Infant Emotionality, Parenting, and 3-Year Inhibition
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 36, issue 4, 1998, Pages 19~34
The purpose of this study was to examine early emotionality and mothering and fathering antecedents of inhibition of children at age 3 years in a sample of 100 children(51 boys; 49 girls). In order to assess child's behavioral inhibition and mothering, the behaviors of each child-mother dyad was videotaped in a structured lab situation. Data on Fathering behavior were gathered through questionnaires. 2X2ANOVA, Hierachical Regression Analyses and Fisher's Z test were conducted for the statistical analyses. The main results were as follows; 1) Only small portion of the variance in subsequent inhibition could be explained by early emotionality(i.e.negative, positive, and the interaction of both emotionality). 2) High negativity coupled with low positivity in infancy predicted high inhibition especially for girls. 3) In general, sensitive mothering and appropriateness of mothers' response were related to child's low inhibition, while parental intrusiveness and negative affect increased child's inhibition. 4) Mothering appeared more influential in the case of children who showed low positivity during infancy. The importance of distinguishing positive and negative emotionality in infancy and studying parental behavior to predict child's inhibition were discussed.
The political issue on women's unpaid work I : Imputing the Value of Household Work
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 36, issue 4, 1998, Pages 35~48
The imputation of monetary value of women's contribution to the informal economy for inclusion in satellite accounts to the formal System of National Accounts has been attempted along many methods. This is bases on official laborforce statistics and time-use survey. In this statistical system, household work is not an economic activity(or productive labor). Also, the clssification of activities involved in household work is different from that of sampling survey relating evaluation. The measurement of women's unpaid work is one of the important tasks for the improvement of women's status and the establishment of a development policy. To measure unpaid work in the economic terms, we should take following measures; 1) develop satellite or other official accouts to measure unpaid work outside national accounts. 2) conduct a nation-wide time-use survey to measure the unpaid work. 3) develp a proper classificaition of activities for time-use statistics. 4) reexamine the minimum time criterion. 5) determine a proper method of valuing along the law system.

A case study of kindergarten children's reading stances and responses with relation to those of their mothers
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 36, issue 4, 1998, Pages 79~94
The case study describes kindergarten children's reading stances and responses with relation to those of their mothers'. Rosenbaltt's theory (1978) of aesthetic and efferent stances in used to characterize the relationship between the reader and the text. mother's reading stances are examined by observing each case study child's reading experience with his/her mother at home. In most cases differences in some children's preferred stances seemed to reflect differences in their mothers' stances. As a result, children took a different type of stance from the teacher's efferent stance and were perceived by the teacher to be slower with regard to literacy development, even though they had formed their own reading worlds. Interestingly enough, children with an aesthetic reading stance were welcomed among their peers during free play time. In contrast, children who took a stance congruent with the teacher's efferent stnace were perceived by the teacher to be on the right track with regard to literacy development, although their reading worlds seened to be limited. Interestingly, the children with efferent reading stances were not engaged in collaborative meaning negotiation processes with peers. The case study children with mothers who did not take an extreme type of stance, I.e., neither a very efferent nor a very aesthetic stance, seemed to choose a type of stance depending on a context.

Parent's achieving pressure had a negative correlation with the maternal child rearing behavior and influenced children's learned helplessness, but did not influence children's self-evaluation. Maternal child rearing behavior influenced children's self-evaluation, but did not influence children's self-evaluation. Maternal child rearing behavior influenced children's self-evaluation, but did not influence children's learned helplessness directly. Children's self-evaluation had the strongest direct impact on children's learned helplessness.
