The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 385~390
This paper presents a novel active noise control (ANC) system using least mean square (LMS) algorithm and neural network approach for decreasing acoustic noise signals inside high-speed trains. We construct a LMS framework as a nominal ANC system and additionally design an artificial single-layered perceptron model as an auxiliary ANC which is aimed to reduce real-time residuary noise due to its nonstationary and uncertain nature. Parameter vector of the hybrid ANC is determined through online estimation to realize an adaptive ANC configuration by means of the steepest descent algorithm. We achieve simulation experiment to demonstrate the proposed ANC system employing realistic acoustic noise signals measured in Korea Train eXpress (KTX).

Park, Sang-Hoon ; Yoon, Yong-Ho ; Lee, Byoung-Kuk ; Lee, Su-Won ; Won, Chung-Yuen ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 391~396
In this paper, a control algorithm for DC-Link voltage unbalancing compensation of a four-switch inverter for a three-phase BLDC motor drive is proposed. Compared with a conventional six-switch inverter, the split source of the four-switch inverter can be obtained by splitting DC-link capacitor into two capacitors to drive the three phase BLDC motor. The voltages across each of two capacitors are not always equal in steady state because of the unbalance in the impedance of the DC-link capacitors
or the variable current flowed into the capacitor's neutral point in motor control. Despite the unbalance, if the BLDC motor may be run for a long time the voltage across one of the capacitors is more increased. So the unbalance in the capacitors voltages will be accelerated. As a result, The current ripple and torque ripple is increased due to the fluctuation of input current which flows into 3-phase BLDC motor. According to that, the vibration of motor will be increased and the whole system will be instable. This paper presents a control algorithm for DC-Link voltage unbalancing compensation. The sampling from the voltages across each of two capacitors is used to perform the voltage control of DC-Link by using the feedforward controller.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 397~403
In this paper, an exciter current control of a synchronous generator for ships using a compound type digital automatic voltage regulator (DVAR) in order to provide a constant output voltage of the generator is presented. The compound type DAVR is composed of a controller part to adjust output voltage and an power source unit to supply power to the exciter. The controller part, which generates the PWM switching pattern via the PI controller, drives a power MOSFET for bypass to limit the SG's exciter current. The power source unit part is parallel connected to an output terminal of the generator through a reactor and a power CT. The residual magnetic flux of SG provides exciter current to the exciter through the reactor during the initial running or no load state and load current supplies field current to the exciter through the power CT during loading state. This paper confirmed an experiment to verify the validity of compound type DAVR system for controlling output voltage of synchronous generator.
Control of the Subsystem for a Power System
Lee, Yong-Geun ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 404~409
A DC power system has many loads with various functions. In particular, these sizable loads take the form of power electronic converters. When they are tightly regulated, the loads appear as constant power loads and result in negative incremental input impedance. Under certain conditions the effect of such loads on the power system is causes instability. In this paper, converter with a large storage capacitor and a lag compensator is proposed as a DC bus conditioner to mitigate the voltage transients on the bus. In addition, the proposed control approach has the advantage of performing both the functions of mitigating the voltage bus transients and maintaining the level of energy stored. Simulation and experimental results showed that the proposed control method was operated well in a small-scale DC power system that contained subsystems with constant power characteristics, such as DC/DC converters and electrical drives.

Moon, Jong-Fil ; Shon, Jin-Geun ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 410~415
With the implementation of electric power industry reform, the utilities are looking for effective ways to improve the economic efficiency. One area in particular, the equipment maintenance, is being scrutinized for reducing costs while keeping a reasonable level of the reliability in the overall system. Here the conventional RCM requires the tradeoff between the upfront maintenance costs and the potential costs of losing loads. In this paper we describe the issues related to applying so-called the "Reliability-centered Maintenance" (RCM) method in managing electric power distribution equipment. The RCM method is especially useful as it explicitly incorporates the cost-tradeoff of interest, i.e. the upfront maintenance costs and the potential interruption costs, in determining which equipment to be maintained and how often. In comparison, the "Time-based Maintenance" (TBM) method, the traditional method widely used, only takes the lifetime of equipment into consideration. In this paper, the modified Markov model for maintenance is developed. First, the existing Markov model for maintenance is explained and analyzed about transformer and circuit breaker, so on. Second, developed model is introduced and described. This model has two different points compared with existing model: TVFR and nonlinear customer interruption cost (CIC). That is, normal stage at the middle of bathtub curve has not CFR but the gradual increasing failure rate and the unit cost of CIC is increasing as the interruption time is increasing. The results of case studies represent the optimal maintenance interval to maintain the equipment with minimum costs. A numerical example is presented for illustration purposes.

