A study on factors affecting the oral health promotion behavior of dental hygiene students and nonhealth-related majors in Gwangju

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of oral health behavior factors to oral health promotion behavior in dental hygiene students and nonhealth-related majors, to identify factors affecting their oral health promotion behavior and ultimately to provide information on the oral health promotion of college students and behavioral factors related to that. Methods : The subjects in this study were three-year-course dental hygiene students and two-year-course nonhealth-related majors in G college located in the city of Gwangju. A self-administered survey was conducted for 11 days from September 9 to 19, 2009, and the answer sheets from 473 respondents were analyzed. To look for connections between their major and the characteristics of their oral health promotion behavior, t-test was utilized, and t-test and one-way ANOVA were carried out to find out the relationship oral health promotion behavior by general characteristics. Besides, multiple regression analysis was employed to grasp factors affecting oral health promotion behavior. Results : Among the subfactors of oral health promotion behavior, the dental hygiene students statistically significantly outdid the nonhealth-related majors in thorough post-meal toothbrushing(p<0.01), toothbrushing method(p<0.001), use of fluorine-containing dentifrice(p<0.001) and good nutrition(p<0.05). But the latter statistically significantly outperformed the former in use of fluorine-containing rinse(p<0.001) and limited sugar intake(0<0.05). Regarding variables affecting oral health promotion behavior, the age group, whether to get a dental checkup over the last year and whether to use oral hygiene supplies were identified as the variables to impact on oral health promotion behavior. Specifically, the age group(dental hygiene students) and the get a dental checkup over the last year(nonhealth-related majors) had a greater impact. Conclusions : To promote the oral health of college students, comprehensive oral health education should be provided, which covers the importance of dental checkup, recommendation for the use of oral hygiene supplies, etc. Specifically, oral health education should be offered as one of general education courses in order for nonhealth-related majors to get into sound life habits and improve their oral health promotion behavior. To make it happen, required institutional measures should be taken.
A Study on actual smoking condition, knowledge, attitude and practice related to dental health of korean soldiers

Objectives : The study examined the correlation the between smoking and the actual smoking condition, knowledge, attitude and practice on the dental health of korean soldiers. Methods: The data was collected from a questionnaire given to 301 soldiers at two separate units in Kangwon-DO. Results : Soldiers dependance on nicotine according to the smoking frequence showed positive correlation(p<0.001). The respondents who had bad breath and bleeding gum had smoked for a relative correlation with how long they had smoked. Among the content of the dental health care program that respondents wished to undergo, dental whitening was the most attractive topic(37.9%) and decayed teeth was the most important part in dental health care(25.2%). The correlation coefficient between the dependancy on nicotine the less effort they made to improve their dental health(p<.05). Conclusion : The study suggest that antismoking campaigns should be include in military dental health care programs. Furthermore, the development of dental health care programs considering the needs of each military unit is basic for practice on dental health care between Korean soldiers.
Effect of infection control practice on exposure prevention of dental hygienist

Objectives : In the field of dental hygiene, infections pose a serious problem. This issue has left many patients and dental staff exposed to microbes with potentially far-reaching effects. The purpose of this study was to find solutions which could improve Dental health policies and promote improved methods for the control of infections. This survey was conducted between March 3, 2008 and March 30, 2008, in the metropolitan area. The research was carried out in dental clinics and dental hygienists were surveyed through a questionnaire. Methods : Collected data was examined using the SPSS 14.0 program, using frequency, mean and standard deviation analysis, T-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test and Duncan's test. . The perception of the importance of infection control is higher among dental hygienists than dentists. Of the dental hygienists surveyed, 83.9% were exposed to at least one accident while at work. Age and years of experience were important in relation to infection control practices. The rate of infections and the number of accidents experienced related to the dental hygienists performance of infection control. The performance of infection control is influenced by the dental hygienists own perceptions, and the perceptions of their dentists. The dental hygienist's working conditions and their beliefs related to infection control were shown to influence their performance of infection control practices. Conclusion : At the conclusion of this investigation, it was determined that systematic refresher training of infection control should be delivered through further education and various media. Dental health care workers should be encouraged to practice these action items presented in the training. For successful implementation of infection control in every dental health-care setting, it is highly demanded that effective safe-guard tools, strategic support and standardized action items against infection problems are developed.
A study on the health behavior and oral health management of adults in Gumi

