AR-based Tangible Interaction Using a Finger Fixture for Digital Handheld Products

In this paper, we propose an AR-based tangible interaction using a finger fixture for virtual evaluation of digital handheld products. To realize tangible interaction between a user and a product in a computer-vision based AR environment, we uses two types of tangible objects: a product-type object and a finger fixture. The product-type object is used to acquire the position and orientation of the product, and the finger fixture is used to recognize the position of a finger tip. The two objects are fabricated by RP technology and AR markers are attached to them. The finger fixture is designed to satisfy various requirements with an ultimate goal that the user holding the finger fixture in his or her index finger can create HMI events by touching specified regions (buttons or sliders) of the product-type object with the finger tip. By assessing the accuracy of the proposed interaction, we have found that it can be applied to a wide variety of digital handheld products whose button size is not less than 6 mm. After performing the design evaluation of several handheld products using the proposed AR-based tangible interaction, we received highly encouraging feedback from users since the proposed interaction is intuitive and tangible enough to provide a feeling like manipulating products with human hands.
A 3D Foot Scanner Using Mirrors and Single Camera

A structured beam laser is often used to scan object and make 3D model. Multiple cameras are inevitable to see occluded areas, which is the main reason of the high price of the scanner. In this paper, a low cost 3D foot scanner is developed using one camera and two mirrors. The camera and two mirrors are located below and above the foot, respectively. Occluded area, which is the top of the foot, is reflected by the mirrors. Then the camera measures 3D point data of the bottom and top of the foot at the same time. Then, the whole foot model is reconstructed after symmetrical transformation of the data reflected by mirrors. The reliability of the scan data depends on the accuracy of the parameters between the camera and the laser. A calibration method is also proposed and verified by experiments. The results of the experiments show that the worst errors of the system are 2 mm along x, y, and z directions.
Feature-based Similarity Assessment for Re-using CAD Models

Similarity assessment of a CAD model is one of important issues from the aspect of model re-using. In real practice, many new mechanical parts are designed by modifying existing ones. The reuse of part enables to save design time and efforts for the designers. Design time would be further reduced if there were an efficient way to search for existing similar designs. This paper proposes an efficient algorithm of similarity assessment for mechanical part model with design history embedded within the CAD model. Since it is possible to retrieve the design history and detailed-feature information using CAD API, we can obtain an accurate and reliable assessment result. For our purpose, our assessment algorithm can be divided by two: (1) we select suitable parts by comparing MSG (Model Signature Graph) extracted from a base feature of the required model; (2) detailed-features' similarities are assessed with their own attributes and reference structures. In addition, we also propose a indexing method for managing a model database in the last part of this article.
Development Strategies of Sustainable PSS in Manufacturing

Product-service system (PSS) is a system of products and service, supporting networks and infrastructure that is designed to be competitive. PSSs satisfy customers' needs more effectively and have a lower environmental impact than traditional business models. Therefore, many companies and governmental institutes are eager to implement the PSSs as a new business model. In this paper, we focus on industrial practices as new business models for the company. PSS, especially, is popular in electronic industry, so one can often observe such examples as iPod, iPhone, e-Book and etc in the field. We first thoroughly investigate the current practices of PSS in Korean electronic industry. The examples are surveyed and projected directions are given. Then, non-electronic PSSs are surveyed. Especially mechanical PSSs are intensively discussed. Based on the survey results, we propose several major development strategies of Sustainable PSS (SPSS). SPSS will bring a competitive edge for company as realization of sustainable development of PSS considering economy, society, and environment.
An Implementation Enterprise BOM for Marine Vessel of Pipe Equipment

Both enterprise information systems and CAD utilizes the BOM (Bill of Material) as the means of collaborative integration during the product design and production since the BOM has been commonly used for design, production planning, procurement, and production works. Therefore, BOM can be the referential data when it expresses not only the part lists but also product information required by product development process. Outfitting design is one of major design works in marine vessel design since marine vessels have various outfitting systems and huge number of parts. Also, the outfitting BOM has the evolutional forms that change from the initial design to the production design. In order to express the product information and part list in the enterprise BOM and the evolutional BOMs in each lifecycle, enterprise BOM of outfitting that consists of structure BOM and display BOM is suggested. Thereafter, we have developed the prototype of enterprise BOM in which some features of the outfitting BOM are implemented.
Development of a Compressor Design System Using Configuration Design Method

In this research, we developed a design system for a compressor of an air conditioner using solid CAD system. The developed design system has some characteristics. First, the design system used a configuration design method, so a designer can design a compressor very quickly by using the constructed master libraries. Next, the system was developed to be used not only by engineers but also by salesmen. It is very easy for a user to use it, so a salesman can get a result very easily with the design system. And it has some design modules which give a considerable convenience to designers. Actually, designers are accustomed to the module based design. Then, it has calculation and analysis functions. Volume and mass of a part, and interference between parts are calculated by using the geometric calculation function of a solid CAD system. Also a packaging calculation was implemented to get the smallest space to package compressors for transportation and storing. An interface with a program to analyze the vibration of a compressor was developed in this design system. The design system is similar to CBD (Case-Based Design) system in the view of the whole design process.
Cost Improvement for a Bus Painting Shop by Introducing a Color Selection Field

As the customer's needs for diverse colors, the process of bus painting shop is becoming more and more complex. In particular, frequent changes of paint colors in each spray process require the cleaning of the painting nozzles and setting them up for the new paints, which results in increased time and cost and reduced production. This also increases environmental influences. This paper proposes, as a solution to this issue, the use of color selection field (CSF). CSF is physically a system of conveyors that are used to rearrange objects in a flow line. CSF is proposed, in this paper, to be introduced right before the spray process so that buses are better grouped according to their desired colors. Various parameters of the CSF, such as the number of conveyors and algorithms to determine the rearranged sequence of buses, have been determined by running simulations using the digital manufacturing technology, and investigating the simulation results. As an outcome of the proposed solution, the CSF system is expected to reduce approximately 30% of the nozzle cleaning cost for a Korean motor company case, which will not only benefit the company economically, but will also benefit the environment.
A Study on the Introduction for the International IFD Standard to Implement Open BIM

This study aims to study IFD based IFC application, and API technology were examined for extending
information by using IFD libraries. According to this, information exchange scenarios for Open BIM were established with IFD application. And necessary standard elements for introduction of IFD were introduced and the templates of object and property information were suggested for realization.
