The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 235~240
In automobile, the introduction of electronically commutated motors has been accompanied by a proliferation of electronic devices. With this proliferation of electronic devices, an emphasis has been placed on EMC issues. This paper is proposed to use SRM as a radiator cooling fan in automotive applications. To drive SRM, Energy efficient C-dump converter is applied. Energy efficient C-dump converter, derived from the conventional C-dump converter, is proposed as a switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive for automotive engine cooling application. It is verified more efficient than other converters through simulation and experiments. And also SRM is valid for automotive applications that have strict EMC standards. Simulation and experimental results obtained on a laboratory prototype are finally presented to evaluate the performance.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 241~248
This paper presents stochastic methodology based fault detection algorithm for induction motor systems. We measure current of healthy induction motors by means of hall sensor systems and then establish its probability distribution. We propose online probability density estimation which is effective in real-time implementation due to its simplicity and low computational burden. In addition, we accomplish theoretical analysis of the proposed estimation to demonstrate its convergence property by using statistical convergence and system stability theories. We apply our fault detection approach to three-phase induction motors and achieve real-time experiment for evaluating its reliability and practicability in industrial fields.

Choi, Jung-Sik ; Ko, Jae-Sub ; Chung, Dong-Hwa ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 249~256
The widely used control theory based design of PI family controllers fails to perform satisfactorily under parameter variation, nonlinear or load disturbance. In high performance applications, it is useful to automatically extract the complex relation that represent the drive behaviour. The use of learning through example algorithms can be a powerful tool for automatic modelling variable speed drives. They can automatically extract a functional relationship representative of the drive behavior. These methods present some advantages over the classical ones since they do not rely on the precise knowledge of mathematical models and parameters. The paper proposes high performance speed and current control of synchronous reluctance motor(SynRM) drive using adaptive learning mechanism-fuzzy neural network (ALM-FNN) and fuzzy logic control (FLC) controller. The proposed controller is developed to ensure accurate speed and current control of SynRM drive under system disturbances and estimation of speed using artificial neural network(ANN) controller. Also, this paper proposes the analysis results to verify the effectiveness of the ALM-FNN, FLC and ANN controller.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 257~262
Capacitor is basically used for the power-factor compensation and sometimes as the passive filter to reduce harmonics of nonlinear load. Since the impedance of capacitor is inversely proportional to the frequency. The harmonic current may result in the problems of voltage distortion and resonance. Capacitor has easily fall under by two harmonic components, a nonlinear load and a distorted utility voltage. The amplified harmonic current and voltage may damage power capacitor. Hence the pre-investigation of harmonic is needed before designing and application the power factor for reducing fault rate. In this paper, we analyzed that voltage and current with harmonics components act on the capacitor under the resonance condition. we concluded that both voltage and current harmonics have an bad effect on the capacitor and current harmonics is a bitter rather than effect by voltage harmonics.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 270~275
In a high performance motor driving system, PI controller which is simple implementation is frequently used. But, PI controller has various problems because of an integrator saturation. Therefore, the various methods of an anti-windup have been studied to solve such problems. But, conventional anti-windup methods have still problem with large overshoot and long settling time in the driving conditions. In this paper, to improve such problem, it is proposed a new anti-windup strategy. Using LPF and PI controller, it is improved an overshoot and reduced settling time. Simulation results have verified usefulness of the proposed method using MATLAB/Simulink.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 297~302
In this paper, we propose advanced screen detector as a tool for selecting the object for tracking and estimating its distance from a screen using fuzzy logic in vision based pointing device. Our system classifies the line component of the input image into horizontal and vertical lines and applies the fuzzy rule to obtain the best line pair which constitute peripheral framework of the screen. The proposed system improves the detection ratio for detecting the screen in relative to the detector used in the previous works for hand-held type vision based pointing device. Also it allows to detect the screen even though a small part of it may be hidden behind other object.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 303~309
Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) has become popular for industrial application, particularly for low medium drives due to the advantages of SRM over the other ac motors: SRM can be manufactured with low cost because it has a simple structure. But, asymmetric bridge converter that generally is used for driving requires two discrete switching devices and freewheeling diodes per phase, and cause the SRM drives to be complicated and to increase the cost of overall system. Therefore, this paper suggests a new type of 4-switch converter for SRM. 4-switch converter topology is studied to provide a possibility for the realization of low cost 3-phase SRM drive system. For effective utilization of the developed system, a new current control algorithm is designed and implemented to produce the desired dynamic performance. With the developed power conversion circuit and control scheme, it is expected that the proposed system can be widely used in commercial applications with reduced system cost.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 310~315
This investigation was performed to study the characteristics of electricity and heat transfer that occur in the cylinder of electrode type humidifier during the process of water evaporation. Measurements were made to obtain the amount of water evaporation, the consumption of electric power, electrical conductivity, etc according to the materials and shapes of electrode. When the humidifier was in non-drain controlled mode, the number and amplitude of current cycle per minute increased gradually with the lapse of time, whereas for drain controlled mode, it decreased about 40[%] after draining water. It was found that for non-drain controlled mode, the thermal efficiency of humidifier which used SS400, STS316 and wire net electrode type was about 95~96[%] and it was 2~4[%] higher than that of drain controlled mode. Also, it was shown that the thermal efficiency of humidifier which used neighboring six-phase electrode balanced electrically was 4[%] higher than that of existing six-phase type.