Kim, Jae-Moon ; Kim, Yang-Su ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 427~431
In this study, the dynamic characteristic of a contact wire and pantograph suppling electrical power to high-speed trains are investigated from an electrical response point of view. To analysis power line disturbance by induced contact loss phenomenon for high speed operation, a hardware Simulator which considered contact loss between contact wire and the pantograph as well as contact wire deviation is developed. It is confirmed that a contact wire and pantograph model are necessary for studying the dynamic behavior of the pantograph system. One of the most important needs accompanied by increasing the speed of high-speed train is reduced that an arc phenomenon by loss of contact brings out EMI. In case of a high-speed train using electrical power, as comparison with diesel rolling stock, PLD(Power Line Disturbance) such as harmonic, transient voltage and current, EMI(Electromagnetic Interference), dummy signal injection etc usually occurs. Throughout experiment, it is verified that an arc phenomenon is brought out for simulator operation and consequently conducted noise is flowed in electric circuit by power line disturbance.

Lee, Hyung-Kwon ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 447~450
In order to protect conductors from oscillations or vibrations due to winds, spacer dampers are installed on overhead transmission lines. Generally the spacer damper clamp can move slightly according to oscillation directions, namely in longitudinal, vertical & horizontal directions. This is for reducing fatigue phenomena of the conductor. But the high longitudinal- displacement of the clamp raises a doubt for its necessity. Then this paper carried out oscillation tests by using 4 bundle test lines, to know the relation between longitudinal displacement and oscillation. and suggests design necessity of the longitudinal articulation part for spacer damper clamps.

Jung, Byung-Kyun ; Lee, Jin-Jong ; Jeong, Byeong-Ho ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 455~460
A number of factors combine to make ultraviolet radiation a superior means of water purification for ground water, rainwater harvesting systems and so on. Ultraviolet radiation is capable of destroying all types of bacteria. Additionally, ultraviolet radiation disinfects rapidly without the use of heat or chemical additives which may undesirably alter the composition of water. In a typical operation, water enters the inlet of a UV lamp and flows through the annular space between the quartz sleeve and the outside chamber wall. The irradiated water leaves through the outlet nozzle. Several design features are combined to determine the dosage delivered. The first is Wavelength output of the lamp, the Second is Length of the lamp - when the lamp is mounted parallel to the direction of water flow, the exposure time is proportional to the length of the lamp, the third is Design water flow rate - exposure time is inversely related to the linear flow rate, the forth is Diameter of the purification chamber - since the water itself absorbs UV energy, the delivered dosage diminishes logarithmically with the distance from the lamp. In this paper, It describe the how to design optimal UV disinfection device for ground water and rainwater. To search the optimal design method, it was performed computer simulation with 3D-CFD discrete ordinates model and manufactured prototype. Using proposed design method manufactured prototype applied to disinfection test and proved satisfied performance.

Kim, Ju-Han ; Han, Sang-Ok ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 476~482
This paper describes the development of capacitive sensor for the diagnosis of liquid dielectrics, which is widely used as the electrical insulating oil of transformer, circuit breaker, cable and etc. To survey the dielectric properties of the virgin and aged electrical insulating oils, we utilized the highly precise measuring system, using the principle of cross capacitance. The measured properties were used to determine the design factors of the sensor. Then the factors were optimized with the help of computational analysis. To evaluate diagnosis by the sensor, we performed accelerated thermal aging test about electrical insulating oils. The condition of aged specimens were investigated by measurements of relative permittivity i.e. capacitance change by capacitive sensor. And to evaluate the hysteresis characteristics with the change of temperature, we constructed a testing system, which was composed with vacuum drying oven, oil chamber and measuring instruments, such as LCR meter, MUX and so forth. Through the results of this investigation, we confirmed the superior characteristics of the newly developed sensor.

