Maternal Knowledge and Perceptions of Quick Service Patronage Regarding Children in South Korea
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 42, issue 5, 2004, Pages 1~10
The last half of the twentieth century brought many new opportunities and challenges to the traditional South Korean family. One area of change that challenges the traditional South Korean family is the availability of new food sources, specifically the introduction of commercial restaurants that offer new types of food in untraditional settings. This research investigated the perceptions of South Korean mothers'(n = 104) regarding the patronage of quick service style restaurants by their children through the use of Q sort methodology. The results showed that even though children do influence the decision making process when determining where to eat away from home, Korean mothers still play a very prominent role in planning the family's food consumption. While Western food styles and practices can provide a variety of food selections and service styles, care should be taken not to over utilize the quick service restaurants' in place of traditional foods.
Qualitative Analysis on Digital Divide between Parents and Children and its Consequences on Communication, Conflict, and Consumer Socialization
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 42, issue 5, 2004, Pages 11~25
This study analyzed information sharing and digital divide within family and their consequences on the power structure between parents and their children based on the resource-exchange theory. In-depth interview has been conducted to collect data and materials for analysis. Major findings are: first, children recognized the ability to use information technology as resources, while parents did not; second, digital divide between parents and children seemed to be associated with laissez-faire communication between parents and children and worked as a cause of conflict between parents and children; third, reverse-socialization from children to parents occurred in consumer socialization in the family. Based on the findings, the implications to further research were provided.
A Study on the Image types and Characteristics of Lingerie Design
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 42, issue 5, 2004, Pages 27~37
This study was initiated for the purpose of improving the visual effect of lingerie design, and it focused on the image factors and their characteristics of the lingerie design. Images of 105 lingerie design were evaluated by 3-5 images/participant with each image being evaluated 15 times through the SD method 5-scale questionnaire. The lingerie design elements were also analyzed by a committee. For data analysis, SPSS 10.0 program was used, and the principal component analysis, Ward-cluster, K-mean cluster analysis, ANOVA, duncan-test were conducted. The results are as follows: 1) The three major characteristics of the visual images in the lingerie design were aesthetics, dignity, and youth, which were supported 76.78% by the responses. 2) The visual image types can be categorized into four clusters; a dignified style, a sprightly style, a practical style, and a sexual style. 3) The design elements that allowed different design characteristics among the image types were style(one-piece/two-piece), total length, waist fit, matching color, silky lustrous, see-through on waist, hip, race percentages. 4) The ABC(apparel-body-construct) observed that a practical style was perceived as flat and whole rather than a dignified style or a sprightly style, while a sexual style was seen as round and partial.
The Evaluation on the Meal Pattern and Nutritional Balance for University Foodservices in Seoul - Comparison between Self-operated and Contracted management-
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 42, issue 5, 2004, Pages 39~52
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the meal pattern and the nutritional balance in university foodservices of Seoul. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire with 317 students at five different cafeterias that served 23 meals. We weighed all the meals offered by the university foodservices, separated the foods, and calculated their nutritional content using a computer program
. We also checked the dishes and those amount students consumed from the menu. The results of this study is summarized as follows. : 1) The most prevalent menu patterns included rice, soup, two side dishes, and kimchi. 2) Most nutrient contents per meal in a given menu was lower than one third of the recommended dietary allowance(RDA). 3) The mean energy content for the amount of rice that was served was 399㎉, for the side dish, it was 107㎉, and for the kimchi, it was 9.9㎉. 4) The number of total dishes and side dishes was five and two, respectively. The dietary variety score was 16.7, and the dietary diversity score was 3. 5) The mean energy intake by students at self-operated managements were 545㎉, and at one contracted management, the energy intake were 494㎉. Both of them did not serve enough to meet one third of the RDA. Nutrient adequacy ration(NAR) was 0.4∼0.9, and Index of nutritional quality(INQ) was above 0.9 for most nutrients with the exception of calcium and vitamin B

Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 42, issue 5, 2004, Pages 53~76
This study conducted a survey on sexuality for the purpose of substantial verification, focusing on literature reviews of premarital sexuality. The Literature reviews included relevant studies of our society and its cultures such as premarital sexuality and behaviors, expressions of love or intimacy, contraception, abortion, sex education and sexuality in family contexts. The survey was conducted to 355 university students and 200 working premarital adults in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gangwon areas. It has 21 questions to measure sexuality by sexual altitude sentence completion Scale (composed of 4 categories and options of the other items)which has been widely used by professional counsel institutes. Male and female students complete the sentence of this scale, then similar contents were classified. Love type test was developed by Hendrick & Hendrick (1986) was used to measure love and intimacy. Results from the sentence completion for sexuality attitudes are generally as follows: First of all, there was clear difference in male md female responses about each categories. For example, With regard to the questions on premarital sex with opposite sex friends of long time relationship, more than half of male students said it is all right, whereas more than half of female students answered to the same questions that it can never be possible, with many answering 'I don't know', or leaving them unanswered. The survey result, masturbation answered that Female is needed however many Females actually don't it. But Male is almost necessary and conduct himself. On questions regarding, Homosexuality is both male and Female answered opposed. These results of the study show that premarital adults clearly open to issues on sexuality compared with the past, but they have not established their own sexual identity, which can be seen with big gap between male and female perspectives, due to experiencing confusion under the changing environment of the society.

Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 42, issue 5, 2004, Pages 93~106
The purpose of this study is to make clear the indoor environmental efficiency and spatial function of the front balcony in apartments using responses from residents'. An interview survey carried out during the 14/sup th/∼24/sup th/ of January 2003, and a questionnaire survey was given during the 17/sup th/∼29/sup th/of January. Interviewees consisted of 31 residents living in renovated apartments, which had the front balcony added onto the living room. The respondents of the questionnaire survey consisted of 37 residents living in ordinary apartments with an existing front balcony. The residents living in ordinary apartments show relatively positive responses on the indoor thermal environment during winter, glare by daylight, and outdoor noise. The average heating charges of the renovated apartments came out to be more expensive than the ordinary apartments. In most renovated apartments, the living area converted from front balcony was used as the same functions ('space for drying the laundry', 'storage space', or 'space for cultivating of flower pots') of ordinary front balcony. From the results of this study, it is undesirable to renovate the front balcony as an addition to the livingroom.

The Changes in the Chemical Components and Antioxidant Activities in Ecklonia Cava According to the Drying Methods
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association , volume 42, issue 5, 2004, Pages 193~203
This study examined the changes in the chemical components and antioxidant activity of Ecklonia cava according to the drying methods. As chemical components, the concentrations of minerals(K, Ca, Na, Mg, Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn), vitamins(vitamin C,
-tocopherol) and the total polyphenols were analyzed. In additions, the antioxidant activity was determined by measuring the free radical(DPPH radical, superoxide anion radical, hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide) scavenging activity and the linoleic acid peroxidation inhibitory activity. The mineral content was not affected by the drying methods. However, more vitamins were lost and the total polyphenol concentration was reduced as a result of sun-drying than by the other drying methods used. More of the total polyphenol was preserved by freezing-drying than by any of the other drying methods, which meant that there was a higher antioxidant activity after freeze drying.
