Current Differential Relaying Algorithm for Power Transformer Protection Operating in Conjunction with a CT Compensating Algorithm

Current differential relays may maloperate during magnetic inrush and over-excitation because a significant differential current is produced. To prevent maloperation, the relays adopt some harmonic components included in the differential current. The harmonic restraints may increase the security of a relay but cause the operating time delay of a relay when an internal fault occurs. Moreover, the operating time delay is more increased if a current transformer (CT) is saturated. This paper describes a current differential relaying algorithm for power transformer protection with a compensating algorithm for the secondary current of a CT. The comparative study was conducted with and without the compensating algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm was investigated when the measurement CT (C400) and the protection CT (C400) are used. The proposed algorithm can compensate the distorted current of a CT and thus reduce the operating time delay of the relay significantly for an internal fault with CT saturation.
A Development of Surface Temperature Monitoring System for Underground Tunnel Cable Joint using Wireless Sensor

In the electric power industry, it is important that the supply of energy must be guaranteed. Many power utilities control and supervise the transmission line to avoid power failures. In case of underground tunnel, some troubles are reported in cable joint. To stabilize the power, it is needed to monitor the cable joint. Many researches of cable joint monitoring have been going on by partial discharge measurement and temperature measurement using optical cable. These methods need much cost to install and maintain, so it is only used in critical transmission line. In this research, we use wireless sensor technology, because of its low cost and easy installation. We develop the temperature monitoring system for cable joint. Temperature sensor is installed on the surface of cable joint and sends data to server through router node using wireless network. Generally Ad hoc routing is searched in wireless network. However, in this research, we design the static linear routing mechanism, which is suitable for electric power line monitoring and analyze the life time of the sensor node by measuring the amount of the battery consumption.
Agent-Based Distance Relaying Algorithm for Phase-to-Ground Faults

This paper presents a distance relaying algorithm for phase-to-ground faults in transmission lines under Multi-Agent protection environment. In normal condition, a distance relay agent stores the latest states, e.g., voltage of source side, voltage of the opposite side and the loading conditions, etc., through communication between the agents. Once a fault occurs, the relay calculates the fault location using the knowledge about the states just before the fault happens. This stand-alone operation is to improve reliability under the fault condition at which the accuracy or time required for communication may not be guaranteed. The mathematical expression of fault location is derived through loop analysis, before hand, in the manner that both fault current from the opposite end and fault resistance are included implicitly so that their effects are minimized. The suggested algorithm is applied to a typical transmission system with two power sources on both ends to show its effectiveness.
Generating Unit Maintenance Scheduling Considering Regional Reserve Constraints and Transfer Capability Using Hybrid PSO Algorithm

This paper presents a new generating unit maintenance scheduling algorithm considering regional reserve margin and transfer capability. Existing researches focused on reliability of the overall power systems have some problems that adequate reliability criteria cannot be guaranteed in supply shortage regions. Therefore specific constraints which can treat regional reserve ratio have to be added to conventional approaches. The objective function considered in this paper is the variance (second-order momentum) of operating reserve margin to levelize reliability during a planning horizon. This paper focuses on significances of considering regional reliability criteria and an advanced hybrid optimization method based on PSO algorithm. The proposed method has been applied to IEEE reliability test system(1996) with 32-generators and a real-world large scale power system with 291 generators. The results are compared with those of the classical central maintenance scheduling approaches and conventional PSO algorithm to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm proposed in this paper.
A Development on Consumer Portal System based on Advanced Metering Infrastructure

