In recent years, the extensive expansion of environmental regulations is led by advanced countries. In particular, REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) effective from 2007 issues a serious threat to export-dependent Korean economy because the principal exports of Korea may infringe upon the regulation. Here, we introduce a general comprehension and current situation of REACH in order to cope with possible crisis caused by REACH. Furthermore, we indicate a trouble in counter-plan prepared by companies and government and wish to suggest appropriate measures on the basis of experts opinions.
A Study on the Establishment of the Standards for the Recycling Rate of Parts and Materials to Calculate Recyclability Rate of Electrical and Electronic Equipments

European directive DIRECTIVE 2002/96/EC requires minimum recycling & recovery rates on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). We tried to make references for recycling and recovery rates of parts and materials used in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), which could be used to calculate recyclability and recoverability rates of a product in the development phase. First, we investigated recycling processes of WEEE and recycling and recovery characteristics of parts and materials. Based on the investigation results and the european recycling data, we made a data base of parts and materials for calculation of recycling and recovery rates of EEE. The developed DB was improved by reflecting advices of european experts.

Numerical Analysis of Heat Transfer of Aligned Wing Type Pin-Fin Array of Air Cooling Module with Various Fin Shapes for Electronic Packaging Application

In this study, the flow and heat transfer of the aligned pin-fin array of the air cooling module for electronic packaging application were numerically analyzed with various fin shapes. The geometric cross-sectional shapes of pin-fins considered in this study were ellipse, wing and circle. The fins had same cross-sectional area and height, but they had different surface areas. As the results, the surface area, the heat transfer coefficient, and the heat transfer performance of pin-fins greatly depended on their shapes. Of the three types of pin-fins, the wing type pin-fin with suitable shape produced the best heat transfer performance. This result implies that the cooling capacity of the pin-fin cooler can be significantly enhanced only by the change of fin shape without increasing air flow-rate or fin density.

In this work, the feasibility of spent zeolite catalyst for reusing as a support was investigated in catalytic odor removal reaction. As a model reaction for odor removal, toluene was selected as a reactant. 10wt% Cu was impregnated on spent HZSM-5 catalyst and spent FCC catalyst. The catalytic activity of the spent HZSM-S was higher than that of spent FCC catalyst in toluene oxidation. This was due to the fact that the surface area of spent HZSM-S was higher than that of spent FCC catalyst. These results may suggest that spent HZSM-S can be reused as a cheap catalyst for toluene removal.
Design of Waste Solvent Treatment Process from LCD Manufacturing Process

In this study, we carry out economic and technical feasibility study for treatment process of waste solvent such as SD waste solution and stripper solution from LCD manufacturing process. Extensive screening work has been done for selecting the best extraction solvent. As a result, it is shown that
is the most adequate extraction solvent for separation and recovery of both SD waste solvent and stripper waste. Rigorous simulation study has been carried out for extraction process and distillation process as a candidate of waste solvent treatment. The result shows that the solvent extraction process is more beneficial than the simple distillation process.