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate attitudes toward and practice of oral health management among adults in the Gumi area. Health behavior especially drinking and smoking have been proven to affect the tissues around the teeth and increasing in importance. Thus the study set out to examine oral management according to drinking and smoking to suggest a need for education about oral health and provide basic data for oral health education. Methods : Total 226 subjects, who consist of 141 male adults and 85 female adults, in Gumi were asked to fill out a self-administered questionnaire on October 24, 2009. Their answers to the items about general characteristics, health behavior, and oral health behavior were analyzed with the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Results : 1. As for the frequency of visiting a dental clinic(hospital) for the last year, the non-movement group recorded higher frequency than the movement group, and the drinking group also did than the non-drinking group(p<0.05). 2. As for the experience and frequency of scaling, the female subjects were higher in the experience and frequency of scaling than their male counterparts. The older they got, the more they tended to have scaling. The married respondents had more experiences of scaling than the singles, and the non-drinking group was high in the experience of scaling(p<0.05). 3. As for the number, time, and method of toothbrushing a day, more women answered they brushed teeth three times or more per day than men; those who were in their forties were the highest in terms of the roll method, and those who were in their twenties were the highest in terms of toothbrushing time. The married group and the non-smoking group answered they brushed teeth in the roll method three times or more per day in higher percentage. And the non-drinking group was high in the roll method, which was statistically significant(p<0.05). 4. As for use and kinds of auxiliary oral hygiene devices, the female respondents used them more than their male counterparts. The older they became, the more they used them. The married group, the non-smoking group, and the non-drinking group used such devices a lot. The smoking group used dental floss most, and the non-smoking group used more kinds of such devices than the smoking group, which was statistically significant(p<0.05). Conclusion : Oral diseases can be prevented by adopting healthy and right oral management behavior. Using the findings of the study, more diverse programs about actual oral health education should be activated so that people can change their bad oral management and behavior and develop a habit of the right oral management attitude.
A study on a survey of recognition level of oral health in elementary-school teachers in Jinhae city

Objectives : It surveyed the recognition level of oral health in class teachers who have influence of students' oral health knowledges and behaviors in our country, developed a program available for supplementing reinforcement in school oral health education, and planned the knowledge contents necessary for school oral health education hereafter. Methods : To arrange the basic data necessary for school oral health program, it carried out questionnaire survey by personal self-administration targeting 460 teachers for 19 elementary schools where are located in Jinhae city from May 7, 2007 to June 13. The following conclusions were obtained. Results : 1. The path of acquiring oral health knowledge was shown the high frequency with 23.9% and 23.3%, respectively, through publicity brochure and dental clinic. As for the opinion about the aim of maintaining dental hygiene, the prevention of dental caries was the highest with 53.7%. 2. The opinion about which the regular visit to the dentist is very effective for preventing dental caries accounted for 56.7%. The opinions about which the limit to sugar intake and the use of dental floss are effective for preventing dental caries accounted for 52.2% and 46.3%, respectively. 3. The opinion about which the fluoridation beverage intake and the sealant are effective for preventing dental caries accounted for 33.9% and 33.0%, respectively. 4. The opinion about which the regular toothbrushing without toothpaste has a little effect and has no effect on preventing dental caries accounted for 42.6% and 38.5%, respectively. Conclusions : The elementary-school age period, which is the most core field out of the whole oral health, is the important period that is formed the basis of lifelong oral health care. It surveyed the recognition level of oral health in class teachers who are in charge of direct health care while making continuous life with students, and developed program available for supplementing reinforcement in school oral health education. Through this, there will be necessity for cultivating ability available for properly managing oral health for the whole life by allowing elementary-school students, who will be led to future adults' oral health, to be formed the attitudes toward the rationally oral health care.
Impact of the empowerment of dental personnels