As the electric power industry has been revolutionarily transformed such that the distributed energy resources have been interconnected with power systems and a variety of energy service providers have been appeared, the need of Consumer Energy Portal as a core of two-way communication and service infrastructure between power suppliers and consumers has been gradually increased. Consumer Energy Portal can be thought of as a combination of hardware and software enabling two-way communication between energy service providers and equipment within the consumers' premises or a physical and logical link between consumers' in-building networks and wide-area access networks. In other words, Consumer Energy Portal can make the way the power industry has been traditionally operated the web-based way, enabling two-way interactions between energy service providers and consumers and mutual networking between end users' equipment. Thus, Consumer Energy Portal can be a kind of Service portal that provides new value-added services and efficient power operations that in the past. In this paper, for ESPs' integrated resources management, demand side management and value-added service provision, we have established the two-way access network that can gather real-time metering data using ZigBee technology and control physically networked equipment.
A Study on the Evaluation Algorithm of Distribution Systems Interconnected with Dispersed Generations

This paper deals with the optimal evaluation algorithms for voltage regulation in the case where new dispersed generations(DG) are operated in distribution systems. It is very difficult and complicated to handle the interconnection issues for proper voltage managements, because professional skills and enormous amounts of data for the evaluations are required. The typical evaluation algorithms mainly depending on human ability and quality of data acquired, inevitably cause the different results for the same issue, so unfair and subjective evaluations are unavoidable. In order to overcome these problems, the paper proposes reasonable and general algorithms based on the standard model system and proper criterion, which offers the fair and objective evaluations in any case. The proposed algorithms are divided by two main themes. One is an optimal algorithm for the voltage control of multiple voltage regulators in order to deliver suitable voltage to as many customers as possible, and the other is a proper evaluation algorithm for the voltage management at normal and emergency conditions. The results from a case study show that the proposed methods can be a practical tool for the voltage management in distribution systems including dispersed sources.
Design and Fabrication of a Conductively Cooled Cryostat by Cryocooler

In order to measure the superconducting transition temperature, the critical current and the alternating current(AC) loss on short samples of high temperature superconductor, a cryocooler cooled cryostat has been designed and built. Two closed-cycle coolers provide cooling with an ultimate sample temperature below 16K. Temperature regulation is provided by 50W of electrical heater that opposes the cooling power from the cold heads. Temperature control feedback is by means of a cernox temperature sensor co-located with the heaters on the second stage of the cold head. Additional temperature sensors are located on the sample mount(B1), on the CVI cold head(B2) and on the Dakin cold head(B3). AC losses on the sample high temperature superconductor were measured at 30K so that the developed device performance was evaluated. In this paper, the design, fabrication and test results on the cryocooler cooled cryostat are presented.
Electric Safety Protection Device of High Speed for Incapable Operation of ELB and MCCB Using the Low Voltage Distribution Line

This paper is studied on a novel Electric Safety Protection Device (ESPD) of high speed for incapable operation of Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELB) and Molded_case Circuit Breaker (MCCB) using the low voltage distribution line. The major causes of electrical fire are classified to short circuit fault, overload fault, electric leakage and electric contact failure. The occurrence factor of the fire is electric arc or spark accompanied with electrical faults. Residual Current Protective Device (RCD), that is ELB and MCCB, of high sensitivity type used at low voltage wiring cuts off earth leakage and overload, but the RCD can't cut off electric arc or spark to be a major factor of electrical fire. As the RCDs which are applied low voltage distribution panel are prescribed to rated breaking time about 30[ms] (KS C 4613), the RCDs can't perceive to the periodic electric arc or spark of more short wavelength level. To be improved on such problem, this research development is proposed to a novel ESPD of high speed to trip of distribution line on electric arc or spark due to electrical fire. Some experimental results of the proposed ESPD are confirmed to the validity of the analytical results.
A Study On the Phase Advance Angle of High Speed Operation for 7 Phase BLOC Motor Drives

According to previously published paper the phase advance angle is adopted to the BLDC motor drive with high speed. The report proposed describes the optimum algorism that phase current is in phase with the initial flat region of back EMF. This report studies the need of more leading phase advance angle compared with in phase concept between phase current and back EMF. In case of high reactance this report proposes the more phase advance angle than in phase. The test results more rms value of phase current and output power due to more phase advance angle than in phase. It will be helped the high power operation of BLDC motor at high speed.
Efficiency Characteristic of Three-Level Converter

