Analysis of Global Oscillation via Sync Search in Power Systems

The present study explained the phenomenon that low frequency oscillation is synchronized with discrete data obtained from a wide area system, and a sync search method. When a disturbance occurs in an power system, various controllers operate in order to maintain synchronization. If the system's damping is poor, low frequency oscillations continue for a long time and the oscillations are synchronized with one another at specific frequency. The present study estimated dominant modes, magnitude and phase of signals by applying parameter estimation methods to discrete signals obtained from an power system, and performed sync search among wide area signals by comparing the estimated data. Sync search was performed by selecting those with the same frequency and damping constant from dominant oscillation modes included in a large number of signals, and comparing their magnitude and phase. In addition, we defined sync indexes in order to indicate the degree of sync between areas in a wide area system. Furthermore, we proposed a wide area sync search method by normalizing mode magnitude in discrete data obtained from critical generator of the wide area. By applying the sync search method and sync indexes proposed in this study to two area systems, we demonstrated that sync scanning can be performed for discrete signals obtained from power systems.
The Maximum Installable DG Capacity According to Operation Methods of Voltage Regulator in Distribution Systems

Stable and sustainable power supply means maintaining a certain level of power quality and service while securing energy resource and resolving environmental issues. Distributed generation (DG) has become an essential and indispensable element from environmental and energy security perspectives. It is known that voltage violation is the most important constraint for load variation and the maximum allowable DG. In distribution system, sending voltage from distribution substation is regulated by ULTC (Under Load Tap Changer) designed to maintain a predetermined voltage level. ULTC is controlled by LDC (Line Drop Compensation) method compensating line voltage drop for a varying load, and the sending voltage of ULTC calls for LDC parameters. The consequence is that the feasible LDC parameters considering variation of load and DG output are necessary. In this paper, we design each LDC parameters determining the sending voltage that can satisfy voltage level, decrease ULTC tap movement numbers, or increase DG introduction. Moreover, the maximum installable DG capacity based on each LDC parameters is estimated.
A Comparative Study for Reliability of Single and Radial Power Distribution System considering Momentary Interruption

The structure of a power distribution system will change in a loop configuration such as in the case of a smart grid. If power distribution system changes radial to loop form, the structure may have to be changed significantly. Therefore, we analyzed the reliability indices and calculated a CIC(Customer Interruption Cost) for the loop power distribution system. The power distribution system reliability depends on the protection scheme. This study is applied to the current protection scheme method and is compared with each model. When the CIC was evaluated, most studies performed calculations only for sustained interruptions. However, in actuality, momentary interruption frequencies occurred more than sustain interruptions. Thus, it is occurred the CIC additively. Therefore, we evaluated a CIC including momentary interruption, for each model, and then compared with MAIFI(Momentary Average Interruption Frequency Index)
A Study on the Fault Diagnosis Expert System for 765kV Substations

This paper presents a fault diagnosis expert system for 765kV substation. The proposed system includes the topology processor and intelligent alarm processing subsystems. This expert system estimates the fault section through the inference process using heuristic knowledge and the output of topology processor and intelligent alarm processing system. The rule-base of this expert system is composed of basic rules suggested by Korea Electric Power Corporation and heuristic rules. This expert system is developed using PROLOG language. Also, user friendly Graphic User Interface is developed using visual basic programming in the windows XP environment. The proposed expert system showed a promising performance through the several case studies.
A Study on the Protective Coordination of Distribution Automation System under Loop Operation

As a general radial configuration of power distribution system, the various researches have being studied to change a radial configuration to network one such as smart, intelligent and micro grid for loop operation. If a radial configuration changes to network, protective coordination comes to the biggest problem. When a typical protective algorithm is applied to loop distribution system protection, the interrupted section is expanded, therefore, reliability grows worse. This paper presents the new protective method being able to apply to loop distribution system with Distribution Automation System (DAS) which separate the minimal faulted section. Through contingency analysis of the sustained and momentary fault, we analyzed the influence for radial configuration and loop configuration using interrupted area and proved the effectiveness of proposed method.
An Application of Harmony Search Algorithm for Operational Cost Minimization of MicroGrid System

