The Role of Social Support and Locus of Control as Stress Coping Behaviors in Victims of School Violence

This study purposed to examine how school violence victims' coping behaviors are affected by locus of control and social support. Two hundred and thirty fifth and sixth graders from four elementary schools in Seoul filled out School Violence Scale reports of the Seoul Council for Safe School (2002), Attributional Style Questionnaire (Weinstein, 1980) revised by Young Sil Im(2004), Social Support Appraisal Scale (Dubow & Ulman, 1989) revised by Myung Sook Kim(1994), and Stress Coping Behaviors reports(Park & Chung, 2001). The data were analyzed with the descriptive statics and t-test. The results of this study were as follows: First, more children showed internal locus of control than external one under negative circumstances. School violence victims perceived family's support to be more important than friend's and teacher's support. Their coping behaviors were partitioned in the order of active, aggressive, passive/avoidant, and social support seeking. Second, children with internal locus of control used more passive/avoidant coping behavior than those with external one. Third, children who perceived high social support from family used more active and social support seeking coping behavior. Children who perceived low support from friends used more passive/avoidant coping behavior while those with low support from teachers used more aggressive coping behavior. In conclusion, there are differences in stress coping behaviors by victims of school violence based on their internal or external locus of control and perceived social support.
College Students' Time Management Behavior Using the Time-Matrix

This study investigated college students' time management behavior and time satisfaction according to the use of the time-matrix. Data were collected from 400 college students in Seoul by a self-administered questionnaire. Collected data were subjected to descriptive and comparative statistical analyses using the software SPSS(version 12.0). The conclusions of this study were as follows; 1. The use of time-matrix was categorized into 4 task groups: (1) not urgent but important, (2) urgent but notimportant, (3) neither urgent nor important, (4) urgent and important. 2. Time-management-behavior of planning was categorized into 3 components: standard setting, reality overlapping and implementing into 3 components(i.e., checking, adjusting, facilitating condition). 3. In all domains except overlapping, 'not urgent but importance' was the most popular managerial behavior. 4. However, 'neither urgent nor important' was voted the most popular in terms of managerial satisfaction. This study provides useful knowledge on managerial time-use categorization. Furthermore also contributes towards the knowledge base of time-managerial behaviors and dispels stereotypical-thinking that only bing busy all the time using is an indication of good time management behavior. Finally, this study advocates use of the time-matrix to achieve efficient time management.
Expression Types and Characteristics of Body Parts Shown in Modern Fashion Design: Focused on from 2001S/S to 2008S/S

This study analyzed expression types and characteristics of modern fashion designs using body parts. The research was conducted based on a literature review and empirical research of fashion magazines published in Korea and other countries from 2001 to 2008. Four fashion statements predominated. Most frequently, body parts presented in modern fashion design, included realistic expressions, simplification, anatomic expression and a mixture with other patterns and logos. A body part, such as an eye, a lip, a hand or a chest was characteristically located in an unfamiliar position, as part of modern fashion design using body parts. Other parts and surrealistic images were shown with accessories utilizing body shapes. Second, amusing images were emphasized with humorous expressions, including simplification of body parts, childish decorations, fairy tale illusions and cartoon factors. Third, erotic images were presented with a more realistic expression of a partial image of a female body part, such as a lip or a tongue. Fourth, the use of facial images of celebrities in modern fashion design showed the phase of the times and the characteristic utilization of pop art as an image.
The Examination of Korean-Chinese Parent-Child Relationships through Korean Proverbs

The purpose of this study was to examine Korean-Chinese parent-child relationship values through Korean proverbs on parent-child relationships. A total of 233 Korean-Chinese who reside in Yungil, China participated in this study. The participants were recruited through Korean-Chinese preschools and elementary schools. They completed a questionnaire which asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with Korean proverbs. The items were classified into four categories: filial piety (duty), child-care and education, childrearing practices, and traditional son preference (and daughter discrimination). The results showed that, although the participants highly agreed to the meaning of the proverbs, they seldom used Korean proverbs in their daily lives. The findings concluded that the participants generally manifested a traditional value of filial piety or duty. Also, the findings showed that more fathers acclaimed the value of traditional son preference (and daughter discrimination) than mothers. Finally, the degree of familiarity with Korean culture was found to be a major factor in explaining differences in levels of agreement or disagreement to the proverbs. Since Korean-Chinese ethnic minority groups in China tend to adhere to traditional Korean values, they might encounter more challenges assimilating into the mainstream Chinese culture.
The Development of Parent Education Programs for Internet Use Guidance of Elementary School Children

Having developed a parent education program for guidance of internet-using children, we evaluated the effectiveness of this program. The program consisted of five two-hour sessions. It was test-run with nineteen participants, which included mothers of elementary school children. In the evaluation of the program, we employed so-called 'pretest-posttest control group design' which compares the difference in the parenting sense of competence, parents' sense of role satisfaction, parents' sense of insecurity, and parents' rearing attitudes between the experimental group and the control group. Program evaluation revealed that the parenting sense of competence and role satisfaction increased in the group that participated in the program compared to the non-participating group. Furthermore, the parents' sense of insecurity decreased and democratic rearing attitudes were fostered in the participating group.
A Study on the "Praxis" which are Perceived by Elementary Students on Practical Arts Education

