The Meta-Theory of Home Economics
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 1~10
Major studies of Home Economics have had an intention to keep the standard scientific perspective based on value-free and positivism. But in the early 20C there was a change within scientific philosophy and the holistic perspective has risen in the part of scocial and natural science. The phenomenon dealt in the field of Home Economics is the interaction between human and environment and it regards human and family behavior in the context of the environment as a major object. This interaction can be micro/macro and objectiv
jective, So it has a very complex trait. The goal of this study is to verify the applicability of Human Ecology as an alternative framework to explain each level of the family phenomena. Further it is concluded that it is very efficient to present Human Ecology as a general theory for Home Economics because there are increasing demands for understanding interdependence and persuing for balanced co-existence between human and encironment. Finally this study concludes that Human Ecology is not a past theory but a very comprehensive one to construct and abstract theory-building.ng.

Relative Deprivation in Consumption of Urban Poor Households in Korea
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 27~44
Despite the rapid economic growth since the 1960s the economic inequality has been exacerbated in Korea. This study analyzed the variables influencing the level of objective deprivation. For empirical analysis this study used the data on 602 households in the city of Inchon collected by the researcher through interviews. The major method used in this study was the four stepwise multiple regression. The findings were as follows : the residential class was the most critical variable in determining the level of deprivation. For the entire sample assets had stronger effect on the deprivation than nonasset income but two variables had different effects depending on residential class. For the poor residential class two variables had the effect These results imply that the household consumption in Korea shows remarkable difference according to residential class and that the inequality of wealth compared to that of nonasset income had much more serious effects.

Determinants of Fathers' Child Care Time
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 63~70
This study investigated the factors influencing married men's time allocation in child care. A multidimensional theoritical approach employing the perspectives of economic efficiency time availability and role ideology was employed to explain variations in fathers' participation in child care. In addition the effects of several socio-demographic variables were investigated. The sample was drawn from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) conducted in 1987-1988 by the Center for Demography and Ecology in University of Wisconsin-Madison. Results indicated that the time availability perspective was significantly supported and the economic efficiency perspective was partially supported. On the other hand no singificant evidence was found for the effect of role ideology on fathers' child care time. Overall demographic variables had a nonsignificant effect (except in the case of age) on the amount of fathers' participation in child care.
An Economic Approach to Market Work of married Women and their Fertility
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 71~84
The purpose of this research was to analyze the market-labor participation of married women and their demand for an additional child, The theories from 'Economics of Fertility' by Willis and Bekerian 'Household Production Model' were applied to develop the theoretical model. For the empirical analysis National Data for Fetility in Korea was used, Even though the model was fully developed based on economic theories only the pasychological or value-related variables were appeared to be statistically significant. That means in Korea the decision-making for market work and fertility are still following the traditional way as it is.

Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 105~120
The purposes of this research are to find out general trends of mother-adolescent communication and family stress to estimate the differences of communication patterns and family stress according to sociodemographic and communication variables and to analyze communication variables influencing on family stress. The samples were selected from high school students and their mothers and 342 couples were used in final analysis. Barnes & Olson(1982)'s parent-adolescent communication scale(PACI) and McCubbin(1981)'s family stress scale(FILE) were used to measure mother-adolescent communication pattern and family stress. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, Chi-square, F-test Duncan-test, multiple regression, Pearson's r, and Chronbach's α. The result are summerized as follows: 1) Mothers highly perceived mother-adolescent open communication pattern but adolescents highly revealed mother-adolescent close communication pattern. The general trends of family stress showed that adolescents stress is higher than mothers. 2) Communication patterns showed significant differences in mother's age, adolescent's sex and communication variables in mother's education and conversation variables. Generally when mothers and adolescents communicated insufficiently and were not satisfied with communication patterns family stress was increased. 3) Family stress was significantly different in communication patterns. Form the regression analysis it was found that communication patterns are crucial to family stress. Especially open communication pattern between mothers and adolescents was the most important among the communication patterns for family stress was reduced.

The study was made by analysing rules in Chosun Dynasty questionaire nair was drawn up on the basis of it. The subjects of this study were college students of one largest cities and their 800 parents. Collected data was processed by frequency analysis, ANOVA, interrelation and regression which are used through SPSS computer programs, Study results show that acceptance level is higher among the older generation but the necessity of family standare education is urgent beyond the generations. Also people who have lived with grand parents feel more necessity of education family norm. When the education could not be made in families because parents excessive protection examination-centered education, and bad effects of mass media then emphasis has to be made to create life culture which makes family norms to be kept continuously by the education at schools, education culture centers and public facilities.
Children's and Adolescents' Depression, Attributional Style and Academic Achivement.
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 147~157
The subjects were 574 eleven-and fourteen-year-olds enrolled in elementary and junior high school in seoul. To measure subjects' depression and attributional style the childrdn's Depression Inventory(CDI) and the Childrens' Attributional Style Questionnaire(CASQ) were used. Adolescents' depression score was higher than that of children's There was no sex difference in Children's and adolescents' depression. In the children's and adolescents' depression there was significant difference according to maternal educational level. That is the lower maternal educational level, the higher children's and adolescents' depression score. As predicted by the reformulated learned helplessness theory Children and adolescents with high levels of depression score were more likely to attribute bad events to internal stable global causes and good events to external unstable specific causes. Subject who were moore depressed had significantly lower academic achievement scores than subject who were less depressed.

Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 159~170
A study on classification of attachment on the Strange Situation was conducted. 55 infants(27 boys and 28 girls) whose attachment to mothers were assessed in the Strange Situation when they were 14 to 20 moths old The analysis was made according to Ainsworth's classificatory system as well as Main & Solomon's. The results were summarized as follows: 43 infants were identified as secure attachment (Group B) 9 infants as insecure-avoidant(Group A) and 1 infant as insecure-resistant (Group C) There were 2 infants identified as insecure-disorganized/disoriented(Group D) In the sub-classification Group B infants were classified into B1(14 infants) B2(11 infants) and B3(18 infants) Group A infants were classified into 8 A1s and 1 A2 The Group C infant was identified as C1 and B4 were found. Finally because of the majority of infants as Group B, the association between sub-classifications and infan's sex and month was examined. the result indicated no signicant relations between them.
Analysis of the Relationship of Environmental Variables and Children's Verbal Ability II : at Age Five
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 171~184
This study examined the characteristics of the relationship of environmental variables that is HOME socio-demographic variables and children's verbal ability at age five. Especially this study investigated causal relationships among the variables which are supposed to affect children's verbal ability. The subjects of this study were 60 children at age five and their mothers. Instruments included inventory of home stimulation(HOME) inventory of socio-demographic variables inventory of the children's verbal ability and intelligence test. The results obtained from study were as follows: 1. For the most part environmental variables had a significant positive correlation with children's verbal ability 2. The variables that significantly predicted boy's verbal ability were aspects of physical environment breadth of experienc. And the variables that significantly predicted girls' verbal ability were developmental stimulation economic status of the home. 3. The results of the analysis of the causal model showed that the kind of variables that affected boy's verbal ability directly were indirect stimulation direct stimulation. And the kind of variables that affected girls' verbal ability directly were direct stimulation econmic status of the home inditect stimulation. 4. Another causal model of the environmental variables affecting children's verbal ability were formulated by exogenous variables(socio-demographic variables) and by endogenous variables (HOME, children's intelligence). The results of the analysis of the causal model showed that only HOME variables significantly affected boy's and girls' verbal ability directly.
A Study on the Prevalence of Obesity and the Related Factors Among High School Girls
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 185~196
The prevalence of obesity by measuring the amount of body fat and its related factors were investigated in 315 high school girls living in Seoul. Average body fat amount and body fat percentage measured by the body impedance analysis were 14.2
5.2kg and 25.9
7.0% respectively. Mean body mass index(BMI) was 2.1
2.7kg/m2 and 6.7% of the subjects showed over 25kg/m2 Correlative analysis reveal that the body fat percentage was significantly correlated to both relative body weight and BMI(r=0.66, P<0.01, r=0.68, P<0.01) Relative body weight of the subjects showed positive correlation to those of their mother and father. It was shown that many students skipped breakfast often and did not have a pleasant meal with enough time. There was no relationship between adiposity and dietary nutrient or energy intake. When subgroups of the subjects attending a non-vocational high school and those attending a vocational or technical school were compared obesity was more prevalent in the former. Therefore the burden caused by preparing the university entrance examination seems to play an important role in fat deposition.
A Survey on the Relationship Between Self-Reported Symptoms of Fatigue and Dietary Factors of Taxi Drivers in Cheonan Area
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 197~206
The effect of dietary factors on the self-reported symptoms of fatigue were surveyed by the interviewing method among 119 taxi drivers in Cheonan area. Some symptoms of fatigue which many taxi drives said to be suffered from were headache physical exhaustion nervousness tired and sore eyes and anorexia. When related variables to the self-reported symptoms of fatigue were analyzed daily sleeping hours and exercise were significantly correlated with physical mental and neuro-motor fatigue, Subjects who had meals irregularly were greater than those who had regularly. In addition they tended to eat faster during working and 28.6% of them seldom had breakfast. Subjects who had meals irregularly consumed significantly less fat iron calcium vitamin A, and riboflavin. A and riboflavin and niacin than those who skipped it.
Effect of Guar gum levels in Backsulgies on Plasma Glucose and Insulin in Healthly Men
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 32, issue 3, 1994, Pages 207~216
Backsulgies containing various levels of guar gum(0g, 2.5g or 5g) were ingested by ten healthy male subjects after 12-h fast. Guar backsulgies was given a time in a week a time in a week for 3 weeks with 75g glucose. The Sensory qualities of backsulgies containing guar gum powder of different levels(0g, 2.5, 5g) were also evaluated using a hedonic scoring technique. On each test day 4ml samples of venous blood were taken from the fasted subjects. Further 4ml post-prandial blood samples were taken from the subjects 30, 60, 90 and 120min after guar backsulgies had commenced. Result were as follows: Plasma glucose and insulin levels were not sifnificantly reduced according to guar gum levels in backsulgies. But plasma glucose and insulin levels of the case which ingested 5g guar backsulgies tended to be lower than those of the case which ingested 0g or 2.5g guar backsulgies. Therefore it is recommended that 5g guar backsulgies is most effective snack of diabetics. KEY WORDS: guar backsulgies plasma glucose, plasma insulin, snack
