring, and family conflict, on the changes using multilevel modeling. The data from Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS) of fourth graders who were followed over five years were analyzed. The results indicated that there was a significant average increase followed by a slight decrease in aggression over time; that is, the data followed a quadratic trend. Parental attachment, parental monitoring, and family conflict had significant time-independent effects on aggression, while only family conflict had a significant time-dependent effect on aggression. These results imply that family factors need to be emphasized in planning prevention and intervention programs to reduce aggression during adolescence.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 457~466
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.457
During irradiation of lesions in cancer treatment with high energy electrons, normal tissue and critical organs are protected by the shielding material. Scattered radiation that generated the shielding materials affect the depth dose and atomic number. Therefore, we want to examine secondary particles and the scattered photons through calculation and its associated analysis, and compare the measurement for the aluminum, copper, and lead shielding substance of which thickness has 95% charge reduction. Dose change rate which effected scattering radiation was found to be +0.88% for material thickness, +0.43% for atomic number, and +19.70%, +15.20%, +12.40% for measurement, +25.00%, +15.10%, +13.70% for calculation on the aluminum, copper, and lead materials of which thickness has 95% charge reduction, respectively, As a result, we found that scattering rate was dependent on thickness than atomic number. In the dose increasing rate, scattered electrons are more important than scattered photon. For the above mentioned reasons, I think that high atomic number materials should be applied to reduce scattered radiation that generated with thickness effect.

Many kinds of carbon emission monitoring systems or integrated systems have been developed so far. However, despite of the development of related techniques, they tend to be lack of statistic processing functions for feedback and policy-making data for users. In this study, a new CEMS (Carbon Emission Monitoring System) has been suggested and implemented in Sejong City, Korea. This system adapted automatic remote reading system from the site management agency as data hub to collect the electricity, gas and water usage of each household. The CEMS is consisted of 6 parts; carbon emission measurement, carbon emission standard setup and management, statistic analysis and the incentives. CEMS is distinguished with other systems for its UIs for users and the administrators. Also, data sharing with urban information system(UIS) of local government to produce information for users and policy-makers. This system makes it possible to investigate the change of energy consumption patterns, especially depending on the family structure and the housing characteristics. Furthermore, analyzing their correlation with carbon emission, it is expected to provide basic data used to establish urban environmental policies.

Residential site should have pedestrian road passing through the center of the site just for convenience and safety. However, apartment complexes developed in the past, the sites are just stuck by walls and pedestrian roads are not placed, inhabitans have difficulties for facility use and safety. Therefore, residents solve the problems as follows: they utilize the spaces, between apartment building and the wall, as walking route, and demolish the parts of the wall for connecting sites. In this study, it was thought that pedestrian road could be emplaced at the wall space between sites. For this, a low-rise apartment complex in Gwangju was selected developed in 1990s, and whether the space for pedestrian road was examined. The width from 2.4m to 8.0m could be secured, and there could be placed the pedestrian road at the wall space. However, this study is limited for the possibility of securing space, for the opinion of residents that might be damaged from the pedestrian road did not reviewed.

The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, volume 14, issue 2, 2014, Pages 527~534
DOI : 10.5392/JKCA.2014.14.02.527
Motivated by the fact that English grapheme
is realized as 5 different English vowels [ɑ, eɪ, æ, ɔ, ə], the present study aims to investigate how Korean students perceive and produce English grapheme
in words. To this end, 31 university students participated in the perception and production tests on 28 English words containing grapheme
. Overall, the participants performed better on production than perception both in the pretest and posttest. Also, the accuracy of perception and production was improved in the posttest. While the accuracy rates of [ɑ] and [eɪ] were among highest in the perception test, those of [ɑ] and [ɔ] were in the production test. By contrast, the accuracy of unstressed [ə] was worst both in perception and production. As for the training effect, [eɪ] and [æ] showed significant improvement both in perception and production. In addition, the perception and the production of [ɔ] were improved at the .051-4 significance level. However, the accuracies of [ɑ] improved significantly neither in perception nor in production. In the case of [ə], the production ability was improved significantly whereas the perception ability was not. The prominent error patterns of
were the replacement of the target vowels with [æ], [ɑ], or [eɪ]. The influence of orthography was attested through the persistent occurrence of [ɑ]. Finally, pedagogical implications were discussed.