This paper presents an application of Harmony Search (HM) meta-heuristic optimization algorithm for optimal operation of microgrid system. The microgrid system considered in this paper consists of a wind turbine, a diesel generator, and a fuel cell. An one day load profile which divided 20 minute data and wind resource for wind turbine generator were used for the study. In optimization, the HS algorithm is used for solving the problem of microgrid system operation which a various generation resources are available to meet the customer load demand with minimum operating cost. The application of HS algorithm to optimal operation of microgrid proves its effectiveness to determine optimally the generating resources without any differences of load mismatch and having its nature of fast convergency time as compared to other optimization method.
A Numerical Algorithm for Fault Location Estimation and Arc Faults Detection for Auto-Reclosure

This paper presents a new numerical algorithm for fault discrimination and fault location estimation when occur to arcing ground and arcing line to line on transmission lines. The object of this paper is developed from new numerical algorithm to calculate the fault distance and simultaneously to make a distinction between transient and permanent faults. so the first of object for propose algorithm would be distinguish the permanent from the transient faults. This arcing fault discrimination algorithm is used if calculated value of arc voltage amplitude is greater than product of arc voltage gradient and the length of the arc path, which is equal or greater than the flashover length of a suspension insulator string[1-3]. Also, each algorithm is separated from short distance and long distance. This is difference to with/without capacitance between short to long distance. To test the validity of the proposed algorithms, the results of algorithm testing through various computer simulations are given. The test was simulated in EMTP/ATP simulator under a number of scenarios and calculate of algorithm was used to MATLAB.
A Study on Measures to Boost the Development of Distributed Generation through Analysis and assessment of the District Electricity Power Business Environment

The purpose of this study is to build promotive measures and to develop alternative policies of DG(Distributed Generation) by finding and analysing effects of four business environment factors related to DEPB(District Electricity Power Business) on boosting DG. In this study, four business environment factors, which are the electric power industry restructuring, electricity tariff and pricing structure, regulations for DEPB, and conflicts of stake-holding groups, are considered as independent variables. And promotion factors of DG including small CHP(Combined Heat and Power) generation, which is outcome of DEPB, are considered as dependent variables. But dependent variables including booming of new renewable energy generation due to green energy pricing incentives, the electric power industry restructuring, and electricity tariff and pricing policies were separatively considered. In this study, some policies were proposed reflecting research results of empirical demonstrative analysis, previous studies, overseas cases, etc.
Comparison of Characteristics for Variable Operation using Doubly-fed Induction Generator and Fixed Speed Operation in Wind Turbine System

This paper analyzes the steady-state operating characteristics of doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG) and fixed-speed induction generator(FSIG) in wind turbine system. It also presents a modeling and simulation of a grid-connected wind turbine generation system for dynamics analysis on MATLAB/Simulink, and compares the responses between DFIG and FSIG wind turbine systems with respect to wind speed variation, 3-phase fault and 1-phase ground fault of the network. Simulation results show the variations of generator's active/reactive output, rotor speed, terminal voltage, fault current, etc. Case studies demonstrate that DFIG illustrates better performance compared to FSIG.
Design of Electromagnetic Actuator with Three-Link Mechanism for Air Circuit Breaker

In this paper, an electromagnetic force driving actuator (EMFA) and three-link mechanism are proposed as a driving mechanism and connection device for low voltage air circuit breaker (ACB). As the result of dynamic characteristic analysis, the actuator and link mechanism are designed from the simulation and manufactured. The magneitc field of the EMFA is analyzed using the finite element method (FEM). The dynamic characteristic analysis with calculation of the circuit equation and kinetical equation is performed by the time difference method (TDM). Also, the result of the analysis is verified through the experiment of the fabrication model. In this paper, the EMFA size is smaller than the actuator for high voltage circuit breaker. Thus, the dynamic characteristic is analyzed with end-winding inductance that is calculated by the same method which is applied on the circle type end-winding of motors. The designed model for 1600 ampere-frame ACB and the three-link mechanism for connecting contact part with actuating part are manufactured. It is confirmed that the three-link mechanism is possible for improving the circuit breaker efficiency and reducing the size of the EMFA. It is proved that the improved 2-D analysis is more accurate than established method.
Analysis of Flow Characteristics and Experiment of Conductive Liquid Metal Coupling Lorentz Force with Fluid Equation