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to verify the impact of the empowerment of dental personnels as one of variables affecting the performance of dental institutions and to seek ways of boosting their organizational productivity. Methods : The subjects in this study were dental personnels who worked in dental institutions. After three investigators were trained, a pilot survey was conducted from October 20 to November 20, 2009, and the questionnaire used in the pilot survey was finalized. The collected data were analyzed with a SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 12.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows: Results: 1. The dental personnels investigated got 3.98 in meaningfulness, one of the empowerment factors. They found a meaning in their job when they performed it. 2. The dental personnels who were older were more excellent in self- determination and influence, and age made a significant difference to their empowerment. 3. The dental personnels who were better educated were more superior in terms of empowerment, and academic credential made a significant difference to their empowerment factors was statistically. 4. The dental personnels whose yearly salary was larger were more which were the factors of empowerment of each factor was statistically significant. 5. Dental health agency workers less than three years accounted for most of 152 people were working longer duration of empowerment as a whole was that each of the factor scores. Empowerment of each factor was statistically significant. 6. The dental hygienists made up the largest group among the dental institution employees, and the kind of occupation made a significant difference to meaningfulness, competency and influence, which were the factors of empowerment. 7. The greatest group of the dental personnels worked in dental clinics, and the dental hospital employees surpassed the dental clinic employees in competency, self-determination and influence. There was a significant difference in the influence factor according to the type of dental institutions. Conclusions : Thus, the dental personnels were more aware of the meaningfulness factor when their perception of the job-related empowerment was checked, and it indicated that most of them attached importance to meaningfulness during their job performance. But just employees who worked in dental institutions located in particular regions were examined, the findings might not be generalizable. In the future, more extensive research should be implemented, and the sorts of programs that could stir up empowerment among dental institution employees or bolster organizational empowerment should be developed.
Effect of dental plaque removal and preference about D.I.Y dentifrices

Objectives : Since the program about sodium lauryl sulfate that might cause oral dryness and taste change including oral tissue allergy was on the air, the ingredients of D.I.Y dentifrices without sodium lauryl sulfate have been sold in online shopping mall and ordinary people can make the dentifrices easily. But there have not been any reports about the effect of dental plaque removal and preference about D.I.Y dentifrices. Therefore, this study was designed as a pilot study which aimed to investigate the effect of dental plaque removal and prefernece about D.I.Y dentifrices. Methods : 6 subjects were collected to test the effect of dental plaque removal with D.I.Y dentifrices with written consent. They didn't brushed the teeth during 12 hours until the check-up time on the next day. The O'leary index was calculated in baseline, 1 minute, 2 minute, 3 minute after brusing with D.I.Y dentifrices and market dentifrices. The preference about D.I.Y dentifrices through self-administered questionnaire was surveyed in 51 subjects after using D.I.Y dentifrices. Results : 1. The market dentifrices could remove larger amount of dental plaque than D.I.Y dentifrices, but, it wasn't significant. 2. In feeling refreshment, the market dentifrices had more positive answers significantly. 3. In feeling taste change, the market dentifries had more duration of taste change significantly. 4. In feeling oral dryness, the market dentifrices had more duration of oral dryness after toothbrushing. but, it wasn't significant. 5. As a result about reviewing the dental journals about ingredients of D.I.Y dentirices, green tea, sodium carbonate, bamboo salt, propolis had each evidence. But, We could not find out the evidences of calculus adhesion by corn starch, preservative by napri, disinfectant of peppermint. Conclusions : Although we cannot find the difference of the effect of dental plaque removal between D.I.Y dentifrices and market dentifrices, and D.I.Y dentifrices have the merits of decrease of oral dryness and taste change, it was suggested to have another test about stability and safety of D.I.Y dentifrices for safety of the user of D.I.Y dentifrices.
Some areas of oral health status of pregnant women

Objective : The study area in July 2009 Jeonbuk Obstetrics 172 people visited the patient's oral health care for expectant mothers who need to learn studied. Dental office understands the importance in the oral health of pregnant women, maintain oral health education to promote oral health and dental hygienist, used as basic data to suggest the direction of the business is. Methods: For data analysis SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science Version 12.0) program by using the analysis obtained the following conclusions; Results : 1. 3-29 from 25-year-old pregnant woman with morning sickness is usually the most reported high was 62.3%, severe 22.6%, 13.2% have had appeared in order, the difference was statistically significant. 2. The number of children and experience during pregnancy due to oral symptoms were all statistically significant differences. 3. The oral administration to pregnant women about the experience of education 13.4% had never received an answer was education, maternal age and under the number of children oral administration of the educational experience in ways that showed a statistically significant difference. 4. Last three months of pregnancy is three months pregnant 19.8% were used for dental medical. And, by visiting the regular removal of plaque by 44.1 percent showed the highest was found next to regular dental check-38.2. 5. The oral health of expectant mothers during pregnancy and conduct a 1-day average number of TBI was highest for the 3 CRC was estimated as 54.7%. And oral hygiene products that include oral solution, 21.5% in ferns were the most highly. Conclusions: In this study, promote and maintain oral health of pregnant women for the systematic development of educational programs, and maternal oral health status of individuals and the cognitive, oral administration to carry the program continued efforts were needed recommendations.
Relation between food pattern and self-recognition of major oral disease on the Korean adults