Shon, Jin-Geun ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 483~489
Electrolytic capacitors are used in variety of equipments as smoothening element of the power converters because it has high capacitance for its size and low price. Electrolytic capacitors, which is most of the time affected by aging effect, plays a very important role for the power electronics system quality and reliability. Therefore it is important to estimate the parameter of an electrolytic capacitor to predict the failure. This objective of this paper is to propose a new method to detect the rise of equivalent series resistor(ESR) in order to realize the online failure prediction of electrolytic capacitor for DC output filter of power converter. The ESR of electrolytic capacitor estimated from RMS result of filtered waveform(BPF) of the ripple capacitor voltage/current. Therefore, the preposed online failure prediction method has the merits of easy ESR computation and circuit simplicity. Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the performance of the proposed on-line method.

Yeo, In-Sik ; Ko, Young-Min ; Lee, Ki-Sik ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 490~494
In this paper, how the temperature of a varistor changes when
surge currents and/or DC leakage currents are applied on it, respectively, are investigated. The temperature change in varistor is related with injection energy and leakage current. which is the integration of power in time. By the surge current test, we found that the temperature jump is proportional to the level of surge current with slant 52.535 and has no relation with the ambient temperature. And by the DC leakage current test, the difference in temperatures between varistor and ambient is proportional to the magnitude of leakage current. The slope of measured line(the temperature difference vs. the leakage current) shows alteration around
. The varistors can not be used more than
region any more. From the above experimental results, we can conclude that data of the surge current test and also those of DC leakage current test can predict the performance of varistors of which the surge protective devices are made.

Kim, Jae-Hoon ; Han, Sang-Ok ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 499~504
The analysis for furan compound has provided a complementary technique to dissolved gas analysis(DGA) for monitoring transformers when total concentration of CO and
dissolved in oil only has been evaluated the aging of insulating paper. But, the analysis of furanic compounds by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) has been important more than DGA recently. Because it has been known that furanic components in transformer oil have come only from the decomposition of insulating paper. Therefore we have manufactured accelerating aging cell which was aged during 60 hours at 100, 150, 180 and
, respectively, for investigating the characteristics of cellulose paper by thermal using analysis for CO,
and furan compound.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 511~515
For detecting of the faulty insulator, Correlation Propagation Neural Networks(CPNN) has been proposed. Faulty insulator is reduced the rate of insulation extremely, and taken the results dirty and injured. It is necessary to detect the faulty insulator and exchange the new one. And thus, we have designed the CPNN to be detected that insulators by the real time computation method through the inter-node diffusion. In the network, a node corresponds to a state in the quantized input space. Each node is composed of a processing unit and fixed weights from its neighbor nodes as well as its input terminal. Information propagates among neighbor nodes laterally and inter-node interpolation is achieved. 1-D CPNN hardware has been implemented with general purpose. Experiments with static and dynamic signals have been done upon the CPNN hardware. Through the results of simulation experiments, we define the ability of real-time detecting the faulty insulators.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 526~531
This paper suggests the dehydration and RDF(Refuse Derived Fuel) production of organic sludge, livestock manure and sewerage sludge causing environmental problems, with hydrothermal pre-treatment process. The renewable technology from the organic wastes must involve short treatment time required, reusable energy source, anti-odor and viruses, low cost for the treatment, and well-fertilization. The hydrothermal pre-treatment process promotes to evaporate moisture in the sludge after being shortly treated in a reactor, which is supplied steam and heat by an external boiler, due to the pressure with steam breaks the cell walls of the sludge, so this process removes the internal moisture of the cell. Then, the treated sludge(solid-state) is mixed with waste vinyls called RDF(6,706kcal/kg).

DAFC(direct alcohol fuel cell) takes the same structure and operational principle with PEMFC(Proton exchange membrane fuel cell). However, DAFC, which uses liquid alcohol instead of hydrogen as fuel, is able to be used as a portable power for small-scaled electronic devices such as MP3, PMP, and mobile phone because alcohol is quite convenient steady-state compound to carry and store it. This paper presents the OCV(open circuit voltage) characteristics of the cases which are alcohol species and different weight rate of ethanol, respectively. The OCV of methanol fuel cell is slightly higher 0.2V than ethanol one, and 8% wt. rate ethanol is rated as the most appropriate fuel for DAFC.

