A Study on IEC61850-9-2 Distributed Sampled Measured Values Applications for Merging Unit at Process Level

Recently, IEC61850 supports the standardized communication technique in both station bus and process bus, and presents the substation automation model. In this paper, we propose the required techniques to develop the Merging Unit (MU), which is one of the important data acquisition equipment in substation automation, under IEC61850 communication protocol. Especially, we also propose the precision time synchronization technique using GPS(Global Positioning System) for the MU. IEC61850-9-2 SV (Sampled Value) service is applied to the MU which is designed using microprocessor. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed MU, the playback program, which can reconstruct the transmitted sampled value data on the basis of time information, is developed and the performance of the IEC61850 SV service for MU is verified experimentally.
A Study for the Improvement of the Fault Decision Capability of FRTU using Discrete Wavelet Transform and Neural Network

This paper proposes the improved fault decision algorithm using DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) and ANNs for the FRTU(Feeder Remote Terminal Unit) on the feeder in the power distribution system. Generally, the FRTU has the fault decision scheme detecting the phase fault, the ground fault. Especially FRTU has the function for 2000ms. This function doesn't operate FI(Fault Indicator) for the Inrush current generated in switching time. But it has a defect making it impossible for the FI to be operated from the real fault current in inrush restraint time. In such a case, we can not find the fault zone from FI information. Accordingly, the improved fault recognition algorithm is needed to solve this problem. The DWT analysis gives the frequency and time-scale information. The neural network system as a fault recognition was trained to distinguish the inrush current from the fault status by a gradient descent method. In this paper, fault recognition algorithm is improved by using voltage monitoring system, DWT and neural network. All of the data were measured in actual 22.9kV power distribution system.
Development of Fault Detection and Noise Cancellation Algorithm Using Wavelet Transform on Underground Power Cable Systems

In this paper, the fault detection and noise cancellation algorithm based on wavelet transform was developed to locate the fault more accurately. Specially, noise cancellation algorithm was based on the correlation of wavelet coefficients at multi-scales. Fault detection, classification and location algorithm were tested by EMTP simulation on real power cable system. From these results, the faults can be detected and located even in very difficult situations, such as at different inception angle and fault resistance.
Suppression of Strategic Capacity Withholding by Capacity Payment in a Competitive Generation Market

In a cost based pool market, the generation capacity can be used as strategic bids by generation companies (Gencos) with the cost functions open to the market. Competition using strategic capacities is modeled by Cournot and Perfect Competiton (PC) model, and transformed into two by two payoff matrix game with Gencos' decision variables of Cournot and PC model. The payoff matrices vary when capacity payments are given to Gencos in accordance with their capacity bids. Nash Equilibrium (NE) in the matrices also moves with capacity price changes. In order to maximize social welfare of the market, NE should locate in a certain position of the payoff matrices, which corresponds to a PC NE. A concept of a critical capacity price is proposed and calculated in this paper that is defined as a minimum capacity price leading to PC NE. The critical capacity price is verified to work as a tool for suppressing a strategic capacity withholding in simulations of a test system.
Profit Evaluation Model for a Generator Investment in the Wholesale Electricity Market

Several mechanisms are introduced for the procurement of capacity adequacy. In the competitive electricity market, however, it is a GENCO that makes generation investment decision. A GENCO will invest a new generator when it can get more profit than cost. There requires a model to evaluate profit with respect to a new generation investment. In the view of long-term investment, evaluation of a profit of a generator in the electricity market is quite different from that of short-term operation. In this paper, a new profit-evaluation model is proposed for the long-term generation investment. It can treat the probabilistic characteristics of generators, ie, forced-outage-rates, which affect profit of generators.
A Study on Real Test of an Incremental Conductance MPPT Control Based Photovoltaic Inverter

In this paper, a 10kVA PV inverter applying Incremental Conductance(IncCond) method for maximum power point tracking WIS developed and its performance tests were carried out. Modeling and simulation of PV array and system controller was performed using PSCAD/EMTDC, an electromagnetic transient analysis program. After comparison and analysis of Perturbation & Observation (P & O) and IncCond method, a PV inverter based on IncCond method was designed and manufactured. Grid interface transient characteristics including start-up, normal operation, and fault operation were tested, which verified the usefulness of the proposed system. In the near future, commercialization process will proceed through additional extensive tests of transients.
A Study on Characteristics of Angular Rate Sensor using Real Vehicle

