Simulation Study of the Bus Progression Signal System
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 5, issue 2, 1987, Pages 5~18
Buses arrive at a traffic intersection later than passenger cars by the amount of dwell time at previous bus stops. This late arrival of buses affects the total passenger delay at intersections especially in the street carrying large bus volume. The bus progression signal system in which the signal offset is given in favor of bus platoons was applied in the case area of Kangnam street in Seoul, and various effects were analyzed using the TRANSYT-7F simulation model. It was observed that the total passenger delay can be reduced significantly if the bus progression signal system is applied, and the most effective bus priority treatment is proved to be the bus progression signal system installed with exclusive bus lanes.
Traffic Signal Timing at Semi-Protected Left-Turn Intersections for Energy Saving
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 5, issue 2, 1987, Pages 19~35
Transportation energy saving is a national concern because all national petroleum energy is imported. A number of intersections are operating as semi-protected intersections, which have left-turn signal but not exclusive left-turn lanes, because of limited roadways in urban areas. Since the traffic signal methods for the intersections having left-turn signal/lanes cannot be applied to the semi-protected intersection, it is needed to develop a new technique. The purpose of this study was to develop a traffic signal timing method at semi-protected intersections for energy saving and to computerize the method for the practical use. A probability model which could estimate left-turn utilization factors of through traffic during green signal was developed based on field studies. Employing the factors, macro-models to estimate vehicular average delay and proportions of vehicles stopped at the semiprotected intersections were developed. The calculated values of the delay model agreed well with the simulated values of a simulation model using SLAM Ⅱ, a simulation language. Using the two models and the idling fuel consumption rate and the excess fuel consumption per stop-go speed change of vehicles. a traffic signal timing method at semi-protected intersections for energy saving was developed and computerized. The method can be used for other measures of effectiveness such as minimum delay, minimum stop ratio, etc.
Some Problems in the Evaluation of the Transportation Plan
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 5, issue 2, 1987, Pages 37~54
The methods of the transportation plan evaluation have appearently been improved. Yet we are frequently confronted with many problems when we are trying to apply those various methods in practice. This paper aims at reviewing the major problems in the transportation plan evaluation and considering the way to resolve such kinds of problem. The selection of the evaluation criteria and the weighting systems between such criteria are the moat important things in the multi-criteria approaches. In this respect, this paper suggests some alternative evaluation criteria in consideration of the levels and the purpose of the plan. Also the increased capacities and new demands of generated trip are the main effects of the transportation investment. Nevertheless such significant effects have been neglected in the calculation of benefits due to the transportation investment in the past. Therefore this paper suggests that the surplus capacities and new demands of generated trip according to the alternative investment plans should be included in the calculation of benefits for the plan evaluation.
Methoden Zur Beschreibung dar Unfallgeschehens des - Versuch eines Vergleichs Zwischen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der Republik Korea -
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 5, issue 2, 1987, Pages 55~72
The work analyzes the existing situation and defines special problems concerning traffic accidents in the two countries. The report is divided into three parts: 1) Using the global approach of SMEED, the data were evaluated using multiple regression analysis, and homogeneous groups of countries were defined by cluster analysis. In the global approach, the linear model is better than SMEED's non-linear model in explaining the number of fatalities. Among the different groups of countries, the linear approach was found to be better suited for industrialized countries and the non-linear approach better for the developing countries. T도 comparison of traffic fatality data for the Federal Republic the developing countries. The comparison of traffic fatality data for the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Korea showed different regression equations during the same time period. 2) The BOX/JENKINS time series analysis on a monthly basis points out clearly similar seasonal patterns for the two countries over the years studied. The decrease in traffic accidents following the intensification of the safety belt requirement was proved in the ARIMA model. It amounts to 7 to 8 percent fewer personal injury accidents and fatal accidents. The identified increase in safety in the Federal Republic of Germany since the 1970s is mainly due to the reduction of accident severity in residential areas. 3) Speeds and headways on motorways in th3e two countries were also compared. The measurements point out that German road users drive faster, take more risks, and accept shorter time gaps than Korean road users. However, the accident statistics show accident rates for Korea that are several times higher than those in the Federal Republic of Germany.
A Method to Predict Road Traffic Noise Using the Weibull Distribution
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 5, issue 2, 1987, Pages 73~80
Various procedures for evaluation of traffic noise annoyance have been proposed. However, most of the studies of this type are restricted for improving traffic flow. In this paper, a method to predict the road traffic noise is proposed in terms of equivalent continuous A-Weighted sound pressure level (Leq), based on a probability model. First, distribution of the road traffic noise level are investigated. second, the weibull distribution parameters are estimated by using the quantification theory. Finally, a prediction model of the road traffic noise is proposed based on the weibull distribution model The predicted values of the Leq are closely matched the measured data.
A study on Restructuring the Street Network for the Improvement of Traffic Problems in Metropolitan Central Area
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 5, issue 2, 1987, Pages 81~95
In line with the continued growth of car ownership, the traffic problems in central area of metropoles such as Seoul would become increasingly degraded. comparing with most western cities, the problems in Seoul are characterized by the improportionately high rates of intersection delay, station congestion, traffic accidents caused by weaving conflicts and pedestrian congestion. It is caused by the lack of flexibility I street network, which is prerequisite for upholding the efficacy of traffic management and control, resulted from the simplicity of network graph in terms of connectivity, street density and distribution by width. This pattern has been resulted from the prolonged policy pursuing the street-widening of the nagging bottleneck in such a short period since the 1950s, comparing that most western cities had undergone over several centuries an age of horse-and-vehicle transportation. In order to improve the expected traffic problems in central area over the coming periods of motorization, it is imperative to restructure the street network in Central Seoul so that the efficacy of traffic management and control may be operative. Based upon the long-range planning the street network should be restructured by stages so that cenral traffic may be controled by one-way operation and most through-traffic be detoured around fringe area.
Actual Research on the Estimation Technique of the Future Trip in Pusan City.
Journal of Korean Society of Transportation, volume 5, issue 2, 1987, Pages 97~112
The objective of this study is to construct not only trip production and attraction in Pusan but also to study and examine appropriateness of the model positively. Depending on the estimation models of trip production and attraction of each zone that have been constructed in this study, it has been proved that the formula of multiple regression by the explanation variables like the indices of total employees, total students, floor spaces of residentials and floor spaces of educational and cultural areas within the study areas have very high explanatory capacity and appropriateness. It si considered that a study of method on new division, integration or omission etc. of the existing zones preceeding for reduction of calculation quantity and a study of estimation error have to be done for future study, if these models are used actually.