Green car such as a hybrid electrical vehicle and fuel cell vehicle is developed as a commercial target. UN/ECE/WP29 is developing GTR of HFCV and establishing the regulation and standard of electrical safety by ELSA. The regulation and standard about Electrical safety of vehicle are prescribed in ISO, UN/ECE, FMVSS, Japanese Attachment and so on, in case of insulation resistance is referred to keep more than 100/Vdc, 500/Vac. However, accurate method to measure insulation resistance agreeable to structure of vehicle does not exist now, it is actually that correctness of measurement drops according to the feature of battery and fuel cell stack. In this paper, the method to measure insulation resistance for protection against electrical shock by direct contact or indirect contact in Green Car will be indicated by making a comparison between the insulation measurement in standard of electrical safety and the experiment results for HEV and HFCV.

Lee, Kyung-Sup ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 602~608
In this thesis, output voltage, current and power of solar module were classified by irradiation from data of overall operating characteristics collected for one year in order to manage efficient photovoltaic generation system and deliver maximum power. In addition, from these data, correlations between irradiation of photovoltaic cell and amount of power given by photovoltaic cell was quantitatively examined to deduce optimization of the design and construction of photovoltaic generation system. As I-V characteristics according to a temperature range of 10~50[
], the area of I-V characteristics were increased with an increase in temperature. Since this area corresponds to the power, output power is thought to have increased with temperature. As output power characteristics according to a temperature range of 10~50[
], output power was increased with an increase in temperature. Since output power increases with temperature increase, the result corresponds well to the related equation on temperature and output power. As I-V characteristics according to a irradiation range of 100~900 [
], voltage and current were increased with an increase in irradiation. The result is thought of as an increase in output power with increasing irradiation. As output power characteristics according to a irradiation range of 100~900 [
], output power was increased with increasing irradiation. This result corresponds well to the related equation on irradiation and output power.

Kim, Hyang-Kon ; Choi, Chung-Seog ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 58, issue 4, 2009, Pages 632~632
The purpose of this study is to present the range of defects mentioned in the Product Liability (PL) and to establish an objective basis and grounds for the analysis of accidents expected to happen by analyzing and presenting the external flame pattern and electrical characteristics of an LED streetlight lamp, a new lighting lamp. From the analysis of the cross-section of a cable carbonized by an external flame, it was observed that the wire's strand and insulation material had solidly adhered, and that greater voids were formed at the surface than at the center. Irregular carbide lumps were formed in the globe directly exposed to the flame, and the globe carbonized by the indirect flame showed characteristics that they had melted and flowed downward. It was found that the forward and backward resistances of the normal LED were approximately 1.74 [
] and 140 [
], respectively. The lamp burnt by the strong flame exhibited infinite forward and backward resistances and the LED did not emit light. The carbonized LED lamp was gray and exhibited fine delaminations. According to the Product Liability, a product defect signifies a simple product defect. Most of the defects were caused by the lack of stability, and the defect of the product itself occurred during the design and manufacture. The defects in warnings and markings include an insufficiency of handling manuals and warnings, expressive warranty violations, defective markings, etc. In order to prevent an accident resulting from a product, it is necessary to prepare safety warnings and documentation, establish clear-cut lines of liabilities, and subscribe insurances. However, it could be seen that important factors against the Product Liability were product improvement, response to compensation requests and law suits, credit restoration, etc.

A reformer, which produces hydrogen from natural gas, plays a major role for producing quality hydrogen to fuel-cell system. In this paper, fuel processor is designed to deliver hydrogen(75%) from the reformer to 200W fuel-cell system, and the electrical output power of the fuel-cells is examined by being injected different hydrogen concentrations to the system. We verified that the output power characteristics of the fuel-cells with 75% reformed hydrogen was lower about 7% than the case of pure hydrogen supplied. The type of reformer in this experiment takes SMR(Steam methane reforming) process, and the temperature variation characteristics of reforming process by reactions are examined in operation.
