A comparison of the operating characteristics of the synchronous generator and induction generator applied to the small hydroelectric power plant

In general, A synchronous generator is higher than the voltage stability of the induction generator. However, induction generator has many advantages rather than a synchronous generator in terms of price and maintenance. So, coverage rate of the induction generator is gradually increasing in small hydroelectric power station rather than 1000kW recently. In order to increase the penetration of induction generator, pre-analysis of the operation of the generator is needed. In this study, we analyzed for the problems that occur when synchronous generator and induction generator of 1500kW is connected to the distribution system.
Analysis of Battery Performance Test for DC Power System in Nuclear Power Plant

Function of battery bank stores energy for DC load in general, and DC power system of the nuclear power plant is used to supply DC loads for safety- featured instrumentation and control such as inverter, class 1E power system control and indication, and station annunciation. Class 1E DC power system must provide a power for the design basis accident conditions, and adequate capacity must be available during loss of AC power and subsequent safe shutdown of the plant. In present, batteries of Class 1E DC power system of the nuclear power plant uses lead-acid batteries. Class 1E batteries of nuclear power plants in Korea are summarized in terms of specification, such as capacity, discharge rate, bank configuration and discharge end voltage, etc. This paper summarizes standards of determining battery size for the nuclear power plant, and analyzes duty cycle for the class 1E DC power system of nuclear power plant. Then, battery cell size is calculated as 2613Ah according to the standard. In addition, this paper analyzes performance test results during past 13 years and shows performance degradation in the battery bank. Performance tests in 2001 and 2005 represent that entire battery cells do not reach the discharge-end voltage. Howeyer, the discharge-end voltage is reached in 14.7% of channel A (17 EA), 13.8% of channel B (16 EA), 5.2% of channel C (6 EA) and 16.4% of channel D (19 EA) at 2011 performance test. Based on the performance test results analysis and size calculation, battery capacity and degradation by age in Korearn nuclear power plant is discussed and would be used for new design.
Development of Remote Control and Monitoring System for HID Street-lamp Based on Low Cost Zigbee Communication Network

In this paper, remote control and surveillance monitoring system of HID street-lamp using low-cost type of Zigbee communication module was developed. A plurality of capacitors with different capacity are attached to magnetic ballast for HID lamps. Changes in the amount of illumination can be adjusted by the changes in capacity so that the electric energy can be reduced. In Zigbee communication module, a ATmega128L microprocessor is used and in main CPU, ARM9 Core is used to construct a low-cost smart system. In surveillance monitoring systems, the system was configured to remote monitoring of presence of error in the lamp abnormalities, the status of leakage current and abnormalities of ballasts and capacitors and the validity of the proposed empirical experiment was confirmed.
Modeling and Simulation of Loss of Excitation of Hydro Generator Control System

Generator protection device has to detects an internal fault conditions in generator and abnormal operating conditions must be due to the hazards. Loss of excitation may cause generator itself failure as well as serious operating problem in power system, and then requires an appropriate response of generator protection device. Details modeling of generator control system and analysis of transient states in generator are important for optimal operation in power plants. In addition, the fault simulation data are also used for testing the characteristics of IED. In this paper, the hydro generator control system using PSCAD/EMTDC, visual simulation for power systems, was modeled. The generator control system which is composed of generator, turbine, exciter, governor was implemented. The parameters of generator control system model were obtained from field power plant. Loss of excitation simulations were performed while varying the fixed load. Several signals analysis were also performed so as to analyze transients phenomena.
Implementation of IEEE 802.15.4 Channel Analyzer for Evaluating WiFi Interference

In this paper, an implementation of concurrent backoff delay process on a single chip with IEEE 802.15.4 hardware and 8051 processor core that can be used for analyzing the interference on IEEE 802.15.4 channels due to WiFi traffics is studied. The backoff delay process of IEEE 802.15.4 CSMA-CA algorithm is explained. The characteristics of random number generator, timer, and CCA register included in the single chip are described with their control procedure in order to implement the process. A concurrent backoff delay process to evaluate multiple IEEE 802.15.4 channels is proposed, and a method to service the associated tasks at sequentially ordered backoff delay events occurring on the channels is explained. For the implementation of the concurrent backoff delay process on a single chip IEEE 802.15.4 hardware, the elements for the single channel backoff delay process and their control procedure are used to be extended to multiple channels with little modification. The medium access delay on each channel, which is available after execution of the concurrent backoff delay process, is displayed on the LCD of an IEEE 802.15.4 channel analyzer. The experimental results show that we can easily identify the interference on IEEE 802.15.4 channels caused by WiFi traffics in comparison with the way displaying measured channel powers.
Prototype Hardware Design and Optimal Algorithm of PC Based Start·Stop Control System for Tidal Generation