This paper presents the flow characteristics in the fluid circulation loop using the tubular type linear induction motor(TLIM) electromagnetic pump. A TLIM pump was designed using the equivalent and genetic algorithm for the flow system of 40[1/min]. The flow characteristics are analyzed by coupling the Maxwell equations with the Navier-Stokes equation. The analysis algorithm also takes account of the effects of the thrust. The flow characteristics are analysed with the proposed method and compared with the commercial program and experiment and discussed.
A Study on Reduction Method of Electromagnetic Noise of PCB for Vehicle Cluster

In this paper, an EMI reduction effects using an EMC chamber is described and reduction methods is proposed. In the case of general electronic components a working frequency is low. But in this paper the vehicle cluster works 75MHz in the main clock frequency, becoming weak by noise because of being attached in TFT LCD. As the outer case installed in the vehicle is made up of plastic materials, the noise is radiated if not protecting noise in the PCB itself. Therefore, This paper will explain the theoretical basis and propriety with respect to the discussion and need about the guide for PCB design considering EMC, through the reduction of PCB noise.
Current Control Method of Distribution Static Compensator Considering Non-Linear Loads

DSTATCOM(distribution static compensator) is one of the custom power devices, and protects a distribution line from unbalanced and harmonic current caused by non-linear and unbalanced loads. Researches about DSTATCOM are mainly divided two parts, one is the calculation of compensated current and the other part is the current control. This paper proposes a proportional-resonant-repetitive current controller. Improved performance of instantaneous power compensation has been shown by simulations and experiments.
A Study on PFC AC-DC Converter of High Efficiency added in Electric Isolation

This paper is studied on a novel power factor correction (PFC) AC-DC converter of high efficiency by soft switching technique. The input current waveform in the proposed converter is got to be a sinusoidal form composed of many a discontinuous pulse in proportion to the magnitude of a ac input voltage under the constant switching frequency. Therefore, the input power factor is nearly unity and the control method is simple. The proposed converter adding an electric isolation operates with a discontinuous current mode (DCM) of the reactor in order to obtain some merits of simpler control, such as fixed switching frequency, without synchronization control circuit used in continuous current mode (CCM). To achieve the soft switching (ZCS or ZVS) of control devices, the converter is constructed with a new loss-less snubber for a partial resonant circuit. It is that the switching losses are very low and the efficiency of the converter is high, Particularly, the stored energy in a loss-less snubber capacitor recovers into input side and increases input current from a resonant operation. The result is that the input power factor of the proposed converter is higher than that of a conventional PFC converter. This paper deals mainly with the circuit operations, theoretical, simulated and experimental results of the proposed PFC AC-DC converter in comparison with a conventional PFC AC-DC converter.
Implementation of IEC 61400-25 based communication system for wind power plants

IEC 61400-25(Communications for monitoring and control of wind power plants) is established as a international standard by IEC TC 88 in 2007 with the growth of the wind power industry. In this paper, MMS service which is defined in lEC 61400-25 part 4 is implemented, and the wind power generator is objectified by using the VMD of MMS service. We also implemented MMS communication system between the wind power generator and the local control center using the proposed VMD. The performance of the developed MMS communication system is verified through the XML based user interface on the web browser.
The Characteristics and Technical Trends of Power MOSFET

This paper reviews the characteristics and technical trends in Power MOSFET technology that are leading to improvements in power loss for power electronic system. The silicon bipolar power transistor has been displaced by silicon power MOSFET's in low and high voltage system. The power electronic technology requires the marriage of power device technology with MOS-gated device and bipolar analog circuits. The technology challenges involved in combining power handling capability with finger gate, trench array, super junction structure, and SiC transistor are described, together with examples of solutions for telecommunications, motor control, and switch mode power supplies.
Characteristics of Insulation Aging in Large Generator Stator Windings

Insulation tests have been performed on two generator stator bars under accelerated aging under a laboratory environment. Electrical stress was applied to stator bar No.1, and electrical and thermal stresses were applied to stator bar No.2. Nondestructive stator insulation tests including the ac current, dissipation factor(
), and partial discharge tests have been performed on both bars as the bars were aged for 11460 hours. Experimental test results show that
, and partial discharge of No. 1 and No.2 stator bars increased with increased in aging time. It has been concluded from the test that the stator insulation of the two generators are in good condition.