Objectives : Targeting Korean adults, the food pattern are grasped. And, its correlation with oral disease is analyzed. In order to offer basic data to developing the nutritional policy and nutritional program for the future prevention from oral disease, a research was conducted by utilizing the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005(the 3rd term). Methods : The subjects in this study were 6,526 adults in more than fully 19 years among 9,047 persons who participated in the food intake survey out of those who completed the health interview survey. The statistical analysis was analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 program. Results : 1. As a result of Group Analyzing was indicated to dangerous-type food pattern and protection-type food pattern. 2. As a result of analyzing the answers for having dental caries in the annually personal recognition was indicated to be high in the dangerous-type food pattern, and had not the statistically significant difference. 3. As a result of analyzing the answers for having periodontal disease in the annually personal recognition was indicated to be high in the dangerous-type food pattern, and had the statistically significant difference(p<0.05). 4. As a result of analyzing the food pattern factors that have influence upon both major oral illnesses in the annually personal recognition, the person, who has the dangerous-type food pattern, had high risk level of the periodontal disease in the annually personal recognition. Conclusions : In the above results, as a result of surveying and analyzing importance of the food pattern in the incidence of both major oral illnesses, it is considered that there will be necessity of continuing to research into developing the nutritional policy and nutritional program in order to prevent oral illness in the future.
A study on the correlation between the dental caries and dietary habits and snack intake of pre-school children

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to correlation between the index of dental caries in primary teeth and the habits of diet and snack which are expected to influence on the index. The subjects of this study were 165 parents of the children who visited a pediatric dental hospital located in Gyeong-gi do from Jun. 15th to Sep. 26th, 2009, and the self-report questionnaire survey was performed. Methods : A questionnaire used in a previous study was revised and completed for this study and it consisted of 15 items on general characteristic, nine items on dietary habit, and five items on snack intake habit. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS program and findings are as follows Results : 1. The index of dental caries in primary teeth by ages was that children of four years old has 4~5 with 27.5%, children of five years old has 2~3 and 4~5 with 33.3% and children of six years old has 1 and 8~9 with 25.6%, showing a statistically significant(
=37.72, p<.01). 2. The frequency of brushing teeth was found to have statistically significant negative correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (
=61.20, p<.001). 3. The frequency of taking snack was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (
=51.42, p<.001). 4. The desirability of dietary habit was found to have statistically significant negative correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (
=36.51, p<.001). 5. The frequency of taking biscuit was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (
=67.74, p<.001). 6. The frequency of taking bread was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (
=29.63, p<.01). 7. The frequency of taking caramel and candy was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (
=38.85, p<.001). 8. The frequency of taking soft drinks was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (
=52.92, p<.001). 9. The frequency of taking ice-creams was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (
=75.07, p<.001). Conclusions : Those findings show that the children with undesirable dietary habit and higher frequency of taking snack have higher index of dental caries in primary teeth, therefore, it is considered that the regular brushing teeth and establishment of desirable dietary habit are very important for keeping health oral cavity. It is recommended that the continuous concern and repeated learning are needed in house and group of rearing infants so that the children take foods of fruits which have function of self-purification than the food of carbohydrates which has high adhesion and level of sweetness.
A study on some high school boys' practice of oral health control(around toothbrushing) and knowledge of decay and preferred taste

