Application of Information Technology to the Logistics Management (Life-Cycle Cost Approach for Evaluating the System Alternatives)

This research discussed the effects of applying information technologies to the logistics management and evaluated the system alternatives for the Commercial Vehicle Operation system using Life Cycle Cost Analysis. The roadside communication alternative turned out to be more effective than the wireless communication alternative in terms of the cumulative Life Cycle Cost Equivalent. The individual communication expense was the major burden for the wireless communication alternative. However. unpredictable factors as costs incurred by thunderbolt damages will affect the effectiveness of the roadside alternative. Therefore, mixture of both alternatives will be preferable according to the characteristics of the facilities
A Study on the Operational Method of Urban Arterial With U-Turn

U-turns are allowed widely at the intersections by local police department while the left-turn Phases have been gradually Prohibited. However, any strategies for U-turn movements at signalized intersections are unavailable. Therefore, the Purpose of this study is to Propose the efficient operational method of Urban arterial adopting U-turn strategies. Four alternatives are evaluated they are, 1) U-turn movements are allowed at the adjacent intersection with exclusive U-turn lane while the major or the minor approach is Prohibited, 2) U-turn movements are allowed at the adjacent mid-block Pedestrian crossing with exclusive U-turn lane while the major approach is Prohibited. 3) U-turn movements are allowed at the adjacent mid-block Pedestrian crossing with exclusive U-turn lane while the minor approach is prohibited and 4) Comparative one between alternative 3 and 4. From the results of this study, it concludes that the method of U-turn movements allowed at the adjacent mid-block pedestrian crossing with exclusive U-turn lane is the most effective strategy among those alternatives. The strategies of alternative 1 and 4 are Proposed by the boundary based on the major through and left-turn volumes and the minor left-turn volume.
Estimating Price Elasticities of Domestic Air Transport Demand by Stated Preference Technique

This study analyzes the price elasticities of airline Passenger demand through the 'Stated Preference' technique which uses survey data. Because the domestic airfare has been regulated by the government. it is not easy to derive Price elasticity through the usual regression analysis with aggregate data and thus a special methodology is required for elasticity estimation. Therefore, in this study we estimated the Price elasticities of domestic air passenger demand and the modal share change rates to the alternative modes with logit model and sample enumeration method, by analyzing the survey data on air Passengers' demand behavior about the mode choice between air-rail. air-bus, and air-car. As the results, the estimated price elasticities are in the range of -0.6~-0.9, and rail is mainly chosen as an alternative mode. bus is chosen Partly, and car is barely used.
The Effects of Horizontal Curves on Vehicle Speeds and Accidents

The Purpose of this Paper was to study the relationship between the change of operating speeds and the accidents on horizontal curves. For this purpose, we divided a horizontal curve section into two parts, a tangent section and a curve section, to estimate the operating speed for each vehicle. For studying relationship between the change of speed and geometric effect, the free-flow speed was used. The location and speed for the lowest speed were studied. Also, we analyzed the relationship between the change of operating speeds and the accidents. The followings are resulted in this study. First, drivers tend to reduce speeds significantly before they reach a curve. And the lowest speed was recorded at the downstream of the Point of curve (PC) due to the limited sight-distance of drivers on curve. Second, the larger the change of operating speeds become, the greater frequency of accident was recorded. These results can be used for developing the safety index on highways to check the design consistency.
The Development of Freeway Travel-Time Estimation and Prediction Models Using Neural Networks

The purpose of this study is to develop travel-time estimation model using neural networks and prediction model using neural networks and kalman-filtering technique. The data used in this study are travel speed collected from inductive loop vehicle detection systems(VDS) and travel time collected from the toll collection system (TCS) between Seoul and Osan toll Plaza on the Seoul-Pusan Expressway. Two models, one for travel-time estimation and the other for travel-time Prediction were developed. Application cases of each model were divided into two cases, so-called, a single-region and a multiple-region. because of the different characteristics of travel behavior shown on each region. For the evaluation of the travel time estimation and Prediction models, two Parameters. i.e. mode and mean were compared using five-minute interval data sets. The test results show that mode was superior to mean in representing the relationship between speed and travel time. It is, however shown that mean value gives better results in case of insufficient data. It should be noted that the estimation and the Prediction of travel times based on the VDS data have been improved by using neural networks, because the waiting time at exit toll gates can be included for the estimation of travel time based on the VDS data by considering differences between VDS and TCS travel time Patterns in the models. In conclusion, the results show that the developed models decrease estimation and prediction errors. As a result of comparing the developed model with the existing model using the observed data, the equality coefficients of the developed model was average 88% and the existing model was average 68%. Thus, the developed model was improved minimum 17% and maximum 23% rather then existing model .
A Genetic Algorithm Approach to the Continuous Network Design Problem with Variational Inequality Constraints

The equilibrium network design problem can be formulated as a mathematical Program with variational inequality constraints. We know this problem may have may multiple local solutions due to its inherent characteristics - Nonlinear Objective function and Nonlinear, Nonconvex constraints. Hence, it is difficult to solve for a globally optimal solution. In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithm to obtain a globa1 optimum among many local optima. A Proposed a1gorithm is compared with 4 different solution algorithms for 1 small test network and 1 real-size network. The results of some computational testing are reported.
Applications of Fuzzy Theory on The Location Decision of Logistics Facilities

In existing models in optimization, the crisp data improve has been used in the objective or constraints to derive the optimal solution, Besides, the subjective environments are eliminated because the complex and uncertain circumstances were regarded as Probable ambiguity, In other words those optimal solutions in the existing models could be the complete satisfactory solutions to the objective functions in the Process of application for industrial engineering methods to minimize risks of decision-making. As a result of those, decision-makers in location Problems couldn't face appropriately with the variation of demand as well as other variables and couldn't Provide the chance of wide selection because of the insufficient information. So under the circumstance. it has been to develop the model for the location and size decision problems of logistics facility in the use of the fuzzy theory in the intention of making the most reasonable decision in the Point of subjective view under ambiguous circumstances, in the foundation of the existing decision-making problems which must satisfy the constraints to optimize the objective function in strictly given conditions in this study. Introducing the Process used in this study after the establishment of a general mixed integer Programming(MIP) model based upon the result of existing studies to decide the location and size simultaneously, a fuzzy mixed integer Programming(FMIP) model has been developed in the use of fuzzy theory. And the general linear Programming software, LINDO 6.01 has been used to simulate, to evaluate the developed model with the examples and to judge of the appropriateness and adaptability of the model(FMIP) in the real world.
Development of Optimization Model for Traffic Signal Timing in Grid Networks

Signal optimization model is divided bandwidth-maximizing model and delay-minimizing model. Bandwidth-maximizing model express model formulation as MILP(Mixed Integer Linear Programming) and delay-minimizing model like TRANSYT-7F use "hill climbing" a1gorithm to optimize signal times. This study Proposed optimization model using genetic algorithm one of evolution algorithm breaking from existing optimization model This Proposed model were tested by several scenarios and evaluated through NETSIM with TRANSYT-7F\`s outputs. The result showed capability that can obtain superior solution.