This paper was studied about the aging judgment method by ultraviolet rays image to happen in electric power equipment using ultraviolet rays camera. We established the aging judgment method as follows; 20% within of risk factor of insulation state of electrical facility that ultraviolet rays image does not show is "good or recognition". 30

60% within of risk factor is "inspection" and 60% above of risk factor is "replacement". This method will be utilized for the inspection about electrical facilities.
Frquency Characteristics of Electronic Mixing Optical Detection using APD for Radio over Fiber Network

An analysis is presented for super-high-speed optical demodulation by an avalanche photodiode(APD) with electric mixing. A normalized gain is defined to evaluate the performance of the optical mixing detection. Unlike previous work, we include the effect of the nonlinear variation of the APD capacitance with bias voltage as well as the effect of parasitic and amplifier input capacitance. As a results, the normalized gain is dependent on the signal frequency and the frequency difference between the signal and the local oscillator frequency. However, the current through the equivalent resistance of the APD is almost independent of signal frequency. The mixing output is mainly attributed to the nonlinearity of the multiplication factor. We show also that there is an optimal local oscillator voltage at which the normalized gain is maximized for a given avalanche photodiode.
Construction of High-Speed Wavelength Swept Mode-Locked Laser Based on Oscillation Characteristics of Fiber Fabry-Perot Tunable Filter

A high-speed wavelength swept laser, which is based on oscillation characteristics of a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter, is described. The laser is constructed by using a semiconductor optical amplifier, a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter, and 3.348 km fiber ring cavity. The wavelength sweeps are repeatatively generated with the repetition period of 61 kHz which is the first parallel oscillation frequency of the Fabry-Perot tunable filter for the low power consumption. Mode-locking is implemented by 3.348 km fiber ring cavity for matching the fundamental of cavity roundtrip time to the sweep period. The wavelength tuning range of the laser is 87 nm(FWHM) and the average output power is 1.284 mW.
A Vehicle Speed Detector Using AMR Sensors

This paper proposes a vehicle speed detector with anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) sensors and addresses experimental results to show the performance of the detector. The detector consists of two AMR sensors and mechanical and electronic apparatuses. The AMR sensor senses disturbance of the earth magnetic field caused by a vehicle moving over the sensor and then produces an output indicative of the moving vehicle. In this paper, vehicle speeds are calculated by using two AMR sensors built on a board. The speed of a vehicle is calculated by dividing the known distance between the two sensors with the time difference between two output signals from each sensor, captured sequentially while the vehicle is driving over the sensors. Some field tests have been carried to show the performance of the proposed detector and its usefulness.
A Disturbance Observer-Based Output Feedback Controller for a DC/DC Boost Converter with Load Variation

Output voltage of a DC/DC power converter system is likely to be distorted if variable loads exist in the output terminal. This paper presents a new disturbance observer(DOB) approach to maintain a robust regulation of the output voltage of a boost type DC/DC converter. Unlike the buck-type converter case, the regulation problem of the boost converter is very complicated by the fact that, with respect to the output voltage to be regulated, the system is non-minimum phase. Owing to the non-minimum phase property the classical DOB approach has not been applied to the boost converter. Motivated by a recent result on the application of DOB to non-mimimum phase system, an output feedback control law is proposed by using a parallel feedforward compensator. Simulation results using the Simulink SimPowerSystems prove the performance of the proposed controller against load variation.
Control of Linear Discrete-time Systems using Q-learning and LMI Based on I/O Data