A surface micro machined angular rate sensor utilizing a vibrating MEMS structure on a silicon has been developed. These tuning fork angular rate sensors are extremely rugged, inherently balanced, and easy to fabricate. The device is fabricated using a temperature compensation method based on automatic gain control technique. A linearity of approximately 0.6%, limited by the on-chip electronics has been obtained with this new sensor. Tests of the sensor demonstrate that its performance is equivalent to that required for implementation of a yaw control system. Vehicle handling and safety are substantially improved using the sensor to implement yaw control.
Performance improvement of Classification of Steam Generator Tube Defects in Nuclear Power Plant Using Neural Network

In this paper, we study the classification of defects at steam generator tube in nuclear power plant using eddy current testing (ECT). We consider 4 defect patterns of SG tube: I-In type, I-Out type, V-In type, and V-Out type. Through numerical analysis program based on finite element modeling, 400 ECT signals are generated by varying width and depth of each defect type. In order to improve the classification performance, we propose new feature extraction technique. After extracting new features from the generated ECT signals, multi-layer perceptron is used to classify the defect patterns. Through the computer simulation study, it is shown that the proposed method achieves 100% classification success rate while the previous method yields 91% success rate.
Dynamic Characteristics Analysis of Linear BLOC motor using Finite Element Method Coupling with External Circuit Model

This paper presents the dynamic characteristics of a linear brushless dc (BLDC) motor with permanent magnet excitation for the precision conveyor according to the load condition. Dynamic performance of the linear BLDC motor driven with 6 step inverter such as thrust force and speed is simulated by finite element method coupling with external circuit and measured for the prototype motor. The results of finite element analysis are compared to the experimental results and verify reliability.
Study on the Stability Evaluation of the High-Tc Superconducting Power Cable

In order to evaluate if the high-Tc superconducting(HTS) power cable is operating stably, the characteristics of the HTS power cable should be found out. The properties of HTS tapes by measuring the voltage with respect to the current can be archived. But, the HTS power cable is different from the case of HTS tapes. This method is invalid because of the electromagnetic fields caused by other HTS tapes. In this paper, the stability evaluation of the HTS cable was performed by the following procedure. First, the voltage-current characteristics of HTS tape were measured and the electromagnetic field distributions of the HTS power cable with the external magnetic field were analyzed. Second, the losses of the HTS power cable were calculated using the result of the measurement and the analysis. Finally, the stable operation of the HTS power cable was evaluated on the basis of the losses of the superconducting cable.
Vector Control of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor without Speed Sensor

Lately, many approaches of speed sensorless control method for Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) ha, been developed. This paper proposes a novel sensorless algorithm for speed estimation of IPMSM. First of all, proposes sensorless method estimates flux of rotor using foundational voltage equation of IPMSM and then estimates position and speed of rotor using Phase Locked Loop(PLL). Proposed sensorless algorithm demonstrated through simulation using Matlab simulink and experiment.
Operational Mode Analysis of the AT Flyback Multi-Resonant Converter

The multi-resonant(MR) converter has a characteristics that the parasitic components existing in the converter are absorbed into the resonant circuits. The designed MR converter could be got a high efficiency and a high power density because the switching power losses are reduced effectively due to resonant switching circuit. However, the high resonant voltage stress of switching power devices leads to the conduction loss. In this paper, it is proposed the novel alternated(AT) flyback multi-resonant converter to overcome such a drawback. The suggested converter dc input is divided by two series input filter capacitors. The resonant stress voltage is reduced to 2-3 times the input voltage without any complexity and it provides the various circuit schemes in lots of applications. The proposed flyback MR converter is verified through simulation and experiment.

The Thermal and Circuits Design of an LED Bulb Considering Temperature Property

Although LEDs have been used in various applications with improving the brightness and luminous efficacy, the electrical and optical characteristics of high power LED varies at different temperature and starting time. In this paper, optimal heat sink and apparatus design were conducted using IR camera and ICEPAK on the LED bulb consisting with fourteen LED array. The temperatures of heat sink and LED device of the designed LED bulb without cooling pan were
, respectively, showing in good themal characteristics. For high efficiency driving circuit of LED array adopted optimal heat sink design, driving circuits of constant voltage and current circuits were suggested and fabricated. As a result the efficacy of all driving circuits showed more than 20 lm/W. Also, the constant current circuits are suitable for signal lamp, hallway lamp, and flash lamp having short operating time(about 30 min). On the other hand, a reading light and indoor lamp having long operating time can be controlled by constant voltage circuit.