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to provide some basic data for effective prevention and oral health education for oral health. For that purpose, a self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the boys of three high schools in Gyeonggi Province. Methods : The questionnaire consisted of items about the practice of oral health control and knowledge of decay according to grade, number of snacking, preferred taste, and toothbrushing. Total 487 questionnaires were put to analysis using the SPSS WIN 13.0 program. Results : 1. The biggest number of the boys brushed their teeth twice a day. The 10th graders brushed teeth three times a day, and the 11th and 12th graders tended to brush teeth twice a day(
=18.21, p<.05). 2. As for the way of toothbrushing, 39.0% of the boys said they brushed teeth the way they felt like, being followed by those who said they brushed teeth turning the toothbrush up and down and brushing both the teeth and gums(32.6%). As for the number of snacking, those who had snacks three times a day or more brushed teeth turning the toothbrush up and down and brushing both the teeth and gums. Those who hardly had snacks more tended to brush teeth the way they felt like than those who had snacks(
=21.28, p<.05). And as for preferred tastes, those who preferred a sweet and salty taste more tended to brush teeth the way they felt like than others. And those who preferred a hot taste brushed teeth turning the toothbrush up and down and brushing both the teeth and gums(
=26.85, p<.01). 3. The respondents' percentage of correct answers for 'Decay is caused by bacteria' was 81.5%. Those who preferred a hot taste recorded the highest percentage of correct answers(
=21.95, p<.00). 4. Their percentage of correct answers for 'Decay is accompanied by pain from the beginning' was 78.2%. The 12th graders had the highest rate of correct answers, and the 11th graders had the highest rate of wrong answers(
=11.56, p<.00). 5. Their percentage of correct answers for 'Fluorine is helpful to the prevention of decay' was 75.4%. Those who hardly had snacks recorded the highest rate of correct answers(
=10.05, p<.02). 6. Their percentage of correct answers for 'There is a way to supply fluorine into the waterworks' was 29.2%, which means the percentage of wrong answers was much higher. The percentage of wrong answers was the highest in the 11th grade(
=7.06, p<.03). 7. The respondents' mean scores of knowledge of decay were 13.15 of total 18. While the 12th graders showed the highest level of knowledge of decay, the 11th graders were lower in the level of knowledge of decay than the other graders. And there were significant differences(F=5.41, p<.01) according to grade with no such differences according to the number of snacking and preferred taste. Conclusions : Oral health education should be applied to the boys all through their life to have a great effect, and it is important that they should always put the oral health education into practice to be a successful education.
A study of quality of working life to dental hygienist's

Objectives : Dental hygienist's work satisfaction and stress affect the overall quality of work life(QWL). Therefore, this research is intended to suggest fundamental data to improve QWL by finding out characteristics of each work satisfaction and stress element. To this end, a total of 327 dental hygienists working at general hospitals, university hospitals, dental hospitals and dental clinics across Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon were surveyed. Results of survey are as follows. Methods : The collected data were analyzed by using an SPSS 12.0 statistical program, obtaining the following results. The collected data conducted a questionnaire survey for 327 dental hygienists who work at the hospitals, university hospitals, dental hospitals, and dental clinics located at Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Incheon district from January until March, 2009, and drew the conclusions as follows. Result : 1. Demographic characteristics, income from 1.5 to 1.99 million were the whole lot, more than 2 million to less than 1.5 million was similar. Marital status Married Unmarried higher than the atheist religion, Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, and other, respectively. Classification by level of education in the college graduate, university graduate, graduate diploma, respectively. 2. Are working in a job-related characteristics of dentistry, dental hospital, general and university hospital, respectively. The making in position, Mount, contractor, responsible, senior, was an intern in the order. The five-day workweek whether working at night and is not going to care whether the conduct was similar. Classification of working hours and 8 hours, 8 hours, 8 hours or less orderly, and total of less than 1-3 years of clinical experience, 5 years, less than one year, less than 3-5 years, respectively. 3. There comes out a significant difference according to age, income, position, gross clinical experience, and whether to put night shift into practice in job stability in terms of the quality subsequent to general characteristics(p<.05). 4. There comes out a significant difference according to marital status, one's place of work, position, whether to put a five-day workweek into practice in work environment and benefits package in terms of the quality subsequent to general characteristics (p<.05). 5. There comes out a significant difference according to age, marital status, income, position, and gross clinical experience in education & training and benefits packages in terms of the quality subsequent to general characteristics(p<.05). 6. There comes out a significant difference according to whether to put night medical treatment into practice in social usefulness in terms of the quality subsequent to general characteristics(p<.05). 7. There comes out a significant difference according to marital status, income, one's place of work, gross clinical experience, work hours, and whether to put a five-day workweek into practice in leisure activity in terms of the quality subsequent to general characteristics(p<.05). 8. There comes out a significant difference according to income, one's place of work, and position in wage level in terms of the quality subsequent to general characteristics(p<.05). 9. There was no significant difference in all items related to human relations and free communication in terms of the quality subsequent to general characteristics(p>.05). Conclusions : It is necessary to analyze factors related to work satisfaction and stress in order to improve dental hygienist's quality of work life. Hospitals must support them systematically and institutionally and related organizations must conduct practical research.
A study on factors related to satisfaction level with dental services

