Chung, Koo-Hyung ; Kim, Bal-Ho ; Lee, Jong-Joo ; Kim, Hak-Man ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 245~252
This paper proposes a constrained multi-area dispatch scheduling algorithm applicable to interconnected power system operations. The dispatch scheduling formulated as an MIP problem can be efficiently computed by GBD algorithm. GBD guarantees adequate computation speed and solution convergence by reducing the dimension of the dispatch scheduling problem. In addition, the regional decomposition technique based on ADM is introduced to obtain efficient inter-temporal OPF solution. It can find the most economic dispatch schedule incorporating power transactions without each regional utility's private information open.
Performance Evaluation of Advanced Frequency Estimation Technique using 765kV Modeling Data
Park, Chul-Won ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 253~257
The frequency is an important operation parameter for the control, protection, and stability of a power system. The frequency as a key index of power quality can be indicative of system abnormal conditions and disturbances. Due to the sudden change in generation and loads or faults in power system, the frequency is supposed to deviate from its nominal value. It is essential that the frequency must be maintained very close to its nominal frequency. An accurate monitoring of the power frequency is essential to optimal operation and prevention for wide area blackout. As most conventional frequency estimation schemes are based on DFT filter, it has been pointed out that the gain error could cause defects when the frequency is deviated from nominal value. This paper presents an advanced frequency estimation technique using gain compensation to improve the performance of DFT filter based techniques. To evaluate performance of the proposed algorithm, the 765kV T/L system in Korea is simulated by EMTP-RV software. The proposed technique can reduce the gain error caused when the power system frequency deviates from nominal value.
A Robust Watermark System for MPEG-2 Video Against Geometric and Bitrate Varying Attacks
Hwang, Seon-Cheol ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 258~262
This paper describes a watermarking system that has the robust characteristics against the geometric attacks of resizing and the bitrate varying attacks. While the existing watermark methods of marking on AC in DCT coefficients are weak against the geometric attacks, the methods of tiny increasing the DC in DCT coefficients and the system implementations are suggested in this paper. We measure the differences between the original images and the watermarked images and the detecting rate from the geometric and bitrate attacked images. Results of experiments show that our method is robust against that attacks.

Chung, Koo-Hyung ; Roh, Jae-Hyung ; Cho, Ki-Seon ; Kim, Hak-Man ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 263~267
Although electricity market structures may be different from each country, they have a long-term forward market and a short-term spot market in general. Particularly, a bilateral contract transacted at a long-term forward market fixes the electricity price between a genco and a customer so that the customer can avoid risk due to price-spike in the spot market. The genco also can make an efficient risk-hedging strategy through the bilateral contract. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism for deriving the optimal bilateral contract price using game theory. This mechanism can make the customer reveal his true willingness to purchase so that an adequate bilateral contract price is derived.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 268~274
Urban rail transit brings the benefits of various aspects of society. With the advent of fast and large trains, however, risk and scale of accidents have increased. Despite the fact that there is various safety features built into the modern metros, train faults happen from time to time. Especially, as urban railway vehicles in Korea have become deterioration rapidly, more advanced diagnosis methods are required to prevent various accidents. In this paper, we present diagnosis method for electrical wires to guarantee secure driving and authenticity more accurately in urban railway vehicles. Although there are kinds of conventional methods based on insulation resistance measurement and withstand test, it is extremely difficult to effectively diagnose obsolete equipments such as electrical wires and cables not new ones. This study is focused on development of diagnosis method and establishment of evaluation standard for electrical wires in urban railway vehicles.