A recently developed methods for the on-site calibration of the voltage transformer (VT) comparator system have been reviewed in the paper. The method utilizes the several traveling standards consisting of the VT, the non-reactive standard resistors, the wide ratio error VT, and the decade resistors. The VT is used for the absolute evaluation of a standard VT belonging to the industry. The non-reactive standard resistor and wide ratio error VT are used for the linearity check of errors in the voltage comparator of the industry. The decade resistors are used for evaluation of a VT burden of the industry.
Two-Dimensional Simulation of Hg Flat Fluorescent Lamps for an LCD Backlight unit

The discharge phenomena in a flat fluorescent lamp for the backlight unit of liquid crystal displays are simulated by sung a two-dimensional fluid model. The numerical methods for the calculation of plasma dynamics and the radiation transport are introduced for the discharge simulation and for the transmission of the vacuum ultraviolet lights. The simulation results are presented to compare the luminance and the luminance efficacy with the variation of gas pressure, gas mixture ratio, driving voltage, and frequency.
Breakdown and Destruction Characteristics of the CMOS IC by High Power Microwave

We investigated the damage of the CMOS IC which manufactured three different technologies by high power microwave. The tests separated the two methods in accordance with the types of the CMOS IC located inner waveguide. The only CMOS IC which was located inner waveguide was occurred breakdown below the max electric field (23.94kV/m) without destruction but the CMOS IC which was connected IC to line organically was located inner waveguide and it was occurred breakdown and destruction below the max electric field. Also destructed CMOS IC was removed their surface and a chip condition was analyzed by SEM. The SEM analysis of the damaged devices showed onchuipwire and bondwire destruction like melting due to thermal effect. The tested results are applied to the fundamental data which interprets the combination mechanism of the semiconductors from artificial electromagnetic wave environment and are applied to the data which understand electromagnetic wave effects of electronic equipments.
Implementation of LTCC Triplexer Band Based on Conjugate Matching Method

In this paper, a compact triplexer has been implemented for Cellular/GPS/USPCS applications. In order to realize the proposed triplexer, we use a low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrate to enable a fully compact integrated module using a multi-layer high-density architecture, and conjugate-match the channels instead of the open matching technique. The three dimensional design capability of LTCC substrates can reduce the overall size of the triplexer, resulting in dimensions on the order of
. The measured result shows that the triplexer has, in Cellular/GPS/USPCS bands, the insertion loss of less than 0.5dB, less than 1.7dB, and less than 0.9dB in order. Also, the triplexer has an isolation of more than 15dB in the cellular and USPCS bands and an isolation of more than 20dB in the GPS band.

An LMI Approach to Output Feedback Sliding Mode Controller Design

The problem of designing dynamic output feedback sliding mode controllers for uncertain multivariable linear systems is considered. Using linear matrix inequalities(LMIs), a feasibility condition for the design problem is derived. Explicit fomulas of the gain matrices of a full order output feedback sliding mode controller in terms of the solution matrices of the LMI condition is given. A simple LMI-based algorithm for designing output feedback sliding mode controllers is also given. Finally, numerical design examples are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Development of a Real-Time Collision Avoidance Algorithm for eXperimental Autonomous Vehicle

In this paper, a real-time collision avoidance algorithm is proposed for experimental Autonomous Vehicle(XAV). To ensure real-time implementation, a virtual potential field is calculated in one dimensional space. The attractive force is generated by the steering command either transmitted in the remote control station or calculated in the Autonomous Navigation System(ANS) of the XAV. The repulsive force is generated by obstacle information obtained from Laser Range Finder(LRF) mounted on the XAV. Using these attractive and repulsive forces, modified steering, velocity and emergency stop commands are created to avoid obstacles and follow a planned path. The suggested algorithm is inserted as one component in the XAV system. Through various real experiments and technical demonstration using the XAV, the usefulness and practicality of the proposed algorithm are verified.
Hybrid Method of Max-Min Ant System and Rank-based Ant System for Optimal Design of Location Management in Wireless Network