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine factors related to the satisfaction level of patients with dental services. Methods : The subjects in this study were 200 patients at three different dental clinics in South Gyeongsang Province, on whom a survey was conducted from June 1 to July 31, 2009. The collected data were analyzed, and the findings of the study were as follows. Results : In regard to the general characteristics of the patients investigated, the women(61.5%) out-numbered the men. By age, those who were at the age of 30 and down made up the largest age group(47.0%). By academic background, the greatest group received junior-college education(54.0%). By occupation, the company employees constituted the largest group (50.5%). By income, the greatest group earned an income of 2 to 2.99 million won(75.0%). Second, as to connections between the characteristics of dental treatment and the reason of choosing the dental clinics, the largest group(70.4%) chose the dental clinics by word of mouth or the recommendation of others. Concerning the reason of dissatisfaction, the biggest group(72.7%) was unsatisfied with medical costs. As for the degree of explicit complaint, the greatest group(49.7%) sort of complained about what made them dissatisfied. Regarding the type of treatment, the biggest group(49.0%) received prosthodontic treatment. In relation to fear for dental treatment, the largest group(34.0%) feared receiving the treatment, and the biggest group(42.6%) did that due to the sound of machines. Third, satisfaction with services(0.762) had the closest correlation to overall satisfaction level, followed by satisfaction with employees(0.735), satisfaction with dentists(0.644) and satisfaction with convenient facilities (0.579). Fourth, the factors that affected overall satisfaction level were gender, the reason of choosing the dental clinic, satisfaction with dentists, satisfaction with employees, satisfaction with services and satisfaction with convenient facilities. The patients who were better satisfied with services(p<0.001), who were more contented with dentists(p<0.001), who chose the dental clinics by the recommendation of others(p<0.01), who were male(p<0.05), who were more gratified with employees(p<0.05) and who were more contented with convenient facilities expressed better overall satisfaction. Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings suggested that dental institutions should keep track of the expectations of patients to prepare differentiated strategies for marketing and human-resources development in consideration of their own circumstances to boost the satisfaction level of patients. Specifically, it's required to heighten the satisfaction level of patients with dentists.
A study on oral health knowledge, behavior and practice among elderly people in some regions

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the general characteristics, oral health knowledge and oral health behavior of elderly people and the relationship of their oral health knowledge to practice of the knowledge in an attempt to provide information on the development of the senior oral health care system. Methods : The subjects in this study were 324 elderly people who used five different social welfare centers in the regions of Sooncheon and Yeosoo. Results : 1. The oral health knowledge of the elderly people investigated was at a low level. Among different sorts of oral health knowledge, they had the best knowledge on the cause of dental caries, and they were most ignorant about the right time for regular dental checkup. 2. Regarding connections between general characteristics and oral health knowledge, the elderly people who never went to a dentist had a better knowledge on oral health, and those who cared about oral health had a better knowledge than the others who didn't. 3. As to practice of oral health knowledge, the best oral health behavior they did was to clean the tongue during toothbrushing, and oral health behavior was not to have an unbalanced diet. The second best one was to be well-nourished, and the third best one was to refrain from drinking, smoking and eating sugar-containing food. The fourth best one was to get a regular dental check-up and teeth cleaned. 4. There was a positive correlation between oral health knowledge and oral health behavior. A better oral health knowledge led to a better oral health behavior. Conclusions : The better oral health knowledge of the elderly people was followed by a better oral health behavior, and the development and implementation of customized oral health education programs geared toward the elderly are urgently required. Oral health professionals should direct their energy into providing sustainable and systematic oral health education, and institutional measures should be taken to make it happen.
