B-spline Curve Approximation Based on Adaptive Selection of Dominant Points

This paper addresses B-spline curve approximation of a set of ordered points to a specified toterance. The important issue in this problem is to reduce the number of control points while keeping the desired accuracy in the resulting B-spline curve. In this paper we propose a new method for error-bounded B-spline curve approximation based on adaptive selection of dominant points. The method first selects from the given points initial dominant points that govern the overall shape of the point set. It then computes a knot vector using the dominant points and performs B-spline curve fitting to all the given points. If the fitted B-spline curve cannot approximate the points within the tolerance, the method selects more points as dominant points and repeats the curve fitting process. The knots are determined in each step by averaging the parameters of the dominant points. The resulting curve is a piecewise B-spline curve of order (degree+1) p with
continuity at each knot. The shape index of a point set is introduced to facilitate the dominant point selection during the iterative curve fitting process. Compared with previous methods for error-bounded B-spline curve approximation, the proposed method requires much less control points to approximate the given point set with the desired shape fidelity. Some experimental results demonstrate its usefulness and quality.
Simulation Modeling Methodology and Simulation System Architecture for Shipbuilding Processes

For several years, a research about the simulation for shipyard and shipbuilding has been performed. This research is based on the concept of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and DM (Digital Manufacturing). Global leading companies and research center are trying to get a good position of PLM, especially M&S field. Digital shipbuilding is to computerize shipyard facilities and shipbuilding processes, and to simulate expected scenarios of shipbuilding processes using a computer model in order to resolve a potential problem such as a bottleneck processes, and over loaded resources. In this paper, simulation methodology for shipbuilding is described. In addition, a local and global strategy for the use of simulation methodology is suggested. Finally, case studies about an indoor shop and an outdoor shop are described.
Pencil Curve Computation for Clean-up Machining

This paper presents a procedure to compute pencil curves from a triangular mesh which is offset with the radius of a given ball-end mill. An offset triangular mesh has numerous self-intersections caused by an abundance of invalid triangles, which do not contribute to the valid CL-surface. Conceptually, we can obtain valid pencil curves by combining all intersections tying on the outer skin of the offset triangular mesh, i.e., the valid CL-surface. The underlying concept of the proposed algorithm is that visible intersections are always valid for pencil curves, because visible intersections lie on the outer skin of the offset model. To obtain the visibility of intersections efficiently, the proposed algorithm uses a graphics board, which performs hidden surface removal on up to a million polygons per second.
An OSI and SN Based Persistent Naming Approach for Parametric CAD Model Exchange

The exchange of parameterized feature-based CAD models is important for product data sharing among different organizations and automation systems. The role of feature-based modeling is to gonerate the shape of product and capture design intends In a CAD system. A feature is generated by referring to topological entities in a solid. Identifying referenced topological entities of a feature is essential for exchanging feature-based CAD models through a neutral format. If the CAD data contains the modification history in addition to the construction history, a matching mechanism is also required to find the same entity in the new model (post-edit model) corresponding to the entity in the old model (preedit model). This problem is known as the persistent naming problem. There are additional problems arising from the exchange of parameterized feature-based CAD models. Authors have analyzed previous studies with regard to persistent naming and characteristics for the exchange of parameterized feature-based CAD models, and propose a solution to the persistent naming problem. This solution is comprised of two parts: (a) naming of topological entities based on the object spore information (OSI) and secondary name (SN); and (b) name matching under the proposed naming.
Automatic Generation of Hexahedral Meshes in Shell Structures

This paper describes hexahedral mesh generation for various shell structures, such as automobile bodies, plastic injection mold components and sheet metal parts by using chordal surfaces. After generaling one-layered tetrahedral mesh by an advancing front algorithm, the chordal surfaces are constructed by cutting of tetrahedral elements. Since the choral surfaces are composed of tri/quad elements with poor quality, they are transformed into quadrilateral elements with good quality. Hexahedral elements are then generated by offsetting these quadrilateral elements. The boundary nodes of hexahedral elements are generated on the outer surfaces of the original shell structures. Sample models including nonuniform thickness have been tested to validate the proposed algorithm.
Development of Modeling Support System for Lower Arm in Automobile Suspension Module

In this study, the modeling support system was developed which can make easy and fast FE-modeling and verify the results of static and durability analysis for the lower arm, one of the important parts in automobile suspension module. It took into account of the whole complicated design processes verifying the durability coefficients evaluated by fatigue analysis, which should be used to satisfy a design criteria. To guide the FE-modeling the drive page was constructed by using HTML and XML, which was based on expert's know-hows. It is able to integrate the processes to design the lower arm in practice, so that the standardization of its FE-Modeling is achieved, consequently. The 3 dimensional CAD's geometrical data were changed automatically into pre-defined shell elements under the concept of mesh-offset technique, and then welding elements were treated to connect between target and basic surfaces constructed by the shell elements. This system has also a user interface to control boundary and load ing conditions applied in performing of the static and durability analysis, in which many load cases can be applied simply with the MPCs driven by just few mouse clicks. These were implemented on the platform of MSC.Patran and utilized ANSYS, MSC.Nastran and MSC.Fatigue as the solver of the analysis performed. The developed system brings not only significant decreasing of man-hours required in FE-modeling process, but also obtaining of satisfied qualities in analyzed results. It will be integrated in a part of virtual prototyping module of the developing e-engineering framework.
XTM based Knowledge Exchanges for Product Configuration Modeling

Modeling product configurations needs large amounts of knowledge about technical and marketing restrictions on the product. Previous attempts to automate product configurations concentrate on representations and management of the knowledge for specific domains in fixed and isolated computing environments. Since the knowledge about product configurations is subject to continuous change and hard to express, these attempts often failed to efficiently manage and exchange the knowledge in collaborative product development. In this paper, XML Topic Map (XTM) is introduced to represent and exchange the knowledge about product configurations in collaborative product development. A product configuration model based on XTM along with its merger and inference facilities enables configuration engineers In collaborative product development to manage and exchange their knowledge efficiently. An implementation of the proposed product configuration model is presented to demonstrate that the proposed approach enables enterprises to exchange the knowledge about product configurations during their collaborative product development.
Development of Design Catalogue to Reduce the Design Period for Recycling

Today the tastes of consumers change rapidly and the kinds of the products become diverse. There- fore the product life cycle becomes shorter and shorter. Moreover the save of resources and the recycling for the environmental preservation are the essential theme. On this the necessary information for the product development increases enormously. For the right use of the information the design process should be supported by the proper design tool. For this the 'design catalogue system for recycling' is suggested here. This system consists of four parts. that is, 'the existing automobile system database', 'welting principle database', 'Assessment system of the ease of disassembly' and 'one's own product development ratabase'. By the use of this system the product development period could be reduced about 30% drastically.
