Application and Evaluation of An Attitudinal Model for Travel Mode Choice Behavior Analysis
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 11, issue 2, 1993, Pages 5~26
In order to analyze travel mode choice behavior, behavioral models including logit model, based on revealed preference theory, have been using easily measurable variables such as individual socioeconomic characteristics and physical attributes of travel modes. But some recent attitudinal models of travel choice behavior have implied that the negligence of individual psychological variables and individual choice constraints in travel mode choice might preclude better prediction of individual travel mode choice behavior. In this context, this study was attempted to reconstruct an attitudinal model(AM), especially focused on the decision rules in travel mode choice decision making process, consistent with the conceptual framework relating individual attitude and choice constraints to choice behavior. And to evaluate the strengths of the AM to other comparative models(logit, linear-additive, conjunctive, lexicographic model) in predicting travel mode choice bebavior, an empirical study of the mode choice in work-trip to CBD in Seoul was performed. According to the results the percent of correct prediction(PCP) derived from the AM was higher than those derived from comparative models by at least 7 to 20% in predicting travel mode choice. But each model produced a different prediction accuracy depending on market segmentation by travel modal users, individual socioeconomic characteristics, transportation system characteristics, and satisfaction levels. The finding that different groups divided by a certain criterion employ different decision rules supports the necessity of developing a choice model such as the AM combining compensatory and noncompensatory decision rules, and suggests that a proposed transportation system management plan or policy may have different effects on each group.
A Study on Correlativity of the Regional Structure Change and Traffic Demand in Pusan
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 11, issue 2, 1993, Pages 27~44
The purpose of this study is to classify the regional structure of Pusan based on socio-economic phenomena in 1979 and 1991, and to analyze correlations between the regional structure change and traffic demend. To formalize the land-use by each zone, the Principal Component Analysis were performed by using 15 socio-sconomic variables. As a result of the analysis, five land-use factors(i.e., official, residential, commercial, manufactural, and other functions) in 1979 and four factors(i. e., residential, 3rd industrial, manufactural, and other functions) in 1991 were extracted as main regional structure components. It was proved that there is strong correlations between the regional structure change and traffic demand by using Quantification Theory II and also by testing correlation coefficient.
A Comparative Analysis of Operating Costs of Teleconferencing and Alternative Transportation Modes
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 11, issue 2, 1993, Pages 45~62
The major objective of this study is to analyze the differences between operating costs of teleconferencing and alternative transportation modes for the conference in major compaines. Alternative transportation modes include road, rail, and air transportation mode. A case study is conducted using the data gathered for Pohang Steel Coperations. The main results are: (1) the operating cost of the teleconferencing is cheaper than operating cost of transportation modes when the number of teleconferencing are over 12 frequencs, and the number of person are over 15. Results reveal that teleconferencing turns out to be effective means of conference. (2) the amount of differences of operating costs on teleconsferencing and transportation modes gets higher according to the time elapsed. In particular, when teleconferencing cost is compared to operating cost of road transportation, it is found that the cost saving of 2.75 billion won in year 2001 can be realized.
Development of a Route Guidances System and its Application
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 11, issue 2, 1993, Pages 63~84
The main purpose of this paper is to develop a route guidance system which is a part of the intelligent vehicle-highway system and to apply to a real world in order to evaluate usefulness of the system. To this end, significant literature review works with regard to vehicle navigation and route guidance systems were conducted and have provided an important information about state-of-the-art systems developed and tested by the advanced countries. A geographic information system, called INTGIS, was used to find the shortest path in a given road network. Three scenarios to find minimum path were simulated and observed : 1) with-constraint on intersections and road segments, 2) without-constraint on intersections and road segments, and 3) via several stops from origin to destination. Based on a series of experiments, the results indicate that the route guidance system developed in this research is very useful to inform drivers on highway and arterial the traffic informations such as congestion and incident.
