THE TOPOLOGY OF S
^{2}
-FIBER BUNDLES
Cho, Yong-Seung ; Joe, Do-Sang ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 621~634
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.621
Abstract
Let
be an oriented
bundle over a closed manifold M and let Q be its associated SO(3)-bundle, then we investigate the ring structure of the cohomology of the total space P by constructing the coupling form TA induced from an SO(3) connection A. We show that the cohomology ring of total space splits into those of the base space and the fiber space if and only if the Pontrjangin class
vanishes. We apply this result to the twistor spaces of 4-manifolds.

OH HEE ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 635~653
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.635
Abstract
We study the distribution of a dense orbit of a lattice A acting by the right multiplication on the space
where G is a connected simple Lie group and
its lattice. We show that for
, every dense orbit is equidistributed with respect to the Euclidean norm.

Kim, Hyang-Sook ; Pak, Jin-Suk ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 655~672
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.655
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study n-dimensional QR-submanifolds of maximal QR-dimension isometrically immersed in a quaternionic projective space and to give sufficient conditions in order for such a submanifold to be a tube over a quaternionic invariant submanifold.

SOME RECURRENCE RELATIONS OF MULTIPLE ORTHOGONAL POLYNOMIALS
Lee, Dong-Won ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 673~693
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.673
Abstract
In this paper, we first find a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of multiple orthogonal polynomials by the moments of a pair of measures
and then give representations for multiple orthogonal polynomials. We also prove four term recurrence relations for multiple orthogonal polynomials of type II and several interesting relations for multiple orthogonal polynomials are given. A generalized recurrence relation for multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I is found and then four term recurrence relations are obtained as a special case.

RUENGSINSUB PATTIRA ; LAOHAKOSOL VICHIAN ; UDOMKAVANICH PATANEE ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 695~708
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.695
Abstract
Certain observations about formal Dirichlet series whose coefficients are arithmetic functions are made. These include for example algebraic independence and representation as infinite series of logarithms.

NOTES ON SELECTION PRINCIPLES IN TOPOLOGY (I): PARACOMPACTNESS
BABINKOSTOVA L. ; KOCINAC LJ. D. R. ; SCHEEPERS M. ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 709~721
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.709
Abstract
G. Gruenhage gave a characterization of paracompactness of locally compact spaces in terms of game theory ([6]). Starting from that result we give another such characterization using a selective version of that game, and study a selection principle in the class of locally compact spaces and its relationships with game theory and a Ramseyan partition relation. We also consider a selective version of paracompactness.

THE QUARTIC MOMENT PROBLEM
Li, Chun-Ji ; Lee, Sang-Hoon ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 723~747
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.723
Abstract
In this paper, we consider the quartic moment problem suggested by Curto-Fialkow[6]. Given complex numbers
, with ${\gamma00},\;>0\;and\;{\gamma}_{ji}={\gamma}_{ij}$ we discuss the conditions for the existence of a positive Borel measure
, supported in the complex plane C such that
. We obtain sufficient conditions for flat extension of the quartic moment matrix M(2). Moreover, we examine the existence of flat extensions for nonsingular positive quartic moment matrices M(2).ᬊ꼀Ѐ〷〻ഀ䝥湥牡氠睯牫猀

CHOI GYOUNG-SIK ; HWANG SUK-GEUN ; KIM IK-PYO ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 761~771
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.761
Abstract
In this paper we present another characterization of (
)-invariant sequences. We also introduce truncated Fibonacci and Lucas sequences of the second kind and show that a sequence

DISJOINT PAIRS OF ANNULI AND DISKS FOR HEEGAARD SPLITTINGS
SAITO TOSHIO ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 773~793
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.773
Abstract
We consider interesting conditions, one of which will be called the disjoint
property, on genus
Heegaard splittings of compact orient able 3-manifolds. Here a Heegaard splitting
admits the disjoint
property if there are an essential annulus Ai normally embedded in
and an essential disk
such that
is disjoint from
. It is proved that all genus
Heegaard splittings of toroidal manifolds and Seifert fibered spaces admit the disjoint
property.

FREE ACTIONS OF FINITE ABELIAN GROUPS ON 3-DIMENSIONAL NILMANIFOLDS
Choi, Dong-Soon ; Shin, Joon-Kook ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 795~826
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.795
Abstract
We study free actions of finite abelian groups on 3dimensional nilmanifolds. By the works of Bieberbach and Waldhausen, this classification problem is reduced to classifying all normal nilpotent subgroups of almost Bieberbach groups of finite index, up to affine conjugacy. All such actions are completely classified.

STABILITY ANALYSIS OF BURSTING MODELS
Lee, Eui-Woo ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 827~845
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.827
Abstract
In this paper, we present a general method for the stability analysis of some bursting models. Our method is geometric in the sense that we consider a flow-defined return map defined on a section and determine when the map is a contraction. We find that there are three different stability types in the codimension-1 planar bursters.

ON TWO GRAPH PARTITIONING QUESTIONS
Rho, Yoo-Mi ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 847~856
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.847
Abstract
M. Junger, G. Reinelt, and W. R. Pulleyblank asked the following questions ([2]). (1) Is it true that every simple planar 2-edge connected bipartite graph has a 3-partition in which each component consists of the edge set of a simple path? (2) Does every simple planar 2-edge connected graph have a 3-partition in which every component consists of the edge set of simple paths and triangles? The purpose of this paper is to provide a positive answer to the second question for simple outerplanar 2-vertex connected graphs and a positive answer to the first question for simple planar 2-edge connected bipartite graphs one set of whose bipartition has at most 4 vertices.

RELATIVE SEQUENCE ENTROPY PAIRS FOR A MEASURE AND RELATIVE TOPOLOGICAL KRONECKER FACTOR
AHN YOUNG-HO ; LEE JUNGSEOB ; PARK KYEWON KOH ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 857~869
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.857
Abstract
Let
be a dynamical system and (Y, A, v, S) be a factor. We investigate the relative sequence entropy of a partition of X via the maximal compact extension of (Y, A, v, S). We define relative sequence entropy pairs and using them, we find the relative topological
factor over (Y, v) which is the maximal topological factor having relative discrete spectrum over (Y, v). We also describe the topological Kronecker factor which is the maximal factor having discrete spectrum for any invariant measure.

ON KRAMER-MESNER MATRIX PARTITIONING CONJECTURE
Rho, Yoo-Mi ;
Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, volume 42, issue 4, 2005, Pages 871~881
DOI : 10.4134/JKMS.2005.42.4.871
Abstract
In 1977, Ganter and Teirlinck proved that any
matrix with 2t nonzero elements can be partitioned into four sub-matrices of order t of which at most two contain nonzero elements. In 1978, Kramer and Mesner conjectured that any
matrix with kt nonzero elements can be partitioned into mn submatrices of order t of which at most k contain nonzero elements. In 1995, Brualdi et al. showed that this conjecture is true if $m