The assignment of cells to reporting or non-reporting cells is an NP-hard problem having an exponential complexity in the Reporting Cell Location Management (RCLM) system. Frequent location update may result in degradation of quality of service due to interference. Miss on the location of a mobile terminal will necessitate a search operation on the network when a call comes in. The number of reporting cells and which cell must be reporting cell should be determined to balance the registration (location update) and search (paging) operations to minimize the cost of RCLM system. T1is paper compares Max-Min ant system (MMAS), rank-based ant system (RAS) and hybrid method of MMAS and RAS that generally used to solve combinatorial optimization problems. Experimental results demonstrate that hybrid method of MMAS and RAS is an effective and competitive approach in fairly satisfactory results with respect to solution quality and execution time for the optimal design of location management system.
Fuzzy Combined Polynomial Neural Networks

In this paper, we introduce a new fuzzy model called fuzzy combined polynomial neural networks, which are based on the representative fuzzy model named polynomial fuzzy model. In the design procedure of the proposed fuzzy model, the coefficients on consequent parts are estimated by using not general least square estimation algorithm that is a sort of global learning algorithm but weighted least square estimation algorithm, a sort of local learning algorithm. We are able to adopt various type of structures as the consequent part of fuzzy model when using a local learning algorithm. Among various structures, we select Polynomial Neural Networks which have nonlinear characteristic and the final result of which is a complex mathematical polynomial. The approximation ability of the proposed model can be improved using Polynomial Neural Networks as the consequent part.
Edge Map-Based Fingerprint Reference-Point Detection

A new reference point location method based on an edge map is proposed, where an orientation map is defined and used to find the edge map. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively detect the core point in poor quality and arch-type fingerprint images and produces better results in terms of the detection rate and accuracy than the sine map-based method.
The Analysis of Living Daily Activities by Interpreting Bi-Directional Accelerometer Signals with Extreme Learning Machine

In this paper, we propose pattern recognition algorithm for activities of daily living by adopting extreme learning machine based on single layer feedforward networks(SLFNs) to the signal from bidirectional accelerometer. For activity classification, 20 persons are participated and we acquire 6, types of signals at standing, walking, running, sitting, lying, and falling. Then, we design input vector using reduced model for ELM input. In ELM classification results, we can find accuracy change by increasing the number of hidden neurons. As a result, we find the accuracy is increased by increasing the number of hidden neuron. ELM is able to classify more than 80 % accuracy for experimental data set when the number of hidden is more than 20.
A Method for Estimation and Elimination of EGG Artifacts from Scalp EEG Using the Least Squares Acceleration Based Adaptive Digital Filter

A new method for detecting and eliminating the Electrocardiogram(ECG) artifact from the scalp Electroencephalogram(EEG) is proposed. Based on the single channel EEG, the proposed method consists of 4 procedures: emphasizing the R-wave of ECG artifact from EEG using the least squares acceleration(LSA) filter, detecting the R-wave from the LSA filtered EEG using the phase space method and R-R interval, generating the delayed impulse synchronized to the R-wave and elimination of the ECG artifacts based on the adaptive digital filter using the impulse and raw EEG. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated in the two separating parts of R-wave detection and, ECG estimation and elimination from EEG. In the R-wave detection, the proposed method showed the mean error rate of 6.285(%). In the ECG estimation and elimination using simulated and/or real EEG recordings, we found that the ECG artifacts were successfully estimated and eliminated in comparison with the conventional multi-channel techniques, in which independent component analysis and ensemble average method are used. From this we can conclude that the proposed method is useful for the detecting and eliminating the ECG artifact from single channel EEG and simple for ambulatory/portable EEG monitoring system.
Optimum Electrode Selection for Measuring Abdominal Pressure using Bio-Impedance Method

In this study, we determined the optimum electrode pair for measuring the abdominal pressure using bio-impedance method and compared with conventional methods. Because impedance changes differ from a weight, a height, contractile force, volume of muscle and blood other or whatever of individuals, it was quantified using values of impedance change, correlation coefficient and SNR. Our results showed the optimum electrode pair (1, 9) which could detect impedance changes due to an increase of the intensity of the abdominal pressure. The correlation coefficient and quadratic function between the RMS values of EMG and the impedance changes were 0.87 and
, respectively. It demonstrated that the abdominal pressure could be measured noninvasively and simply using bio-impedance method. We propose that this optimum electrode configuration would be useful for future studies involving the convenient measurement of abdominal pressure by ambulatory urodynamics monitoring study.