Cho, Young-Sik ; Cha, Han-Ju ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 316~322
This paper presents an analytical design method of a passive harmonic filter for a three-phase diode rectifier and uses a new transfer function approach in the analysis and design. The transfer function approach derives an analytical formulation of an utility system including passive filters with a basis of Laplace transform and provides a graphical formulation so that a visualized insight into an interaction between individual filter and system response can be attainted. Harmonic impedance, voltage division and current division transfer function are used as a design tool, which makes a calculated filter parameters to satisfy IEEE-519 distortion limits. A simple five-step design procedure is introduced in the filter design, which consists of system analysis, selection of PCC(Point of Common Coupling), filter specification calculation, appropriate filter design for system and filter implementation. Philosophy governing the design procedure is based on a numerical/graphical iterative solution, trial and error with visualization feed-back based on "algebra on the graph". Finally, performance of the designed passive harmonic filter is verified by experiment and shows that 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th harmonics are decreased within IEEE-519 distortion limits, respectively.

Lee, Hyung-Kwon ; Han, Hyeong-Ju ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 323~327
The oscillation is very dangerous in bundled transmission lines, besides 4 bundle transmission lines are very weak for subspan oscillations. In some cases, subspan oscillations are continuously occurred in the same subspan. In order to develop the control method of the above subspan oscillation, this paper suggests a method of applying twin spacers to the subspans. We have carried out some tests to analyze the oscillation phenomena after installing twin spacers on 4 bundle overhead lines, and we got a good effect for controling subspan oscillations by installing twin spacers.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 328~333
In this paper, we have developed high performance SPD(surge protective device) and evaluated the characteristics in comparison with typical SPD used in the inside and outside of the country. The new SPD was composed of MOV(metal oxide varistor), GDT(gas discharge tube) and impedance such as resistors, capacitors or varistors. To estimate operating the characteristic of the SPD which was developed, it was measured surge voltage caused by fault current or surge according to IEC 61000-4-5. As a result it was found that the power supply was cut off by high performance SPD when caused a short-circuit. In addition we could know that it could prevent ELB(earth leakage breaker)'s malfunction caused by surge.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 339~346
Photovoltaic (PV) energy is a renewable and harmless energy which offers many advantages. However, solar energy is an extreme intermittent and inconstant energy source. In order to improve the photovoltaic system efficiency and utilize the solar energy more fully, and the DC current and DC power vary with the irradiation and module temperature, it is necessary to study the characteristics of photovoltaic I-V and P-V according to the external factors. This paper presents the analysis of characteristics of photovoltaic I-V and P-V according to the irradiation and the module temperature. The results show that the DC current and the DC power of the photovoltaic system are increased along with the increasing values of irradiation and module temperature.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 347~350
In this study, it was studied about the improved road light design for drivers and pedestrians using forward or reverse ray-tracing method. Many of conventional road lights are not suitable for drivers and pedestrians because it has some serious problems such as glare effect or randomicity of illuminated areas. It was oriented from customary design method which was pointed at simple target such as luminance or electrical power. But it was not truth any more that the high luminance or electrical power consumption mean more bright and good road light. We studied ray-tracing method for road light reflector design to get the several goals. It means that good road light has easy for drivers and pedestrians eyes and illuminating objects on the road clearly. So, we set the design targets such as uniformity on the road area per one road light, shading angles and continuous luminance uniformity on the long distance road. We designed ideal road light conditions using ray-tracing method. We set the height of drivers and pedestrians eyes and calculated design guideline to make above design targets. Then we designed road light reflector using reverse ray-tracing method. And we achieved same luminance on the road almost half power consumption because we reduced loss of light. We achieved ideal design guide as 75 degrees of shading angles and 0.5 of luminance uniformity on the road area. It is superior than conventional road light ability such as 0.35 of luminance uniformity of 400 watts power consumption lamp. Finally, we suggested reflector design for 250 watts power consumption CDM Iight source.

Kim, Hyang-Kon ; Choi, Chung-Seog ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 357~361
This study performed analysis on the thermal pattern and current characteristics of an LED ((Light Emitting Diode) street lamp. It did this using a TVS (Thermal Video System) to analyze the LED street lamp's thermal pattern, and measured its characteristics using an oscilloscope. The ambient temperature and humidity during the experiment were maintained at
and 50~60[%]. The capacity of the LED street lamp was 120[W] and nine sets of modules were arranged at uniform intervals. On one module, 24 LED lamps were arranged in a radial pattern. The analysis of the thermal diffusion pattern at the front of the LED lamp showed that the maximum surface temperature was approximately
. In addition, there was almost no change in the temperature of the upper cover, and the temperature at the side showed a uniform thermal diffusion pattern. The surface temperature of the converter converting AC to DC increased to approximately
. The analysis results of the thermal characteristics of one LED indicated uniform thermal characteristics for an initial eight minutes. However, the temperature at the center of the LED increased to approximately
after 12 minutes had elapsed. It can be seen from this that the temperature at the center of the LED was higher than the allowable temperature,
of the insulating material for general electrical devices. Therefore, it is necessary to design a lamp in such a way that the plastic insulating material does not come into contact with or get close to the LED lamp. The voltage of the LED lamp converted by the AC/DC converter was measured at DC 27[V] and the current was DC 13[A]. Consequently, it can be seen that in order to secure an adequate light source, it is important to supply a stable current that was greater than the current of other light sources. Therefore, appropriate radiation of heat is required to secure the stability and reliability of the system.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 3, 2009, Pages 362~368
Electrical fires have been occurred continuously in spite of installing ELB. Therefore the concern with the electrical arc-fault that cause the fire has growing. This paper measured series arc fault currents by the method of arc generator test in UL standard 1699. The used analysis methods in this paper are three different ways using DWT(discrete wavelet transform) those are frequently used for the arc fault current signal analysis. The arc fault detection probability is 100 % by method using noise-energy/shoulder-duration ratio of approximation coefficient. As these results, the variation of noise-energy and shoulder-duration ratio of approximation coefficient are founded important factors for the analysis of arc fault.