Tidal generation has become one of environmentally friendly new and renewable future sources of energy. The Sihwa Tidal Power Plant in South Korea, which was imported from abroad by turnkey type in 2011, connected to the power system in 2012, and is currently under commercial operation. However, leading companies are reluctant to disclose their technologies associated with the control systems and are not cooperative in technology transfers, making it a high priority to develop core technologies in South Korea. In order to develop a start stop control system for tidal generation, this paper presents the optimal algorithm for decision making and prototype of hardware design. First, control systems in tidal power, such as plant operation control, data interfaces between systems, monitoring and control points of the control system, are analyzed. The software development and PC based emulator processes for optimization algorithm processing are described. Finally, verification of the algorithm implementation, hardware platform for start stop control device, and implementation of prototype control system were discussed.
Development of Uninterruptible Power Supply with Voltage Sag Restorer Function

In this paper, UPS, with a built-in instantaneous sag drop compensation features, was developed to improve performance. The improved UPS, using instantaneous moving average method, compensates by quickly measuring the voltage and series inverter of half-bridge type, using line-interactive method that links with the voltage of the battery and power source, was developed. In addition, by developing a parallel inverter that uses a high-efficiency PWM switching method, overall UPS system was enhanced. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, single-phase 5[kVA] UPS systems were designed and the experimental system was constructed. The low-cost type of Cortex-M3 module CPU STM32F103R8T6 (32[bit]) is attached and the switching time of mode transfer was set within 4 [ms]. THD of the linear load operates in less than 3[%], and the stability of the output voltage operates in approximately
range. The superior performance of the operations was confirmed with the system set as above.
Study on the Railway Station Building's Electrical Capacity Analysis and the Lighting Load

Energy saving is as important as developments of green energy and alternative energy. The need for development of high-efficiency lighting apparatus further increased. This paper compared with the size of electrical equipment and analyzed the size of electrical capacity for the railway station building. Also discussed energy saving measures that can be achieved by using high-efficacy lighting fixtures, and the percentage of the lighting load capacity of the entire building.
A Study on the Temperature Characteristics Analysis in Tunnel using Loss Factor

To cope with the ever increasing electric power demands in metropolitan areas, a greater underground cable transmission capacity is required. In general, it must be determined whether the temperature in the tunnel maintains the maximum allowable temperature. In order to improve this point, it is used to the loss factor. But, for economic cooling, it is problem to use such loss factor in this country. In this study, based on the load factor in this country, technique for calculating the loss factor has been presents. The suggested method has been tested in a sample section using the computer and the results have shown the usefullness of the suggested method.
A Study on Start·Stop System at Water Turbine-Generator for Tidal Power Plant

Tidal power is one of new and renewable energy sources. Tidal power is generated by using the gap in the water level between the water outside and inside the embankment. All tidal power plant in Korea were being operated by import of turn-key from abroad. The know-how and technology which are the most important to build predictive control system has become increasingly difficult to obtain from advanced countries because most of them avoid to transfer, which the domestic development of the control system is needed. In this paper, a study on start stop system at water turbine-generator for tidal power plant at the beginning of development was presented. For improvement the efficiency and develope of core technology of the start stop system, the technique and characteristics of tidal power, modeling, maximum generation calculation method, and optimal control of joint control system in Sihwa tidal power plant were studied.
Wet Environmental and Mechanical Characteristics for Polyethylene-based Insulating Materials

In this study, four kinds of specimens of PE(polyethylene)-based insulating materials were prepared for selecting the optimum insulation materials in a wet environment. The specimens were tested by various methods, the anti tracking test, the transmittance test in the water vapor transmittance(WVT) and the abrasion resistive test, etc. The HDPE(high-density polyethylene) specimen was showed excellent property in the tracking resistance test and the lowest transmittance in water vapor transmittance test. In the abrasion resistive test, the LLDPE(linear low-density polyethylene) and MDPE(medium-density Polyethylene) were showed excellent mechanical properties. The value of cut-through resistance for MDPE and HDPE were superior to that for LLDPE and LDPE(low-density polyethylene).