This paper presents the Efficiency Characteristic of Three-Level Converter. Three-Level DC/DC Converter presented in this paper is used a phase shift control with a flying capacitor in the primary side to achieve ZVS(Zero-Voltage-Switching) for the switch. This converter reduces the voltage stress across the main switch to half of input voltage. It shows the main reason of efficiency diminution, comparing of input and output voltage. Also, the loss analysis of each component and the various losses in the circuit are proposed in this paper. The result of the efficiency characteristics are verified using 3kW prototype.
Development of High-Performance Single-Phase Line-Interactive Dynamic Voltage Restorer

This paper describes the development of a high-performance single-phase line-interactive Dynamic voltage Restorer, which is composed of an H-bridge inverter and super-capacitors. The operational feasibility was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software, and experimental works with 3kVA prototype. The developed system can compensates the input voltage sag and interruption within 2ms, in which the maximum allowable duration of voltage interruption is 1.5 seconds. It can be effectively used to compensate the voltage interruption in the sensitive load, such as computer, communication equipment, automation equipment, and medical equipment. The developed system has a simple structure to be easily implemented with commercially available components and to be highly reliable in operation.
Modeling for Traction system of the Vehicle including Running Characteristics

In this paper, we propose the mathematical model for the vehicle system including running characteristics. The well defined model for a system is necessary to study and to enhance system performance. To model the dynamic properties of vehicle system, we have considered two fundamental parts. The first part is the motion equations for vehicle based on Newton's second law. The second part is the torque dynamics of the traction motor. These parts are affected by outer conditions such as adhesive coefficient, running resistance and gradient resistance. The each parts are presented by the numerical formula. To test the driving characteristics of the developed model, we performed the simulations by dynamic system simulation software, "SIMULINK" and the results are given for several conditions.
A Study on The Driving Characteristics of Ultrasonic Linear Motor Using Symmetric And Anti-Symmetirc Resonance Modes

Transducer for ultrasonic linear motor with the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes was studied. The ultrasonic linear motor consists of two Langevin type piezoelectric vibrators that cross at right angles with each other in tip. In order to excite symmetric and anti-symmetric resonance modes, the transducer must have a phase shift of 90 degree in space and time. Therefore, the tip of transducer moves on an elliptical motion. In this paper, the finite element analysis was used to optimize dimension and displacement of the transducer. The ultrasonic motor was fabricated using the simulated result and the driving characteristics were measured. No-load velocity was 0.28[m/s] and the maximum efficiency was 30[%] in resonance frequency.
The Fabrication of On-chip Spiral Inductors Through 3-D Field Analysis

In this paper, we verified basic forms and equivalent circuits of spiral inductors and various kinds of parasitics of equivalent circuits by using HFSS and Nexxim program that were 3-D EM analysis tools, and fabrication on-chip spiral inductors using Hynix's 0.25um 1-poly and 5-metal CMOS process. Comparing with PGS(patterned ground shield) and NPGS(non patterned ground shield) of spiral inductors of 3.5 turn, 4.5 turn and 5.5 turn, etc, the application of PGS could improve maximum Q value by 8-12%.
The Effects of an RF Plasma and Electric Fields on the Death of G361 Melanoma Cells

Micro plasma has been recently studied to investigate the effects on various cells. We study a micro-plasma produced by a plasma needle that is operated with RF power and its effects on G361 melanoma cells. The micro plasma size ranges from sub-mm to several mm at a few watts of RF power. For the bio-medical treatment, low-temperature plasma is obtained and gas temperature is controlled within several tens of degrees
in order not to disturb cell activities. Elementary spectroscopic studies to obtain plasma characteristics are presented for Ar and He plasma with different frequencies of RF power. Also the preliminary results of the micro plasma effects on G361 melanoma cells are presented. It was observed that the irradiation of micro plasma induces cell death through the deprivation of tyrosine phosphorylation in the G361 cells.
Extension of Electrode Lifetime for Plasma Torch by Axial Magnetic Field

Axial magnetic field was applied into the hollow anode of plasma torch for the purpose of extension of electrode lifetime. The average arc voltage increased because the arc column became longer, the arc voltage ripple frequency became low. The steady state of arc voltage was removed by applied magnetic filed. The lifetime of electrode was 60 times longer than operation without magnetic field.