The purpose of this study is to find out the practical problems that 6th grade students are facing, how they perceive Practical Arts education and the praxis of Practical Arts education relating to the problems, and whether the content of Practical Arts curriculum is useful for solving practical problems of 6th grade students. The data used in this study are collected from questionnaires and include in-depth interviews in order to make up for the quantitative research. The major findings of this study were summarized as follows. 1. Elementary school students regarded Practical Arts education as the subject matter through which they learn skills of life. They thought it is useful to their present and future life and to nurture environment-friendly attitude. Furthermore, elementary school students perceive that the meaning of practice in Practical Arts education lies not in praxis as practical action, but in just practice as technical action. 2. According to the survey based on their perception and their practical problems, 66.9% of students answered the learning content of Practical Arts education is not useful in solving their problems. And only 33.4% of students answered the learning content of Practical Arts education is useful in solving their problems. Negative view was predominant among elementary school students. And the Practical Arts curriculum does not reflect much of the practical problems that 6th grade students face. Through these results, Practical Arts education turns out to be hardly related with students' life, though it is the subject matter of students' real life.
The Effects of Appearance Stress on Children and Adolescents' Self-Esteem: Mediating Variables of Sex-Role Identity and Depression

This study aimed to explore self-esteem influencing variables such as appearance stress, sex-role identity, and depression, in order to assess self-esteem standards for children and adolescents. It also investigated mediating effects of sex-role identity and depression on self-esteem. The study subjects were 2,511 elementary students and 2,958 middle school students, selected using the Korea Adolescence Panel Data. The data collected from interviews were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis, t test, Pearson's correlation and hierarchical multiple regression. The main results were as follows: Firstly, appearance stress and depression of female students were higher than those of male students. However, sex-role identity of male students was higher than those of female students. Difference in self-esteem was not statistically significant between male and female students (P > 0.05). Secondly, appearance stress was positively correlated to sex-role identity and depression, but negatively correlated to selfesteem. Thirdly, sex-role identity and depression had a mediating affect on self-esteem. Finally, variables affecting self-esteem of children and adolescents were appearance stress, men-role identity, and depression. In addition to these variables, women-role identity was a major factor for female students.
The Effects of Consumer-Brand Relationships on Brand Charisma and Brand Loyalty

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of consumer-brand relationship on brand charisma and brand loyalty. Four hundred and ten consumers living in Seoul and its suburb participated in this study. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, reliability, and structure equation modeling were used. The results were as follows. First, three factors of an 'affection', 'commitment', and 'trust' of advertisement were produced for consumer-brand relationship. Second, all three factors of consumer-brand relationship affected positively on brand charisma. Second, except 'affection' factor, two factors affected significantly on brand loyalty. Third, brand charisma affected positively on brand loyalty. Based on these results, this study would provide fashion marketers more efficient brand marketing strategies.
A Study on Preferance and Using of Aster scaber

This study was conducted to investigate the uses of Aster scaber. The survey methodology employed was a questionnaire, which was used to interview 272 (37.8%) males and 448(62.2%) females from the Seoul and Kyunggido areas. The main results are as follows: 40-50 years old like and eat Aster scaber more frequently than 10-30 years old. The most popular reason provided for the preferance of Aster scaber was good health benefits. People indicating a dislike for Aster scaber had generally fewer previous experiences of eating this plant. Respondents who regularly ate healthy foods preferred prepared Aster scaber to others foods(p < .001). The main purchasing place was traditional markets and supermarkets. The main cooking method was boiling with addition of seasoning. Aster scaber was purported as having the following characteristics "low calories and thus great as diet food'(4.03), 'ability to prevent adult disease'(3.95), 'high in vitamins and minerals'(3.89), and 'high fiber content which prevented constipation'(3.85). However, it was not associated with 'astringent taste'(3.51) and was regarded as 'fat accumulation restrainer and remover of heavy metal'(3.53). Recognition and eating experience was low for Aster scaber kimchi and rice bread, bread, sauce and Aster scaber added health drinks. However opinion of its taste was regarded highly.
The Effects of Children's Shame and Communication with Their Parents on Peer Pressure

The purpose of this study was to investigate the interaction and effects of shame and parent-child communication on children and early adolescents' peer pressure. The subjects of this study were 359 children and early adolescents from 5th grade in elementary school to 2nd grade in middle school (187 boys, and 172 girls) in Daejeon city. The results of this research indicated that gender and age played a significant role on the effects of shame and parent-child communication on peer pressure. Open communication with mothers showed a positive relationship with boys' peer pressure, whereas open communication with father showed a negative relationship with boys' peer pressure. The interaction effects of shame and open-communication with fathers and mothers worked differently on peer pressure across gender and age. Interaction effects of shame and open communication with fathers and mothers were significant for boys, but not for girls. Interaction effect of shame and open communication with mothers was significant for children and adolescents.