Woo, Chun-Hee ; Lee, Bo-In ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 275~288
In order to improve the quality of electricity in large scale power systems, stability of power system has to be achieved. This can be done by the means of preventative diagnosis of power equipments and protection, monitoring and control of the power system. Since the recent adoption of digital controllers, an improvement in stability was observed; in particular, IED, which contained self-diagnostic abilities such as fault tolerance, allowed for automatic recovery via redundancy or switching-over functions should there be faults with the equipments. Furthermore, communication lines have been hugely simplified, thus adding to the improvement in stability significantly. Taking these error reports and forecasting emergency reports and by effectively responding to them in the overiding controlling systems, high levels of system stability can be obtained. Power Management System that is being applied to automated power sub-stations, takes the IEC61850 international standard as its specification. In this paper, additional research into achieving stability of already developed PMS system and also the stability of the overall system was carried out, and the results of development of communication servers, which play a pivotal role in connecting systems, are stated.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 279~287
Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) adjustable speed drives offer significant advantages over induction motor drives in a wide variety of industrial applications such as high power density, high efficiency, improved dynamic performance and reliability. This paper proposes efficiency optimization control of IPMSM drive using adaptive fuzzy learning controller(AFLC). In order to optimize the efficiency the loss minimization algorithm is developed based on motor model and operating condition. The d-axis armature current is utilized to minimize the losses of the IPMSM in a closed loop vector control environment. The design of the current based on adaptive fuzzy control using model reference and the estimation of the speed based on neural network using ANN controller. The controllable electrical loss which consists of the copper loss and the iron loss can be minimized by the optimal control of the armature current. The minimization of loss is possible to realize efficiency optimization control for the proposed IPMSM. The optimal current can be decided according to the operating speed and the load conditions. This paper considers the design and implementation of novel technique of high performance speed control for IPMSM using AFLC. Also, this paper proposes speed control of IPMSM using AFLC1, current control of AFLC2 and AFLC3, and estimation of speed using ANN controller. The proposed control algorithm is applied to IPMSM drive system controlled AFLC, the operating characteristics controlled by efficiency optimization control are examined in detail.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 288~292
Recently, in energy storage system, the EDLC is paid attention as a new environmentally friendly energy storage element. This capacitor has higher energy density than the electrolytic capacitor. Also, this capacitor has a lot of advantage such as no maintenance, longer life cycle and faster charge-discharge time than the battery system. But the EDLC must have a each charge-discharge controller to effectively control, an energy design method circuit to use effectively energy, and several compensation techniques to control a optimal operating. In this respect, this study suggests major parameters to effectively represent the characteristics of EDLC, the measurement methods of those parameters have been investigated with experiments, and the interpretation about the buck/boost DC/DC converter for the operation of EDLC.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 293~297
Next generation concentrating photovoltaic technologies could have a large-scale impact on world electricity production once they will become economically attractive and grid parity will be reached. Multi-junction solar cells will be characterised by a high value of the cell economical performance index if the cells were able to operate at high concentration level. Concentrating the sunlight by optical devices like lenses or mirrors reduces the area of expensive solar cells or modules, and, moreover, increases their efficiency. Accurate and reliable tracking is an important issue to maintain high the CPV system output power. Further, for high concentration CPV systems, the actual tracker cost is about 20% of the total CPV system cost. In this paper high-concentration is defined as systems using concentration ratios well above 100 times the one sun intensity and trackerlss CPV system studied. Using sphericalness lens and parallel MJ cell connection method were suggested and achieved experiment on a clear day in summer. Development of these high performance multi-junction CPV module promises to accelerate growth in photovoltaic power generation.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 298~304
Recently, the audible sound level of power transformer has been reduced due to development of new material and enhancement of manufacturing technology. There is lack of research on the audible sound of winding and cooling fan because the research on reduction of audible sound is concentrated on the core sound. Therefore this paper describes 3 kinds(core, winding and cooling fan) of transformer sound source. Also this paper analyzes the effect of load sound and cooling fan sound on the total transformer sounds. As the results, total sound level of 79dBA class transformer rises 0.2～0.3dB due to effect of load sound and rises 2.1～3.5dB due to effect of cooling fan sound. Also, total sound level of 55dBA class transformer rises 2.3～2.9dB due to effect of load sound and rises 1.9～3.5dB due to effect of cooling fan sound.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 305~310
DC electricity feeder system operating in the urban railway is typically a feedback circuit consisted of the contact wire and electric railway vehicle via rail. But stray current is flowed on a structure that is not part of the intended electrical circuit with respect to a given structure. This paper presents comparison analysis of field test cases based on criteria of electrolytic corrosion protection of buried metallic structures adjacent to DC traction systems. As a result of it, we confirmed that measurement methods are different from each other about the same tests. Therefore measurement methods to prevent electrolytic corrosion need to establish electrical facilities standards to be applied domestic.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 325~329
Capacitor has been used principally for the power factor compensation long ago. However now it does as passive filter to reduce harmonics of nonlinear load with reactor. Most of the customer's low-voltage feeder has been designed with approximately balanced and connected at the 3 phase four wire system. But voltage and current unbalance is appeared by the mixing operation of single or three phase load etc. The addition of reactor at the condenser may rise its terminal voltage. Voltage and current values above rating can act on electrical stress on the condenser. In this paper, we calculated and measured that voltage, current and capacity of condenser are changed under the voltage balance. We conclude that magnitude and deviation of phase voltage act on major point of electrical stress.
A Study on Combination Technology of a Transformer and a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter
Choi, Hyo-Sang ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers P, volume 59, issue 3, 2010, Pages 330~334
We tried to combine a transformer with a superconducting element and investigated the current limiting characteristics. When a superconducting element was connected to third winding of the transformer, the fault current was limited to about 90 % effectively. The fault current and consumption power were able to be controlled by the turn's ratio of secondary and third windings. It gives flexibility of the rating of a transformer in the power grid. As a result, power burden of a superconducting element was reduced by the decrease of turn's ratio in third winding of a transformer. It was because the voltage behavior of a superconducting element was dependent on turn's ratio of a transformer while the current characteristic was independent.