This paper presents the design and analysis of LNA-Mixer for 2.45GHz RFID reader. The LNA is implemented by PCSNIM method for low power consumption. The Mixer is implemented by using the Gilbert-type configuration, current bleeding technique and the resonating technique for the tail capacitance. Wavelength-Switchable Fiber Ring Laser Employing a Long-Period Fiber Grating Inscribed on a High Birefringent Fiber

In this paper we propose a wavelength-switchable fiber ring laser that employs a polarization-dependent fiber band stop filter. The fiber filter was fabricated by inscribing a long-period fiber grating on a high birefringent fiber. Dual-wavelength switching operation was accomplished by controlling the rotatable linear polarizer which rotated the polarization plane of the light circulating through the fiber laser cavity. The amplitude variation of both laser lines was measured to be less than 0.5 dB and the signal-to-amplified spontaneous emission ratio was more than 55 dB.
Development of 3-Dimensional Polyimide-based Neural Probe with Improved Mechanical Stiffness and Double-side Recording Sites

A flexible but implantable polyimide-based neural implant was fabricated for reliable and stable long-term monitoring of neural activities from brain. The developed neural implant provides 3-dimensional (3D)
structure, avoids any hand handling, and makes the insertion more efficient and reliable. Any film curvature caused by residual stress was not observed in the electrode. The 3D flexible polyimide electrode penetrated a dense gel whose stiffness is close to live brain tissue, because a
thick nickel was electroplated along the edge of the shank in order to improve the stiffness. The recording sites were positioned at both side of the shank to increase the probability of recording neural signals from a target volume of tissue. Impedance remained stable over 72 hours because of extremely low moisture uptake in the polyimide dielectric layers. At electrical recording test in vitro, the fabricated electrode showed excellent recording performance, suggesting that this electrode has the potential for great recording from neuron firing and long-term implant performance.
High-Speed Characteristics of Plasma Display Panel using Priming Overlapping with Display Drive Method

A new high-speed drive method for the plasma display panel is proposed. In this method, the address period is inserted for the rest period of the sustain pulses and the priming pulse is applied on the entire panel at the same time overlapping with the sustain period. The ramp shaped priming pulse can be made with a simple drive circuit in this technology and the stable sustain discharge can be induced even by a narrow scan pulse in help of the space charge generated from the address discharge. From the experiments, it is ascertained that the priming pulse hardly influences the sustain discharge. Moreover, the voltage margin of the sustain discharge is almost constant though that of the address discharge broadens with narrowing the scan pulse width. And, if the time interval between the scan pulse and the sustain pulse is within
, the voltage margin of the address and the sustain discharges are unaffected though the applied position of the scan pulse is changed. High-speed driving with the address pulse of

Stable PID Tuning for High-order Integrating Processes using Model Reduction Method

PID control is windely used to control stable processes, However, its application to integrating processes is less common. In this paper, we proposed a stable PID controller tuning method for integrating processes with time delay using model reduction method. For proposed model reduction method, it disconnect an integrating factor from integrating processes and reduces separate process using reduction method. and it connect an integrating factor to reduced model. We can obtain stable integrating processes using P controller in inner feedback loop and PID tuning is then used to cancel the pole of the feedback loop. This guarantees both robustness and performance. Simulation examples are given to show the good performance of the proposed tuning method comparing with other methods.
The Effective ROM Design for Area and Power Dissipation Reduction

In a memory, most power is dissipated in line of high capacitance such as decoder lines, word lines, and bit * lines. The decoder size as well as the parastic capacitances of the bit-line are going to reduce, if ROM core size reduces. This paper proposes to reduce a mathod of power dissipation for reducing ROM core size. Design result of ROM used in FFT, proposed method lead to up to 40.6%, 42.12%, 37.82% reduction in area, power consumption and number of Tr. respectively compared with previous method.

