Swept Volumes Generated by Polyhedral Objects Through Screw Motions

Swept volumes have been used in a wide variety of applications, and the literature contains much discussion of methods for computing the swept volumes in many situations. However, the commercially available CAD systems do not support the operations of generating the swept volumes enough to satisfy a variety of users' needs. In this paper, we present a new, simple and efficient algorithm for computing the swept volume of moving a polyhedron in 3-D region. The screw motion is used to describe the sweep motion of a polyhedron, because of its simplicity and computational advantages. The boundary of a swept volume is the result of combining the envelope surfaces and the partial boundaries at the initial and final position of a polyhedron. Some portions of these boundaries are inside the swept volume. We develop the algorithm to remove these interior portions. Then, to implement our algorithm, it is performed to integrate our program with the commercial CAD software, CATIA.
A Z-map Update Method for Linearly Moving tools

In numerically controlled(NC) machining simulation, a Z-map has been used frequently for representing a workpiece. Since the Z-map is usually represented by a set of Z-axis aligned vectors, the machining process can be simulated through calculating the intersection points between the vectors and the surface swept by a machining tool. In this paper, we present an efficient method to calculate those intersection points when an APT-type tool moves along a linear tool path. Each of the intersection points can be expressed as the solution of a system of non-linear equations. We transform this system of equations into a single-variable equation, and calculate the candidate interval in which the unique solution exists. We prove the existence of a solution and its uniqueness in this candidate interval. Based on these characteristics, we can effectively apply numerical methods to finally calculate the solution of the non-linear equations within a given precision. The whole process of NC simulation can be achieved by updating the Z-map properly. Our method can provide more accurate results with a little more processing time, in comparison with the previous closed-form solution.
Computer-Aided System for Bonnet tool Design Using Relation Rules

This paper explores the applications of feature-based representation and design in the area of design for manufacturing to incorporate the tooling and process considerations into the early stages of bonnet tool design. The goal of this research is apply the concepts of feature-based design and to development an interactive design tool using relations and arrive at optimal design for the given process conditions. This paper illustrates the development of a tool design aided system that was constructed using these concepts and applied to designing bonnet sheet metal parts.
A Hybrid Parametric Translator Using the Feature Tree and the Macro File

Most commercial CAD systems provide parametric modeling functions, and by using these capabilities designers can edit a CAD model in order to create design variants. It is necessary to transfer parametric information during a CAD model exchange to modify the model inside the receiving system. However, it is not possible to exchange parametric information of CAD models based on the cur-rent version of STEP. The designer intents which are contained in the parametric information can be lost during the STEP transfer of CAD models. This paper introduces a hybrid CAB model translator, which also uses the feature tree of commercial CAD systems in addition to the macro file to allow transfer of parametric information. The macro-parametric approach is to exchange CAD models by using the macro file, which contains the history of user commands. To exchange CAD models using the macro-parametric approach, the modeling commands of several commercial CAD systems are analyzed. Those commands are classified and a set of standard modeling commands has been defined. As a neutral fie format, a set of standard modeling commands has been defined. Mapping relations between the standard modeling commands set and the native modeling commands set of commercial CAD systems are defined. The scope of the current version is limited to parts modeling and assemblies are excluded.
Development of Delaunay Triangulation Algorithm Using Subdivision

Delaunay triangulation is well balanced in the sense that the triangles tend toward equiangularity. And so, Delaunay triangulation hasn't some slivers triangle. It's commonly used in various field of CAD applications, such as reverse engineering, shape reconstruction, solid modeling and volume rendering. For Example, In this paper, an improved Delaunay triangulation is proposed in 2-dimensions. The suggested algorithm subdivides a uniform grids into sub-quad grids, and so efficient where points are nonuniform distribution. To get the mate from quad-subdivision algorithm, the area where triangulation-patch will be most likely created should be searched first.
A Study on Geometric Modeling and Generation of 4-axis NC Data for Single Setup of Small Marine Propeller

Small marine propeller is generally machined by 5-axis machining. This paper suggests a method to create geometric model from point array data and 4-axis machining NC data for propeller. With conventional method, the setting posture should be changed, because propeller has front and back surface of wing. The change of setting posture has a bad influence on precision of propeller. So this paper pro-poses a method to machine propeller by single setup for 4-axis machining. The cutter moves to parallel direction of the XY plane. To determine the cutter orientation efficiently, the' tilting guiding line' is proposed. A proposed algorithm is written in C language and successfully applied to the 5-axis milling machine of industrial field.
Efficient Octree Encoding for Real-Time Transmission of 3D Geometric Data through Internet

Octree representation has the advantage of being able to represent complex shapes approximately through the repetition of simple primitive shapes. Due to this reason, octree representation together with VRML(Virtual Reality Modelling Language) is usually used for approximating 3D shapes. Since the data size of octree representation increases rapidly as 3D shape to be represented is more and more complicated, its transmission time also increase. In this paper, provided is the new octree representation and encoding/decoding scheme for real-time transmission through the internet in order to visualize 3D geometric data of large size approximately.
Interactive Control of Geometric Shape Morphing based on Minkowski Sum

Geometric shape morphing is an interesting geometric operation that interpolates two geometric shapes to generate in-betweens. It is well known that Minkowski operations can be used to test and build collision-free motion paths and to modify shapes in digital image processing. In this paper, we present a new geometric modeling technique to control the morphing on geometric shapes based on Minkowski sum. The basic idea develops from the linear interpolation on two geometric shapes where the traditional algebraic sum is replaced by Minkowski sum. We extend this scheme into a Bezier-like control structure with multiple control shapes, which enables the interactive control over the intermediate shapes during the morphing sequence as in the traditional CAGD curve/surface editing. Moreover, we apply the theory of blossoming to our control structure, whereby our control structure becomes even more flexible and general. In this paper, we present mathematical models of control structure, their properties, and computational issues with examples.