In this paper, we consider the design of
control of linear discrete-time systems having no mathematical model. The basic approach is to use Q-learning which is a reinforcement learning method based on actor-critic structure. The model-free control design is to use not the mathematical model of the system but the informations on states and inputs. As a result, the derived iterative algorithm is expressed as linear matrix inequalities(LMI) of measured data from system states and inputs. It is shown that, for a sufficiently rich enough disturbance, this algorithm converges to the standard
control solution obtained using the exact system model. A simple numerical example is given to show the usefulness of our result on practical application.
A Reconfigurable Image Processing SoC Based on LEON 2 Core

This paper describes the design and implementation of a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for image processing applications to use in wearable/mobile products. The target Soc consists of LEON 2 core, AMBA/APB bus-systems and custom-designed controllers. A new FPGA-based prototyping platform is implemented and used for design and verification of the target SoC. To ensure that the implemented SoC satisfies the required performances, an image processing application is performed.
Efficient Implementing of DNA Computing-inspired Pattern Classifier Using GPU

DNA computing-inspired pattern classification based on the hypernetwork model is a novel approach to pattern classification problems. The hypernetwork model has been shown to be a powerful tool for multi-class data analysis. However, the ordinary hypernetwork model has limitations, such as operating sequentially only. In this paper, we propose a efficient implementing method of DNA computing-inspired pattern classifier using GPU. We show simulation results of multi-class pattern classification from hand-written digit data, DNA microarray data and 8 category scene data for performance evaluation. and we also compare of operation time of the proposed DNA computing-inspired pattern classifier on each operating environments such as CPU and GPU. Experiment results show competitive diagnosis results over other conventional machine learning algorithms. We could confirm the proposed DNA computing-inspired pattern classifier, designed on GPU using CUDA platform, which is suitable for multi-class data classification. And its operating speed is fast enough to comply point-of-care diagnostic purpose and real-time scene categorization and hand-written digit data classification.
A Music Recommendation System for a Driver in Vehicle

This paper proposes a music recommendation system for a driver in vehicle. The proposed system provides (selects and plays) a music to a driver in vehicle in real-time manner by inferring his preference based on physical, environmental, and personal information. Pulse data as physical information, age and biorhythm as personal information, and time as environmental information are used to infer a driver's and thus recommend a music. Experimental results showed that the proposed system could provide better satisfaction to a driver on the recommended music compared to the conventional approach.
A Wide-Window Superscalar Microprocessor Profiling Performance Model Using Multiple Branch Prediction

This paper presents a profiling model of a wide-window superscalar microprocessor using multiple branch prediction. The key idea is to apply statistical profiling technique to the superscalar microprocessor with a wide instruction window and a multiple branch predictor. The statistical profiling data are used to obtain a synthetical instruction trace, and the consecutive multiple branch prediction rates are utilized for running trace-driven simulation on the synthesized instruction trace. We describe our design and evaluate it with the SPEC 2000 integer benchmarks. Our performance model can achieve accuracy of 8.5 % on the average.
A CCD Camera Lens Degradation Caused by High Dose-Rate Gamma Irradiation

Assumed that an IPTV camera system is to be used as an ad-hoc sensor for the surveillance and diagnostics of safety-critical equipments installed in the in-containment building of the nuclear power plant, an major problem is the presence of high dose-rate gamma irradiation fields inside the one. In order to uses an IPTV camera in such intense gamma radiation environment of the in-containment building, the radiation-weakened devices including a CCD imaging sensor, FPGA, ASIC and microprocessors are to be properly shielded from high dose-rate gamma radiation using the high-density material, lead or tungsten. But the passive elements such as mirror, lens and window, which are placed in the optical path of the CCD imaging sensor, are exposed to a high dose-rate gamma ray source directly. So, the gamma-ray irradiation characteristics of the passive elements, is needed to test. A CCD camera lens, made of glass material, have been gamma irradiated at the dose rate of 4.2 kGy/h during an hour up to a total dose of 4 kGy. The radiation induced color-center in the glass lens is observed. The degradation performance of the gamma irradiated lens is explained using an color component analysis.