A Watermarking Scheme of Lowest Frequency Band Based on the Quad-Tree Algorithm

In this paper, digital watermarking method using quad-tree algorithm and the lowest frequency band is proposed. The proposed algorithm searches the coefficient of the watermark by using quad-tree algorithm and inserts the watermark by the Cox's algorithm. The simulation of the proposed algorithm is implemented about the effect of various weight factors in Cox's algorithm, that of embedding watermark in each subband coefficient (HH, LH, HL), and that of embedding in the lowest frequency band (LL). As a simulation result, the bigger weight factors in Cox's algorithm show strong to noise. The watermarking performance of simultaneously embedding in HH, LH, and HL band is better than that of different cases. In addition, insertion the watermark to the LL band about
of all watermarks improves the watermarking performance in comparison with the case of not using the LL band.
Design of Novel Iterative LMS-based Decision Feedback Equalizer

In the proposed equalizer, the longer concatenated training sequence can provide the more sufficient channel information and the reused original training sequence can provide the correct decision feedback information. In addition, the overall adaptive processing is performed using the low complexity LMS algorithm. The study shows the performance of the proposed method is enhanced with the number of iterations and, furthermore, better than that of the conventional LMS-based DFEs with the training sequence of longer or equal length. Computational complexity is increased linearly with the number of iterations.

This paper proposes an enhanced adaptive mode decision scheme for fast H.264 encoders. By efficiently predicting AZCB (All Zero Coefficient Block), the proposed scheme can encode motion pictures in H.264 up to 2.86 and 1.68 times faster than JM9.3 and AMD , respectively. Besides, this scheme significantly reduces the encoding performance fluctuation of AMD across tested bit-rates and video sequences.
A Study on the Estimation of Motor Unit Information using Surface EMG

In this study, we present a novel method for estimating the information of MU(motor unit) which is the basic element of human muscle by using surface EMG. Some of the method developed in this field could only estimate the numbers of MU that is activated. However, in our study the MU-simulator based on the line source model was designed to estimate the MU information including the numbers of MU and muscle fiber, conduction velocity, MU diameter, fiber diameter, and end plate position. The SMUAP(single motor unit action potential) detector was designed and CMAP(compound muscle action potential) by electrical stimulus was recorded. With these data, the MU-simulator can estimate the MU information by varying muscle paramater settings through MSE(mean square error) method. Our results shows that the proposed method can be comparable with the method of anatomical studies. Moreover, our system can be utilized to build a tool for diagnosis and treatment assessment of neuromuscular patients.
Extraction of Tongue Region using Graph and Geometric Information

In Oriental medicine, the status of a tongue is the important indicator to diagnose one's health like physiological and clinicopathological changes of inner parts of the body. The method of tongue diagnosis is not only convenient but also non-invasive and widely used in Oriental medicine. However, tongue diagnosis is affected by examination circumstances a lot like a light source, patient's posture and doctor's condition. To develop an automatic tongue diagnosis system for an objective and standardized diagnosis, segmenting a tongue is inevitable but difficult since the colors of a tongue, lips and skin in a mouth are similar. The proposed method includes preprocessing, graph-based over-segmentation, detecting positions with a local minimum over shading, detecting edge with color difference and estimating edge geometry from the probable structure of a tongue, where preprocessing performs down-sampling to reduce computation time, histogram equalization and edge enhancement. A tongue was segmented from a face image with a tongue from a digital tongue diagnosis system by the proposed method. According to three oriental medical doctors' evaluation, it produced the segmented region to include effective information and exclude a non-tongue region. It can be used to make an objective and standardized diagnosis.
